The Hunter's Allegiance
The Hunter's Allegiance
A number of warriors in the Watch had animals other than Striders to aid them in whatever battles they came across… and that was what brought Oryani to the Hunter’s Allegiance. She’d decided to follow the ‘trend’ and find a companion for herself. She wasn’t going to force anything, of course, but it would be interesting to see what came up. Khal was quite calm with all animals, so she wasn’t worried about her Strider having any problems.
Quietly and casually, she made her way to where the animals lived… and there were a lot. Cats, dogs, and birds of all sizes. There was quite the range to choose from. She contemplated the two major choices: flying or ground animals. Technically, a big dog or cat would be best for the job she wanted, with massive jaws and long thick claws. Perfect for ripping through attackers. However, her gaze kept drifting to the birds. They had talons and beaks, right?
Sighing quietly, she reminded herself that she was supposed to do this naturally, and see where her heart led her. At least, that was what her mother had said. So, the Chatakwe directed herself to the hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, to see what she could find in terms of a new ‘friend’.
Along the way, she ran into an older man who greeted her and introduced himself as Andrel. Apparently, he was the ‘animal guy’ around, and was willing to help her come to a decision. ”Mmm… thanks…” she muttered with a small smile. She couldn’t quite take her eyes off the huge collection of animals. ”Hey… could I have a look at some of the birds? I’m looking for something big and powerful.” She wondered how they could compare to dogs, though.
Andrel nodded and waved a hand, motioning for the archer to follow him. When they stopped, he procured a leather glove from what seemed like nowhere and passed it over, with instructions to passed it on. It was thick and long, reaching her elbow, and slightly restricting her movement… as well as completely blocking her motion sense from that hand. She slipped it on as he pointed at the chosen group of creatures, not noticing them until a few moments after their arrival.
They were of varying sizes and colors, but for sure… they were all big. Large falcons and hawks, plumage ranging from greys to reds, and… was that an owl? It looked big for an owl, with tufts of feathers on its head that looked kind of like ears. She scanned through them quickly, but her eyes locked onto one in particular… a great golden brown one that looked even more majestic and proud than the others.
“Might I see that one?” she asked, adding the sign for ‘beautiful’ to the last word. ”Ahh… good choice. She’s a Golden eagle, as big and powerful as they get. She’s… picky, but kind of sweet in an odd way.” He made an awkward expression, as if saying that the kind of ‘sweet’ he got from the bird was dead mice on his bedroll. Andrel held out a gloved hand to the powerful looking talons, and the eagle stepped onto his forearm from her perch quite willing. Slowly and steadily he shifted the ‘platform’ so the creature was closer to Oryani. Though she was big… the older Drykas carried the bird like she weighed as much as a feather.
“Hold your arm outstretched and flat, to make a good perch. For all birds, you’re going to wear a glove like this so they don’t rip your arm to shreds. Don’t worry about weight… they’re actually quite light. It’s how they can fly, see. And don’t shake your arm around either… it creates an unstable place to stand. If you want her to move to another place, just hold your arm right up to it, like I did for the perch. She’s been trained to step forward when she feels something like that. When you want her to fly… well, we’ll get to that. This is all just basic falconry and such.”
Speech done, he aligned his arm next to the Chatakwe’s and the eagle stepped forward. She was light, at least lighter than she first seemed. She hopped a little on the way over, giant wings outstretching a little to help balance. They were big wings… what if you were hit by one of those? It sounded painful. Oryani held her arm stiff as she stared in wonder at the bird, unable to take her eyes off those intense orbs…
