90th of Winter 513 AV

Thunder Bay was near. The seas were still pock marked with icebergs but as Una burrowed into the sand she could feel the rich hot blood of lava that flooded beneath. Having been raised in waters running rich with its lifeblood she recognized the throb of it beneath her hands. Running her fingers through the rocky sea floor she indulged in the sensation. Rolling onto her back, tentacles twirling slowly through the water as bubbles trickled from her lips, Una lay back luxuriously stretching out her arms. It was the same pose she had found herself in on her last night in Avanthal. The moment when fierce anxiety eased for a moment and though one's muscles still ran taunt the mind caved into the pressure, stillness and peace slipping in.

The travel had been harder than she remembered, the animals more voracious in the Winter than in the Spring when she had first travelled. She was a days swim from the silty beach of Thunder Bay but felt no need to squander her time in the familiar area. The islands ghostly presence towered on the horizon and the volcano extended its arms to Syna.

Body sore, mind weakened from the constant vigilance Una gazed at the sky unthinking, unfeeling, and unaware. Her body moved without her knowledge paddling slowly through the water fingers tingling with exhaustion. She had forgotten how sparse food was in the North and the last reserves of her blubber had faded from her body leaving her a shaking pinprick of a Charoda in the frigid waters. But in this blissful moment of exhaustion, Una didn't care.

Una didn't care until the whale bumped her. She didn't feel anything but numb tingles as it grazed along her fingers. The Orca moved about her, like a dog investigating its prey. While the Svefra and humans always assumed the Charoda were friendly with all sea creatures it was far from the truth. Charoda were the same as humans on land, surrounded by danger and enemies. Just as on land their constant presence in certain areas made the animals less wary, until they could dash through coral homes with hardly a wincing animal in their way. But in the open sea, they were as much prey as seals or dolphins.

Following the cold small eye with her own Una stayed perfectly still. She was too tired to panic and her heart stayed steady despite the instinctual fear that bubbled in her gut. Almost giggling as the smooth surface grazed her Una twitched as it bumped her side with its nose shoving her through the water. Orca were too proud to hunt what was dead, they weren't scavengers. It was investigating.

Moving away to circle her again Una contemplated bolting. Contemplated for the sake of contemplation. Even the fastest Charoda couldn't outswim an Orca and Una, despite all her talent swimming amongst the coral was an unusually slow swimmer in the open ocean.

Extending her arms from her sides and widening her legs Una star fished on the top of the water waiting for the teeth to engulf her. She had learned from her time with the Spiritist, and from the oblivion of Cy earlier that season. Death was as much a part of life as living, to deny it would be to deny Dira. Who dared deny a goddess?

Maybe it was rationalization for her lack of ability, maybe it was simply her addled mind that left her too numb to move but as it was when the Bird soared above her, its feathers extended and casting the brilliant shadow across Unas own extended body Una didn't move or scream for help as the dark shadow below her grew larger until it began a night sky as long and wide as her body. Predators of the Air and Sea, shadows cast in opposition about her fine frail form.

Turrin had been on guard duty most of the season, so at the first opportunity to take a break from his stressful job, Aponivi and him decided to go flying along the snow covered coast of the bay. The endal scouted the shoreline and saw the ice was quite solid, but he looked off into the open ocean and saw sparkling surface of open water. Patting his friends feathered neck, Turrin mentally contacted the wind eagle, “Why don't you head towards the open water? Maybe we can spot a seal basking on the ice.” Aponivi quickly responded, “I take it. You guard duty has made you itch for hunting doesn't it?” In their eyes of the chiet and the dek, Turrin was the enemy since he was a endal, and being a foriegner just complicated his whole situation. The warrior knew the patrols were apart of his duty, but the look of disdain from the lower castes was starting to were on the mind of the endal, so this hunting trip with Aponivi was welcomed by Turrin to unwind from the stress of the season. He responded to the wind eagle, “Honestly, I would rather face down a herd of Zith than patrol the inner warrens of Wind Reach.” Aponivi asked sadly, “Is it bad?” Quickly responding, Turrin responded to the wind eagle, “Yes.”

When Aponivi turned towards the open water, Turrin held onto Aponivi's saddle with hands and used his legs to hold onto the side wind eagle. Leaning towards the the turn, Turrin bent down in his saddle as he the giant eagle banked right towards the open water. The endal mentally told him the fly closer to water, so he could get a better look activity on the seasonal ice shelf. When the wind eagle got to his desired altitude over the ice, Turrin noticed that there was much animal activity on the ice. The endal noticed the middle of the ice shelf didn't have much activity with animal traffic. Maybe a few birds, but it seemed to void of any animal activity worth the aerial hunters time and energy. As Turrin flew towards the edge, the endal could see spots of black laying on the edge of the ice. The endal knew if he landed the wind eagle close to the animals. He would scare the animals away landing the lard bird of prey next to them, so he decided to keep the animal's location in mind as Aponivi and him flew over the open water.

As Turrin flew over the water, he started to become mesmerized at the glittering reflection of the ocean surface, The endal didn't know much about the beasts that reside under the surface of the sea, so he stayed a comfortable distance above the surface of the water. Suddenly, Turrin's golden eyes caught two large silhouettes circling something in the water. The Endal mental said jokily to Aponivi, “Do you want to go one on one with a whale my friend?” The wind eagle screeched out loud and said sourly in Turrin's head, “Is your head full of feathers, Myrian? No, I am not mentally prepared to tackle a whale even a small one at the moment!” Turrin figured the long explanation was a no, so he responded mentally, “You are no fun!” The wind eagle flew closer to the water, and he saw a humanoid shape swimming in the water. The endal racked his mind trying to think about what person or race would be stupid enough to swim in a frigid ocean with blood thirsty beast hunting it's watery depth. Turrin said out loud to Aponivi, “I want you to circle close to the water, so I can see if I can communicate with it.” As Aponivi circled about fifty feet above the water, Turrin yelled down to the humanoid in the common tongue, “Are you alright? Do need assistance?” The endal wasn't even sure if the humanoid creature was sentient, so he didn't get a response. Dira and Caiyha would decide it's fate rather quickly, so he waited for a for a response as he eyed the large silhouettes circling the humanoid.

Predators of the Air and Sea

“Are you alright? Do need assistance?” An earthly voice called to her. Una recognized the typical chirp of the Inartan accent but as the water lapped noisily about her ears she couldn't fathom what the man had yelled down to her. The cold bright sun behind them cast them into darkness, creating a silhouette Una recognized from her childhood. Though it was hazy, altered over the years and by her childhood fantasy Una knew the creature for a Wind Eagle. Reaching her arms out toward the eagle, fond memories of the caressing beak from her past made her ache for its comfort.

"Bird." She murmured into the sky in char, her voice a bubbling oval. Her mouth opened into a scream as the Orca bumped her side harder, blowing an upward waterfall over a mater high. The sight of the bird had awakened the Charoda, with the newfound control of her legs and energy to act out her panic Una straightened in the water.

Satisfied she was alive, the Orca moved toward her. Playfully it took her foot in its mouth making Una shriek louder. Body numb she didn't feel the pain, but the feeling of the creature pulling her beneath the waves was unusual and uncanny. Her mouth bubbled at the top before disappearing under the surface. Both too tired to fight back, and too instinctual not to Una gazed down at the black nose that pulled her meters below Synas embrace willing the creature to release her.

As if thrilled with the idea of a toy the Orca released her slowly only to latch onto the tip of her foot shaking its head back and forth, a deep squeak rumbling out from its throat. The blood seeped from her foot, billowing like a cloud outwards across the ocean.

Like many of the whales Una had seen from a distance, it enjoyed playing with its food, careful not to kill or damage it before it was ready. They were the killer dolphins of the sea, as enthralled with play as murder.

Her inability to control her body and the cold numbness the travel had claimed over her worked in her favour. Unable to thrash or fight back the Orca released her. Slowly she rose to the surface the creature close behind her its deep thrums sadistic giggles.

Gazing up, she could see the shadow of the bird moving above her. She had one chance. Though she couldn't know how high the creature flew, or in what direction she leaped. Kicking her feet strongly Una felt the cold burn of muscles pushed far passed their limit sizzle with exhaustion. Kicking harder, she could feel the predators parted maw at her heels. Leaping from the water, its mouth opening behind her she reached out both hands toward the bird, as if its talons were Synas hands themselves, outstretched to save her.

She was light, defying gravity. But the creature was fit and strong, while she was weak and exhausted. As her hand connected with the leathery talon of the bird the relief almost made her release. Her arm burned as the bird lurched up into the sky and the Orca fell back into the sea.

Tears blurred her eyes, overwhelmed with adrenaline and gratitude. Bowing her head for a moment Una prayed. For the first time her mind didn't travel to Laviku but to Dira. Death had set shackled her, and set her free. Like a game of cat and mouse she hadn't been willing to play. But in that moment she had flown, she knew Dira was her wings. Though no words were spoken aloud to the lady of the stilled heart, Una offered her faith to the Goddesses hands. She would never pray to another.
