18th of Spring 514 AV
Edwyn gave a muffled yawn, his small head poking up from underneath a lumped blanket. The tattered folds made the bed like a hilly land scape; a vista dotted with great valleys and rolling mounts, here and there stained by blotches of mud or grime. Drowsy Edwyn gave himself a shake, body quivering from the bridge of his snout, right down to the end of his tail where it ended in a quick wag. Much better, he thought blinking sleep from his eyes as he hopped energetically, down from the low spread to a hard stone floor beneath. The damp cold cut through his paws causing another shiver to run down his back.
Trying to ignore the unpleasant feeling, he trotted forwards, before stopping just below an old creaking table, one of the legs was bent at an angle while the rest of the piece was leaning delicately to a side as if just the slightest touch would send it toppling over. Among the dust and cracked stone underneath, sat a slimy almost undiscernible piece of meat, or at least, it kind of looked like meat… maybe it was just from last night, Edwyn wondered almost hopefully; feeling a bit peckish. He gave it a sniff –nope definitely not last night- then a tentative lap, yep, disgusting, but eh you never know. Snapping his mouth, he shut his jaws and instantly regretted it; managing a coughing gag before quickly hacking the greyish thing back out in a puddle of bile. Alright, the young Kelvic conceded, never mind. Bad idea. Really, bad idea. Still reeling Edwyn licked his chops; the taste of something rotting still lingering there. Turning he began to pace away; his step careful as to avoid the heaps of discarded items littering much of the floor. Nilika’s going to kill me he thought looking around, well that was if she ever came by. He hadn’t seen his friend in a while, just pondering the thought brought about a sudden sense of loneliness, well no not just loneliness more like- like- .Edwyn felt at a loss. It was as if the world was drained of something, something that now in its absence made the world seem just a shade darker, the sounds just a note less cheerful, the food at the stands always just that inch too far away… Edwyn’s stomach grumbled as if wishing to remind him of its plight as well, the thought of food not seeming to set well with an already queasy gut.
Suddenly a knock rang across the semi lit room, frame rattling as its rusted hinges bent against the strain. Edwyn froze, ears perked, tail standing taught in the air as he listened to the scarce echo fade away into nothingness. Had he heard that knock before? It had been important, he was almost certain, a good memor- Nilika?
He gave a hesitant bark, tail wagging ever so slowly as his ears strained for a single sound.
