Commonly known as Deadmans Fingers by the Inartans it was known as Green Fleece by the Charoda who equated its usefulness with the usefulness of fleece to the humans. It was meant humorously but was beyond the ability of so young a girl as Una to understand.

The seaweed accumulated along the beaches in Thunder Bay in thick braids. Like long underwater ladders. They could bridge meters and made large pools and stacks when caught on shore.

Una sat beside her mother watching as her fingers nimbly worked through the long tendrils drawing apart the clumps. Her childish fingers worked less efficiently through the seaweed fumbling as she drew out the larger pieces of shell and garbage. She would then hand it to her mother who would work out the smaller pieces, beyond her own skill. The hours went by agonizingly slowly as they went through each tendril picking out shells and prying clumps apart.

Each piece was laid across the rocky outcrop on which they rested, water splashing out across their legs and arms keeping them deliciously moist but gentle enough not to destroy the work before them. Una grumbled as she worked, it was a duty her and her sisters cycled through each moon and one of the most loathed chores. It made every part of you stink and the seaweed got caught beneath your finger nails irritatingly, it made your muscles ache and took several days to make the amount of paper her mother needed to sell.

There was little paper in the mountainous city, most was imported but some was made by her mother. The paper itself was difficult to deal and write on with Inartan implements and thus was typically bought only for paper in painters notebooks. Because of its waxy surface it made it one of the few papers that would allow for erasing.

"I'll start the fire while you finish up." Her mother announced as she rose stretching her aching muscles. Una nodded without glancing upward combing through the long tendrils and adding more to the hefty bundle. They had begun the process well before dawn and as the sun rose brilliantly hot above them they were just beginning the second step of the process.

"Will you cut the seaweed dear?" Her mother called having hefted her large cauldron atop the fire and awaiting the bubbles that would signal it was time to add the sand and seaweed. Nodding silently, it was too early for words, Una retrieved the long knife and began to awkwardly hack at the seaweed. Her mother didn't often let her use sharp utensils, both because of their danger and a general lack of use for them but the seaweed didn't need to be chopped beautifully it merely needed to be smaller.

It was the only fun in the whole process for the child and she eagerly wacked away at the seaweed moving each piece along the wooden slab that allowed her to cut without damaging the blade and tossing the little pieces into a large blue pottery container. Small dolphins and waves ran along the top and bottom in darker blue while the inside was stained green from its long use in this task. The green leached from the long seaweed strands staining Unas fingers.

Wrinkling her nose Una stretched her fingers out angrily struggling to wash them off in the water. She hated being dirty and knew from experience the green tinge would taint her fingers for several days even with her time in the water.

Several hours later her mother had hefted a large cauldron atop of the fire and had it bubbling with ferocity. Adding a hefty bag of glassblower sand to the water her mother placed a long thick spoon into its depth and began working the sand bottomed water in slow circles.

"Time to add the seaweed love..." Her mom chimed. Whimpering and groaning Una hoisted the heavy blue container down the tall rocky outcrop and into the pot. Her arms ached by the time she had finished. Leaning against the back of the cliff watching the water as it crept away from them exposing a long mass of white sandy beach Una stared at her mother hard at work. Adding a pound or two, an unrecognizable amount to Una, of Soda Ash from a large canvas bag it whistled as it slid into the water a soft tinkling noise that tickled Unas ears.

Singing and humming as she worked her mother obviously loved the toil and as she glanced at her daughter Una caught the delighted grin and couldn't help but return one of her own. Her family was so deliciously happy Una had no notion of what would come to pass, at the moment the worst thing in her life was this very chore.

"So why do we add the Seaweed, Soda Ash and the sand to the boiling water?"

"I dunno..." Una shrugged glancing away at the rocks. Wonder if I could climb them, more intrigued with action than anything her mom had to teach her.

"The Soda Ash destroys the plant fibers and the sand helps separate the usable and unusable parts from each other. It's important to make sure we separate it fully so w-"

"We cook it for three hours." Una mumbled blandly itching to run around.

Her mother laughed and waved her hands at her daughter tentacles wiggling around her lower back in amusement, "Alright, go play hon."

Scuttling away without so much as a goodbye Una disappeared across the beach.

~ 3 bells later ~

Una returned to her mothers side, the pot frothing and bubbling ferociously. Her face was smeared with mud and sand from playing on the beach and a broad grin slowly faded from her face as she returned to her task. Her sisters padded along the shore playing hide and go seek, amongst other games, while she had to toil away all day. The smell was deep and pungent making her gag as she approached.

"Mooooom," She whined as she approached, about to beg to be let off the hook for the rest of the day.

"Nope. It's your day hon." Her mom cut her off grinning wisely at the young Charoda. Pale plump cheeks whimpered and pink eyes teared up.

Huffing Una frowned as she held onto one side of the cauldron. Helping her mother tip the large iron container over, pouring it slowly into the open lipped blue container a little bit at a time. Grimacing under the weight Una almost dropped it on her toes as she settled it back on its bottom. Pouring out the salt laced water into the ocean the foamy lip settled out over the ocean. Scooping up fresh salt water they stirred the chunks slowly dumping out the water several times until the seaweed was clean.

Dumping it into a large stone bowl Una sat down with the pestle and began mashing the small pieces into a slurry. Slowly her mom kept washing smaller portions of seaweed and dumping the wet pieces into her white stone bowl. Arms aching as she switched hands frequently until it had made a thick green paste. Having washed out the soda ash and extra plant matter the mush smelled much less pungent and Una only heaved a couple times throughout the whole process.

The large stone bowl was wide mouthed and allowed the two of them to dip the two wire frames into the slurry. Framed with wood and a tight metal weave it was built to reflect the size of the piece of paper desired. Dipping it into the slurry horizontally Una pulled it back out while a layer of the pulp rested on the wire frame.

"What is this called again?" Her mother quizzed lifting the wooden frame towards Una.

"Uhm..." She whispered, "A frame a-and...not sure..." She finally answered after a chime of painful silence.

"Deckle." Her mom finished smiling reassuringly. Her other two children were confident and needed little encouragement but Una was a quiet child.

Una nodded quietly and watched, copying her mother as she tipped the mould and deckle onto the large glass surface used to dry the pages. Pulp downward toward the glass they gently pressed sponges against the metal mesh soaking up the remaining water and squeezing it out over the sand. They continued doing this, Unas eyes getting bleary as she watched the green fibres dry.

"I'm bored..." She whined as she began to peel the corner of the mold from the fibres. Achingly slowly her hand began to twitch daring her to tear it off more ferociously the action painful in its slowness. The paper tore along the edges slowly making Una groan as she pressed the back against it again squishing the fibres together again before returning to the slow process of pulling the back from the paper.

Laying the deckle and mould out to dry Una grabbed the next one continuing the process slowly her fingers stained a thick green as she dunked each mould in. By the time she had filled the five moulds and laid them out to dry she picked up the first one. The fibres were tightly woven only showing a minor scar from her first tear.

Tipping it onto its other end she gently flicked the back in each place until it had begun to separate from the wire mesh. Falling the inch to the glass sheet were it would finish drying. Una winced as the edges and corners began to tear as it fell, leaving an only roughly paper shaped form on the glass. Wincing, she glanced at her mothers perfectly formed paper and pouted to herself. Perhaps it would be worth the work if her work actually came out usable but every time her mother sent a letter on HER paper the family friends always noticed, commented, and laughed at her lack of progress.

The paper would be left all day to dry. There had been several times a rogue storm had appeared during the brilliantly hot day and ruined their entire work. Since then they had begun using the large slab of glass and moving the entire thing under a rocky outcrop to protect it somewhat from the elements. Unfortunately, it also slowed the drying process.

"Alright. I'll come and check on you every hour." Her mom reminded her as she moved to leave. Grumbling Una slid into the water beside her mother nodding quietly and moved to sit. Eyes peeked out above the water while the rest of her soaked in its delicious coolness. From there she would gaze for the rest of the day, slipping from the water every half an hour to flatten the shrinking sheets of paper with a rolling pin before she'd disappear back into the solace of the water.

It is going to be a long day...
