[Mithryn Outpost] Training Day

Syna was just rising in the east when he scraped up the last bit of his breakfast and shoveled it into his mouth. Jamie laid his fork on his plate with a satisfied clatter and leaned back in his chair. A hand patted his full stomach appreciatively. Eggs, a few cuts of ham, a hunk of cheese, all with a firm heel of bread softened with the grease off his plate. He'd enjoyed every bite. Jamie belched quietly under his breath and rose from the table before laying two silver pieces beside the scraped clean plate. Elliana Porter was a cold woman, but she could warm anyone up with her cooking. He'd give her that much. Farmers and families were still eating heartily when he left the Fool's Errand and made his way back to his small apartment.

He'd been meaning to buy a rug--or anything really--to spruce the place up. Bare stone walls, a cold hearth, and unmade bed greeted him. In the corner though, his new mews added some character to the room. At least, it gave the place a sense of being lived in. It was small enough to get through the door with some fighting, but nearly touched the ceiling when in place. It was a plain wooden box to keep his hawk secure and comfortable in the dark. He popped the latch, opened its small door, and was greeted by a quiet screech. Abina swiveled her head and looked at him from inside her dark cubby. A sharp beak opened nervously, and she fidgeted on her perch.

"Hush," he murmured quietly, and slipped on the heavy gloves he had tucked into his belt.

With a closed first, he slipped his arm inside and let her examine it. She stabbed once, twice, three times with her beak and nibbled on a leather covered knuckle. When she seemed satisfied, he grabbed her jesses firmly gave them a gently pull. She hopped over onto his arm and looked around quizzically when he pulled her out, right before a hood was slipped over her beak and fasted securely onto her face with a knot at the back. This was the extent of her current training. Jamie had bought her aware that she knew how to perch, be hooded, have her jesses worked with--nothing else. Abina knew no cues, nor any real skills. She was a clean slate, born in captivity, and for that he was a glad. He would rather have an untrained bird than a poorly trained one.

She would be his first attempt at training a hawk from scratch. His first bird had been an old kestrel who knew what to do better than Jamie had, as a beginner.
