Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

delivery!

43rd Day of Spring - 514 AV

Cain walked along in the crowds, a small, delicate package in his hands. The client had said to not break it, or else he’d be facing serious consequences. Of course! Cain had said at the time, but inside his head, he didn’t know if he could. When he had tried writing the first time, he that broke the pencil, which annoyed him and surprised him that he could. The crowd made it more difficult- damned pushing and the annoyance of it wanted to make him smash the thing in his hand.

Earlier, he had been trying to be polite, trying to keep saying, excuse me, but no one could hear him in that giant roar of people talking in the Zhongjie Warrens, talking about their wares. One even came up to him, with an exaggerated smile, and Cain narrowed his eyes at him, and he said, “Want this knife? A great deal, on-” He stopped in his tracks, as Cain stopped him from speaking, “Really? Nice to make you shut up with.” His voice was a soft growl, his eyes mischievous, however, pretty much stopping the intimidating mannerism. Still, the salesman backed away, and he smirked at him.

“Kidding.” He shouted, as he kept going on, smirk still on his face, and he remembered the directions of where to give the package. Right, right, left, right, and stop at a place with a tall man and thin as a stick, with blond hair. You won’t miss him, the client said. Stands out like a beacon. KInd of like you. But taller and with no white hair. The client annoyed him a bit, but still, he’d get mizas in his hand whenever he could.

He went in another directions, pushing against the crowd, much like the other people, not caring about the small grunts of annoyance from other people.

delivery!

Saffron quietly pulled her little dagger out from its concealed location under her simple canvas shirt. She grinned quietly. Crouched on the roof--she had gotten up there by means of ocelot form--her large eyes scanned the pushing crowd below. Vibrant colors of purple yellow red and blue popped back, mingled with the confused shouts of the crowd. She was perched above the mercantile district, vendors and annoying salesmen under bright tents screaming into the din. It was overwhelmingly loud and colorful. Saffron smiled even brighter. Excellent.

Saffron was watching with careful eyes for an unfortunate victim to pickpocket. Her skinny frame made it easy to slip in between pushing and shouting citizens, delicate fingers plucking wallets already hanging halfway out of pockets. Of course, Saffron's latest caretaker, Cyprus, would've highly disapproved of this exercise. Saffron shrugged at the thought. He kicked me out. Ma wouldn't have wanted me stuck with some smelly jerk.

Saffron finally clambered down the roof, having selected a victim. He had white hair and was uncommonly tall, striking among the dark-skinned and brown-eyed people that you found everywhere in Riverfall. As Saffron edged nearer she discovered flint-gray eyes and (better yet) he was holding a box labelled for delivery. Good. His hands are occupied.

Readying herself, feeling the thrill she always felt before stealing from someone, Saffron locked her fingers around the soft leather of the wallet, gently slipping it out of the back pocket of her unaware victim.

It felt heavy and fat, making Saffron grin maniacally with glee as she slipped it into her own pack.

Suddenly someone tapped Saffron on the shoulder. She whirled around, heart leaping, finding herself staring straight into the eyes of her victim stooping down to meet her gaze.

Cain kept moving, annoyance growing as the crowd kept moving against him, when he felt something behind him. He turned, his pocket lighter, the one with his purse. It had been there a few moments earlier, and it could’ve fell, but he doubted that. He saw a girl with golden hair running, then suddenly slow to a walk. His eyes narrowed towards her. The delivery could wait. HIs eyes followed her intently, and he quickly walked towards her, and tapped her on the shoulder.

So small, so short, so young. What was a young girl doing here? He didn’t mean teens as young, he meant young young YOUNG, like right about 5. He was tempted to sound menacing to her, just go get the package sent and get his money back, but instead he went for a softer tone, though it did sound strict, he thought, pulling her firmly away from the crowd. A small smirk touched his lips as he wondered what the girl thought- probably ones with a few curses if she was older.

He stopped at a corner, somewhat dark, and bent down to her height. “So, darling, why d’you need my money? “ He tilted his head in question. “If you really need it, I could give you some.” He grabbed the purse out of her pocket, checking quickly and putting it in his coat pocket. He looked directly into her eyes as he spoke, and the eyes surprised him. Mash of different colours, really. With the hair, and if she was well cared for, she could’ve been considered a beauty, he thought, but right now? No. The eyes had a hint of determination too, which was good. He looked at her clothes, which were dirty, which said everything. He didn’t give it to her yet, though. He wasn’t going to spill the whole purse on mizas on her, though he kind of got a good impression.. but kind of mixed.

OOC: I don't think we need to knock Saff out or anything. Hope it's okay.

Saffron swallowed. She felt her confidence shift slightly away, but it returned quickly. She pouted, unsure of what to say. The two were now a disturbance in the river of people, being shoved this way and that as citizens swelled and pushed around them. There was an uncomfortable pause as Saffron slowly began her sentence.

"Sorry," she said softly, barely audible against the screaming crowd.

Saffron wanted with all her heart to turn and run away, to hide, to seek cover. But...there was something about the stranger. Kindness, maybe? Saffron shook her head. Such a thing doesn't exist. Even so--that money would be nice. Should I stick around?

Saffron was quiet for a while, contemplating. The stranger waited patiently, package still in hand. Finally, after a long silence, Saffron spoke. "Can I come with you?" Saffron bit her lip. Normally I wouldn't enter myself into such endeavors, but this may lead to something. Saffron cleared her throat. "Can I come with you," she said again, "please?"

He waited and waited, impatience growing. Once he heard her voice, he wanted to grin, but the only voice that came out was “Sorry.” He rolled his eyes in slight annoyance, and sighed, shrugging. “It’s fine, I guess.” Though she’d chose to do it, there was a reason why. He didn’t have to like it though, yeah? There was a pause again, which annoyed him, but he waited.

“Can I come with you?” He blinked, surprised. HIs first thought was, why the hell would I bring a thief with me here to deliver this? But she did have a reason, but ugh whatever. He’d just have to keep the mizas out of reach from her hands, and hopefully she didn’t steal anything from the bazaar areas. It would be awkward if someone caught her with something she and she’d was following her.

“AIght. You better not steal anything, yeah? Not even other peoples.” As he said this, he put the purse in one of his inside coat pockets incase. He stood up again, moving his legs a bit, hurting a bit from the crouching, but it was fine. He looked down to her, and said, “Let’s so, yeah?” He awkwardly took her hand, and started to walk in the direction. Right, he thought, hoping he was right, then, right left right. “You have any parents..” He paused, realizing he didn’t get her name. If his hands were free, he would've slapped himself in the head.

“Uhm, ignore that question for now. What’s your name? Name’s Cain, by the way. Nice to meet you.” He smiled a bit at the last part- if the child was any older, he probably would’ve started cursing them and perhaps knocking her out, rather than staying polite like now.

Saffron lay her hand into Cain's. Her palms were considerably dwarfed in his hands as Cain led her through the swelling crowd. Saffron found by following close at Cain's heels, she could avoid being knocked over by people.

Saffron looked around, Cain close by. Of course, Saffron had agreed not to steal anyone's stuff...well, it was only a matter of time before she pickpocketed someone again.

"Hello, Cain. I'm Saffron."

Cain merely looked down to Saffron and smiled faintly. They walked in silence for a while before breaking away from the crowd, slipping into an alley.

Saffron looked at the box Cain held. It was labeled 'FRAGILE' in large print. Next to it was an address. "What's the box for?" Saffron asked, curious.

Sweat grew on his hand as he held her hand, and as they pushed against the crowds. “Hello, Cain. I’m Saffron.” She said, and he didn’t bother to answer. “What’s the package for?” She asked, and he replied, “ A delivery. What I usually do nowadays, haven’t seen any caravans to protect or stuff like that. More boring most of the time, but more mizas, which is good. C’mon- we’re almost there.” He took the last turn, and looked around.

“Looking for a tall man. Kind of like me, but no white hair. I suppose that meant he’s young. Also, a bit taller.” He looked around the booths, but it was hard around this massive sea of people.

"D'ya know what's in it?" Saffron bounced along, tiny legs moving fast to keep up with Cain's long strides.

When Cain replied no, Saffron frowned. "You mean when they told you not to open it, you actually listened?"

Saffron frowned again and made a face. "You're boring. I would've looked in it already by now."

When Cain didn't reply, Saffron grew silent too. After a while, Cain stopped abruptly.

Saffron tugged on his hand. "What is it," she asked, "Are we there yet?"
