The spirit shivered as she spoke to it, his head turning slowly to face her, body wavering in the own light its ethereal body cast into the gloom. Seemingly unable to see her, he searched around hands half-heartedly batting the air in front of him before he spotted her. A heavy, worldly sigh was cast from the steady swirl within him. "She's not here..." There was a great sadness in his voice, a shiver of oppressive certainty. "I've looked for her for so long... And she's nowhere."

His eyes flashed for a moment. "Nowhere!"

Several of the cords holding the crates snapped, whipping into the air with a sharp whistle as the ship rocked. Whether it was by the ghosts power or a weakness of the hemp, the noise was loud enough to startle the unprepared. After the display, however, the man broke back down into sobs, his feet drifting above the ground as his body flickered between materialization and the smoky fog of the restless dead.

Shai ducked immediately whether the ropes were headed for her not. Crouched low as they snapped releasing their tension. If it was the ghost’s doing, she would have to stay light on her toes. Back out of the immediate way of the now loose cargo, the widow locked her gaze on the ghost. To her it seemed as though the specter was throwing a tantrum and Shai had plenty of experience there.

Hopping up onto a couple of barrels still leashed in place, she gathered herself up into a lazy perch. Once again fiddling with the vial between her long fingers, watching it rather than ghost. In fact, for several moments it seemed she intended to ignore him entirely. Then out of her silence she spoke suddenly, “If you cannot communicate properly no one will ever help you.” The statement sounded almost too bored to be patronizing. Children’s fits were played out after a mother had seen it a dozen times, after that few could move her. Internally she set in place in a safeguard in case the ghost raged, Chell, watch for us.

Holding the vial in both hands, she exemplified her apathy by slowly working out a shield. The little jewelry chest of djed’s loosen lock clicked open in her mind, from it she drew out threads of the essence of magic. Drawing them down her arms and then out through her palms to cocoon around the vial. It was an intrigue prospect to shield something so small, a problem to work through. The normal way Shai envisioned a shield was a woven cloth, but with something so small the weave would need to be infinitely more intricate. So, as an experiment, rather than weaving she spun. Pulling the thread around the vial, she wrapped it up like a bandage. Eventually when she covered the whole of the vial in the cocooned djed thread, she tasked it, Against Sound. Her designation was mostly arbitrary, against light and against sound were the two tasks she most often employed. In fact she had never attempted any other, it had simply never come up in the course of her work. Sound and sight were the main enemies of a thief.

"I- We-" The ghost looked up at the woman with a mix of confusion and awe. His skin shifted from pale, ghastly off-white to a solid, darkened tan. His face became that of a man's once more, eyes bleary from the irritation of tears. It seemed there was effort involved to a great degree as he made himself physical once more. When his feet hit the ground with a soft tap, the man drew a wet sniffle, wiping his nose on his dark red coat's arm, eyes fixed on the woman who had spoken so sternly yet so apathetically at the same time. "I'm... I'm sorry."

He wrung his hands, nervously chewing on the inside of his cheek. "H-help..." He shook his head, a bitter frown on his face. "They've all tried to help. No one ever helps. Everyone is just..." His fists clenched as he grit his teeth. "Just..." Staring down at the ground, he let out a frustrated sigh. It was clear he was, for whatever reason, lucid. He averted his gaze from the superior position of the woman he spoke to, instead, fidgeting in his place. "They... Don't understand. I don't understand. She's gone and... I'm..." His frown quivered. "Here."

With a start, he looked up at her, eyes searching though for what was unclear. "You know, don't you? You know what's it's like to look for... For someone. Some...thing." He frowned, shaking his head. "No, of- of course not. No one knows, they all just... just stare and..." The man's speech began to degrade back into mumbling as his hands moved to grip onto either side of his head. The chill in the room had dropped some more as his voice lowered and body flickered.
