So You Want to be a Knight? (Part Three)

Clang

There is a distinct disadvantage here… He thought

BANG

A very large disadvantage here…

The Eypharian squire had been locked in hard combat for a little over five chimes with a large man, also a squire, with pectorals the size of Aventis’ skull and a hammer even larger. Though Aventis could easily see a good six or seven inches over the top of the nameless human squire’s head, the Eypharian was getting his four-armed ass beaten.

For today’s practice, Aventis was being given a quiz by his knight, who was comfortably lounging off to the sides, watching the battle from a safe distance. It was Ser Utis that had placed his squire in the situation, though it was a bit kind of him to lend Aventis a suit of plate armor, which was quite difficult to move in, and a shield, which has more than once saved the plate armor from the opponent’s massive hammer.

I would say you’re doing great, kid, but…” Utis yelled out as Aventis barely dodged another blow from the opposing squire’s war hammer. The opposing squire, who was also suited in full armor, severely outmatched Aventis in nearly every way. It was a miracle that the squire stood a chance as is, especially considering his arms, which he was not used to using. In his top left he held his shortsword, in its, opposite, the rapier. In the bottom right, the shield borrowed. It weighed him down. This had to be remedied with tact, which the Eypharian could not think of at the moment

Thing is, you’re not doing great.

The opponent squire took the hammer in both hands and swung it to the left, where Aventis stood. He jumped back, out of the hammer’s reach, and the first opportunity he could, attempted to step on the head of the hammer. The opponent, however, anticipated the attack. In response, he drew the hammer back, and shot it at the squire, whose only choice was to block with the shield. It wasn’t, however, quite as easy to compensate for the power. While Aventis saved his armor and his shield, his rear was in a different position, i.e. sitting position on the ground. Because it was getting kicked.

Alright, Squire. Here’s the hard part.” The knight yelled out once more.

Aventis groaned as he struggled against gravity to get up off of the ground. He readied himself again and prematurely stepped left, knowing that the opponent, from previous swings, was right handed and therefore could not reach as far.

“Ready, ser.” Aventis yelled just loud enough to be heard, although not too enthusiastically.

So You Want to be a Knight? (Part Three)

The meaty man made a swing again, this time bending it low, knowing Aventis was using the suit of armor for the first time and somewhat unaccustomed and therefore could not jump or dodge relatively as easily. He wasn’t entirely a meathead nincompoop so chances of actually getting injured badly were slim, but this was annoying to say the least.

His strategy was successful in what it was most likely trying to do, which is trip the Eypharian. This was getting somewhat tedious, for sure. It wasn’t the first - not even the fifth - time it had happened, either. The man had a clear advantage and it was becoming difficult for Aventis to deal with not being excessively violent. He wasn’t used to the weight of his armor. He wasn’t used to the encumberment of multiple weapons. He had to find a way to deal with all of them.

What god is Syliras named after, kid? Utis yelled out, apparently taking the time Aventis was spending rolling on his back like an armored turtle as the best available to learn him.

Aventis sighed, thinking a moment as he once again pushed himself up off the ground. He had heard mention of it multiple times and he knew the answer off the top of his head. He knew it was Sylir. He didn’t know much about Sylir, no, but he knew it was Sylir. Another thing he knew is that Utis had a reason for all of this. If he wanted to teach Aventis, he’d flat out do it. If he wanted to train him, he’d flat out do it.

He was being clever.

Aventis stood, getting himself battle ready once more, facing the meaty squire who had his incredible hammer rested against his humongous shoulder. He swallowed his pride and braced himself for what he was almost certain was going to come.

“I don’t know, ser.”

Almost on queue, the huge squire swung his hammer down at the Eypharian. This time Aventis had a plan.

As the hammer swung down, Aventis checked his weight and sidestepped to the left. Aiming for the bit of the hammer’s pole just at the foot of the place of impact, he threw his shield arm forward, his fingers that he would hit it before it landed.

Success! The hammer dragged the massive squire’s body in the direction of the blow, giving Aventis time to spin on heel and around to the back of him, where, with the pommel of his shortsword, he swung at the base of his spine.

The squire sprung up, his hammer hitting the ground with a clang! It was Aventis’ opportunity to gain the upper hand, or at least learn Utis’ doings.

As soon as Aventis knew the hammer was out of hand, he swung himself around to his frontside, locked eyes on his cheek, and with his free hand threw a punch, which caught him surely in the side of his head, but didn’t seem to phase him badly. He quickly recovered and threw a heavy fist at Aventis’ gut. He couldn’t jump back as he would normally, but had tried anyway upon instinct. The hit jostled him but he remained standing, back in the position he was a few ticks prior. The massive squire picked up his hammer.

Aventis had learned how to beat the meathead, and he had learned Utis’ plan.

It’s Sylir, dumbass.

Alright fine. I have a feeling you’re just being a little shyke about this so I’ll ask another.” Utis yelled again, sitting atop his wooden stool of a throne.

Neither objects on the field made a move. The massive squire was waiting for a queue, and Aventis felt that if he made a move on him he would easily counter it, perhaps even break one of his weapons.

He kind of needed those.

Alright kid. What’s Sylir the god of?” The old knight yelled.

This was common knowledge. Aventis knew that Sylir was the god of Syliras and knights and stuff right off the top of his head. And… Like… Not fighting and stuff. But there was an end goal to be gained here.

Defeating that sick bastard of a knight.

Aventis knew what would happen if he answered incorrectly. The meaty squire before him would swing that massive malet and engage in a match. He would try to know Aventis onto the ground. Or, if the Eypharian, on the off chance of actually succeeding in the match, would settle down and recombobulate. But what wasn’t known is what happens if Aventis answered the question correctly.

“Peace, knights, and Syliras, ser.” Aventis called out.

The knight took a moment, resting his head on his armored fist as he thought about his squire’s answer.

Yeah… Yeah close enough. No one’s gonna’ call you out on it. But technically it’s ‘peace’ and ‘civilization’. Don’t you dare petch that up if you’re talking about Sylir to a nonbeliever.

And with that, Utis nodded at the large man, who returned his gaze.

You said he wouldn’t get this stuff right!” he groaned in the whisper/yell fashion that mostly morons used to ensure that the other force could not understand him.

Obviously not the brightest, this one.

Utis shrugged in response to the large man’s complaints, and in return the large man laid down his hammer, shuffled towards Aventis with his arms open. After Aventis had lowered his own weapons, the Eypharian was embraced in a sweaty meathug.

Words could not describe the confusion and disgust that the squire had felt.

See! Positive reinforcement! Who ever said I don’t care?” Utis yelled out from atop his stool as a page approached him with a breadstick and a waterskin.

The petcher was getting comfy.

The meaty man let go of the embrace and stepped back into position, leaving Aventis’ borrowed armor smelling like BO and leaving Aventis with a deeply rooted hope that he wouldn’t need to wash the armor after the fight.

The massive squire once again retrieved his weapon, stood, and held the hammer upon his shoulder once more, waiting for another queue.

Right, then!” Utis yelled out in between bites of his lunch. He took another big bite, seemingly just to offput his squire (which it did) before continuing. “I need you to tell me who runs this joint.

“The knighthood, ser?” Aventis asked.

The knight shrugged, weighing the question. “That too, but I meant Syliras.

Aventis stopped to think. The most obvious answer was the knights, but that didn’t seem quite right. They weren’t in charge of legislation, they were in charge of enforcement. Aventis, in all of his life, had only heard one name likened to politics, and he didn’t know much about him, but it was the only answer he had.

“Dyres.”

Dyres? I know a lot of Dyres. I know the Dyres district. I know Dyres the founder of Syliras. I’ve met a dire wolf. Specify.

“I, um… I don’t know, ser.”

WHAM

The meaty squire had slammed his hammer into Aventis’ chest once more, thrusting him back. The weight of the armor was still too much to recover from, and the Eypharian squire toppled over once more.

LOREN. LOREN Dyres. His name is Loren.

Aventis sighed in bitter contempt as he struggled against gravity to once more get up on his feet and assume a battle stance.

He had a plan, now. He knew how to take him down. The next question he had to fail.

After this one we’re calling it a day. Next time we meet, we have a quiz.” Utis yelled out.

The meaty squire was looking tired, heavy with fatigue and dripping in well-earned sweat, and yet he held his weapon close and diligently. Of course, Aventis was also tired. He was aching at his core, his hands would be covered in rough calluses, and the armor put the weight of the world on his bruised and battered shoulders, but he wouldn’t dare call himself tired.

He wasn’t allowed to be tired. Not until he had won.

Alright kiddo. There are three gods that guide our little Knighthood who aren’t Sylir. Name one.” Utis yelled, without skipping a beat. He seemed to understand exactly what Aventis should be expected to know, and doubled it. The bastard.

What Utis probably did know is that Aventis didn’t have the slightest idea how to answer. What Utis most likely did not know is that Aventis didn’t want to know. All Aventis wanted was to win.

“I don’t know, ser.” Aventis muttered.

With no time to lose, the opposing squire shifted his stance and swung at the Eypharian from the left. Exactly what was expected.

Aventis had, luckily, correctly calculated how much slower he would be with the armor, but he was no longer trying to limit his energy. This was the last stand.

He swung his shield at the hammer, his feet positioned to brace for the blow that would follow. As the hammer’s head made contact with the shield, Aventis could feel the shock run through his arm, intensifying further the pain he felt, but it mattered none.

The hammer was stopped against the shield. Aventis didn’t have much time. This was the maximum amount of energy he had to exert, and he knew it would hurt. The shield had stopped the sweeping blow of the opponent’s hammer, and he didn’t have much time until it was recovered with another blow. Quickly, Aventis turned and stepped on the neck of the hammer. He knew his opponent was more than strong enough to flick him off in half a tick, so a distraction was necessary.

Aventis swung his rapier hand hilt-forward into the opponent’s head. He bellowed a deep grunt in response, his face contorted and obviously stressed with pain. But this was not the end.

The squire quickly identified where his meaty opponent’s grip was centered. This had to be eliminated. With his shortsword hand, Aventis poked the fingers of his opponent quickly and accurately, which resulted in a scratch on his left thumb and right middle finger.

He reacted as expected, pulling his hands away. This is when the battle had to be won.

As the hammer fell, Aventis had to reconsider his weight as to not become offbalanced and lose the upper hand, which wasn’t hard. He kicked the hammer behind him as he extended his rapier to the throat of his opponent, whose hands were firmly stretched towards the air.

Okay nice. The gods are Wysar, Tyveth, and Yahal. Do some research.” Utis said as he stood from his stool and calmly walked away, apparently finished with the encounter as a whole.

Aventis lowered his blade, sheathed his weapons, and followed suit.

He felt a nap coming on.

Extras :
Well this was a refreshingly original twist on a training thread. I really enjoyed reading it and seeing Aventis' thought processes. Just a quick note on dual-wielding. Technically you can't dual-wield with a short-sword until you reach 30 points in it. However since you didn't really use them in tandem, just held onto both I didn't see an issue. Nicely done.

Don't forget to edit or delete your grade request in the grade request thread.

If you have any questions or concerns about your grade please feel free to send me a message.
