Spring 78th 515 AV

The Dhani were gathering around the Black Rock merchants like greedy children grabbing for a last piece of candy. They were moving down the cavern carrying heavy trunks. Jovial laughter ricocheted between them as they had finally ended their long journey. It had been a long time since the merchants had been to Zinrah as it was difficult to have large parties enter and leave unnoticed by the Myrians. Fortunately, the people from Black Rock were on equally good terms with the Myrians and could make it through the jungle relatively unharmed…at least from the sentient creatures who prowled its depths.

However, it wouldn’t be till the next day that they were ready to begin selling their wares. First they would get settled and gather in the distillery to share and exchange story and tales of what had happened since the last time the merchants had been in the cavernous city. Ayszel grinned with delight as she moved with the hordes of fellow Dhani towards the distillery. She and Rixal hadn’t spoken since yesterdays debauchery and even though she easily spotted the flickering red hair in the crowd she was determined not to speak to her.

Some of the quieter merchants, especially the Charoda who often felt uneasy near so many predators chose to remain in private rooms but the larger group of them gathered in the main area to drink and party copiously.

Ayszel however, was more interested in the Charoda than the lively debates among the others. So as the group gathered at the fine wooden counters to ask for a private room Ayszel bravely sidled up amongst their ranks. Of course, her long serpentine form and intense hair and skin stood out among the group and several turned to watch her suspiciously while they waited to be escorted.

“I would love to join you, if you will have me.” She asked genuinely. However, while the majority stayed silent two rapidly shook their heads.

“We would prefer to have the time to ourselves…” One spoke slowly. Her fine pastel green skin was a familiar colour among the Dhani but her long tentacles that tickled her lower back moved of their own accord making Ayszel shiver unnerved.

“I have plenty of stories to tell….” She tried convincingly, “and I’ll pay for drinks.” This got their attention and they turned to gaze at Ayszel before the pastel Charoda nodded slowly.

“Alright…you may join us.” She murmured, her voice the uncanny singsong of Whales and Dolphins, almost squeaky in cadence.

Ayszel grinned and as Nessyl gathered them with her and into the private room. Ayszel followed behind them , drawing the privacy curtains closed behind her. The table was round and surrounded by a stone bench.

“This is the worst part about coming to Zinrah, stone chairs. My poor aching back.” The eldest male said as he slid in first. Though Ayszel could not have told his age apart from all the others, their slippery rubbery skin not revealing age, she couldn’t help the scowl that accompanied an insult to her city. However, the man noticed the insulted look and raised his hands with what appeared to be a genuine apology, “I’m sorry, I meant no insult. It’s just hard on us is all. We like your humidity just fine.” He added with a grin, which contagiously infected Ayszel with a grin of her own.

When they had finally settled themselves about the table, Ayszel was gently placed beside the pastel coloured female. Extending a hand she offered an introduction, complete with full name and the name of her mother. The Charoda extended her own hand with a sharp-toothed smile, “Sibilance, but you may call me Lacey.” Ayszel shook her hand good-naturedly.

Vinessyless entered their shrouded private room and lit the many lanterns in the corners much to the Charodas glee, “Thank you dear, you know just what we like,” The elderly man grinned, “Four White Scales, as usual” he ordered for the group of Charoda.

“And a glass of Blood Wine.” Ayszel added.

“So what do you want Dhani child?” The elderly man asked when the owner had disappeared behind the dark heavy curtains.

Receipt :
White Scales x 4 = -4 GM
Blood Wine x 1= -5 SM

Glancing up at the man Ayszel smiled softly, her sharp teeth matching the form if not the function of his own.

“I can see you respect honesty sire, while I am here to hear and share stories of our two worlds I must admit I have an extensive shopping list and being friends with those I will barter with later can only help right?” She offered with an impish wink.

The men and women roared with laughter at her playful jibe, “Oh don’t think we will go easy on you just because you amuse us tonight child. We didn’t trek halfway across the jungle to have you pull our wares out for nothing. What is it you are looking for child?”

Ayszel chuckled in reply and grinned,“well if I told you that, you’d know which item I really wanted that I barter for and drive up the price now wouldn’t you?” She replied with a sassy wiggle of her head. Another roar of laughter raced around the table as the man beat his fist against the table, “Well you certainly know what you’re doing miss.” He replied.

“It’s not that I know what I’m doing sir, in all honesty. Rather, we know better in Zinrah to tell anyone what we really want. Knowledge is power after all.”

He nodded wisely in response just as the drinks were delivered on a thin wooden tray. In tall, rather elegant glasses for the occasion, Each of theirs was a transparent white wine coloured beverage with tinkling bubbles that drifted up from the bottom and edges of the glass. Ayszels in comparison was a deep rich red wine as solid in taste as appearance. Raising it to her lips she took a delicate sip, closing her eyes as it slid down, cold, down her warm throat.

Refreshing as it was the Charoda were more thirsty than she had considered they could ever be and quickly ordered another round of drinks making Ayszel wince inwardly. She had plenty of savings from the previous year but she knew how quickly philtering ingredients and supplies could diminish her petty resources.

“Alright, so you are paying for our drinks for the night, I suppose the least we could do is give you a few stories for your trouble as requested?” He finally said when they had begun to wet their thirst, “What would you like to know?”

Ayszels curiosity was endless, but a barrage of questions she knew led to insufficient answers at each step. Better to start with one at a time.

“Well, why don’t you start with telling me about your Spring so far?”

“You bought us drinks just to ask us how we are doing in Dira’s home?”

“Nooo…but it is the polite place to start. Besides, how will I know which of my endless questions your experiences will best answer if I don’t know about your lives?”

“Haha, you have us there little shrimpling.”

“Well we had some delightful storms this season. You see, Black Rock is usually a very temperate little island. May Makutsi continue to watch over our flocks.” Lacey prayed, her hands emphatically waving in the air. The whole group spoke with their entire bodies when they moved, slowly loosening Ayszel up until she was speaking almost as emphatically and physically as they.

“Flocks? I thought that Black Rock was too rocky for flocks or crops?”

“Oh no, we don’t have many crops that aren’t underwater. We do have small flocks though, particularly Fargholian Cattle.”

“What do you use cattle for?”

“Milk mainly, though even the cows have horns so we often use the horns for goods as well. Their milk is particularly beloved by Spiritists, though I admit I haven’t the faintist idea why.”

“It’s cause they’re creatures given to Black Rock by Caiyha and Dira Lacey. They got somethin’ special in ‘dem blood that makes their milk powerful.” Ayszels ears perked at the mention of Caiyha and she listened carefully and grinned at the elderly Charoda.

“Why did Caiyha and Dira give Black Rock the, what did you say their name was again?”

“Fargholian Cattle. The tale begins on the beach of a Myrian Village, an exile, no one can much remember her name, found a group of Charoda. They had been washed up by a wicked water storm. She saved their lives.” A Myrian showing mercy…I don’t believe such a think…Besides if one ever did, I can see why they’d be disgraced and exiled Ayszel thought, but kept her thoughts to herself. These Charoda traded with several of the Myrian villages and it would do her no service to insult them aloud.

“She went with them to Black Rock and lived an isolated and lonely life until she died. There she remained a Ghost for many years trying to move on, back into the cycle so they say. Dira came to her, granted after many years of dedication and praying, she offered the woman a chance to return to the great cycle. The woman, despite her contentedness on the island, knew it was time to live true death and be reborn. The spiritist that helped her move on was granted two calves by Caiyha. They have beautiful black and white pelts yah know. Them pelts are treasured by their owners for their entire lives. Lotsa you Dhani have expressed interest in having one, but we can never get a soul” He chuckled at his own joke then, “to part with one of ‘em.”

Ayszel grinned throughout the story, she loved tales of her beloved nature goddess, all the more when she was portrayed in all her kindness. She had given much to the people of Zinrah and she wasn’t surprised to hear that the lovely Woman of the Jungle had given gifts to others.

“They sound like delightfully beautiful creatures.” Ayszel responded politely.

“Yes! In fact, twins were born this very season. Delightfully docile and sweet little things they are.” Lacey cooed.

“What of you? What creatures do you treasure?” Ayszel asked as she placed her elbows on the table, resting her chin on her flattened hands. Her drink was half empty at this point and she left it to the side for a moment, entranced with the bubbling words of the foreigners.

“Well we have the Seahorses of course. They are huge, large enough to carry us through the seas anyway. Nothing like the little cousins you’ve ever seen.”

“Oh! I have never been to the ocean, so I’ve never seen a Seahorse.” Ayszel replied hastily, “What do they look like?”

“Oh well...” Lacey halted, eyes rolling back as she thought, “they’re so hard to describe. Josephul?” She asked the older Dhani. Ayszel turned her eyes to his darker blue form, a long sharlike protrusion from his head bouncing as he rummaged through the small satchel at his side.

Finally, he pulled a small journal from its depths and removed a water colour painting of a brilliantly colourful seahorses.

“May I?” Ayszel asked, careful to employ all the politeness and respect she had been taught as a snakeling, admittedly she had not had much practice which explained her sprawling elbows on the table.

“Of course,” He replied, handing the thick paper over to her.

The paper was thick and made of several pieces of a peculiar type of seaweed Ayszel had never seen before. Painted across its surface was a cacophony of colours creating what Ayszel assumed to be some sort of coral bed. The Seahorses tails were tangled along some red protrusions. They looked like reptilian ant eater heads on pregnant Dhani bodies and Ayszel couldn’t resist the laughter that flickered from her lips.

“Oh come now, don’t laugh at our precious creatures. They’re less bumbling than they look.” He laughed.

“Oh no of course, they are Caiyha’s children. They are beautiful.” She replied offering the painting back.

Putting his hands up and shaking his head he smiled at her broadly, “Come now. You keep it, its just a quick little sketch after all, and I get to see them all the time.” Eyes widening with glee Ayszel pulled the painting back to herself, a childishly broad grin lacing across her wide lips.

“Oh thank you sir! It’s exquisite!” She drew the picture to her chest, a show of how much she loved it. Not daring to place it on the table should anything spill she placed it on the empty spot beside herself and undid the belted sleeve across her chest. Though she was loathe to reveal the effects of reimancy it was worth it to keep the gift safe. Coiling the paper into a loose tube she slipped it into the sleeve to be easily carried and protected until she could place it in her families almanac.

“Oh gosh!” Lacey gasped, covering her mouth and recoiling as her shoulder faced the charoda woman as she bent to protect the scroll.

“Shush now Lacey, don’t be rude.” One of the other Dhani said slapping her shoulder very gently in warning.

The gasp sent a flush along Ayszels chest and cheeks as she sat erect again. However, after that outburst everyone politely ignored the pebbly white sandy texture of her left arm and the protrusions that deformed her shoulder making it difficult to lift the drink to her lips.

“So, you ride the seahorses?” She knew the answer already, but was relieved to hear the conversation moving along.

“Oh yes, we have races and everything!” One of the younger green coloured Charoda echoed with exuberance, “and we play hide and seek. The Seahorses can camoflauge themselves and their riders!” Ayszels thoughts of her shoulder were banished in that moment. If I could find a way to philter that quality into a potion…or even just get a hold of the ingredient…just think of what Sora would trade me!

“Oh really?!”

“Oh yes!”

“Perhaps this is ungraceful to say, but is it possible to bring a Seahorse here? Or perhaps you brought dried seahorses with you?” She asked tentatively hoping the question wouldn’t disrupt the easy friendship.

“Well….we do have a few infact…but they aren’t a popular type of jewelry here like they are in other places since they lose all their colour when preserved and you Dhani people are all about colourful jewelry.” He chuckled. Ayszel kept the disappointed expression from her face. Well…it would have been a neat idea.

“Well say what, you guys bring me some dried unpreserved Seahorse next time you come to trade, yes?”

“Unpreserved? You wont be able to use it for anything if it’s unpreserved.” Lacey echoed, brow furrowing. Ayszel almost answered, revealing her plan but quickly shushed herself. She wasn’t sure what reaction it would bring from the Charoda, safer to stick with a simpler reason.

“Yes, but I would love to see their real colour. Perhaps I could even use it for a pigment.” She explained with innocent smile. Everyone nodded and smiled, and the conversation moved on, except for Josephul who looked at Ayszel with a critical frown for a moment before allowing himself to be swept away in the conversation.

“What of Zinrah? How has your Spring been?” Ayszel smiled and nodded at his drink, “I’m paying for the drinks, so I get to ask the questions right?”

Josehul nodded with laughing eyes and grinned at the brunette Dhani that had entered to check on them, “In that case! Another round?” Ayszel laughed, at this point the Charoda were quite tipsy from the many glasses and the relaxation that accompanied the end of a long journey.

“Oh! Some Konti from the Opal Order arrived in early spring. Three bright little things,” The green skinned Charoda tapped her chin lazily as she thought back,

“We traded plenty with them, and got a couple nick knacks. They seemed more than willing to trade just about everything they brought for simply knowledge. It was delightful to see such exuberance for learning, I must say.” She clapped delightedly.

“Konti? Opal Order?” Ayszel asked curiously, “What sorts of things did they bring?” She would have asked more questions but managed to halt herself a reasonable way through them making the group laugh.

“The glittering white women of the White Isle?” Lacey replied, mock surprise flitting across her face playfully, “you’ve never heard of them?”

“No, not at all. The only people we see are those from Black Rock and Myrians on a regular basis, no one else dares tread through the jungle after all.” She replied hesistantly slightly put out that they were treating her as if she were an ignorant young snakeling.

“Oh they are exquisite women!” Lacey exclaimed, her words slipping together from all the alcohol, “Hair and skin as white as Leth himself. They look like humans but they joined us as much in the water as on the land. Delightful creatures indeed, all female though, poor things, they have no one to call their own. They brought some books and perfume.” She rambled on.

“What kind of books?...and Perfume? ” Ayszel echoed, falling into the conversation between them as the rest of the Charoda fell into their own. However inebriated this girl gets I mustn’t draw attention to what I’m truly interested in. She thought carefully. Books in Zinrah were exceedingly rare, each falling apart due to the moisture. The pages that made up Ayszels families almanac were from a waxy leaf that made it difficult to write on clearly but resisted much of the degradation. Other forms of paper however, did not. Those that did were housed largely by the priestesses.

“Not much to be honest, and we hardly brought anything beyond what we thought the Priestesses usually buy.” Her articulate tongue losing out on the battle against the alcohol, “We brought some healing and herbalism books of course, but there was also a childrens journal which I read on my way here. Cute little thing it was. The perfumes are the bulk of what we brought, you Dhani always smell so dank and filthy afterall,” Ayszel took no offence, the girl was far too drunk to control her own words and she wanted to keep her talking. “They’re a whole range of scents I’ve never even fathomed existed to be honest.” She burped a watery winey burp before laying her head on the cool table.

“Do you think I could get a chance to look at the books before the Priestesses” Ayszel urged in a hushed tone.

“Oh no no no…don’t think you can get away with that just because you got me drunk little Dhani child. We get the best price out of the Priestesses…can’t go giving that away just to you!”

“Oh no! You don’t have to sell me them! I just want a look.” Ayszel smiled hopefully.

“Hmmm..”

“I think it’s time we were off about about the bed.” The elderly man spoke up, watching the heads of his companions begin to loll on the table.

“I can help.” Ayszel offered, extending an arm around Lacey as she pulled the woman up around her.”

“Oh yes my girl, that would be greatly appreciated.” He replied as he gathered the other two Charoda about his arms. Stumbling their way clumsily out of the Distillery they made their way to their temporary caves. Guards were posted at the entrance to their caves, guarding the many belongings they would trade in the morning. A courtesy thoughtfully, and selfishly, extended by the Dhani
Queens who wished the merchants to come back again in the future, despite how dangerous the trip was.

Ayszel helped the woman into the stone bed, lined with moss collected specifically for their arrival and drawing up a basin collected some fresh warm water from the spring that trickled up into the cave providing enough water to wash ones hands or for a small sip of water.

Bringing it to the Charodas lips she gently encouraged her to sip, stroking her rubbery tentacles awkwardly as her mother had first stroked her hair the first time she had become overly inebriated. I have the ingredients for some hangover teas…they’ll certainly help this bunch tomorrow. Ayszel decided quickly that she must make some tonight. The merchants had shown her a delightful night and though it had cost her a good chunk of miza it had been a delightful night. Taking out the painting from the sleeve she folded it beneath the Charoda’s head, making a thin and lumpy pillow.

“Ssssleeep little ssssnakeling
Don’t hisss a word. Mamaassss gunna get you Sssssalamander corpssse…
And if that Sssalamander gone and diesssss,
Mamassss going to bake you Sssssweet chocolatessss piessss,
And if those Pieessss burnnnn
You’ll ssssstilll be the sweetesssst baby in nesssst.”

Ayszel sang softly to the young woman, the lullaby her mother had once sung to her. The words made small tears growin the corner of her eyes. Choking them down, when she finally finished the pastel green girl was deep in the realm of sleep.

“That was beautiful…” The old man murmured, making Ayszel jolt upright, almost knocking her head on an outcropping of rocks, “A Falyndar Lullaby?”

“Yesss…” She replied quickly, carefully slithering over to the older man so as not to wake the others.

“Would you mind if I wrote it down? We Charoda love poetry.” He explained. Ayszel smiled, flattered and nodded.

“Sure, I’ll sing it for you again. But only if you let me look at your booksss first. You don’t have to take an unfair price, but I want a fair change at buying them.” She explained, “The Priestesses always get first choosssing.” A faint whine entering her voice.

“Deal.” He eventually agreed after several chimes of thought. And so Ayszel sang him the poem once again, but this time she sang the whole version that hadn’t been necessary for the drunken young woman.

“Hussssh little ssssnakeling, Don’t you weepsss….
Mamassss gonna ssssing you a sweet lullaby….
“Ssssleeep little ssssnakeling
Don’t hisss a word….
Mamasss gonna get you a ssssalamander corpssse.
And if that Sssalamander gone and diesssss,
Mamassss going to bake you
Sssssweet chocolatessss piessss,
And if those chocolate pieessss
Turn into a bassss,
Mamassss gonna make you
A gypsum glasssss….
If that gypssssum
Beginsssss to cccloud,
Mamasss gonna buy you a Damassssk Ssssshroud.
If that Sssshroud is sssshred
Mamassss gonnna tell you…
Go to bed.”

She sang it slowly, at a slower cadence than usual, allowing him a chance to write it down. Her voice was sweet and whispery, by no means talented or skilled, but the sweet quiet voice of a child. For the first time, the mans eyes widened and knowing entered them. It began to dawn on him how truly young the seemingly adult woman was in so many ways.

“Let us sing it together?” He asked quietly, and she nodded instantly having heard all about their voices, “or perhaps you would like to hear how we truly sound in our own home?” He asked offering a hand. Taking the rubbery palm that brought shudders to her spine he led her to the small watery stream that steamed as it ran.

“Put your head in.”

“What?!” She checked her voice at the last minute and both looked at the group of sleeping Charoda, releasing a sigh of relief when none of them stirred.

Nodding Ayszel followed his direction, laying on her back on the edge of the bank she submerged her ears and gazed up at the ceiling breathing as quietly as possible. His voice began as a chime, high and twinkly. Slowly the familiar words filled her ears and she closed her eyes.

Never had she heard a voice so hauntingly beautiful. Halfway through the familiar words she pulled herself from the water and they sat cross legged slowly and quietly singing together. His voice was not even a faint shadow of what she had heard beneath the waves but she couldn’t lay listening to the song without wanting to sing it herself.

“Alright. You wanted to see the books?” He asked, rising and stretching stiff legs. He moved toward a heavy locked chest and slowly opened it pulling tombs from its depths. The books were thin and well worn, obviously largely journals. However, Ayszel had no concept of purely academic texts, journals and almanacs were all she knew.

“You may look.” He explained sternly, “But be very careful, many of them are very fragile.” He emphasized. Ayszel nodded, not tearing her eyes from their pages.

The first book she picked up was a well worn copy of “Just Stay Home:
A Travel Journal” Flipping through the pages slowly but carefully she was awestruck by the vastness of the world. She had never known there to be more than what was beyond Falyndar. Excerpts she read left her stifling laughter. The book was written on the same thick paper that the painting she had in hand.

“What is this paper?” She asked running her fingers along the slightly exposed weaves.

“It’s made only on Black Rock, from Aenbult Reeds, they have a gum that allows us to weave them together into paper. “

“Oh. It’s beautiful.” She replied, having never seen paper like it before, “Can I purchase the books now…before they reach the hands of the Priestesses?” The man paused for a second mulling it over.

“That depends..,.we want to be known for what we bring, if we sell it to you we’ll loose our reputation. That’s much more difficult to buy back than the money you give us for the books. Say what, you can buy any book there right now that we’ve brought before, common books aye?”

Ayszel grinned and nodded dramatically, setting aside the Traveling book; a pile of wants that would no likely increase dramatically in size. Each one brought was written Common, Likely because they didn’t think it worth bringing books in a language most of us couldn’t possibly have been exposed to she realized, once she realized the breadth of the places in Mizahar.

The next book was a book on magic, an Autobiography titeled “Magic and I”. The narrator was equally humorous though several of the passages she flipped through filled her with a sense of fear and dread with only a few sentences. She quickly put it aside, on top of the travelling book.

The following were of little interest to her and she quickly moved through them after a quick browse. However the next she pulled from the pile was a thin green journal, hardly 50 pages. It was written in a hard thick font, in an ink that was very obviously made from the leaves of a plant. Flipping through the pages Ayszel smiled to herself. It was written by a young woman of the Jamoura race. Jamoura? and held a variety of indecipherable sketches where time had rubbed away the ink. However, it was a delightful little book filled with little three line poems. Placing the book in the ‘no’ pile was difficult but Ayszel knew she couldn’t waste her money on poetry.

The next was thicker journal. The thick leather cover was embossed with a flexing arm. “Strength” She murmured, running her fingers along the dips and grooves. Opening it slowly she inhaled the thick dust and shivered as the pages creaked beneath her fingers. It was a thick book, with extensive maps of caves Ayszel had never (and likely would never) see.

In tiny scratchy writing was scrawled almost indecipherable, for so heavy was the technical jargon, details about cave architecture, geology, and the like. Ayszel grinned, THIS was the book she neeed. Written in a broader swirl on the front page was the name of the author.

Mandos Scandricor Pitrius

“Alright, I have chosen three,” She handed the three books to the Charoda. He handed back the first two, “You can buy the other tomorrow. If you get there first.” He added playfully. She frowned slowly thinking over the process carefully.

“How much for the two?”

“50 Miza for both.”

“Oh no….10.”

“…fine…40.”

“20 and not a silver miza more.”

“Well you are going to have to pay a lot more than 20 if you want them.” He replied and Ayszel was grateful he was not offended by the bartering.

“25?” She asked.

“40 and not a silver miza less.” He replied winking.

“Fine, but only if you give me the other book for 50 as well.” He was already shaking his head even as she began the sentence. “You can buy it for 50 tomorrow. I want to make sure others see it as well.”

“100.” She replied in a low voice. He wavered then glancing between her and the book. Finally he slowly nodded “you drive a hard bargain dear.”

“I don’t carry that much Miza on me at once, so you’ll have to excuse me while I run and grab it?” She asked, hoping it wouldn’t give him enough time to turn it down. Thankfully, he acquiesced and few chimes later she was slithering back into his cave with 140 Miza.

As he piled them into her arms he placed another small thin rosy pink book ontop. “I didn’t buy that.” Ayszel replied, too tired by now to hold her tongue or phrase it more politely.

“No you didn’t. It was the Konti Childs Journal Lacey read on the way here. It wouldn’t be worth much to the Dhani, there is nothing of much use in there but it has some beautiful lullabies.”

They smiled softly at each other as Ayszel tightened her arms around her precious load and slowly slithered out.

“Don’t you dare not show up tomorrow. I want to see you in the crowd regardless of this deal.” He winked one last time as Ayszel nodded, rounding the bend, and hurrying off to sleep.

Cavern Anatomy 100 GM Written by Mandos Scandricor Pitrius, an Isur long since dead. Bound with thick leather bound wood and an embossed Isurian Arm pressed into the leather the pages are tinted a light grey. Inside is documentation of his training and many of the tools used by the Isur to create the caverns through the Kalea mountains. Though none of the maps depicted are the secret passage ways created by the people there are maps of various caverns in Kalea annotated by his own Cartographical learnings. There are some depictions of Isurian culture but the majority of the journal is focused on the geology and cartography of the area.
