[Rearing Stallion] Imitating a species...

Summer 29th, AV 15, Early Evening

The heavy scent of smoke and alcohol washed over her like a tidal wave as soon as the heavy wooden doors came to a close behind. Her extra sensitive tongue could literally taste the sour sweat hanging in the air. Her eyes surveyed the dank, dim lit tavern as she took her first few steps. A haven for ruffians and misfits alike. Perfect. She felt eyes upon her as she traversed the wooden flooring, inevitable, she assumed. Skae was a fair bit taller than most of the females here, even some of the males, she had noticed. Not to mention a good deal stockier to.

She found the closest table and plunked herself down on to a worn looking bench, a crack running through it's middle. She took quick, discreet glances at the creatures around her. Humans, people, they referred themselves as. The vast knowledge she had consumed about these mammals prior to arriving in Syliras was enough to get her through the gates but she doubted it would get her much further than that. No. If she was going stay here for any length of time she needed to act like them, speak like them, BE them.

Her eyes skirted from person to person, cautiously observant. Her gaze rested upon a well fed man, repeatedly slapping his thigh with a heavy hand. A strange sound emanating from deep within his throat whilst his body convulsed, almost violently. A short man with a balding head sat opposite, said something in a light tone that she couldn't quite make out, then they both hurled back in their seats and began bellowing the same strange noise, their bodies shaking, like some sort of bizarre ritual. What odd gestures these creatures use...

She lowered her gaze to the table. A large heap of something lay on a metal dish. Food, she assumed, if it could really be called that. Food. The one thing she doubted she could ever get used to here. Skae was hungry of course, famished in fact, she hadn’t had a decent meal in at least a week. Right around the time before she had entered the gates. To have what you desired delivered to you, sliced, diced and crushed in such a way it was beyond recognition was just unfathomable to her. The thrill of the hunt had more or less been removed completely. She had tried to imitate the unfamiliar chewing motions humans and other similar mammals used whilst eating but for some reason it gave her terrible indigestion.

She had also attempted eating normally in this form. On her second day of staying in Syliras she had come across a large rat scurrying through an alley. She was a lot slower in this form but her reactions were fast as always. She had snatched up the rat and snapped it’s little neck before it had time to react. When she had felt certain no eyes were on her she shoved the whole thing into her mouth and swallowed. She had not accounted for the fact her human gullet could not expand and contract like it normally did and she nearly choked to death there and then in that alley. She had taken note of a few possible hunting grounds outside of the walls however she would need to be cautious. A snake prowling in the nearby woods, especially one of her size would quickly attract attention.

“May I help?”

Skae looked up, startled. She was deep in thought and had let her guard down. A female was standing above her, a wooden platter with mugs piled upon lay in her hands. Skae’s eyes narrowed as she assessed the situation. The barmaid placed a hand on her hip patiently and frowned worryingly. “I’ll have whatever they are drinking…” The dhani replied, her head motioning toward the two males she observed previously. The barmaid nodded, eager to be free of the snake’s piercing gaze. Skae wondered what she was even doing here, she supposed she had to start somewhere.

The Rearing Stallion was a place for people to unwind, relax and drown their mind with the intoxication beverages that this taverns offers. Ren had just finished working at the flower stand. He felt hit belly demanding something delicious to devour. Ren pushed the doors open of the tavern and was greeted with an intoxicating smell. Ren walked over to the bar and asked the barmaid if he could have a meal and a mug of ale; he paid the amount and sat at the bar as he waited. Ren gulped down the bitter yellowish liquid from the mug, heaving out a heavy breathy of relief. Soon Ren finished his mug of ale and asked for another.

As chimes passed, the tavern grew livelier. More people came to tavern to drink, eat and generally have a good. Most of the people who entered the tavern Ren had seen a couple of times around the city; he greeted some of them with a smile. However, there was one individually who was quite unfamiliar. It was a tall woman. From the bar, Ren’s eyes tracked the woman. From the way she looked around the place, Ren could gather that she wasn’t a regular patron. He watched as she walked up to one of the barmaids. Cocking his head askew, he wondered what she was doing; the woman stood in front of the barmaid, staring at her for what seemed to be an uncomfortable length of time. The situation was quite interesting to watch. Observing the woman more closely, he motived that she outlandish marking on her face. “Is she from some tribe?” Ren thought to himself.

Rather than being a stalker watching over the woman, Ren would just talk to her. Chugging down more of his ale, Ren stood up and made his way to the woman. He greeted woman with his signature smile. “Hey there!” he said cheerfully, slightly affected but the ale, “You’re not from around here are you.” Ren hoped that she understood what he was saying, as he did think she was from a tribe. Standing closer to the woman, Ren could see her a lot clearly. The one thing he notice more that the markings is her eyes. They looked like a predator staring prey, cold and observant. Needless to say, it unnerved Ren a little. “Uh… the name’s Ren, Nice to meet you…” He said, trying to keep his composure.

“Hey there!”

Skae peered up from her thoughts, interrupted once more. A young male loomed over her, alcohol on his breath. Her eyes ran the length of his body, coldly calculating as always. Nothing really suspicious of note, she deemed, other than his abundance of clothing. It was the middle of summer, however, she could sympathize. Skae was used to much warmer weather. His rhetorical question took her by surprise, she took pains in not showing it. Was it that obvious? She felt a tingle of panic creep through her but quickly dismissed it. Calm yourself, he was only stating that you’re not from around here…

Skae could visibly see something was unnerving the human, even tasted a little fear. She eased up, slumped her shoulders, threw one leg over the other and forced a pleasant, slightly seductive smile. It reminded her of the days when she and her sisters used to openly hunt humans in Falyndar. She swallowed the thought. That was a long time a go, no use reliving the past, that was her motto. “Pleassse take a sseat…” She replied as charmingly as she could.

The follow up introduction was another blindsider. How readily these creatures give up their identity… By then the barmaid had returned with her drink. She placed it on the splintered table with a heavy thunk. “That’ll be one silver miza, please!” She seemed to ask almost reluctantly. Skae pulled a silver miza from a pouch and placed it in the maid’s hand. She took no time at all in scurrying off to another table. Skae was parched, she decided to drink before making her reply so she picked up the big mug and thrust it to her lips. It tasted foul but she was thirsty so she downed it in no more than three gulps. She placed the mug down on the table perhaps a little harder than she intended, cracking the wood ever so slightly. She belched loudly, something she hadn’t been expecting. Foul drink…

She turned her focus to the young man, the seductive smile returning to her lips. “Ssskae… you can call me Sskae and no… I am not from around here.” She saw no harm in a little sprinkled truth. “...and where are you from?”

Soon after Ren introduced himself to the woman, he could see that her eyes were gazing over him; he wasn’t too sure what to think. Was she checking to see if he was worthy to chat with? Was he a threat? The answer came to him as he was responded with a faint yet visible smile. Thunk! A mug of ale was placed before the woman. She paid the barmaid and grabbed mug, making her way to a vacant table. Ren followed the woman, still waiting for his meal. He took a few more sips from his mug of ale, so did the woman. However, Ren briefly choked on his drink after he witnessed an amusing reaction to ale. Ren coughed, trying to conceal his laughter and cause he was choking. “The taste will grow on you, I assure you.” Ren remarked.

The woman introduced herself as Skae and stated that she wasn’t a local, as if she thought Ren was going to ask… which he was. Skae seemed to speak with a serpent like hiss, something that Ren never hears too often. He paid her hiss no mind as he didn’t want to be rude. Living in Syliras for quite some time, Ren could easily tell that Skae wasn’t a Syliran. Sipping his mug of ale, Ren continued to smile and talk with Skae. “Where did you come from?” Skae asked.
“I live around here.” Ren replied, “How about you? You look like you have a story to tell.”

After a small conversation, Ren’s food arrived. It seemed today’s meal consisted of bread and soup. The soup looked quite appetising; cut and diced vegetables strewn about with bits of meat resting on the bottom of the bowl. The aroma the soup had made Ren salivate a little. He had missed lunch today so he was quite hungry. Ren excused himself for a moment ad he broke a bit of bread to eat.
“Here…” Ren said with a bit of bread in his mouth, holding out a part of the loaf of bread. “Want some?”
Ren ate a bit of his meal, feeling somewhat worried that he was being rude. However, the soup with delicious!

“How about you? You look like you have a story to tell.”

Inquisitive little thing this… Ren… There was no harm in telling a little truth she supposed. “I am from the junglesss of Falyndar… a truly beautiful place. Lush green asss far asss the eye can sssee....” She paused hesitantly. “I am from a clan of Myriansss… ever heard of them?” She scoffed inside at the irony. Myrians were her kins worst enemy, also their favourite snack. How ironic that she should wear their identity now as a mantle.

A bowl of… something arrived at their table. It looked more like something you would heal an open wound with rather than actually eat, Ren appeared indifferent as he shoved spoonfuls of the stuff into his mouth. She felt out of place with nothing so she ordered another one of those awful drinks as the maid was turning to leave.

“Here…”

Skae gazed at the stick of… whatever it was with disgust. Ren himself looked a lot more appetizing than whatever he was handing her over the table. She thought it best to keep that remark to herself however. “No, thank you, I’m not hungry…” She lied. In reality Skae was always hungry, there was never really full just… less hungry.

There was a moment of awkward silence between them. Ren seemed to be finishing up the remains of his dinner, seemingly eager to hear more. “I grew weary of my home… I thought it might be time to get out and explore… sssee the vassst cccity life and all the knowledge it hasss to offer!” It was far from the truth of course but Ren needn’t know that. “Many placcesss I have ssseen on my travelss, yesss many placccesss…” She paused, recollecting her thoughts “From the vassst mountainss of Kalea to the cold… inhosspitable landsss of Taldera…” Taldera… I almost died in that godforsaken wasteland… She thought bitterly to herself. Skae abolished the memory, there was no use in reliving the past.

She peered up from her thoughts at Ren’s expectant, glowing face. “Are you a traveler Ren? What isss it that you do in this cccity?”

[Rearing Stallion] Imitating a species...

As Syna's gleam began to look as though it were beginning to fade, the young Svefra new to the streets of Syliras, paused where he stood on the corner of a cobbled walkway. Placing one hand on his hip, he used his other hand to shield his bright sapphire eyes as he peered up into the evening sky. Yep, he was definitely lost. An exasperated sigh escaped through his cracked lips as he shook his head. He was never fond of large cities, but alas one needed to work to earn coin to live around these parts - bartering was not as common here as it was among his kin - and there was no place better to find work than in a city with thousands of people. Still, it didn't make him like the paved streets of Syliras any better.
Spending his life out upon the Suvan, yet now coming to land the young Svefra found the stable and unmoving soil beneath his sea-legs to be strange. His head spun a little as having only docked in the city two days ago, he found his body was still adjusting to life on solid ground. Deciding that it would be better to find an inn or tavern in which he could ask for direction, the young male rounded the corner of the street and came to face a swinging red and white sign. The sign had etched upon it a rearing stallion with the word 'Tavern' depicted in common beneath it.
Perfect! He could quench his parched tongue with a cooling mug of ale before quizzing the locals on the way back to the docks. With his new purchases burrowed in his old, frayed backpack which was strewn over one shoulder and the prospect of ale, the young Svefra could wave off getting lost as a bad omen for the city and instead count it as a productive first day out exploring his new home.
Without hesitation the young Svefra left the failing light of Syna and entered into the dim lantern lighting of the popular Tavern. Closing the old oaken door behind him, Kai was faced with an open room cluttered with simple wooden furnishings. Patrons of every kind were dotted around the main hall, as the sweet smell of cooking food and fresh alcohol mixed with the stifling scent of putrid sweat filled the nostrils of the young seaman.
Standing just an inch above six foot; sun-kissed skin, curly, coarse chocolate short cropped locks and subtly cut muscles, the young male could clearly be defined as a native Svefra from the Suvan Sea. Bright sapphire eyes set upon weathered, rugged features, scanned the quiet scene around him, a broad friendly smile curving the sides of his salty-chapped lips.
Instantly the young man's intense gaze fell upon the exotic beauty sat at a table conversing with another young male, whose back was to the Svefra. Their table situated just to the left of the door, she was truly distinguishable from the many native Sylirians dotted about the tavern, with those tribal markings illuminating her face in a subtle red. Having not made any friends as of yet, Kai was glad to see a tribal face among the city dwellers. A little reminder of home - the Southern Suvan Sea whose waters follow the coast of many Myrian trading outposts.
With zeal the young Svefra plodded on up to the bar, its aged wooden surface stretching the entire length of the room. Catching the eye of the young barmaid drying several tankards and mugs with an old wash rag, the young Svefra beckoned her over to place his order of three mugs of ale and a warm meal. Slipping 9 silver mizas into the young lady's palm with a flirtatious wink, the young male nodded to the table of the tribal woman and her companion. With a nod of understanding the young barmaid turned to the work of making up the Svefra's order.
Shuffling the worn strap of his backpack more comfortably upon his shoulder, the young male made his way over to the table with a confident grin across rugged features. Pausing at the table the young male glanced at both the tribal beauty and young male adjacent to her apologetically as he raised a hand in greeting. "Hello. May I disturb you and please sit?" Speaking in the common tongue, his sentences may sometimes come broken, hesitant as his mind reaches for the appropriate words. Gesturing with a thumb over his shoulder he beamed warmheartedly, "I have drinks, to come. For you two."

Ren continued eating the meal before him, pausing every now and then to listen to Skae. “So you’re from the Falynder; Sounds like a nice area.” Ren said as he swallowed a bit of bread. Not well educated of Mizhar’s geography, this was the first time he had heard of Falynder’s existence. He briefly wondered what other places were out there; the only place that he knew beyond the city’s walls was the dreaded city, Sunberth. There was an uncomfortable period of silence between the two. Ren was finishing his meal as quick as he could, and Skae was waiting for him to finish. Washing down the last bits of his bread with a gulp of ale, Ren turned Skae to hear more about her adventures outside the walls of the city.

“That’s a lot of traveling.” Ren commented. There were so many places mentioned that Ren couldn’t memorized them all. Ren considered traveling to these places as they did sound interesting. However, Ren knew quite well about the harsh lands of the wilderness. Ren continued to ponder about life outside the city until his thoughts were halted by Skae’s questions. Skae first asked if Ren was in a similar position as herself, a traveller. Ren smiled and shook his hand gesturing that he wasn’t. “Nay, I live here.” Ren said, “But I guess in the past you could consider me a traveller… So, I guess I’m an ex-traveller!”
Ren gave a small chuckle and drank more ale. Ren peered down the mug and noticed that he needed a refill. Skae’s second question was asked, this time she was asking what was Ren’s purpose in the city. The answer was simple enough. “I’m a florist.” Ren said bluntly, “I work at a stand within the city. You should stop by sometime.”

Ren’s mug grew lighter and was about time he got up to fill it back up. Just as he was about to stand, a tall rugged man stood before the table. The man looked quite tanned, much darker when compared to Ren’s light skin. He was built quite solidly with hands matching his sturdiness. Ren could smell a very faint trace of salt; he wasn’t too sure whether it was his food or something else. The man looked at Skae and Ren. Ren was unsure how to react; did this man want something? To Ren’s surprise, the short moment of silence was broken when the man raised his hand to apologise and greet both Ren and Skae. The man wanted to join the table. The man words were spoken in a way that made Ren assume that common tongue wasn’t his first language.
“Sure. More the merrier!” Ren laughed, “I’ll be a moment, need to grab another drink.”
Ren was about to walk to the bar, but was halted by the man.
“I have drinks, to come. For you two.” The man said.
Ren was then certain that common tongue wasn’t his first language.
“Uh… thanks, stranger!” Ren said, gesturing to the table as if he was welcoming the man to a house.
“He seems kind” Ren thought as he sat down.

[Rearing Stallion] Imitating a species...

Postby Verinskae on July 14th, 2015, 1:06 pm

So Ren was living here, a florist at that. The first thing that came to mind was poison. She knew some of her brothers and sisters were very fond of poisons. Especially the paralyzing kind. Her kin, the children of Siku as they so loved to proclaim themselves would often trade with the Iyvess of the Suvan seas for their paralytic venoms. The memories were fresh in her mind, why one would play with and torture their prey for nothing other than pleasure was beyond her, a follower of Siku or not. The thought disgusted her.

"Hello. May I disturb you and please sit?"

People here seemed to be making a habit of abruptly interrupting her thought process. Skae glanced over to her right. Another male stood directly in front of them. She allowed her eyes to follow the length of his body. Observantly searching for any weaknesses, coldly calculating her chances of survival if worst came to worst, which from past experience it usually had.

The human appeared roughly the same height as herself, perhaps even a little taller. He was heavily built, yet looked like he could move quickly if pressured. This one looks dangerous, I'll have to keep my eye on him... She thought cooly to herself. Not to take Ren entirely off the threat list, of course. If she had learned anything in her one hundred and forty years it was that looks could most definitely be deceiving.

In her experience she knew humans were relatively weak. They were mostly all show and talk. Fragile creatures that were easily succumbed to panic and fear. It was in numbers they were truly dangerous. Skae had found that out the hard way. The dhani took a deep breath as her assessing calculations subsided. She perceived the male at a different angle this time round. Tanned skin, short curly hair, chiseled, stern facial features, young, but weathered. She licked her lips instinctively. He tasted of the sea. Skae found him strangely attractive in a rare, exotic creature sort of way.

“He seems kind”

Skae cocked her head to one side at Ren’s reaction. How easily these creatures trust one another… She mused. She supposed it was her turn to talk. “Thank you, ssstranger. Though I musst sssay, I do find the drink here quite.... unpleasssant…” The Dhani replied, a playful smirk forming on the corner of her lips. She wondered how she had attracted so much attention to herself. What was supposed to be a subtle surveillance of the human social ethics had quickly turned into an odd gathering of misfits. Perhaps this was normal human behaviour. She would need to be twice as cautious with two pairs of eyes on her.

The drinks arrived as soon as the young man seated himself at their table. She clasped the ale with one hand, taking it a little slower this time, slurping up the orangey-brown liquid. Ren had been right, it was certainly a great deal tolerable the second time round. Her eyes darted from the male, to Ren and back again in quick succession, the mug of ale hiding the lower part of her features. She decided to use Ren’s former line as an opening. “You’re not from around here… are you?”

A large merry grin stretched across the rugged seaman's lips, reaching those intense sapphire eyes of his as he was welcomed to take a seat at the pair's table. "Thank you much." Letting his backpack fall carefully to the floor beneath the aged table, the young Svefra pulled over an empty old wooden chair with an uneven length of legs. Just as he placed his rump upon its smoothly worn surface and shuffled it closer, the lady from the bar balancing three mugs of ale upon her tray in one hand arrived. With a flirtatious wink in thanks, the young Svefra's gaze fell upon the tribal woman to his left as she addressed the lack in quality of the drink served at the Rearing Stallion.
A light hearted chuckle escaped the young seaman as he cupped a hand around the cool mug set down before him, "I no knowledge. This is first since landing." The young male's gaze as deep as the oceans themselves settled upon the exotic woman's features as he watched out for signs of extreme grimacing to determine just how bad she found the ale here, before finally risking his first sip himself. Taking a small mouthful of the bitter substance and smacking his lips slightly as he took a moment to consider the taste upon his buds. A soft laugh lilted from deep within his chest as he shook his head, "Yes, this not all good. Svefran ale much better" He added in good humour.
As silence befell the group while Skae's observant gaze flitted from one male to the other, Kai simply sipped at his mug, the ale a refreshing buzz to the tastebuds after a long day traversing the streets of Syliras...completely lost. He could feel the tensions and uncertainties that naturally occurs between strangers being cautious of one another. So the other guy sat to his right was also an acquaintance of the tribal. The young Svefra was about to enquire as to the names of the others, when it was Skae that broke the momentary silence first. Smiling warm heartedly, Kai shook his head as he rested his forearms upon the table, both hands cupping his drink, "That obvious huh? No I am from the Suvan. South. Born and live. At least I think I am." He chuckled, leaning backwards into the cracked backboard of his chair, running the fingers of one hand through his coarse, curly locks. His voice deep, rough, his bright sapphire gaze flicking from Skae to Ren, his question directed for them both. "My name is Kai of the Tidalwaves. What is yours?"
Just as he asked his question the barmaid returned with a hot steaming bowl and a crust of bread, accompanied with a single spoon. "Thank you much!" He beamed at the girl as he accepted his bowl eagerly, who giggled in response and gently, kindly corrected the young seaman's disjointed Common, "Thank you very much" Giving him a compassionate smile before scurrying away back to work. As the barmaid left the young Svefra's brow bunched as he recited the words 'very much' over and over in his mind so that he would remember for future.
Lifting his spoon he was about to dig in before he quickly halted himself, peering up at his present company, "You allow?"

[Rearing Stallion] Imitating a species...

I promise I'm not that scary..

It had felt like forever since Bakar got out. He rose from the chair, from which he had simply been staring at the wall in, and stretched his long dead joints. Too long had it been since he had a conversation, with someone other than himself that is.

"Huh. Did you really just say that? Yeah.. yeah I did. Guess interaction isn't all that bad then, if you're wanting for it now." He opened his door, and left, heading towards the local tavern. Herald's Arms was getting a little stale for him, so he decided to head for the other, less familiar one. What was it called? He couldn't remember. He knew where it was, from his wanderings, years before.

He headed there, and saw the sign. The Rearing Stallion. "Ah, of course.. how could I forget." He opened the old doors, and headed in. The place was loud and smelled of sweat and ale. He sighed at the old smells and found his way to an unused seat in the back.

Most looked like regulars here, familiar with others and laughing. His eyes passed over these ones, they were boring, regular people. He wanted excitement. Someone interesting. His people-watching skills came into effect here, as he noticed a trio of customers grouped at a table near the center. A tall women with tattoos along her face, an equally tall, burly man, and a smaller man, who didn't look like he belonged. He couldn't quite hear what they were saying, but the small snippets he heard revealed that they were all meeting for the first time.

"Should you go over there? I mean, they're all meeting.. maybe you could easily join... I dunno. All the people I've met usually come to me..." He spoke to himself quietly, but not used to hiding it. He shuddered and slowly stood, making his way to the trio, making a stop and the table beside them, sitting across from a large, portly man. Red faced and drinking. He smiled and motioned to Bakar, inviting him to play some kind of card game. Bakar shook his head and turned for his ears to point towards the three beside him, listening to their conversation, before deciding when a good time to join in would be.
As of Summer, 63, 515, Bakar has a different body! If never met you before, then this doesn't really matter to you, but people I've met should take this into account, as you're really unlikely to recognize me. :P
