70 Fall 515

"I'm probably going to have to find a new place to live if this doesn't work" Cayn says depositing a letter at the fire-haired girl's tent-flap. He had been watching her for about 6 days now, living off the dried meats that he had in his pack.

He had spotted her foraging one day, and saw the dark bags under her eyes that anyone could notice, she was obviously stressed, likely because of the fact she lives alone, shunned by her family. Cayn had found this out by listening intently to different conversations, noticing her lack of a tent-mate by watching. He wasn't sure what it was about her that drew him in, likely the fact that she also knows what it's like to be alone in the world.

The letter was a last ditch effort to find somewhere to live, and that's exactly what it was, last ditch. Cayn was running low on food and didn't want to leave to hunt for fear of the town leaving.

Cayn picks up the letter to read it one last time to check for errors, and it reads:

To the Fire haired woman in this Pavillion,
Hello, I am Cayn. I have been watching you for sometime, so I'll just go ahead and cut to the chase.
I propose that we become partners. I am a Physically mature wolf Kelvic, And I am good at Hunting, Wilderness survival, and animal husbandry. In exchange for letting me live in your tent, I am willing to: Bring you game, help you track Game, Help you care for/ train your animals, Protect you, and in general be good company.

All that I require is a place to sleep, which will not take much. I can sleep in my wolf form and curl up in a warm corner of your tent. I noticed that you are living alone and winter is drawing close, So I think this would be a good Experience for us both.

All you must do to reply to me is to speak to me as though I am right in front of you, I am not far away in wolf form and can hear you.

"Yes, this will do." Cayn replaces the letter and gives a brief yell of "Letter for you!". surely this will gain the woman's attention as it is after dark.

It didn’t help she hadn’t been sleeping well. It didn’t help that she was driving herself extra hard. She didn’t want to think on recent events. She didn’t want to cry anymore, yet at times those came. She shook her head as she heard the strange words. “Letter?”

That little face scrunched up as she opened the tent flap to where a letter was indeed right there. She stood five foot four and the cold breeze caught her hair making it dance as wildly as the harkening winds swirled around her, chilling her to the bone. Her eyes went over the words once quickly then she went over it a second time slowly. Common converted to her own language sometimes took a bit of adjustment. There were times there was nothing at all in Pavi.

She looked around as those sky blue eyes looked out. The letter said to just speak and he would hear her. A wolf? It could be problematic, It could be advantageous as that mind did the one thing she didn’t want to do lately. Think. The small long finger went under her nose to lighty rub the pert little edges as she thought. Maybe this was Caihya’s way of providing; maybe this was Rak’keli’s way to offer strength. It was hard to say with the Gods, but a companion to help with the winter was sounding better and better.

The darn dog of hers still was mangling kills and she hoped to have her on gazelle already but didn’t want to have the hide mangled. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly as she looked at the stark browns, golds and what green was clinging on in the expanse of grass.

“Alright, We can talk about these arrangements. Please join me in the warmth. “ The girl would say. It was not exactly the first time she had spoken to just the air. Every prayer and every hope she utters out in to the air to carry to the Gods was becoming more frequent.

She wondered briefly how he could possibly know about her predicament. Amunet then sharply reminded herself that everyone knew about it as loud as it was. She carried that mark in her heart heavily with a raised chin. The little woman would do it the same way again. It was the lesser of two evils that became her fate. She waited for the wolf to appear as her horse and donkeys would probably have a fit. While they had become accustom to her hunting cat, a wolf in the sea of grass was usually a death threat for sure.

“Approach carefully. Wolves are often Speared or shot full of arrows before they get too close.” The girl cautioned into the air towards the grass. She was well on the outskirts and likely not watched too closely by the Watch. That was something she would have to figure out or at least give word not to shoot this Kelvic.

When she spoke it was as though she was directly in front of her. Part of him, perhaps a small voice of reason, thought that she would likely sic her dog on me so she can pull a knife and kill me. Or worse, something to knock me out with so she can sell me.

My entire mind shudders at the idea of a cold, dark cage. unable to change into my other form. That is a completely different form of imprisonment. It'd be more of a torture than imprisonment.

But nevertheless He casts all of these feelings aside and started around the tent to see her, still something nagged his mind.

"Why do I trust her so much? Its like my mind has known her forever, but we havent even truly met in person, is this the fabled "bonding" that we kelvic are known for? It's all so sudden and powerful, i'm probably just thankful to her for inviting me in. but still, I should investigate this more thouroughly later."

Cayn turns the corner and sees her standing there, she turns her face toward him, her hair forming an almost backdrop for her stunning face, so tired yet so perfect. Cayn knew in that moment that he would never let harm befall her, even if he died in protecting her.

She apprehensively opens the tent flap for Cayn, and He saunters inside. upon entrance he morphs back into his human form, as casually as taking off his coat. he then casually walks across the room nude, and sits cross-legged in the middle of the floor. Cayn gestures to The young woman and insists that she sit in front of him in cross legged fashion.

The smoothness of how the Kelvic changed was like liquid. It was like a dance of swirling creation mass of primordial ooze that melded from wolf to human. She didn’t dare blink or she would miss it. Her mind surely not grasping but a fraction of it, yet she couldn’t take her eyes off of the change. The strong human young man before her nonchalantly sat down, crossed his legs and was as at peace with his natural human form as his animal form.

It wasn’t that she was adverse to naked. The naked form was natural to the Drykas; however, they did have a certain sense of propriety to things. The young lady did turn around politely out of respect for his state. She blushed as the blatant and stark form. “Do you have pants?” The girl’s silken voice asked softly before reaching for a bit of cheese and bread. For some reason her mind turned to a hearty stew. The purpose of caring and feeding for others was a strong urge. She put it off to this was the terms to the companionship in taking on a tent mate for practical purposes.

Her compassion spoke louder than her pragmatic side. Unfortuantely it was a more frequent occurrence then she wanted to admit. She would need him to find clothing though. “People talk. I am a single unmarried woman alone. An undressed man in the tent makes the gossip fly. People can be simple like that in their assumptions.” The girl turned those sky blue eyes around to look at the Kelvic’s eyes.

“I can make a stew if that is good for you. I don’t know what you eat?” Hopefully he wasn’t making eyes at her donkey or worse her strider. She shook her head and looked at his eyes again. No he wouldn’t do that. She wasn’t sure how but she knew he wouldn’t harm her or her animals. The Silkena wagged her tail and went over to Cayn.

“That is Camile. She is a bit vain for a dog, but is a fair sight hunter. If I can get her to not mangle her kills.” The girl sighed. She then hugged Leia, a six month old hunting cat. “This is Leia. She should be old enough to start simple training. “ She made the small talk just to clear the air and say something other than the awkward silence that surrounded his nakedness. She resorted to getting him a cloth hopefully large enough to cover his bottom, unmentionables. The poor little woman blushed again.

The woman was talking to him but he didn't notice much. Cayn was preoccupied looking at her in wonderment. He noticed her amazement at his transformation and couldn't help but feel pride in the fact that to her he was "fascinating" The woman breaks him from his trance by handing him a cloth.

" Oh! Right, sorry, clothes, just a moment." Cayn walks to a back corner of the tent, reaches underneath and pulls in a backpack. "You humans, I've never understood it. I can walk around naked as a wolf but the moment I transform to a human it's 'indecent' honestly, whats the big deal? Don't you have genitals as well?" He continues rambling while pulling on his Form-fitting leather shirt,

Amunet asks again "What do you eat?" "Honestly I prefer all meat, but if you were to make a stew I would still eat the other things in it. A bit of fiber never hurt anyone." He turns to play with the dog for a moment, before turning back, "With camile being a dog and not a close relative, I cant have a conversation with her, but she'll get the drift. I can train her."

Amunet and Cayn lock eyes, looking deep into each-others souls, like looking through a spyglass into the deepest part of their hearts. Cayn had never felt this way toward any other person, this must be bondmating, in that one moment Cayn knew that until death, Amunet would always be the highest on his list of priorities. He would starve to feed her, die to save her, sell himself so she can keep a roof over her head, there would be no boundaries as to what he would do for her, she could tell him to to cut off his right paw and he would do it.

"This is so intense, I've only just met her, I had never thought that bonding would be so raw and full of emotions. I feel her sadness, I feel that she is overwhelmed, I feel her wonderment at the bonding process. I can't exactly read her mind, but her emotions are so clear to me now" As the process seems to lose intensity, Cayn and Amunet embrace eachother in a friendly hug.

For the first time in a few days, hope was in her eyes. The loneliness eased. The sadness seem to part like the fog that curls in from the coast had been hit by sunshine. She wasn’t sure what to call this in the least bit but the connection was undeniable. The silence was palpable as the swirling edges of her consciousness of her emotions being understood was like a fresh breeze on a hot day.

It was good that he could eat what she could cook as it was limited to soups and stews. The girl was learning but it was limited. “That is good. “ She answered softly, simply and in a distracted way as she examined this new feeling of togetherness. It was like finding a lost family member. That was how she settled it.

Amunet closed her eyes and placed her hands in a reverent manner. “Thank you, Rak’keli, Caiyha, Zulrav.” It was a simple benediction to the gods for such a gift.

It was during that moment that she was caught up in a hug. His taller frame dwarfed hers by far as it startled her for a moment or two or three. Maybe four. The young woman took a deep breath in and exhaled. “This isn’t getting dinner done. “ Amunet swallowed hard as she smiled. The moisture in her eyes that she tried to wipe away, for once was not from sadness. Hope was a difficult commodity to acquire sometimes as the strength in hope was a special breed. Her heart grabbed onto that strength with all she could.

She brushed back the corner of her eyes and beckoned Cayn to sit down as she got her cooking pot to start cooking the said stew. She went to the outside fire pit she had to get it going. The girl was trying not to waste coal or the smaller fuel for the brazier on a cooking fire. “The quicker I can get this fire going the quicker I can make dinner. “

Once the cooking fire was going, the pot had a little oil placed at the bottom. If its one thing Mara had taught her about stew was that browning it with a little flour now, meant a thick tasty stew later. She cut up the meat in half inch pieces, about a pound worth. Into the hot oil it went as it sizzled and the air started to smell like cooking meat. She looked at it sizzle and waited a couple of ticks before moving it. Mara had said not to move it to much and let it brown on each side. The girl would watch it and move it ever five ticks or so till it was brown.

She tossed in a two spoonfulls of flour and a little salt. This she stirred so the oil and flour would mix and start to brown the flour. Mara said cooking the flour taste makes for a good stew. No one liked a flour tasting stew. It needed to be the color of light leather. Amunet watched the browning process and stirred every tick or two till it was the color it should be. She poured water up to about half way up the pot and stirred it well. The pot was placed to get up to a boil which left her time to cut vegetables up.

Once the root vegetables were cut up these were tossed into the water and meat mixture. Now its just a matter of a wait time. Once that was set to simmer for a while she beckoned the kelvic to sit by the outside cooking fire. This whole feeling thing was curious. She didn’t reject it but she didn’t fully understand it either.

“What was that. I am trying to put it into words but I lack grace.” Her common was good but it was broken at times. “This feeling. It is new.” One look In her sky blue eyes would speak of the unsullied blanket of snow that held her virtue. “I am not sure I ask correctly.” The girl admitted as what she sought was to understand this condition. In between answers and talking, Amunet would stir the stew occasionally.
