67th Summer 516

The day had started like any other. Alija had woken with the sun, and lay in bed for a few precious chimes, enjoying the warm fabric and the rays of light that fell on her. Then she rose, donning her work clothing: the dirty shirt with coal dust from the day before still on it; the leather apron that would protect her from the worse of the sparks; boots to soften the blow of any fallen metal. She tied her hair back too - it was getting long and unruly, and in her way all of the time.

Breakfast was a simple affair, but she made sure she didn’t miss it, because blacksmithing on an empty stomach could be painful. She needed all the energy she could muster. On that morning, it was the bread they had the night before, with some leftover cheese. The bread was stale, and the cheese not much better, but she had two pieces of both, drowned with a good glass of milk.

Then she moved downstairs, ready to start the day. The door to the shop was unlocked first, to allow Ciara and Smaug entrance as soon as they arrived. Then the door to the forge and the store room, as she began to relight the fire.

What heat remained from the night before was blown at with the pumps, and when the fire had sprung up, full of energy, she added more coal, slowly teasing it until the fire grew to the right size. More than the right size - because once it was beyond that, she could simply let it die down again, to the required heat.

By this point, her workers had arrived, and the day had truly begun. She set Smaug off on some menial tasks, fixing dents in items that had been brought in yesterday, as she sorted through the list of orders, trying to pick out where to start. Several, that were required by the end of the season, if not later, she left off, knowing they would be quick work to be done when there were less urgent tasks. Alija was always grateful for the long deadlines some people had, although she never quite understood them. If they wanted something, why not for as soon as possible?

There were a few glaring tasks that needed to be done, that were needed as soon as possible, and they were more interesting to sort through. Mentally, she divided them into two groups: things she would prefer to do herself, and things she was happy with letting Smaug work on. The latter group was much smaller than the former, although she knew that in the end, they would have to even out. Still, she preferred to have the difficult tasks, that he couldn’t do. And the more important, high profile jobs rather than simple pans, so it would be her quality of work that was important. And anything that was worth a lot of money - if a customer was already paying a high price, she was going to give them the best they could offer.

From her list, she sorted them in order of when they were ordered, and how long they would take her to achieve, roughly. No point starting the longest task and make anyone else wait too long for their order.

There was one glaring item that she knew she had to do. Only, it was the one she wasn’t the happiest about.
