Sunberth Summer 7th 516 Av

If there's a difference between friends and family, it's choice. one can care about either side just as much as the either and when you lack one the other can take their place entirely. As such one's friends become their family. If you lack both, well you do the best you can. Cha didn't know too much about compassion anymore, a family that had once existed was now no more than ash and cinder. But Cha did have a home that she shared with others like her, others who had lost families, and while the term friend didn't necessarily come to mind with thoughts of them, their was some sort of loyalty and kinship to be had. With that loyalty and Kinship came a desire to keep it, any relationship with other humans that didn't leave you feeling alone was better than the solitude that comes just after losing everything.

So when a threat came to the sunset Quarter, Cha took it upon herself to see to it than none of those that belonged to her broken family would be harmed by it. The threat came in the form of a thug from one of the gangs, peddling drugs to those who lived in the area, which perhaps while not unusual in sunberth was unwelcome, in the local territory. With drugs came those who would partake of them and allowing scum like that to creep closer and closer to the orphanage was simply unthinkable. The dealer from what Cha had hear of from the other children talking about wasn't a particularly special looking fellow, ugly and tattooed the man had greasy dreads and and was constantly on the lookout for potential customers, it was said that he was also particularly forceful in his methods for selling his goods approaching those that tried to avoid him and all but threatening those who weren't interested.

Taking it upon herself to investigate Cha set out for the area of the sunset quarter that the man had taken to prowling. it took some work circling through the various byways and alleys and the thick muck that the roads had degraded too didn't help much, but after a few chimes of searching Cha came to see the man that the rumors had spoken of, stocky and dirty the man prowled near the entrance of an alley attempting to peddle his wares to anyone unfortunate enough, or in some case fortunate enough to pass by him. But what could Cha do about him? She had the handaxe with her like she always did, but she'd not really had occasion to use it on another human before. Once on a dog, and several times on firewood but actually fighting a human wasn't a particularly pleasant thought.

Circling back Cha took a wide berth to the man as she came to the other end of the alley that he hawked drugs from, perhaps if she could make him feel unwelcome he'd leave. With that in mind Cha used a tactic not to uncommon of the orphans of sunberth, lifting a stone Cha hid within the alley and Hurled the stone at where the man stood. the stone arced well but ultimately missed the man by a fair bit only causing him to look around for a moment before going back to his peddling. Waiting a moment cha repositioned herself a little bit, focusing on not being seen, breathing slowly through her nose and keeping her knees bent Cha focused on staying low and not being seen. Sticking to what shadows the alley offered Cha dung another stone out of the mud and hefted it, it was a little lighter than the last and with hope would reach the man. As fate would have it the second stone cast found it's mark glancing off the man's shoulder. If Cha had been any smarter she would have already made herself scarce by the time the stone was in the air, as it was she had watched the stone make it's mark. This also meant that Cha got a chance to look the man dead in the eye when he turned around furiously.

As the man came running at her already spewing a torrent of obscenities Cha turned herself about and was immediately fleeing the scene. Hoping to outpace the man cursing herself for being so stupid. Through two or three alleys Cha ran the man slowly gaining on her, his longer legs going far to aid his pursuit. As Cha rounded a corner an idea struck her, the man would be on her at this rate so she had to do something other than run, her lungs were already beginning to tell her that her current technique was not going to work. Then her eyes fell to the small ax that laid at her waist. Pulling it loose from the loop of leather at her belt Cha hefted and two handed the ax. Hiding her breath as best she could Cha waited the few seconds and listened for the man's footsteps. As He rounded the corner Cha swung the ax, too low to land a killing blow the Ax caught the man just above the knee. Toppling him over but it seemed like the blow only made the man's drug addled mind angrier rather than cowing him with pain. It was at that moment that Cha realized that this man wasn't going to be scared away easily, Cha came to the realization that she may really have to fight the man or forever be recognized and targeted by the man's allies.

Adopting a wider stance Cha shakily accepted that this was a kill or be killed Adopting a wider stance Cha kept the ax Clutched in to small hands. As the man lunged at her Cha side stepped and Swung again this time catching the man in the lower back, but the swing hardly cut him. Cha not swinging with any conviction lacked the blood lust or anger to really kill the man, the first swing had been desperation but even that didn't seem to be enough.

"C'mere you little Runt, I'l Show ya How to use that thing when I Split yer head with it"

Fearful Cha back pedaled away from the man she didn't wan't to die. Shaking her head Cha was filled with thoughts of running away, escape or something the man had been wounded. Maybe if she left now then he would never come back. Grinning the man Spat at her.

"What's wrong sprat, your spine as warped as your face? Yeah, you little rats that think ya run da quarter, you're all a buncha little good for nothin rats gettin a free ride cause you ain't worth yer salt."

A twinge of anger spiked in Cha, it wasn't huge but her fear was a little repressed by a simmering emotion, but then as Cha was pushing back her emotions and leaving a knife whisked past her face, the man had taken advantage of her pause and thrown a knife at her head, and that's when things began to change, it was one thing to insult Cha, but to attack her and to bring danger to her family, it was too much. Charging at the Man Cha Swung the ax two handed in a small arc, the man responded with a fist to Cha's gut by diving in making Cha overshoot her attack. but the pain was minimal and her swing managed to bludgeon the man with the ax's handle in the ribs. The fight wasn't going to be pretty but Cha was hoping that the dagger the man had throw had been his only one. Pulling the Ax back roughly the blade that had been behind him ripped through the fat flesh above his hip, not particularly deep but it would hurt like hell. Using the man's moment of pain to her Advantage Cha Spun back and hit the man in the side of the head with the blunt side of the head the Ax, if she'd been faster she could have spun it but as it was the attack stumbled him. Pressing her advantage Cha used her anger and adrenaline to press that attack. As Cha caught another fist this time to her head Her ax Was digging into the man's hip. Blow for blow Cha was acquiring bruises, but her opponent was losing blood.

If Cha could scream out as she attacked her opponent perhaps she would have, as it was she had to settle for a grim snarl. she could feel the pain of her opponents fists outside of the red fog that consumed her mind, but within it she could feel the same rage that had burned within her father before her, a berserkers frenzy of sorts, not perhaps powerful but it did well to numb the senses.

It's funny what a person can do once they let their inhibitions go, when adrenaline reaches the muscles and something more primal starts to pump through ones blood they can do incredible things. Stories of men killing bears with their fists alone. Tails of heroism and incredible deeds done, some say that these aren't the men but deities that cause such things. But for the moment Cha felt fairly unstoppable.

Cha wondered when the man was going to realize he was fighting a losing battle. The Axe in Cha's hands was progressively becoming bloodier but the man bolstered by drugs wasn't falling, it was frustrating to keep hitting such an aggressive foe who just wouldn't fall. Something needed to change, Instead of swinging the axe again Cha stepped back and swung with one had catching the inside of the man's arm with the corner of the Blade before ripping it back to her. With that attack Cha effectively ruined the attacking arm, the man recoiled fiercely looking at the gout of blood that spewed from the new wound. Unlike any of the previous wounds the newest one looked like it had actually harmed and phased the man.

Pressing the attack Cha made an effort to be more aware of what was going on, still enraged but making an attempt to control the emotion. Cha Stepped back and lunged to the left this time swinging low catching the man in the back of his uninjured leg, staggering him and bringing him to a knee. When he lashed out with his left Cha caught the attack with the haft of the axe before moving back in this time two handing again and attacking the man's exposed back, circling the man Cha forced him to re-position in accordance to her desires and not his. The question was, how was Cha going to end this fight, it was dragging on because of Cha's ability to really end the man, he was tough and Cha wasn't too strong, but she was faster and clear of mind whereas he was already sluggish from drugs, it shouldn't be nearly as difficult to kill someone already in such poor condition. Stepping back Cha moved in again this time Two handing and putting her Whole body into the swing. Knocking the man's attempt to block her with his arm aside the swing was only a little off and angle and it caught the man's forehead instead of the whole side of his head.

Yanking the axe back again Cha stepped back avoiding a feeble swing from the man, his energy and life were ebbing from him out of the injuries he had sustained that's not so say Cha was going to let her guard down, the man needed to die here and now, he was a danger and if he survived this he'd be back again and likely he'd be more dangerous than ever. Hauling back and going in from blow this time Cha brought the flat back of the ax up into the man's back effectively knocking him back and nearly unconscious.

Standing over the man victoriously Cha's chest heaved as she caught her breath. The man's chest still rose and fell and blood slowly oozed from his wounds. But life was still kindled within him. For the safety of everyone, that would have to end. Closing her eyes Cha raised the axe above her head, gritting her teeth and letting out a silent scream Cha brought the axe down on the man's head chopping into his skull, pulling back Cha brought the axe down again, and again her chops inaccurate as her hands shook and tears rolled down her face, the man's head caved to an ugly bloody pulp his blood mixing with the mud around him darkening the soil and framing his body like some gruesome highlight.

Still shaking Cha looked at the now broken body. It wasn't the first corpse Cha had seen, but it was the first one she'd ever made. Standing over the body Cha felt Bile rise in her throat. Heaving Violently Cha emptied her stomach next to the corpse leaving the already disgusting scene all the less appealing. After some moment Cha began to pull herself together, Rummaging through the man's pockets She quickly pulled out a pouch that jingled and had the heft of some amount of coins and another pouch that was perhaps the drugs that the man peddled, Wrinkling her nose at the leather pouch Cha held onto it deciding that whatever it was it was better off in hands than the hands of someone with worse intentions. Standing up Cha eyed her handiwork and frowned, was this the price of a good deed? If so Cha wasn't to horribly sure she wanted to do to many more good deeds for the orphanage, she felt ill seeing such violence in front of her. It was violence created by her own hands, wielding the ax her father used to similar means, many had fallen in sunberth and they would continue to do so. But this time someone had fallen to her, his death was her work and through it she had started events that she could not truly understand, whatever that man may have gone on to do or who he would have gone on to see was gone. The question was, what would that cause for Cha. Would she be hunted, or remembered, had anyone seen. Pulling her cowl low Cha fled the scen heading back to the orphanage, to her bed where she could hide from her deeds.

The way home was scarier than Cha had ever remembered, the walk home felt terrifying as if every shadow was watching her. Cha felt as if any second the man she had killed would return as a ghost and attack her, or some friend of his misgh pop out of nowhere. Her heart beating in a frenzied pace Cha began to run then sprint home tears still streaming past her muted mouth as she soundlessly gulped down air. As Cha ran she tripped ofver something in an alley, she never saw what it was as she lwed her way back to her feet ignoring her now bruised shin her fear fueling a breakneck pace to the orphanage. Even when the doors came into view Cha didn't relax, making her way inside, slow enough not to stumble over children Cha made her way to her room and climbed to the bunk she called her own before pulling the covers tight over her head.

Cha didn't sleep well that night and when she did she woke from fitful dreams. She had managed to get away this time, but she doubted she would escape the grisly site of the man's bloodied face. Several bruises would appear come morning but they were a small price in comparison to what could have happened.

End.
For now.

I liked this thread, especially because it showed the emotion after the killing. Seemed more realistic. Keep up the good work. If you have any questions please feel free to pm me.
