1st of Summer 517

Balian starred up at the signpost hanging over the door as he walked out. Armoury, it read. A brief flashback flooded his mind, back to the day he first joined the order and had been given the gear meant for members of the order. The symmetry of it seemed almost poetic; he had started this chapter of his life by going to the armoury in the Mithryn outpost, and he was about to end this chapter by going to the armoury here in citadel.

The order had come unexpectedly. Borr Ulrdin had approached Balian just as the squire’s shift at his post that morning was ending. In truth, Bali heard his Patron before he saw him; his thunderous laughter was unmistakable, even in the open air of the court yard. What ever joke Sir Uldrin had heard was lost as the knight approached his squire, his eyes with the typical mischievous gleam to them. “New orders, boy..” Balian groaned internally, both because he never much cared for how Borr almost never addressed him by his name, and because he was sure what ever new task the order had given them was sure to be tedious. “…we’re t’provide escort to tomorrow’s caravan headen to Riverfall, … and to report to the outpost there.” Balian stood there and started to sigh, before the true meaning of what his Patron had said. “..what? Report…to the outpost?” In truth Balian was unsure how to take the news. Surely they mean Mithryn outpost?

“That’s right, boy, we’re headin’ to Riverfall. Thought you migh’ like tha’. If you’d prefer to stay….”

“No!, no…I’ll..ah… I’ll get ready Sir Uldrin!” a huge grin had found residence on the squires face, Balians response was given in haste, cutting off his patron. While Knights might find that a lack of discipline, Borr simply laughed. “Good lad!” the man said as he patted Balian on the back. The two had started making their way towards the Castle as they talked. “There is one thing, though” Borr continued. “Yer to return the loaned gear back to the Armoury. Yer not a knight yet, so ye don’t get to keep yer gear.” Balian stopped for a second, looking down at his armour. Balian felt conflicted. It served its purpose of keeping him relatively protected, however it was neither the best quality, having undoubtedly seen years of use before him, and, to Balian at least, it was to constrictive. Then again, he did not have any replacements. “But Sir, surely the Order cant expect to me to escort anything without gear, do they?” Borr stopped and simply looked back and shrugged, “You’ll have to buy what ya need.” With that, the knight continued walking into the citadel. Right as he was about to enter the main corridor that acted as a street he turned back and yelled. “I’ll meet ye, out here tomorrow first light, to wait for the caravan!”

As such, Balian now found himself standing outside the armoury, sans gear. He positively looked like a civilian.

Balian was at first unsure of which gear he should get first. He had his grandfathers sword, so he figured he had no need for a new one, but he was still lacking in armour, as well as his archery equipment. Truth be told, the prospect of owning his first bow and related gear actually excited Balian, almost as much as the prospect of leaving the confined of this blasted city. Coin purse in hand, he wanted to run off the feathered shaft, the store related to all things archery. He stood at an intersection within the city, one path would take towards the archery store, the other down to the leatherworks, where he thought he could be able to buy affordable amour, as well as other shops where he could get other supplies.

The bow can wait, he thought. As the item he was most looking forward to buying, he did not want to rush it, and he heard that the Feathered Shaft had an archery range, so he might as well take test his new bow there as well. He made his way down the street that lead to the leather shop. Finding it would not be difficult; Balian could follow the smell alone to find it. However, he also knew where it was, outside near the main gate. Balian could probably buy armour more protective that leather, however he was unaccustomed to its weight to to be perfectly honest, he wanted the mobility and flexibility that he had grown accustomed too while wearing the Order’s light armour. Besides, anything metal made noise, and he planned to take this trip to Riverfall to do some hunting.

It was not long before he exited the main corridors if the castle and found himself once again outside in the main courtyard, with his destination not far off. He had little experience with both the shop and its owner, which he knew to be from a land far off. The large man was sitting outside in his rocking chair as Balian approached, lounging in the late morning light. He ceased his rocking and stood as soon as it became clear that Balian would enter, offering a greeting as soon as the young squire was close enough.

“Mornin’ lad, how can I help ye?” The man’s accents was clearly marked him as not native of Sylira, if his deeply bronzed skin wasn’t enough. Yet his tone was friendly and welcoming. Balian returned the smile, the shopkeepers easygoing attitude was infectious. “I’m here to buy some leather armour” Balian took a breath, the distinct smell of leather filling him, “something that I could use both on road, yet won’t hinder when I out hunt” In truth, Bali wasn’t the most knowledge able when it came to leather amour, or most armours for that matter, but he felt his request wasn’t out of hand.

The shopkeepers smile wavered for a moment as he pondered the request, yet he was quick to replace it. “Something light, flexible, yet durable then… Aye, I can help.” His smile broadened as he moved towards the door, motioning for Balian to join him, “th’names Nabinu. Lets see what I got for you”. Balian joined him.

Approximately a bell later, the squire walked back out into the sun with a full suit of leather armour, and about 10 gold pieces lighter in coin purse.

Supplies

The armour was but the first of Balians purchases for the day. he not only needed to replace his equipment, but he also needed supplies for the long journey ahead. As such, Balian stopped by his dormitory to recover his backpack and then proceeded down to the great market of Syliras. There Balian searched, bartered, and bought all the supplies he though we would need; rations, tinder, a tent, and all other items that would make the journey possible and more bearable. He also spent coin on a few items to compliment his gear; in addition to his grandfather’s sword, he purchased two daggers and their sheaths, for while he still trained with the sword, he felt that the daggers might be useful addition for him to learn. Other things he bought, less for their necessity and more for his own interest; a horn, used for hunting. The merchant who stocked it had blown the horn, producing from it a deep yet clear sound that reverberated through the stone arches that made up the bazaar. He had passed by this stall more out of mere interest, but the salesmen had done his job well, and now the horn hung from his belt.

Balian was satisfied with his purchases. His backpack full, his newly acquired pouches filled, he felt that he had everything that he needed to survive the trip. all that remained then was for him to visit the Feathered Shaft. The prospect excited him. Balian was usually unsure of himself, he often doubted his purpose, and he had shown no real skill with sword play. However put a bow in his hands, and Balian lost all doubt. His last stop is one that he had been looking forward to all day.

The day had crept past Balian while he was off during his errands. Syna had now drifted to the afternoon, high in the sky as she was. Balian maintained his excitement as he made his way to the shop, doing all he could to keep his brisk pace from turning into a jog. Soon he was exactly where he wanted to be.

The shops walls were lined with all sorts of bows; long bows, short bows, crossbows, recurves and composites. The fall wall was lined with all manners of arrows; ones with broadheads, others with narrow. Barbed and sleek and hooked, all the kinds that Balian could ever want. It is a shame that he waited this long to come here, as it was as close to paradise that Balian had ever seen. A soft ‘cluck’ broke him out of his thoughts. Looking around Bali was surprised to see a chicken walking around the shop, almost as if it owned it. Balian looked at it quizzically for a moment.

“Oh, don’t mind him.” a voice ventured. Balian turned to find a young man, only a few years older than himself standing next a shelf, apparently polishing one of the many bows that lined the store. “How can I help you?” the man asked. The young squire took a quick look around before answering, trying to find if any of the bows caught his eye. In truth, the selection was almost overwhelming. “I need a new bow” he finally said, his voice unusually confident. The man raised an eyebrow. “Have you ever used bows before? Or would this be the first one?” He asked questioningly. Balian bristled indignantly, of course he knows how to use bows! He quickly stifled that rare lapse of pride, before continuing. “Aye, I do. My father taught me as a lad, and I have been using it in service of the order.” The shopkeeps face changed once he heard his answer, “Ah! I see. Excuse me then. My names Kalvin. What sort of bow are you looking for? And will you be needing anything else?” Bali smiled in return. “A long bow, one that I can use both for hunting as well as in battle, and yes, I’ll be needing some arrows as well as a quiver. Oh, and some archery gloves as well, for the arm and the fingers.” Kalvin nodded.

The time was spent with Kalvin showing Balian the various options. Bows of various lengths and woods. Of different draw strengths, and between regular and composite. As per Balian’s request, the shopkeep recommended that he take a composite bow, as it’s recurve shape meant that it would be easier to handle in tight spaces of forest and indoors, yet still providing the power and accuracy of a classic long bow. For quivers, Kalvin explained the difference between carrying it on his back vs. on his hip. While the former allowed for easier transport, if the arrows were not secure sudden movements and other actions, such as bending over may cause the arrows to fall. A quiver strapped to his hip however, would allow for the archer to reload quicker, however it might hinder his movement in thick bush. For arrows, he was given set of standard arrows, as well as another for hunting.

By the end of it Balian has purchased his bow, quiver that could be modified to hang from both his back and side, and 40 arrows. A leather bow with storage for arrows as well, and the gloves that he could wear with his vambraces. He know had the gear to be a proper archer, as well as the gear he needed for the jouney ahead.
