Open Frost bites

The chill is the worst and the best thing about winter. There’s nothing quite like getting up to mischief in fluffy white snow.

Considered one of the most mysterious cities in Mizahar, Alvadas is called The City of Illusions. It is the home of Ionu and the notorious Inverted. This city sits on one of the main crossroads through The Region of Kalea.

Winter 2nd 517AV
Late morning
Alvadas streets

Her doors were barricaded by a mound of snow… so instead she climbed out of the window. Where there’s a problem, there’s a solution and nothing was going to keep Penny from enjoying her day. Armed with her favourite, thick velvet dress and a black coat to keep her warm, she squeezed herself though the opening and fell right into yet more snow that cushioned her from bumping against the cobbles.

Wherever her eyes looked she saw nothing but beauty. Hills of white snow, taller than she was that glittered in the golden morning sunlight they bathed in. Icicles of flash frozen water turned every roof top into a gaping jaw of translucent teeth. Every door on her street was barricaded. Most Alvads were snowed in much like she was and few did bother to venture into the unforgiving frost much as she did. Few bothered with the cold breeze that bit at her cheeks and turned her nose a deep shade of scarlet.

It took another sweet chilly moment for Penny to scramble out of the snow she fell into, struggling to find footing, for every time she thought she just found something to push her heels against and lift to her feet, she’d feel her boots sinking further down. A part of her wasn’t sure weather the pavement was truly this far down or this was just another one of Ionu’s illusions. Eventually however she managed to wriggle up to her window like a seal in shallow water, where her bone white fingers could grasp at the sill to lift herself up to her feet - a relief.

The young illustrator grinned to herself and she shook snow off of her clothing, making her way over to the door. She had to make it accessible one way or another. And since she lacked a shovel there was only one way to go about it. Penny rolled up her sleeves elbow high and began digging through the snow at her door with her hands, feeling her fingers becoming numb from it. Every couple of moments she had to stop, rub them together and blow so that the numbness didn’t cut off her circulation completely before carrying on, tossing a handful after handful of the softer, less compacted snow from the top, aside and into the street.

Frost bites

Aster hadn't had any plans of leaving her room that morning. She had been wrapped tightly in her cloak and blanket, perched on the windowsill, simply enjoying the view she had of the world bathed in white. Navi had wanted out, though, so Aster had taken her down to the front door to let her out of the inn; it had taken most of the day yesterday, but with the help of volunteers who were staying there, the snow had been cleared enough to allow for people to leave.

But upon opening the door to the outside world, she couldn't help herself; the snow was mostly undisturbed, leaving a vast expanse of white that glittered in the sunlight. Mountains of snow heaped under houses with icicle daggers hanging dangerously above them, refracting sunlight through the rippled surface. It was too beautiful to simply ignore.

Stepping outside, wrapping her thick cloak tightly around her, Aster stepped onto the compact snow right outside of the doorway. Navi promptly barreled through the nearest pile, sending snow flying everywhere in a mini blizzard. Aster couldn't help the giggles that tore out of her as the flakes swirled around her, settling into her hair. Taking a few more steps forward, she promptly found herself sinking into the snow.

"Cold," she gasped, plunging into the surface until her mid-calves, the snow managing to find its way into a thin gap between her dress and the tops of her boots. The brisk air bit sharply at her cheeks, and she shivered. She'd forgotten how much she disliked the cold.

She was prepared to turn right around and hightail it back inside to make a cup of tea, but Navi waded through the snow towards her, staring up with her big brown eyes and tongue lolling. Her tail was wagging happily, and though she was only a dog, her face seemed expectant.
"Navi, it's too cold."

The dog cocked her head, giving a small bark and then a whine. Aster sometimes wondered just how much Common the dog understood. "No." An unblinking brown gaze stared back at her, the mutt's tail slowing in its wagging.

Some would call Aster weak for it, and she probably was, but she gave in with a sigh.
"Fine. Let's go." A part of her wanted to explore the winter wonderland she had found herself in anyway, despite the freezing temperature. She picked a direction and began to walk, trying to gauge her steps carefully, but no matter what she did the small sliver of skin just above her boots on each leg was relentless exposed to the snow. Navi bounded ahead, plowing through snow and then running back before forging ahead again. At least it made walking slightly easier, since there was some sort of tracks to follow.

The streets were barren; most sensible people were probably cooped up inside in the warmth. As she continued to walk, though, Aster noticed a lone figure in the distance that seemed to be braving the weather and trying to dig their door out. it took a few moments, but once she got closer, she recognized the figure as Penny.

Aster waved, hoping to catch the girl's attention as she finally drew close enough to speak.
"Penny! What in the stars are you doing?" Aster asked, both baffled and somewhat amused as she gazed on the glove-less girl and the steadily growing dent in the pile of snow. "You're going to catch frostbite, if not your death." She scolded. Recognizing Penny and going by Aster's friendly demeanour, Navi trotted closer, sticking her nose into Penny's leg and huffing, clearly expecting pats.

Aster looked between the girl and the pile of snow; it seemed a futile task. She wanted nothing more than to be out of the cold, to go back to the inn and warm up, but she couldn't abandon her poor friend.
"At least let me help," She sighed, with a small shake of her head and the barest hint of a smile.

Despite her hatred of the cold, it would probably be easier on her given that she tended to run a little bit warmer. It still certainly wouldn't be pleasant to plunge her bare hands into the snow, though. But Aster was willing to do just about anything to help others out, especially when it was one of the rare few individuals she considered a friend.

Frost bites

It was a familiar voice that warmed the young woman’s ears. And then a warm, fluffy snout brushed against her leg as Penny’s heart elated at the presence of her friends. Perhaps she wasn’t the only Alvad whose heart had been filled with more brute determination rather than sense. Stopping her task long enough to smile at Aster, Penny then hunched over Navi and wound her arms around the warm pooch, scratching her breast bones and belly in a manner of excitable affection.

At the offer of help Penny hadn’t peeked even a word of disagreement. There was simply no way she could shift all that snow herself, in spite of what she may like to have believed. She had however giggled merrily at the remark, feeling her lips tighten from the cold with every word.

“You may have to if we stand any chance of getting back inside, else Lopi will need to learn to hunt come next thaw. And I sincerely doubt he has that level of agility.” she laughed watching Aster’s pale hands disappear into the white softness.

A moment later Penny was right beside her using all of her might, which admittedly was rather unimpressive, to push the snow away from the now emerging door frame. The sight of familiar wood and stone gave her heart hope that this task could perhaps be achieved before afternoon tea.

An intense pain ran through her fingertips as she brought them up to her face once more, trying to coax her circulation back into action. “It’s wonderful to see you again my friend but somehow I can’t picture you venturing out in this horrid weather just to see me. What has you out, my dear?”
