Melding into nothing

The molds sat on the workbench waiting for someone to pulled them apart and finish the job once started. Alex however spend her time tending to the kiln and getting it ready for another firing, it had been burning for hours but for some reason she just couldn't get it stable. After fighting with it for over an hour she decided to just leave it be for now and let it burn itself into whatever it may.

Moving back to the table the first things she does is reach for the large mold she had been working in. She slides it closer to her with great effert before pulling on the knob of the clamp. The heat caused things to flex and distort but all in all it held together nicely. She undid the clamp and pulled it away setting it down gently before pushing on the mold. Nothing much happened when she did that but it was to be expected. Tapping the sides of the mold with whatever the closest metal object was started to do the trick. After another 10 minutes the mold pulled away leaving the slick glass jar sitting on the bench. A few brushes with her fingertips pushed away the remaining debree from the mold. She picked it up and turned it slowly in her hands looking over each curve. The examined the color spread across the object and payed close attention to air bubbles and thin walls. It looked perfect. The walls were thick enough and the color mixed into every part of the glass. She couldn't have asked for much more.

Setting it down on the table she picked up the next pieve of glass, the last bit she made only days before. Without even looking at it she closed her fingers around the object and slid her thumb across its surface looking for the jagged edge. Walking over to the flames she could already see it had stabolized althought a little cooler then she might have liked. Adding a little more fuel would take care of that. Sometimes she just gave it a little more attention then it actually needed, complicating things that were simple.

It wouldn't be to long until she had the flames right where she wanted them. When she did it was back to work on this small piece of glass. It wasn't until she reached for her tongs did she noticed blood dripping from her thumb. She let out a little sigh and just muttered. "Careless" to herself knowing full well she caught a sharp edge. It wouldn't slow her down much as she grabbed the tongs and ignored the blood. Picking up the chunk of glass she turned it so the sharp size, the side she had detached it from was facing outward. She moved it closer to the flames until it started to meld and smooth out the edges. Turning the glass she watched it like a hawk making sure the backside didn't get to hot. The last thing she wanted to do was have it lose its shape. What good was a top that didn't fit.

The blood dripping from her hand would slow and stop in its own time. It was something she would tend to later if need be but for now she was focused on her task at hand. It would take nearly an hour before she was happy with the results she was getting, twisting and turning the glass until it was just right. Perfection was something she had always strive for even when she was under much more pressure then she was not. What should have taken minutes would, at times take her hours unless someone was there to guide her. Even if the customer did not know the difference she would and that was what really mattered.

Once she had completed her work on this piece she would take a few steps to the side and rest the glass against the kiln. It was warm but not overly hot and she wanted to slow the cooling process down from minutes to hours. The made sure the glass did not crack due to temperature changes. This kind of failure happened pretty often with a lot of pieces, especially with someone knew but as her skills progressed this fear cropped up less often. Alex had her plan of attack and followed it only making minor adjustments when she felt confident in her current set of actions.

From here she could let the fire burn without risk of hard to anything so this is where she stopped. A nice rest would do her good and forgetting about her wound she wiped a little sweat from her brow. Boy oh boy was that a bad move as the salty sweat worked its way through the dried blood mixing with everything hidden below. The crimson smear was the last things she would notice as pain started to run though the nerves. Her lips parted and she let out a small noise as her fingers curled into her palm only hovering millimeters above the open wound. Her back arced as muscles around her body began to lock up and a few drops of blood fell to the floor. “Ouch...” She said to herself softly and slowly in Nari closing her eyes.

This would be the form she would hold as she took in slow steady breaths focusing on her breathing rather then the pain itself. Her eyes slowly opened only to give her blurry visions of what was sitting in front of her. She brushed a few tears from her eyes with her forearm and focused on the injury she had sustained. It didn't appear to be anything more then a clean cut, something that with a little time should heal without any issue. She flashed back to thoughts of her first few cuts while training to work with glass. The feeling when water washed over it, the tools seeking glass shards in her foot. The smell of alcohol just before her flesh was covered it. She thought to herself at least this time she didn't scream.

Blinking several times her vision started to clear as she focused on her boots. They were rather simple as she was not very high ranking among artisans when she left. They were made of dark brown leather with rounded toes, something she preferred. The tread was thick but warn with a bit of a heel giving her and extra inch or so in height. A flap pulled around the front as a leather lace wrapped around the boot and tied into a bow facing outward on both sides. These boots were her last large expense before she left home and had treated her quite well.

As control over her body began to restore she arched her back and shifted her shoulders trying to let even the tiniest bit of stress move through her and into the ether. Scanning the room she noticed a pile of rags and rushed over to them. The majority of them looked clean-ish so she grabbed one off of the pile and wrapped it around her hand. Using her teeth and freehand she tied a knot and pulled it tight trying to put as much pressure on her wound as she could. All she really wanted to do was make sure she would not accidentally do something like that again.

Moving a few steps over she grabbed a flask she had with her and drank the water quickly while she looked at the rest of her lunch. Dried and salted meats, some cheese and a few pickled veggies were on the menu although just the sight of the salted meat started to turn her stomach. She could almost feel the pain in her hand has bile swelled in her gut. Reaching over she flipped up the handkerchief just enough to block her view. “Looks like that will be off the menu today.”

Here she would sit for the time being just taking a break from her tasks. Other than cleaning the jar was finished and had a lid to match. The color was brilliant and she was excited to see how the customer would react. It gave her joy just knowing that a little piece of herself would not be completely forgotten to time. She hoped it would bring fond memories to someone or at least be useful. She would nibble her cheese and and take a few more swigs of water before getting back to her feet. Briskly she walked over to the table and picked up the jar taking a moment to examine the color by the light of the kiln.

Going back to her workbench she looked over all of the tools once more. They were in working order but she wanted to get something better. She had enough money saved up to buy better tools it was going to be a matter of finding better tools for sale. The blow pipe would be the first thing she wanted to upgrade, next up would have to be some of the molds. She could however make some herself now that she was a little more confident of her skills. It would be something to consider, finding blanks should be easy enough.

With those thoughts she figured she would go back to work and grab the cooled mold sitting on the table. It had been waiting for her for days and to be honest she was a little frightened of it. It has been some time since she made a pane of glass and never without direct instruction. If she was to hasty there would be bubbles and although it might be used as an art piece she felt this would defeat the purpose of the glass. If she didn't let it cool long enough to would crack and again be useless for its destined task. Finally the last thing she thought of was the glass breaking while she removed it from the mold. While this was unlikely all she could picture was it stuck inside the mold. Letting out a little sigh she began to remove the clamps one after another. Four in total, one after another finding its place once again on her work bench as she slowly removed them keeping the model firmly on the table. The last thing she wanted to do was drop the sheet.

Finally she set the mold down and gently tapped the sides with whatever tool was closest to her. She grabbed a wooden spoon looking thing she often used for shaping glass, it would have enough give that she didn't worry about using a little extra muscle. With a few taps and a few wobbles she had the glass free. She smiled and said in her native tongue. “No bubbles and its not cracked I call that perfect.” Time had been on her side as she had taken hours longer then someone with a bit more skill would have but she was not in a rush, she just needed to get the work done right the first time. She couldn't afford to waste materials or someones time right now. She was still someone unknown in the city and needed time to build her name.

Beaming she started to wrap the glass in a soft cloth in order to protect it from harm. Everything was going so well she couldn't be more happy. She would even be early in her deliveries, the extra built in time for damage really was not needed. She felt like her skills had really progressed while she was here. Once everything was packed away and cleaned up she got ready to leave. It was a bit later in the evening then she expected but the city had a way of getting away from her.

Stopping for a moment she remembered that this work space was something used by many people. Sure she rented it out but while she was away anyone was welcomed and encouraged to use the space. Wanting to leave a note letting whoever may enter to be mindful she had no paper or ink. She hummed as she looked around the room. Taking a twig or two in hand she broke them apart and wrote her message 'caution' spelled out on the table with an arrow pointing to her cloth wrapped bundles. She thought this was a clever way of leaving things and once again turned and left the building.

Like most days the city would decide to play tricks on her. She walked for what felt like an hour still not finding her way home. Normally she would just give up and just head in whatever direction seemed to open up before her. Alexandra felt that the city just wanted her to bend to its will. While this may be true at times it had so much more to offer her. This time she decided to fight the city and take turns as they became available. The path ahead would be clear and far more inviting but it was time for a change. Her life had been controlled enough and it was time to see something else.

The city didn't seem to have trouble keeping up with her as each bend lead to less and less options. A alley way filled with door would soon become a path that all but dead ended. Deciding she wanted to go beyond the the wall the stack of boxes before her would make as good of a ladder as anything else. The ground beneath her was far lower then the other side and landing on her feet caused her some pain. Her heels burned but it would not stop her from moving forward, just slow her down. Soon voices could be heard in the distance.

Moving forward Alex ignored all of the other paths moving towards the echoing voices. She stopped at the edge of a building and watched as a crowd gathered around two figures she had never seen before. It was obvious by the way people seemed to worship them that they were important in some way. Keeping her distance she watched as several citizens begged to be favored by the pair. The women obviously in charge didn't speak a word and only gestured to the second person, Alex unsure if it was a male or female from this distance.

Several people moved forward pleading to be blessed by these people. It seemed like only second passed before the chaos began and with quick fingers and sharp blades it all began. The two sliced through flesh and bone with amazing speed turning the bodies of the worshipers into something else. Alex couldn't help but stare, frozen in place with her jaw dropping to the floor. Flesh was flayed, pulled and stitched into place to make something gruesome out of what was once a follower. The creatures of this land could be dangerous. This was a very big part of why people stayed in the cities and did not venture to far out into the wilderness but this, this was something different. It was as if they were seeking this. They wanted this, lined up to be 'chosen' by these beasts. Sure hunters stalked pray, come creatures even liked to play with the catch before it was consumed but this? This was not hunting, this was not a beast capturing its pray. This was something else entirely. Alex began to shake as she pulled back into the shadows once again. Her eyes were wide open as thoughts ran through her mind. She couldn't process what was going as she slowly slid down the wall. Pulling her knees to her chest she sat and thought trying her best to process any of these. One more scream was all it took to get her back to her feet. The sound of pleasure mixed with so much pain. Pushing herself back up she quickly got to her feet and started to run. She ran as fast as she could not taking a second thought about where she was headed just so long as she was moving further away from here.

Alex only stopped when her feet refused to carry her. Her knee buckled and down she went, her hands out in front only bracing her for part of the fall. Hands flat on the ground she managed to push herself up to her knees just before the bile swirling in her stomach leapt out of her stomach and rushed past her lips covering the ground in front of her.

“Cuckoo dek licker!” Alex exclaimed before another surge of bile made its way onto the floor, her hands and her shirt. Still unstable she forced herself to her feet again using her arm to wipe her face as she stumbled forward. All she wanted to do right now was go home so she kept moving. It was all she knew to do in this moment, just keep moving. With each unsteady step she felt like she was moving closer and closer to home. Slipping her hand in her pocket she felt the pull of her key and took the next turn. The empty street was narrow and this just made her pulse quicken. A few more streets over and she would be home.

Once home she quickly locked the door and pushed her table against it. Quickly a chair would follow along with anything else that had any weight to it. Nothing was going to come in her room tonight. Papers, book and cloths were scattered around the room as she searched for her dagger. The room looked more like a dervish had searched it then a little red head but once found it was quickly tucked into her waistband. Next she grabbed her bow, this never left its resting place. She sat on her bed, resting on the wall where the headboard should be. Nocking an arrow she aimed her bow at the door and waited. Her bow would slowly lover over minutes as her muscles no longer listened to the commands her mind was sending them. Here she would stay, propped up against the wall until the sun came up.
