Brave the Storm

Lani was supposed to get off work early because of Market Day. However there was so much to do at the stables that Hansi did not dismiss the Chiet workers until late in the evening, nearly the end of Market Day. There was plenty to do, with the oncoming storm, all the horses had to be inside with their windows boarded against the wind. The hay and feed had to be properly stored and covered to make sure that the humidity and wind didn’t ruin it. The water had to be covered and dispersed so the winds did not throw interesting things into the horse’s drinking troughs. Along with all of that, there was the regular horse care which they had to care for, and by the time all of them were done, it was late in the evening.

Lani was covered in straw and dirt. She always wore her boots to the stables, by the nature of the job, and was happy she had done so today, because there was a smear of horse dung on her boot that she had hardly had time to rub off, so it had crusted and now fell from the leather when she tapped her boot on the cobbled inside of the stables. Normally Lani wouldn’t be so eager for the Market Day, but she had put in orders at Thread Bare for some new clothes, and Leyla had told her today they would all be ready to pick up. She didn’t want to miss it and have to wait another ten days to get her new clothes. Checking the storage rooms to ensure all her required work was done, Lani strutted past them, heading straight for Hansi who was consulting with another Chiet at the end of the stables.

The wind buffeted the side of the building, screaming against the wood structure, and threatening to lift it off the side of the mountain. It was going to be an interesting trek back to the Sanikas Gates, although there were a few other Chiet who were going to make the trek with her, so if for whatever reason Zulrav decided to pluck her off the face of the Earth, perhaps the other Chiet would attempt to catch her.

”Yes, you can go now.” Hansi turned at Lani’s approach dismissing her and the other nearby Chiet at the same time. The youngest girl who worked in the Stables let out a very large sigh, and Lani felt a bit of relief herself, but it was quickly interrupted by the tension of having to brave the winds. It was winter and so the sun was setting early, but the large clouds were not helping with the light. When she and three other Chiet workers made their way to the edge of the stables, looking out to the pastures and up the trail they had to climb back into the Volcano. She could see Syna settling into the ocean now, being chased down by the dark and twisted clouds that howled in the afternoon sky. Although she could see the burning orange sphere of the sun, little light reached them, which made the normally short and easy trek seem far more intimidating than she was used to. It was a strange and dark beauty, that she could not help but admire.

But she was not the only one hesitating, and it only took her one glance at the Chiet that hesitated beside her to make up her mind. With a racing heart, she stepped out into the wind.

Brave the Storm

Postby Lani Stranger on December 1st, 2018, 5:30 am

Immediately the rain pelted her skin, and the wind screamed around her, as if offended by her bravery. She could not hear the others behind her, but she tried to not look back to see if they had followed. She wanted the safety of numbers, but she was not going to give in and look back to see if she was to be judged as stupid or brave. However she was not an idiot, and even though she had admired the view of the breaking storm, she ran through the rain now, feeling the needles on her bare cheeks. She clutched her arms around her sides, and kept her gaze on the trail, identifying the dim rocks and lumps in it so she did not trip. It was after a few ticks of trying to jog through the storm that she could see two other pairs of feet beside her.

Unable to help herself, Lani glanced up to her left and saw the young Chiet girl keeping pace with her. Curious, she snapped her head quickly further back to see the other two following in short succession. She returned her head forward, a little happy that she had been the first to brave the dangerous wind, but not the only one to do so.

They ran for a few chimes, and by the time they entered the Sanikas Gates, they were all shivering thoroughly, even through their thick Katinues, and Lani’s cloak. The chatter of nari erupted around her, a clear aura of relief seeping out of the Inartan Chiets. She was shivering too hard to pay attention to their words, and tucked her fingers in her armpits and immediately began heading down towards the warrens of the city. She had been told Market Day would be in the Stained Glass Gallery because of the storm, and so that is where she headed.

”Chaktawe!” One of the Chiets called her, and she turned, unintentionally glaring at the girl who had sighed. ”Sorry, are you coming to the baths?”

”I need to go… to Market Day.” She said, not expecting the sudden invitation. Of course they were all heading to the baths, likely given up on getting to Market Day on time, and not needing to like she did. She thought of the steamy room and the possibly welcoming party to attend it with and wished she could say yes, but she needed to pick up her clothing.

”W-Why?” The girl asked through chattering teeth, and Lani’s eyes flitted to the other two who stood, shivering and waiting for the Chiet that was talking to the foreigner.

”C-Clothing, Leyla-“

”Make a D-Dek do it. Y-You’re going to get s-sick.” The girl chattered, sky blue eyes searching the edges of the streets for a wandering Dek. ”You!” She snapped when her eyes landed on an unfortunate soul. The Dek looked up, having been sweeping the dust from his area. She could see a deformity of his face, although she could not place it. Like all Inarta he had the bright red hair and icy blue eyes, but there was something different about his face that she couldn’t quite place.

Brave the Storm

”Yes?” He walked towards them to hear better, and she could hear in his voice the sound of those who were mentally slow. As he neared she could see that he had a smaller skull than most humans, with an upward slant to his eyes, and folds like the Vantha, but also not like the Vantha. His nose was small with a flat bridge and forehead, and his mouth was also smaller, with a short palate, and small teeth, a protruding tongue stuck out of them, as if there was not enough room in his mouth to put it, or that he only knew how to breathe from his mouth.

”Go get, uhh, Lani, her things from the Market.” She commanded with the authority that Lani only ever saw with Avora or Endal. ”Did you order from Felicity or Leyla?” The young Chiet girl turned to Lani and the foreigner shivered out her answer. ”Get her things from Leyla, and deliver them to her dwelling.”

”Did you already pay for them?” She turned to Lani again, and Lani nodded.

”In Full.” Leyla had not trusted any less of a deal, with how much Lani had ordered. The Chiet nodded, and then she actually waved the boy away. He smiled, and nodded, happy to not be doing whatever he had originally been doing, and begun heading towards the market, wicker broom still in hand.

Lani had not known that Chiet could order Dek, as she had only ever seen Avora or Endal do so, but she supposed that by nature of the castes, it was well within their right. Still, she was happy this strangely friendly girl had done it for her, because something made her sad about seeing the mentally slow boy do the drudge work. She understood it was the way of life here, but she was still not used to the harsh reality of it. Still, she wasn’t going to give up her now clear opportunity to join the other Chiet stable workers in the warm baths, and no longer worried about missing her clothing order. The Chiets were already turning away, apparently assuming Lani would follow suit. The foreigner glanced at the Dek once more, and then looked back to the group who had not only not been rude to her, but had invited her to join them. The girl had even commented on her health, as if she was a member of her society to be looked after as well. Still thinking she possibly imagined it, Lani sped up after the girl, keeping pace behind the other Chiet as their shivering forms headed towards the baths to warm up after braving the terrible storm.
