A Time for a Tenday

10 Fall 525

A Tenday, as Willis had come to learn, was at once a complex and simple thing. A fire. Food. Revelry. Companionship. People talked. Some played music. Some danced. Some just ran around and experienced the vibes. Others stuck to their own metaphorical corner and just watched without saying much.

Earlier during the occasion Willis had tried out a few new foods, some odd kind of meat from a jungle animal along with a new baked treat he could not name he believed the older lady from the inn he stayed at had made. Now he stood there content, his belly full, just slowly moving about without really having a specific plan in mind. A bit away he could here someone drumming some kind of instrument, and someone else making occasional thrums of a stringed instrument. Not really playing anything himself Willis was not sure, but assumed the stringed instrument was just preparing to play not actually playing as it seemed to only emit single sounds at a time before halting for a good half chime and emitting another short sound.

At the moment the festivities were at a bit of a lull. The sky had grown dark, and much of the lighting was from the fire. However not much dancing or music playing had really gotten going. Willis was sure that before long such things would begin, but not quite yet.

While Willis pondered what to do next, several children came running by in a group while shoving and laughing. Boys and girls, they were not hurting anyone, not being a bother, just being children. Willis for his part was technically of age by human standards, and by his height he looked fully grown, but in reality he was just a teen himself. Not yet fully grown, not yet fully matured, still gangly, and to anyone looking closely more like an oversized child than an adult. He knew how to act well enough when he needed to, but he was no adult. Not were it really counted.

Having gone to tendays before but not having spoken to any of the kids without adults around, Willis realized he did not know them that well as one of the older boys came walking up to him with several other children in tow. The one approaching him now seemed human, but Willis was not too good at tell apart sub races and the like, so could not say for sure that he was one. "Who are you then? Where are you from?"

Rather than answering this right away Willis pondered for a moment, unsure what to say. Efram's ideas on their response were colorful, but probably not the best idea for a first meeting. Willis for his part decided to answer honestly, though without going into the finer details. But before that he needed to figure out what exactly was being asked.

"I'm Willis Efram. As for where I'm from... Well that is a long story. And honestly it depends on what you mean by that. Do you mean where I was born? Where I was before I came to Syka? Where I consider home? Where I've lived the longest? Could you be a bit more specific? And also I've introduced myself but I don't think I got your name..."

With that Willis held out his hand to offer it to the youth, a very human greeting that also was sometimes used by other races if not in the exact same way. An Akalak in his experience would probably do a hand shake while showing off their strength. And back on the island he had seen quite a few Konti use it while meeting his eyes in an unnerving gaze. Its uses were plentiful, as was the variances in how it could be used.

A Time for a Tenday

While pausing for a few moments, after a short wait the youth begrudgingly took Willis grasp, though in more of a slap and tug and an actual hand shake. Looking put upon that the Akontak did not know his name, while openly eyeing him up and down, he finally spoke. "My names Julian. I watch out for the other kids. So if your gonna be around them, I gotta make sure your not trouble see? Wait... How old are you. You got kind of a... Weird look about you... Are you a Verusk or something? You don't look quite like an Akalak either... So where are you from? Like where were you born I guess?"

Nodding along seriously, as only someone seriously considering the others words, Willis pondered further with a serious demeanor, serious things. Mentally Efram was laughing at Willis, for his attempt at maturity and being overly serious with such a simple question. With a mental urging Efram willed for Willis to take the backseat, assuring him he could handle things much better. Willis for his part gave in to his brother, though while reminding him not to start any physical fights and to keep it at words. With a nearly seamless transition Efram took over, imperceptible to all but those either very observant or aware of body language and its changes. When he did take over they seemed to hold themselves a bit looser, a bit less prim and proper, and spoke a bit less hurriedly.

"Oh sure, makes sense. Can't have people messing with your people. I get it. And Syka's a nice place, people aren't too serious, not in such a rush to get by, its a place you can kind of just... Get by in. Don't want anyone messing with what you've got. Honestly though, by my standards, you got a weird look about you to. Kinda plain too. Most people I see do. Honestly I can't really tell you human sub types apart, you are human aren't you? Or I guess you could be a Kelvic. Probably not. All look the same. Barely any hues of skin, a few hair colors, two arms and legs, no scales or gills or wings. I mean its kind of limiting right?"

Willis for his part was mentally slapping a palm to his forehead, seeing Efram immediately move to go insult the youth. But to be fair nothing he said was a lie... However rather than getting angry several of the kids laughed, several catching Willis Efram's eyes. Particularly one with more than two arms, and another with scales and gills who the brothers were almost certain was a Konti child. Having seen quite a few back in Mura he knew the basics of their appearance, though didn't know what the one with extra arms were. Willis was further distracted about this when he then connected that to magic, and wondered what it would be like if she learned projection. After all with extra limbs she could do many things while still having a pair free to use...

Julian for his part seemed a bit annoyed, but mostly just confused by his response. Clearly it was not the one he was expecting, and so he was left a bit off center and unsure how to proceed. Taking that gap Efram continued, spouting off more words.

"Oh, right you did have questions didn't you? Lets see... No, I'm not a Verusk. I think those are some of the locals living around here right? Vaguely know of them, but I'm not one. Not an Akalak either technically. I'm an Akontak. Kind of like a mix of a Konti and an Akalak, with a bit of the parts and specialties of both, but not really either. So depending on how you look at it, I'm both and neither. Kind of my own thing. Or if you look at it another way, like a lot of the adults not here seem to, I'm a bit of a freak who doesn't fit with either of them, but which they try to force to fit into either or both places. Really all that means is I get weird looks both in Mura and Riverfall. Does that answer your question?"

During several lulls in Eframs response Julian seemed about to speak, but then seemed to think better of it and paused to think on his response. Eventually he did respond a bit more quietly than before. "Oh so... An Akontak. Never heard of them before... Wait so your from both Riverfall and Mura then?"

A Time for a Tenday

Postby Willis Efram on November 3rd, 2025, 10:14 pm

Willis for his part was quite annoyed at Efram's blunt response, but he was going to let his brother handle things so long as he didn't go to far with things... Or so Willis told himself, but really in this case and many others he was rather soft on his brother while trusting him more than he admitted. And oddly enough this trust seemed to not be misplaced, as for some reason Willis couldn't explain Efram seemed to be doing decently at conversing with Julian and the children.

Rather than quit there though Efram kept at things, blustering on with further blunt explanations and honest words that somehow always came off as rude but which also seemed to be something oddly enough Julian was receptive to. This time he started things off with a noncommittal shrug while meeting Julians gaze for a moment and then turning to look at the other children middling about.

"Ah no, not really I suppose... Honestly for the foreseeable future I consider this place, Syka, my home. And while I've lived in a lot of places, I don't think I really fit in or consider Riverfall or Mura my home. The Akalak and Konti in general seem to like me well enough, but honestly most of them are so weird about it, and the ones who aren't just seem to have crazy expectations about what I'll do someday. But I mean, you asked about my age earlier, for a human I'm an adult, but Konti and Akalak don't really age the same as humans... And no one really seems to have a firm answer on how Akontak age. Not common enough to have a good idea I guess. But I've managed to get by on my own so far, and I'm learning some skills that will help me with that."

Julian for his part was nothing if not observant, and seemed to have picked up on the Akontak's meaning from what he had said. Shuffled about place to place, not an adult technically, living on his own, not stated but implied he was without any parents, adults expecting things but not his parents either. Several of the children figured it out then, the term that best fit him, though only Julian said it out loud. Though when he did he seemed to have taken on a less harsh tone. "Orphan... So your one too. Same as us. Yeah, I guess Syka isn't so bad for us here. How'd you?... I mean you don't have to say if you don't want, but how'd you end up one?"

Efram for his part smiled, but it was a smile that did not reach his eyes, a sight Julian seemed to understand. He didn't press, just letting the Akontak talk or not talk, not in a rush as they were waiting for the music to start and out of everyone's way as they were just a cluster of children.

"Hmmm... Honestly, that's a bit of a hard question, in more than one way. In one sense, I never met my parents, or at least not that I can remember. The first thing I know, I was a little kid in Ravok being raised by my "mom" T'ana and.... Some guy. She wasn't my mother by blood, but she was my real mother, she raised me. She managed to get me out, helped me escape, but I'm pretty sure she died for it. Same as with the guy, though he probably got what was coming to him... "

Though he had never said the word slave his depiction of his escape and other details made it clear enough to Julian. This, unbeknownst to the Akontak brothers, was due in part to Julian himself having been a slave and having lived in Ravok. After staring at the tall youth for a bit Julian finally spoke, breaking the other kids out of there momentary revelry. "Whatever, enough of that serious stuff. Your fine for now. But if your gonna hang with us you gotta come up with a game. So whats it gonna be? We need to kill some time, so you pick a game, something fun we can all do. So, whatcha got?"
