A surreal cavern city inhabited by Symenestra where stones glow and streets are reams of silk. Cocoon like structures hang between stalactites and cascade over limestone flows in organic and eerie arabesques. Without a Symenestra willing to escort you, entrance is impossible.

Shai quickly took his measurement from elbow to elbow and muttered the number beneath her breath so she wouldn’t forget it. “Of course, rumors are for women working over weaving awls and sewing hoops.” She gave a little laugh at her supposed joke and she walked behind him and dropped one end of the tape. Stepping on the tail of tailor’s measurement device she took his height at the shoulders and quietly announced this to herself too. “The child and the mother hm?” Shai had trepidations about this line of talk but she couldn’t resist. It was cathartic to be the teller and not the one bearing every slithering syllable as they beat upon her shoulders. Shai knew she would pay for this conversation later, in the quiet solitude she so often lived in now. A bitter smile graced her lips as she took her final measurement; his shoulders.

“Well,” she started and she moved back towards the closet. Hidden within was a small leaflet of papers, she very quickly wrote down the measurements she’d just taken along with ‘Veldrys’. “The child has never been recovered though it is assumed he is still with the father. As mad the doctor might be, no Symenestra would steal its own child just to abandon it.” She sighed, “At least I like to think not.” Turning back to him, “Now as for the mother, well she is still around. Last I heard she had taken up again with her nest. I suppose she is waiting.”

Shai had to hide the epiphany as it struck her,How ridiculous!. It hadn’t been until she spoke the rumor, and in fact the truth, out loud to Veldrys that it became so clear. She was waiting, waiting on some miniscule hope that her son might be returned to her. She laughed, “But! If it was me, I would be searching every corner of the surface for my son.”

Ouch! That laugh had hurt and she could taste a trickle of blood inside her mouth but it didn’t feel as though her lips were bleeding again so hopefully the healer wouldn’t notice. It would seem ungrateful to mare his hard work for a chuckle. Still, now she knew. Tomorrow she would begin her preparations; it was time to stop wishing on fate and grip it by the stones. She would return with her son. “Well, those measurements are all that I needed Veldrys. I can deliver the cloak to your home or if you’d prefer the Purging. Delivery girls are excellent at remembering locations.” She offered with some excitement from her revelation leaking into her demeanor. How the male would take it she couldn’t say but a part of her didn’t care. Perhaps she wouldn’t be waylaid by mental distress this time, she would plan instead. By now, her original destination and meeting seemed so far away, as though they had been a dream within a nightmare.

„Oh, I’m interested in rumours as well despite the fact that I’m not a woman“, he assured her, not realizing that she had made some kind of joke. „Especially if those rumours concern people I once knew, people that I don’t have the opportunity to question myself anymore.“ While waited for her to tell him more about his former mentor, he obediently followed whatever orders she gave him and tried to make it easier for her to take his measurements.

„And Dhalvasha really disappeared without a trace?“ he asked, furrowing his brow as she finally revealed more. „Do you have any idea why he stole this boy? Or has his madness robbed him of all reason?“ He still found it hard to believe that Dhalvasha had really done that. It didn’t make any sense. What had the man been thinking?

„His wife might have left as well then?“ he asked. „Who is she by the way? Do you know her?“ He couldn’t remember Dhalvasha ever mentioning a wife. Why had he hidden her from him? Had they married in secret? Maybe he had heard of her family. In Kalinor most people had at least heard of each other at one point. He shook his head. The whole story was strange.

As she told him that she was done, he smiled at her. He looked a little distracted though. He was still thinking about the man he had thought he knew. „Deliver it to my home please. Things can be rather hectic at the Purging.“
