Veldrys of the Vervain Web

Appearance: Veldrys‘ skin is pale and possesses a nearly translucent quality, revealing the faint web of veins underneath. His features are delicate, and the skin on his face is soft and smooth, without even a hint of a beard. His eyes are a startling amethyst shade, framed by long silver lashes. Those eyes are the only thing of color about him. His hair is but a few shades darker than his skin, a deep silver. Veldrys is slender, more so than most humans, and looks like a pair of strong hands could nearly snap him in two. While his face looks nearly human, his arms, with hands that end in black claws, are entirely too long for him to be mistaken for a human, even from a distance. He usually files those claws short so that they don’t hinder him in his work as a healer. When he is in the company of other races, Veldrys rarely smiles so as to not reveal the sharp canines that are hidden behind his lips, the clearest sign of his predatory nature. Outside his home the Symenestra tends to wear his exoskeleton armor to protect his fragile body. That armor is usually hidden under sombre robes so as to not raise too many questions. Veldrys has a pleasant voice, but due to the fact that Common is not his native language, he speaks with a noticeable accent.

Personality: Veldrys is a quiet man. He is slow to warm up to other people and prefers to keep to himself most of the time. Physical contact often makes him slightly uncomfortable. He has few friends and has never taken a lover. There was only one brief romance, in his youth that he often remembers with a kind of melancholy.

Veldrys‘ mother died giving birth to him, and he hates himself for it. Veldrys cares deeply for his two sisters, born by surrogates, but at the same time he resents the Harvest since finding out what happened to the women that gave birth to his siblings. He knows that as the oldest child of the Web it will be his duty to find surrogates for his sisters when it is time, and he dreads that day.

Veldrys is acutely aware of how desperate the situation of the Symenestra is, but he cannot bring himself to abduct a woman and condemn her to an early death, even if it is the only way for his race to continue. He has vowed that he will never father a child himself, not if somebody has to die for that child.

Veldrys has dedicated much of his time to the improvement of his skill as a healer and the art of Morphing. He is convinced that there must be a way to save his race, that magic might be the answer.

On top of that he is a fervent follower of Viratas, the god of blood and wishes to become a priest. Unlike certain followers of Viratas the Symenestra has slowly come to consider all races equal. As far as he is concerned, everybody that bears blood is worth the same.

History: Veldrys was born as the first child of Velveryn, a merchant of some wealth, and his wife Soraya, a weaver. His mother disapproved of using surrogates. She believed in keeping the bloodline pure, even if it meant her own death. As far as she was concerned, giving her life for a child would be worth it. Besides, there was the vague hope that the Symenestra would become immune to the poison of their children in time. She thought that she could contribute to it by sacrificing herself.

Soraya died mere hours after giving birth to Veldrys, her first and only child. The boy was raised by his father and his aging grandmother. The first years of his life were pleasant. Since it was unlikely that there would be any more sons, Veldrys was spoilt. He was a curious child who liked to explore, and he was especially interested in the traders that visited Kalinor. From one of them he learned about herbs and how to use them.

Velveryn remarried only a few years after Soraya’s death. Sanura, his second wife, was not as traditional as his first wife had been and agreed to using a surrogate to birth her children. Two human women were captured within three years. Each of them gave birth to a girl. While Veldrys never met his older sister’s surrogate and was unaware of what the Harvest really meant, accepting the involvement of another woman in the birth of his siblings with childlike innocence, he met his younger sister’s surrogate.

He stumbled across the luxurious prison where the human woman was kept quite by chance and experienced another side of his race that he had not been aware of before. He talked to her – and then, one day, she was gone without a trace. The experience changed him forever. It was then that he began to question the ways of his race. He had found out about the Harvest long before his Web had intended it, in a way that his father had never wanted him to find out.

Veldrys father had intended for him to follow in his footsteps, but after the meeting with the surrogate Veldrys had decided that he wanted to be a healer. He became an apprentice at the Purging and worked under Hellebore. After a few years the young man grew restless however. The surrogates and especially the traders made him curious about the world above.

He went to Lhavit for a while when he was eighteen and met a halfblood by the name of Seven. He didn’t particularly like the boy at first, but in the course of their meeting he came to the realization that Seven was not unlike him, that he was not an inferior being. Their meeting resulted in a brief romance and the realization that he didn’t only love women, but also men. Besides that, it was also the beginning of a true change of mind regarding the other races.

Eventually Veldrys returned to Kalinor to resume his duties at the Purging however. He spent three more years there before the pressure from his family simply became too much. He decided to leave again, this time for longer – or maybe forever, half convinced that a solution to his people’s problem could be found on the surface.
