He thought more about the equation at hand. Yes, there could be more done to it to make what he is after even better… Watching the class, though he doubted they could figure something else. They may be considered some of the best Alchemy students thus far, but they have a long way to go. Ray made sure they knew that. He made sure just because the students are in class that they don’t get a fat head. He made sure that each and every one of them will be great alchemists.

This class had potential, and even though it pained Ray to admit it this was true, if nothing else. Getting up from his formula he watched the students preform the transmutations. Spying one who is not concentrating just enough he calmly walked up to the circle and put his wounded hand on the circle, stabilizing the reaction, ”Concentrate, you.” he corrected the student manually smoothing out the flow going around the circle. He could feel the energy being taken ahold of by the girl, ”Good.” he said gradually releasing his mental control over the flux of energy, slowly retracting it until the girl had full control over it once more. He did not need any more botched experiments. No, he had already lost one. Taking his hand off the circle he walked away to examine the other circles. They all seemed to be doing great.

”Now class,” he stated, walking around, his hands held behind his back, ”When you are finished please leave your notes and observations with me. Leave the product of the transmutation where it is because you do not have the proper safety equipment to handle the substance.” with that he took a seat again at the head of the class. He turned and simply just watched. They all were busy finishing their experiments and writing their last notes, ”Oh, and please.” he said a word that barely came out of his mouth, ”write which circle you used so I can accurately judge your performance.” he nodded smiling the circles have been numbered before the experiment. Can anything be more perfect?

With that papers came filing in and students left the class one by one having had their lesson completed, ”Don’t forget about class in three days” he called to them as they made their way out. Soon the class was empty except for his stack of papers, the five samples of his alchemical substance, and the nuit himself. Sighing to himself he looked over the notes, the observations, reading words on the feeling of the alchemical flow, of how the substance was before and after. Novices. Was all he could think as he read over the notes. If that is how they were taught to take notes then he would have to give them a wakeup call. ”Trash” he said discarding one paper to the floor, ”trash” he passed judgment on another paper, ”Trash” he said letting another paper fall to the floor, ”Trash” he threw the other one, ”Trash” he ripped the last one in half. All of them were fools.

In Rays mind they have already failed. Though that is what he gets for asking students to do the transmutations for him. Sighing, he got up, leaving the papers where they were, he picked up the gloves which the university provided and put them on. He would have to clean this stuff up. Grabbing the bag which he was provided too he scooped up the clay-like substance, the shields on the gloves glowing slightly as it blocked against the corrosive element of symenstra venom.

Placing the stuff in a bag he went along the room, but he noticed that the student he yelled at earlier left the room without getting his stuff. He could use that to his advantage. Remembering his note he wrote out earlier he smiled, this was going to be perfect. He could use the fool as the one who ‘stole the substance out of his office.’ And he could plant some of it within the guys stuff. He knew the student wouldn’t be back as long as Ray is here, and so the nuit had all the time he needed. No need to rush things, after all, it is when one rushes that they get sloppy.

Setting the bag down on a nearby table, he collected the students books and walked out of the room, going to his office. Yes, he would make sure this one would never step foot in an alchemy lab again. That is a promise.

Getting to his office he hurriedly set the books on his desk, before opening a drawer and shoving them in there for safe keeping. With that, he grabbed his key and locked the drawer. No one will get in there until absolutely necessary. Feeling safe, he walked out of his office and back to the golden room. It was time to put his plan into action.

Grabbing the bag, with gloves still on, he made his way through the university dodging glances and stares. A student even came up to him with a question, but he waved him away, ”Not now…” and soon he found the place he was looking for. The Archives building. Ray had been watching this place for a while now, walking by it at various times, and he knew the time at which the posted guards at the door switched. This allowed about a chime of time with the doors unguarded. It was this time that the mage arrived. Wasting no time he dipped his hand into the bag and started smearing it over the glyphed doors. The strange symbols of power will not stand a chance to his science. He rubbed the stuff in and spread it thin as to make it barely noticeable. Not that if it was noted that anyone could do something about it without getting burned… He bet that after this act, the guard will increase and the place would become even more secure. So he only had one chance, tonight, to get whatever secret that this place was hiding.

His time was up. The guards were coming back. Closing the bag, his hand was placed on the heavy doors when the guards returned. Withdrawing his hand he looked at each of them as they ushered him away from the door, though that hardly mattered now. What was done was done. Taking his bag with him he calmly walked away. Now all that he needed to do was wait.

Back to his office he unlocked the drawer and took out the books, and set them on his desk. The kid would come for his books sooner or later. All he had to do was wait… and wait he did. Soon enough, a couple bells later, there would be a knock at his door and lone behold, the student came crawling back in. Ray eyed him, ”You forgot your books.” he said, shoving them towards one end of the desk, ”You also forgot to take your failure.” he told him pushing the shielded bag towards the student, ”I overreacted.” he apologized, ”I just don’t like to see failure.” he told him as the student collected his things, and even took the bag. Ray had took the liberty to fill the bag with the left over clay over the transmuted substance. The clay he gave the student was a slight jest, nuit humor, for the boys reaction didn’t achieve a thing. ”Please try harder next time and I wont lose it again. Do we have a deal?” he asked offering his hand forward. The student nodded and shook it and then hurriedly left the room.

Good. ”Fool,” he said as the boy left. He fell right into the plan. He was sure, and has heard, the students interest into the archive building. It was perfect. The boy will be driven by curiosity. Perfect motive. Now then, he had something to do. Taking the letter from the folds of his cloak he calmly walked again through the university until he arrived at Administration Office. Going up to the Secretary stationed there he placed the letter at her desk, ”Deliver this to the Head of the Department of Alchemy. Its urgent.” with that he left, confident that he would be contacted by the person after the letter was read. He made it oh so convincing. Things were set into motion, and a change will occur. That much is sure.

---

Darkness fell and the next part of his act would be initiated. Using the shadows of night to his advantage he crept back to the Archives building. He was a little behind schedule… Taking a rock he tossed it at one of the guards. When the rock made contact both of them went to investigate where the rock came from. Staying close to the wall the shadows hid him from the guards sight, as they passed him he made his way into the building. By now the alchemical substance had burned a nice hole into the door allowing him entrance. What would he find here?

It was funny… The best way to fight magic was with magic. The Alchemist noted how well his substance had gotten through the usually impossible to get through doors. It was a matter of time. How he loved the delightful qualities of the Symenestra. Now was the time to uncover the truth, but again he had no time. He had to get in and out.

Taking a look around, it was dark, but the mage could still make his way around, with some effort. He should have brought a torch… Though planning aside he reminded himself he only had a limited amount of time in this place. Shuffling though the dark place he ran into something and tripped over it. Sprawling on the floor the nuit fell, not trying to catch himself that would only do more damage to his precious body. Laying there for a while, the crash must have been heard from the outside for he heard one of the guards call into the place, ”Anyone there?” before walking in. He could see a dull torch light with the guard as he walked.

Was this it? Was he going to be caught here? What would happen to him? Scrambling to his hands and feet, he kept close to the ground and crawled across the building. Stupid things being placed in his way. He cursed whatever tripped him. Soon he came to a wall, the guard still looking around, the wizard slowly rose to his feet. There seemed to be a shelf, the faint outlines of objects coming to him now as his eyes got used to the darkness, in the distance. Going over to it, quietly, he carefully examined it, running a hand over the bindings of many books. Just books, he thought, until his hand hit something else. It felt different, even though the gloves. It felt old. Piquing his interest he grabbed ahold of it and took it out of the shelf. Though in his haste, more books than he intended came out and fell to the floor. Alerting the guard ”Who is there?” the guy moved over to Rays location. He had to get out now.

Looking towards the exit, the other guard came in upon hearing his cohort call out. Picking up a book, Ray threw it across the room to bang into something else. The noise alerted the guards that there was someone over there or perhaps multiple people. They went to check it out and Ray took the chance to slink out of the archives room. Fools, falling for the same trick twice.

Hurriedly he ran to his office, his prize in hand. Opening the door he closed it behind him and locked the door. Faint candle light lit the room as he set down what he had apprehended from the ‘scene of the crime’. He looked at it… It looked old, and boy was it old. Parchment, delicate with the touch of time, written in the ancient language. So… the university claimed that nothing pre-val survived. Somehow he knew they lied and now he had proof. How sweet was the world?

His thoughts were racing, his victory, his medal sitting before him on the desk. He knew he couldn’t keep it here, no, this would be too dangerous. He needed a safer place than the university to hide this. Gathering his things, he slid his prize between the folds of his robes, and he made his way out of the university and to his little place within the port city. The little cottage would be far more secure than his office.
