The Dust Bed

Lusa had made coming to Sunberth's graveyard a habit. She wasn't sure why, but humans' penchant for preserving their dead both confused and fascinated her. It made her wonder if anything lingered in the body after death. If nothing was left, why did humans treat their dead this way? Before her time in Sunberth, Lusa had never given thought to the carcasses of dead animals that she came across in the woods; they were just things, objects that no longer had any meaning beyond providing a meal to some carrion-eater. But now, these graves gave her pause. Had she been wrong? Were dead things special, to be saved below the ground?

She sighed. Thinking like this gave her a headache. Another thing that had changed through her association with humans. She no longer simply acted on pure instinct, and often had confusing and complicated thoughts. She wasn't sure if she liked it or not.

She pulled a snack from her bag, not finding anything strange about having a picnic in a graveyard. She had bought quite a feast at the market today, which had lightened her purse quite a bit, but sometimes she couldn't help but to treat herself. Enjoying a delicious bite of creamy, fresh farmer's cheese, she sat down on a grave, leaning comfortably against the headstone.
