starting with a lab?

Is this correct?

If you start as a "competent" alchemist, it says you "either work for a very skilled master or own a small laboratory."

All well and good, but even a "simple" magic lab costs 1500 gm, and you don't start with that much, even living on the street. So is a "free" lab just a perk of taking alchemy at 26+ SP at character creation, or is that just wishful thinking? Do you ignore the bit about owning a lab and assume you start as an apprentice?

Hello! Yep that's wishful thinking

There are several ways to circumvent this:

1) Apprentice under an existing player who has a lab
2) if appropriate for your city, apprentice under an NPC with a lab
3) Study or work in University of Zeltiva

Of course, I'm going to self-advertise a bit. The Order of Transcendence will also have labs for use for our members

The skill listing doesn't refer to what you actually OWN. It just means you are skilled enough that you COULD work in your own lab, if you had one. Whereas if you're a novice, you have to work for someone else because you're not skilled enough to work on your own.

So you'd need to find a way to save up the money to get your own lab, but once you did so, you could work it without needing someone else to oversee your work, if you're at 26+Exp.

It WAS pretty much what I figured. As a GM myself, there's no way I'd give that away to start a game. But hey what can it hurt to ask, other than provoking long-term animosity from those who hold my gaming fate in their vindictive hands.

And, damn it, Eridanus, now everyone will think I got my ideas from you!!
