Rain.

Sashi could smell it in the air. It was unusual so far north, where it usually snowed, but the smell was unmistakable. It was going to rain, and they were far from the city. It was almost dark too. But they were so close! Sashi and Kaniel had been tracking an elk, and they were nearly upon it. It's scent was so strong in her nose it was making her mouth water, and her keen ears could hear it as plain as day just on the other side of the rise she was hiding behind. She glanced over at her packmate, who was hiding nearby.

Rain at night in the Northern Reaches was not a good thing to be stuck in. If it didn't snow, it was almost sure to hail. The air was always cold enough for that. Hail was a bad thing, even for a pair of hardy wolves like themselves. They should have not strayed so far from the saftey of the city and the room that had once belong to Kaniel's bondmate and now served as their den of sorts. Sashi wanted to leave the place behind permanently, but for some reason Kaniel stayed. She wouldn't leave him, no matter how much they pretended to dislike each other, but he wasn't ready to leave yet either. So Sashi had to settle for more and more hunts like the one they were now on.

But she should have known better this time. With her old pack she would have been safe. They had a territory, places to go to shelter themselves from harsh weather. But Kaniel and Sashi had no territory, they might have even been in another packs territory for all they knew. As she looked to her packmate there was one question on her mind. Should they go for the kill, or should they leave and seek shelter right away?

Wet Wolves in the Dark (Kaniel)

The damp, heavy feeling in the air that spoke of an impending storm didn't even phase the big wolf. Crouched low between two bushes, all of Kaniel's senses were focused on one thing. Their prey.

Years of living as a human had taught the man to ignore his secondary instincts; as a wolf, the weather meant little. He had his coat with it's many layered still thickened by the winter, and he had his pack... as small as it may be. Sashi was somewhere nearby, he knew, though unaware that she was torn so between giving up or not. Needless to say, he would not be happy to find out her dedication had wavered.

The Elk was just ahead, its deep musk coating the inside of the wolfs nose as he stalked forwards; each paw was set with silent precision, avoiding twigs and loose rocks. Any noise would startle the beast, and Kaniel had lost one too many kills in his day by a misplaced step to be so careless when they were this hungry.

With huge antlers crowning it's head, the buck was pacing slowly from tree to tree, stripping the choicest of plants as he did so, almost as if he didn't have a care in the world. The pricked ears though, and the half rise of the beasts tail was enough to let Kaniel know that the animal was wary, that he'd sensed something nearby. They would have to be quick about it.

There was a rustle to his right, Sashi's lithe form appearing from the shadows of a nearby tree. Kaniel's strange blue gaze caught hers, and held. Neither of them had wanted to give up their Alpha position, but Kaniel had one out in the end; sheer size and strength did have it's benefits. Sashi, however, had more practice in life as a wolf, calling her pack mate a "city pup" by comparison. A flick of his ears backwards against his head, before pricking in the direction of the kill was all the communication that they needed. It was so close. They were going for it.

A few splatters in the canopy above signaled that the rain had come. The Elk lifted his head at the sound, gazing about the area, still suspicious. The shift in the weather made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end, the drop in pressure giving him all the warning he needed.

Kaniel launched himself into the air just as the thunder rolled overhead, the thud of his heavy paws covered by the deep basso rumbling of the clouds. The Elk didn't even stand a chance. It only took a few long strides to cover the gap between wolf and beast, all the power in his hind legs bunching as he prepared to spring. Luckily the ground hadn't yet become saturated, giving Kaniel's paws the resistance they needed to push off.

Having seen the wolf only a few strides into the attack, the buck tried to make a run for it, wheeling on his hind and prepairing to vault off into the forest. Kaniel had been ready, however, using the power of his leap to propel further than he would have needed to go had the beast not moved. The tactic worked, a scream wrenching the air only to be covered by another roll of thunder as the big white and silver wolf collided with the Elks massive, antlered head.

Using his body weight to bring the creature off balance, Kaniel kept it busy and staggering as he waited for Sashi to join. This couldn't be done without teamwork.

Wet Wolves in the Dark (Kaniel)

Sashi may have had her doubts about the weather, but she wasn't going to abandon her pack mate. Plus, she was hungry. When Kaniel launched the attack, Sashi was right behind him. The larger wolf hit the elk first, staggering it, but the beast did not go down. Sashi wouldn't have expected it to so easily anyway. The elk tried to run away but Sashi blocked it's path, growling and snapping furiously more to keep it at bay than to do any harm. She knew Kaniel would take care of the rest.

The elk was distracted long enough for Kaniel to attack again if he wanted, and when he did, Sashi came forward as well. The black wolf darted forward and snapped down on the elk's hind leg as it tried to fend Kaniel off and kicked in pain, but Sashi held on tight. She was jerked about, but her jaws wouldn't let go, and the elk even tried turning its head to gore her with its antlers but it couldn't reach. It had another threat to deal with anyway. Kaniel was at its front, and Sashi had its leg. There was nowhere for it to run.

Sashi waited for Kaniel to make his move, doing her best to hang on to the thrashing limb as the elk fought to get her off. It's fighting only made things worse for it, and with every thrash Sashi's teeth tore its leg more and more.

The rain around them was coming down hard by then, but there was no hail yet. Maybe they would get lucky and just get a little wet. Maybe the weather would be nothing to worry about, but Sashi could not help recalling the last time she'd been stuck in a thunderstorm. The balls of ice that rained down from the sky were painful, even through her thick coat, and one large one had even injured a pack mate. Sashi did not want to be caught in such a storm again.
