Day Terrors? (Noaru)

6th of Fall, 512AV

He was trying to cut his hair and failing. Miserably. His eating knife was nowhere near as sharp as he needed it to be and he could hold his mirror and look where he was cutting. Not to mention he had to literally saw at his hair to make a few measly strands break. And to remind him of his failing efforts he felt the prick of the blade dig into his scalp again. Really, it was just getting out of hand and the female disguise had to go. He would keep the dress for later but he needed to invest in a wig. Post haste.

Flinging the knife at the dock he was amazed how quite it could be compared to during the day (and that the knife didn’t slid off) where he couldn’t even breath near it for fear of someone accusing him of stealing their air. Now it was empty, quiet and his toes brushed just in the water. He liked it but it was a pity the sun wasn’t up a bit more. He liked to watch it rise he just hoped he didn’t get trampled by those who would be waking up soon.

It wasn’t worth trying to cut his hair for. Shoving his hair back, Matthaus wandered over to pick up his knife and stick it back into his backpack. Deft fingers closed off the tie and slung it over his shoulder. Time to head back to his room, curtsey of the school. He wondered how long it would take before someone actually question his age or where he got his monies from so he tried to avoid the school dorm as much as possible.

Scurrying off the docks Matthaus crept close to the buildings and began to slunk his way back to the dorm, inwardly sulking about his lack of success in cutting his hair. As he skulked the city slowly woke up and those that had been awake during the odd hours began to head back in, the stone lighting up and sounds that weren’t there previously beginning to sound.

He had waited too long, he was not nearly familiar enough with the city to make it back to the dorm without asking several people for directions. he really needed to get a map.

''.........''

Noaru was silent as he plotted nefarious plans of doom and destruction! He was quite pleased was his actions up until now, he felt like he should move on from this city and venture off into another since he has spent so much time here and has made one true companion. The spirit thought of these things while floating just inches off of the ground, he was dissatisfied with things being so quiet! The lurking spirit notices a small boy walking alone, instinctively he follows [...blink...] he disappears reappearing behind the young lad, it was interesting for him to see a ''youngster'' so seemingly care free since these were the types he haunted at times.

Noaru wasn't going to make his presence known just yet, he was going to wait patiently for the right moment to appear...

Matthaus decided he was lost and at first open shop he was buying a map of the city because this was ridiculous. Looking back he thought about just going back to the docks but that didn’t seem like a good idea either. Scrubbing a hand over his face he peeked into his sack, at least he had everything he needed with him, he could just get to work but that would mean putting on the dress again…

Maybe he could just pay a barber. It would be less painful.

But then he’d have to find the barber.

Sighing he pulled his cloak tight around him but he didn’t get very far, a heavy hand landed on his shoulder. His entire body tensed but he didn’t flee even if his entire body itched to simply run, rather he turned to the man. He wasn’t sure what he expected but he didn’t expect someone who looked so…so…cheerful.

“Can I help you?”

“You looked lost, trying to find your parents?”

“No, just waiting for them here.”

The man nodded and gave some simple statement about how he was making sure and moseyed off. Matthaus wondered if everyone in this city was always so helpful or if they were just nosey. Deciding he was getting nowhere he tried to go back the way he came but back the way he came was not the docks. In fact, it was just a bunch of alleys and housing.

This morning was turning out to be quiet fun. He should have just asked the man for directions. “Anybody have a map?”

''I can lead you to where you need to go, little one.''

The Noaru's voice made its appearance before he actually did: a black cloud of soulmist appears just ten meters away in-front of Matthaus, one could say that this cloud resembled a fiery flame in its movements; it was violent and wild yet calm in nature. The cloud of soulmist then began to take up a more definite shape, changing into a form similar to that of some four legged animal of some sort; it wasn't clear to what exactly it was changing to until some seconds pass. Noaru stood before Matthaus in his signature form: a large black forty-five inches tall seven-foot long hound, Noaru was silently surprised to see such a young face out and about at this time but of course he was more interested in the young ones reaction in seeing such a large spirit randomly appear out of nowhere.

There was an eerie silence that accompanied the area local animals and people avoided the small vicinity that Noaru vacated, it gave the area a unique feel of horror that only Noaru could exert.

Little one? Was the man back? But Matthaus didn’t need to turn to see where the voice came from, rather the shadows moved or so it seemed. A colored wind that was taking shape, since when did wind take shape? He first thought was magic and a fear crept in him because he remembered hearing whispers of magic’s that sent people into oblivion, literally.

Fight or flight.

The more substantial the image became the more reasonable flight seemed. But there was no way a dog could be that big. It was impossible. Entirely. Which explained everything, rationally he had to be dreaming. He had knocked himself unconscious at the docks. Or drowned. Or stabbed out something important in his skull. Yes, that was it.

“I—“ But it came out as a squeak that knocked some sort of sense into Matthaus. Showing fear so openly meant you were easy pickings…but from what? Easy pickings from his imagination? Clenching his fingers that had started to wobble he took a step forward. Only one. So that he was where he had been standing before and not moving closer, he was pretty sure even another Djed Storm couldn’t convince him to do that. “You are a talking dog.”

Well, that was eloquent. Way to not show fear. Or stupidity.

Taking a breather he tried again but nothing seemed to want to come out. Weren’t nightmares supposed to happen at night? And what was he? Seven?

“You would be willing to…escort me home then?”

His voice rose and fell awkwardly but he felt a tiny twinge of pleasure that he hadn’t simply turned and fled. No, it was perfectly fine to talk to the giant dog he was clearly imagining. Yes. Perfectly fine.

''I could be a talking dog or just a figment of your imagination...''

The spirit said almost teasingly, he turned and began to walk away from the young lady, gesturing Matthaus with his head to follow him, he was going to listen to what his new companion had to say while walking since walking and talking was the new thing with humans. The spirit didn't want to bore the new soul he had recently just discovered and decided maybe a casual walk would suffice;though, he was unsure if he should be fully ''materialized'' in the open not to many people can handle seeing a spiritual entity of his size roaming around in broad daylight, he would have to take scenic routes to avoid hysterical fits of fear and panic.

''May I know your name and where your home is located? I know these are personal questions but I must know these two major things in order to aid you.''

The spirit was despite his creepy appearance quite proper and calm, something that one would not expect from appearances only but you should not based an opinion on appearances alone, should you?

“I’d prefer if you were but somehow I doubt I should be so lucky.” Because there was a high chance said talking dog would eat him. Slowly. He really hated having an imagination at times like this, it always made reality so much worse…as if it needed help! The figure wasn’t even solid, like some sort of mist even if he could fight there was nothing to attack. Steeling himself he lurched forward like a child who had just learned to run before backing up rapidly, “Actually I was wanting to get my hair cut.”

To him that sounded a lot like: ‘please don’t eat me.’

Clearing his throat he spoke lower to try and mask his squeak, deciding that if he looked down at his feet he could move forwards.

“I do not have a home…per se. I sleep here and there, wherever is needed.” Matthaus licked his lips, “And my name is Jared, may I inquire as to your speci--name?”

There.

That sounded much better. Now all he had to do was look up and—when did he get so close? He couldn’t even feel any body heat coming from the other, no sound of breathing, no…anything. That was comforting. And he was acting like a child! A child afraid of thunder, he had nothing to fear, nothing! If the being wish to hack him into bits he would have done so. Things would be fine.

Or he was being lulled into a false sense of security…really this was just ridiculous.

''I see you have a sense of humor... Heh, I like that in a human; my name is Noaru and may I ask where you are currently living now, if you still remain there?''

The spirit stops and turns to face Matthaus, he had an unsure look on his face, he wasn't certain of which turn he should take! There the street leading straight into a crowd of people and one turn on the left and one turn on the right each of the side streets were looking rather good but first he had to confirm one thing and that was where his companion did live, he had to make sure that this kid wasn't a spiritist that was leading him to his doom!

The spirit could feel that there was something odd about Matthaus, he could tell by his voice that he was probably frightened by him. Noaru believed that maybe he should have taken a more human appearance.

“A…pleasure.”

He was beginning to see that maybe this wasn’t a figment of his imagination, mostly absolutely not. But if that were the case what magic was it? Was someone controlling it from somewhere he couldn’t see? It had even called him human so obviously it was not. Either way it seemed more curious than anything, helpful even. Too helpful perhaps but at least it was trying to crunch him between his very large and very terrifying looking mouth…yet.

There he went again. Matthaus frowned and tried to squish his child-like fear. Mentally shoving it down deep within him. Somewhere he couldn’t reach it and it wouldn’t bother him. Swallowing what seemed to be a scream lodged in his throat he finally was able to look the beast in the eye and if he knees knocked a bit, well, there was no one there to see.

“I live where ever my coin can pay. No permanent residence, I have no friends so no one need look for me.” It was a statement of fact and subtle warning, if he dared. Which he did. Terrifying or not he didn’t like to be found, you could be caught unawares then and that was a terrible thing indeed. “Can anyone see you?”

Watching the beast turn away he was a little curious now, if he hadn’t gone bonkers then maybe it wouldn’t be a good idea to go strolling through the city. Or maybe it would. No one would bother him if they thought the…thing, whatever it was, would give him a fake form of protection without realizing it. Cautiously he stepped closer once more, his gaze roving over the creature with a nervous twitch.

“Perhaps you would be willing to escort me to the barber?”

''They could see me, if they truly wanted to but then it would be their fear that compels that individual into ignoring me or cause them to panic. I'll escort you to the barber as you seem more like a ''living-ghost'' to me: a quality that I like!''

The spirit began to move on, taking the left turn that he intended to take in order to avoid the crowds of people ahead, he didn't want to cause a stir, he wanted his presence to be a bit symbolic: a kind of presence that could be mentioned in a story or something! Noaru had a slight grin upon his face, revealing those dreadful teeth of his, he would probably be able to do all sorts of things at the barber and get away with it since not to many seem to be spiritists but it was always good to be careful. It didn't take long before someone looking from their window see's him walking through the alley way, they instinctively look way and close their window in order to deny what they had seen--a typical thing that some would do in order to reject fear.

''Well then Jared, you must at least have some purpose for being alone in this city and at such a young age.''
