Two knights one spar. (Imass)

Postby Markus Andres on September 1st, 2012, 4:42 am

Summer 82. 512 AV.

Markus could feel the guilt and shame burn within him as he watched the city of Zeltiva. A city he had not seen for a decade. Somewhere inside this city, his family lived. A family he had not seen for just as long. Still. He did not make a move to go visit them. Still had not forgiven them for sending him off to the knights. It was strange. He could not picture a life without the knights. He did not want to picture a life outside the knights. But still. He hated them for abandoning him. His emotions were conflicted to say the least. The house he stood in front of had been the one he had spent the first decade of his life in. Same streets he had played and had fun in he stood on now. But as he stood before the house. Contemplating if he should enter it or not. See if any of them had survived the storm. Markus let out a low whistling sigh as he turned away from the house.

He could not handle it right now. His goal was to assist the knights. Not spend time with his family. Yes. That was the excuse he used. He knew he was just avoiding the confrontation. Avoiding the emotional trauma. But he did not care. He turned and left the street. His heart still felt heavy as he walked away. He had no real goal in mind as he wandered. Somehow he ended up in the camp. He looked around and saw knights and squires walking about. Some looked as much without a purpose as him, others looked determined in their walk. Some of them coughed a little, a summer cold perhaps. Probably nothing serious.

He thought about the night before. With Bob and ser Imass. It brought a smile to his lips. With that, he knew what he could do. Find Imass and ask if he was up for some practise. Training always managed to divert his thoughts from things he did not want to think about. This was exactly one of those things. He went for his sleeping area. He only carried his sword on him, not his shield. He wore the armor of the knights. Mainly because if he had come to his father, he wanted him to see what Markus had become. He found his tent and grabbed his shield and dagger he sheathed in the empty spot by his left side.

Now he just had to find Imass. Should not be hard to find a six and a half feet tall blue Akalak. He would most likely be in the camp of some sorts. Took Markus several chimes before he found the Akalak. Markus raised his hand and waved.

"Ser Imass! My friend." He said loudly and with a wide smile. "I hope you are well. What do you say we have a little friendly sparring exercise?" He offered the knight.

Two knights one spar. (Imass)

Postby Imass on September 1st, 2012, 2:04 pm

Imass was kicking about the camp is quiet distraught. The people of Zeltiva had thoroughly pissed him off yesterday. The argument in the streets, the vile logic of the woman Tock, and the others at the showdown at the gates... they were all too much for him to handle. None of them actually understood him or the Knights. None of those bloody scholars understood real life. They filled their heads with books and information in search for truth, but nothing compared to the factuality of the sword. The sword was the ultimate, unbiased conversation. It was the undeniable truth. Imass wandered why these "nons" couldn't understand. How could they understand?

"Combat," Imass said under his breath, rubbing his eyebrows, "Mortal combat. That is the answer. They must actually experience it to understand." The Scholar's governed their lives by books and complex theories; logic analysis was their cornerstone about everything. Mortal combat had a tinge of reasoning and logic on the surface, but the true nature of fighting was in the intangible stuff. The unspoken words that could only be spoken through the sword. It was emotion and instinct, not calculations and investigation. It was something felt deep in one's heart, not something logically discernible.

Imass looked to his right and to his left. He scanned the Knights and Squires solemnly. The Akalak knew without a doubt that each one of them would lay their life down for each other. An overwhelming feeling of belonging was present in the camp. His brothers and sisters in arms would have his back no matter what. This feeling was true love; it was caritas. Despite everything that had transpired the day before, he knew he could count on his brothers to have his back. The comradery between soldiers was a bond thicker than blood. There was something special between the Knights. It was an unbreakable, silent bond that filled each man with the ultimate sense of belonging. It was the source of the order's strength. It was a deeply ingrained faith that Yahal himself had blessed the knightly order with. Looking around he knew deep down that THIS was the truth in life, not some dusty book written by an anti-social bastard. This was the warrior’s life and someday the Zeltivan's would understand that.

Markus Andres called out to Imass and broke his train of thought. The Akalak warrior only smiled though, he had no reason to be sad. In fact, he wanted nothing more than to release some frustration by training. Walking up to his comrade he clasped arms and looked him in the eyes. It seems that his friend too had been in deep thought about someone or something "Is that even a question Markus? Of course I want to train! I shall fetch the wooden training weapons! Meet me on the foyer!"

~*~

Imass called out to Markus, "Let's spar!"

Taking his wooden sword in hand and holding his wooden shield close to his heart Imass got into his fighting stance. His feet were planted firmly at a fifteen degree angle to Markus's body (his shoulders where square though). His large shield covered his whole left flank from knee cap to head; he held it at his side, not his front. His broadsword was held pointed straight towards the sky. He even revealed the flat of his blade to Markus. He tucked in his sword arm strongly so that when the moment of attack came he would hopefully be quicker and faster than his opponent. Imass began to advance like a slow moving tower. The Knight would play disciplined for it was the only way to stand a chance against a talented swordsman like Markus Andres.

Two knights one spar. (Imass)

Postby Markus Andres on October 4th, 2012, 4:54 am

Markus was pleased to find the fellow knight eager to spar. Even though, Markus could see something was bothering the man. Markus always found that a good spar solved most problems and cleared the mind. Hence, his own eagerness to spar.

"Excellent! I will be there!"

:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:

"Let us."

His response short and curt. Further words were not needed. He had a smile plastered on his face. For he had truly looked forward to this ever since meeting the knight for the first time. Circumstances just made things better. He could burn off excess energy and get to know ser Imass better. Markus had opted for his own metal shield, rather than one of wood. His stance mirrored the Akalak. Left leg leading. Shield a little more centeret than he. But with the left leg leading and body at an angle, that meant not as much. That shield was huge though. Much like when he had faced off against Dimitri's towershield. He would just have to find a way around that.

Markus focus was not entirely upon the Akalak. His focus was inwards. On the inner pathways. Invisible to the naked, human, eye. For a fact that few people knew, Markus was not ordinary. He possessed magic. He was still very much green to the arts. But he was improving, although at an extraordinary slow rate. It had gotten easier to locate the power. But harnessing it was always a hassle. But just touching a speck of the raw power, told him it was worth anything. No matter the hassle involved. He had found, that drawing strength from the ideal of Wysar, from his own discipline often helped him find it quicker.

Imass was advancing. Fortunately he advanced slowly, giving Markus time. Markus stood his ground. Eyes focused on the physically imposing Akalak. Lesser men would have shied away from fighting a man of such stature. Markus didn't, he enjoyed the challenge of fighting larger opponents. Markus felt the speck respond. Finally react to his constant attention and seeking. Perhaps it could feel his excitement? The idea intrigued Markus. The next part was much more requiring of his full focus. Enslaving the wild power to his will and have it do as he demanded. He could feel the raw power move through his body. To Markus, it seemed chaotic how the energy moved. Almost as if it had no purpose. He would give it purpose. Give it direction. He pushed what he could muster into his thighs. Large muscles. Easy to direct energy to. His smile got strained as he bit his teeth together hard. Keep his focus and not lose himself to the euphoria that always accompanied his use of the Flux.

For when Imass came sufficiently close, Markus would suddenly unleash the power. Rather than direct his power forward, Markus had thought a little further than a mindless charge. He would be marginally faster than normally, but in combat, margins mattered. He would instead sidestep to his right. Get on the knight's side. Use the extra speed to throw him off.

Like most of Markus' moves, there was some sort of misdirection involved. In this case, the entire side step was the misdirection. Give Imass the idea he would try and use his speed to get by the shield. He was trying his best to keep the djed-fuel going to his legs as he moved. But he would suddenly stop. He managed to keep the Flux going for a moment longer. His entire body stopping and taking a step the other direction. That moment of extra flux had been enough. The wooden blade would swing down from the right at an angle. Trying to slip above his opponent's shield and get him in the side of his head. Unfortunately, Markus had yet to learn how to effectively direct the flux from one part of his body to the next. So Imass had to content with Markus' swing only being his regular sized bite. Except the wood was much quicker than the regular bastard he carried. Lighter weight, made for quicker swings.

This was roughly to gauge his opponent's skill. Could he predict Markus' movements. How was his defence contra offence. Many things to be left answered. He kept in mind not to overdo the swing, or he would be leaving his centre and right flank too exposed.

Two knights one spar. (Imass)

Postby Imass on October 16th, 2012, 1:47 am

Edging closer, Imass readied himself for contact with Markus Andres. As he advanced he was sure to keep his base footwork. As any true heavy infantry man, he would avoid crossing his feet and would always try to position himself parallel to his opponent. He drew an imaginary line with his mind’s eye to guide his footsteps during the battle. Playing the spar defensive, Imass' goal was to keep Markus on his left flank while he bashed the shyte out of him. The Akalak was willing to bet he could strong arm a victory. Imass knew already that trying to cross blades with Markus would prove difficult; Andres was an excellent swordsman, but the Akalak meant to win this spar, not practice sword strokes. Thus, the spar started. From here on out, Imass would act on instinct and training. It was imperative he did not hesitate a moment.

Markus opened with a sidestep to the left. 'Perfect,' Imass thought. His opponent had stepped exactly where he wanted him to go. The Akalak reacted by pounding his leading foot on the floor twice, advancing nearly into the human's frame. His shield arm already cocked at his heart, so he punched as hard as he possibly could use his hips and strong shoulder muscles. Imass aimed for Markus' right shoulder, but he missed sorely... Andres had used the side step as a misdirection to lure Imass out and it worked. The Zealot felt a stinging slap as the wooden sword hit him in the ear. Markus had hit him hard for a human, well harder than he was accustomed to. Should have Imass been wearing a helm though, the attack would have been much less devasting.

Being slapped on the side of the head woke Imass up though and his natural Akalak warrior instinct kicked in. Swinging his wooden broadsword with three hundred pounds of fury, the brawny man tried to give Markus a hard lick. The Knight aimed at the at Markus right shoulder in attempt to get the man to cross his shield and disengage. Should Markus cross his shield, Imass would respond with a shield bash aimed at the man's head.

Regardless though, Imass would stand his ground and pivot rather than dance. Imass would fight like a stalwart shields man and would not give up any ground. If Markus wanted to fight him, he would have to play Imass at his own game or deceive him. Although the Zealot wasn't the best swordsman, he was disciplined and stood his ground.

Two knights one spar. (Imass)

He connected squarely with the physically larger knight. Markus was surprised that the knight had not foreseen that attack. His shield-...play might not be up to par with his sword play. But he knew how to take a blow, that much was certain. Markus saw the counter attack. Markus had never been one for retreating when there was an advantage to be had. His left foot stepped out to the side. His right foot slid back. Changing his stance and placing the shield so it would be taking the blunt of Imass' force directly. Markus' sword arm moved on the inside of his own shield. Ready to flick his wrist with another strike at Imass' now completely unguarded right side.

It was an advanced manoeuvre, one that Markus had not yet completely mastered. His instinctive use and timing was spot on. But his application of it had been wrong. His stance was not strong enough to take a heavy strike like that.

Markus realized this a moment too late. As he felt the power behind Imass swing strike directly on his shield and Markus felt it get pushed back. Throwing him off balance as a consequence. Rather than try and fight it, Markus instinctively leapt away from the Akalakian knight. Create space for him to manoeuvre on. Despite his failure there was a smile on Markus lips. He enjoyed sparring. It was a great way to relieve stress and bottled up tensions.

"Strong attack."

Markus studied Imass. It would appear the knight wasn't planning on going on the offence. Markus had no qualms with this, he did prefer the aggressive fighting style. Markus took a deep breath and mentally started messing around with his own djed streams. His smile became a little strained as his focus increased. He needed to master that blasted magic. His focus was simple. Redirect the djed into his core muscles. Start with a strong opening attack. Stress Imass' defence. Exploit any gap that was created.

Markus felt the energy get moved. Slowly at first, but as he got the feeling right, more followed. It was a good thing Imass had chosen the defensive path. The powerful djed move into his core muscles of the hips. He did not waste a moment. Not give the euphoria time to mess with his focus. Markus stepped into range. Felt his powerful legs respond with enhanced strength. It was not much. But every bit helped. The toes of his feet dug into the ground as he made a backhanded swing at Imass upper torso. His core muscles enhanced made the strike a bit faster and equally more powerful.

Two knights one spar. (Imass)

Postby Imass on October 29th, 2012, 12:47 am

Ser Imass was not as skilled swordsman as Ser Markus, but he was no incompetent hedge knight either. He was an Akalak warrior from Riverfall and fighting was the fluid that filled the blood in his veins. He lived to show his Faith in the Windoak through demonstrable acts of fighting.

Slamming his broadswords down he caught his opponent's shield. Vibrations went up his arm and into his shoulder. He almost dropped the basketgrip. Ser Imass pushed with all his might, then swung his shield mishappenly towards his opponents head. It was too late though, Ser Markus release and leapt backwards.

The Akalak Knight would not chase. Resetting his footwork, he held his shield close to his heart and gripped his sword stronger. His footwork exactly like before. Imass's face was grim and wide eyed. Markus's was more easy going and calm. However, both Knights had a smile on their face in the rushes of fighting. They were both enjoying it.

"Quick hips," Imass responded to Ser Markus. The Akalak was referring to the first misdirection, which fooled Imass. Even now he could still feel the burn and ringing from the slap.

Both men took a moment to breath, then they were at it again. Ser Imass stood in his stance, feet shoulder width apart and moving. He was in a defensive stance, but he was fluid, agile, and powerful all the same. Ser Imass bounced softly on his hips, always moving, so that he may turn his foot to block any attacks or produce a powerful offense. The Akalak remembered his unarmed and lakan training as a child. He remembered the stances. He remembered the drills in the sun when he was a squire. Ser Imass had a mixed art style, but he used it to his strengths.

Suddenly, Markus attacked with great ferosity in a backhanded swing. His twisted his hips hard and turned fast and strong deliver the blow. Pivoting in his stance, Imass took the attack on from his shield arm's shoulder. He would meet his backhand slash head on. Pivoting on the insoles of his feet, he flipped his hips and legs into his shield arm. He punched his shield aiming right at his sword hand. Imass would meet his blade or his arm with this manuvere, but either way he would stop it.

Ser Imass would not quit there though. Athough he took the defensive stance, he did not plan on being passive. Nay, Imass attacked back. He brought he broadswords overhead and swung directly at Ser Markus's face. He would either need to block or disengage.... Or so Imass prayed. He had no idea what a better swordsman could accomplish.

Two knights one spar. (Imass)

Postby Markus Andres on November 2nd, 2012, 3:19 pm

And equally harder to control - Markus was not surprised to find that Imass had a solid defence in place. But Markus had seen the real goal of Imass' block. He had been unable to do much against it if Imass had had a little longer reach. Markus' timing and counter timing was based on his regular non-augmented speed and strength. Not his flux-fueled speed. It threw his timing off by just a little, but by enough for it to matter. He would have to adapt to the new strength and speed he could wield. But he had no time to think of such things. His eyes were focused on Imass' torso. Keeping the entire of the Akalak in his field of view. . Markus could see Imass' plan of attack. Overhead swing. The aim of that swing would be easy to determine from that range.

He would not disengage. Not this time.

Markus was withdrawing his sword after the failed second strike as he performed this manoeuvre that required some focus to pull off. But he had had the timing right the first time and now he knew Imass' strikes a little better. From watching him the day before and now witnessing them first hand. He slid his left foot out again, he pivoted on the leading foot, moving his right leg behind where his left had just been, his stance became a lot tighter. Less stable, but he did not need to draw strength from the ground in this stance. His body moved a little out of the way for Imass' strike. Every muscle working in unison for this little manoeuvre. Exactly the same manoeuvre as before. Except this time Markus knew that its application was correct. It was not ideal for head on strikes, but these strikes where he could redirect the power, rather than absorb it. It was made for such situations as this. Markus shield raised and Markus felt Imass' heavy strike land on it. But the angle was correct. Rather than stop and absorb the power of the blow, it redirected the blow down the shield and to Markus' right. A place where Markus no longer stood. He pressed the shield against Imass' arm and sword, now he could keep check on it. He would know if the knight was ready to counter attack. This would be the second time he had used this manoeuvre correctly this summer. First time a hapless disgusting Yukman had had its neck cut apart. Even if he could, with this puny wooden sword, that would be an extreme ending to a friendly spar. But he was pleased to find he had advanced to a degree where he could use shield and sword in unison so easily and even cross them for specific strikes.

Markus had taken care to keep his sword and arm concealed the best he could behind the heater shield. Keep his sword arm's movement hidden so he would not anticipate Markus' counter attack. For the right arm crossed in front of his body, inside the shield and struck hard to the Akalak as Markus lowered his shield to keep check on the Akalak's sword arm. It was an odd angle to strike from, but it was not power, but with precision this strike would be dangerous. Best if he aimed for openings in armour, Imass wore no helmet, thus he could easily give him another smack over the head. So that was his aim. Rattle his friend's brain a little more, aim for the man's jaw and cheek with the flat of the blade. Markus had no qualms with causing pain during sparring. It was the best way to learn what to guard and learn to guard it well. It was something he had inherited from his master. Some might consider Markus brutal, sparring was not to be so physical, he didn't care much for such trivial notions. But they were off for war, he could not cause injury, so he could not attempt to dislocate the jaw. That would be detrimental to their cause. Best to just give him a tap powerful enough to remind him, but not enough to dislocate. Probably wouldn't matter much, the knight was tough as steel. All things considered, Markus was probably doing more damage to the sword than the Akalak.

Should the strike be successful or not, Markus would not follow up with another attack, rather he would now disengage and get some room between the two. If he had angered the Akalak, then it would be best to be at a safe distance, a distance where range would work to his advantage.

Two knights one spar. (Imass)

Postby Imass on November 8th, 2012, 5:57 pm

Ser Imass blocked the backhanded swing successfully as he smashed his shield’s rim into the hilt guard of Ser Markus’ bastard sword. His opponent withdrew his sword sliding the flat of his blade across the round shield.

“HUUUF!” the blue knight grunted.

The Akalak did not chase Markus’ sword, but instead brought his overhand swing down aiming at his opponent’s face and body. The swordsman then took the fastest two-step Imass had ever seen. He pivoted on his leading foot and brought his steps both forward and laterally. Ser Imass did not ever think Markus would be able to round him in such a position. How could the Knight be THAT much faster than him?

It was too late for thinking though. Ser Imass’ broadsword caught Markus’ shield at an awkward angle and his blade just slid along the man’s shield. The Blue Knight really didn’t know what to do this in this situation. His whole right flank was about to be exposed and all his weight was leaning forward. He had no advantage on Markus; It was so embarrassing!

The Blue Knight pushed with his sword arm against the metal shield and tried to regain his balance by stepping forward with his left foot. Now occupying the spot were Markus once stood, Ser Imass felt his opponent's shield lower to keep his sword in check.

Imass was fooled by the technique, but he was no novice to combat. He innately knew some sort of strike was incoming. Throwing his shield over his head, Imass slammed the rim into Markus’s shield while keeping his head under the protection. He felt Markus' weapon hit somewhere.

Working on instinct right now, Imass pushed with all his strength. He was aware of Markus’ awkward form, but he was focused on the shield in front of him. Imass knew at any time the shield would disappear only to reveal the edge of a sword. Despite this risk he took his chances anyways and bull rushed the smaller opponent.

oocHey I hope this works, PM me if I got something wrong. Your combat writing was superb, excellent technique you just used! :D

OOC: Not sure how your counter would work, but it matters not! This is not a place for silly arguments, this is a place for combat!

There were limitations and disadvantages to almost anything one did in life. Markus' current stance had a terrible balance, but it was offset by the brief time he remained in it and the opportunity to strike the opponent from an angle he had not expected. The balance part would come back and bite him in the rump right now. Imass' violent response to being outmanoeuvred struck Markus' perilous balance right on. Markus stood his ground. Which in it self was a feat of strength. But his attack was thrown off. That was perhaps the worst part. Rather than giving Imass a reminder across his cheek and jawline, he would get a love-tap on his armoured shoulder. Wood against steel. - Imass would not feel a thing. Perhaps hear the sound, but that was it.

Markus' shield rocked back from the impact and he narrowed his eyes. He was surprised by the turn of events. His immediate thought was to himself. Thinking his assumed flawless timing had been off or if he had hesitated for just long enough that Imass could have struck. But no. Neither of those - He realized through a haze of arrogance. Imass had done it himself. Found a simple way out of the manoeuvre. Strike at Markus' balance. He noted that behind his thick skull. A thing he had to work on with that manoeuvre.

Markus could see Imass was not planning on retreating. The two shared the sentiment that retreat was not the preferable option when it came to combat. Go out in a glaze of glory. But at this close range, his far superior physical size was his advantage. With both shield and sword kept at check. Markus realized Imass only had one weapon available, himself. That brought a thrill through Markus' spine. He pushed off with his left foot. Determined to get out of the way. He had fought Xalet, who had a fondness for kneeing people. Markus did not want to get kneed by the hulking Akalak. His leap send him to his own right. Just in time as the huge Akalak knight slammed into his left side. His shield arm braced for the impact and it held firm, but it still felt like being hit by a freight-caravan. He grit his teeth and did his best to control the force of impact. He landed on his right foot. It pivoted on the ground and the human knight spun counter clockwise, his other foot grazed the ground as he spun. Not slowing his spin, only allowing him more control for when to stop. For in the midst of it all, Markus had gotten his sword free of his shield and was poised for a strike. It was a simple swing. No fancy techniques or such things. Just a vicious swing of the blade at the backside of the Akalak knight. If the knight had not continued his bull rush, instead of the wooden sword at the back of his head. He would be receiving Markus' gauntlet fist instead, for Markus expected the knight to continue the rush to gain some distance, so it would be an unintentional punch. Probably a more potent weapon than the wooden sword.
