[The Great Bazaar] Shiny?

Postby Crypt on December 27th, 2012, 7:23 am

1st of Winter, 512 AV (Afternoon)
Walking through the pathways that criss-crossed the Great Bazaar, Crypt perused the wares of the small stalls on each side with a critical eye, attempting to find something of interest. The afternoon was unusually warm, considering that it was the first day of Winter, the stifling atmosphere of the crowded Great Bazaar intensifying the discomfort Crypt was feeling, but it was better than being inside his small room at the Traveler's Row.

Taking a bite of the apple he had purchased earlier, Crypt scrutinised a particularly-fine carving of a Syliran Knight on horseback that a small child helping to man a stall showed to him before gently patting the young girl on her head, giving her a small orange for her troubles.

Moving on to another stall, Crypt listened in amusement as a middle-aged housewife haggled over the price of a basket of assorted fruits with an elderly female stallkeeper. Both were equally fearsome: the housewife was gesturing animatedly at the fruits and the surrounding stalls, presumably making a comparison between the prices at the other stalls, while the stallkeeper was raising her voice every time her opponent tried to outdo her efforts. The rather entertaining debate already had a small audience, and not a few chuckles were heard when the housewife took out a lethal-looking fish (a mullet, to be exact) and started swinging it around. The stallkeeper then removed a particularly large pineapple from the fruit basket and started making threatening gestures at her foe.

Before things got out of hand, which would draw the attention of the nearby patrol of Syliran Knights, Crypt stepped into the conflict.

"Madam, I'm sure that this is a reasonable price," Crypt began in a smooth and deep tone, raising his hand to forestall the incoming argument, "after all, you'd be hard-pressed to find such a large quantity of fruits going for only a gold miza. This would be enough to feed a family of four for two days, maybe even three. It's Winter, and it'll soon be much harder to obtain fruits."

With his large stature, Crypt was able to intimidate the two women, indirectly forcing them to cease their argument. Lowering their weapons of choice somewhat, the duo continued their... discussion in hushed voices, before the housewife's daughter took the fruit basket from the stall and her mother gave a gold-rimmed coin to the stallkeeper, who pocketed it eagerly and returned to shouting out her wares.

The crowd dispersed, for the spectacle was over. Smiling slightly, Crypt proceeded to what appeared to be a florist's stall, examining the flowers on display.

[The Great Bazaar] Shiny?

Postby Ambrose on December 29th, 2012, 12:58 am

It was the sounds of a minor commotion that drew Ambrose to the fruit stall. By the time he'd arrived, however, any situations of particular interest had dissolved; he encountered only a woman proclaiming quite loudly that she had very fresh fruit.

No matter. He hadn't come for fruit, anyway... though The Other might enjoy something fresh.

He paused. What if The Other was allergic? Oh, nevermind. He would just buy what he had come here for.

He stood for a few moments, smiling gaily, then hesitated.

His brow furrowed. He couldn't quite recall why he had come into the Great Bazaar. Something about a quill...? Or was it nails? He shrugged. If it was really important, he would remember later.

His mind clear of any obligation, he strolled cheerfully past a fish stall that was altogether too smelly and swiftly discovered a much more pleasing scent.

Flowers.

A memory stirred somewhere in the recesses of his brain but was rapidly overpowered by an onslaught of visual and olfactory sensations.

Colors bloomed and burst in front his eyes, bulged and swelled out of slender green stalks and smelled so absolutely divine that he could not resist picking up a flower and pressing it against his nose. He inhaled deeply, his lungs filling with the savory delight.

"White magnolia," a man with a suspicious-looking red beard said. Ambrose eyed the bristly crimson hairs with distrust.

"Uncommon in these parts," red-beard-guy continued. "Five gold mizas full-grown, but I'll give you the seeds for only one."

"I'll buy seven."

The florist's eyes widened. At that, Ambrose quickly shifted tactics.

"I mean, one. I'll buy one. And seeds."

"Seeds are no good if you don't have a pot to grow 'em," red-beard-guy said, holding out his hand for the mizas. Ambrose felt in his shirt for the pouch and dropped a handful of mizas into the florist's palm.

He counted them and raised an eyebrow.

"You've given me here ten mizas."

"For the flower. And seeds. And a flower pot," Ambrose explained.

The man shook his head.

"You've given me too many." He looked Ambrose in the eye, then slightly above. "Do you even know how to grow plants?"

Ambrose felt the man's gaze travel over his horns and suddenly felt self-conscious.

"Of course I know how," he said stubbornly. Then, after considering: "I find that comment insulting!"

The man laughed. "Let me just get you what you need. Here's the change." He handed Ambrose one gold miza and lumbered off to another part of the stall.

Ambrose closed his eyes and smelled the flower.

It is so pretty...

He opened his eyes and suddenly locked eyes with another man at the stall. He froze, feeling very self-aware for the second time that day.

[The Great Bazaar] Shiny?

Picking up a small red rose, Crypt held it briefly to his nose, closing his eyes as he breathed in the mild fragrance that emanated from the flower, before placing it back into its small glass vase. Browsing through a variety of magnolias and wildflowers, Crypt listened to a conversation between a horned man and the stallkeeper.

Hmmm? Another... what do they call them? One of Eridanus' kind here. Rather unusual, but then again this is a strange world at the best of times.

The Ethaefal suddenly looked up, locking eyes with Crypt.

Deciding to be blunt, Crypt smiled and stretched out his hand towards Ambrose, speaking in a deep tone.

"I see that there's another male not afraid of being termed feminine." Crypt chuckled at his small joke, "These flowers are rather interesting, don't you think so? Yes, they'll brighten up your day, freshen the air and bring a smile to a lucky girl's face when you present them to her."

Ambrose, rapidly recovering from his bout of apprehension, brightly shook hands with the man, a good-sized fellow with an odd black eye. It wasn't too unnerving, he decided, watching to see if he could differentiate movement from stasis. Just as swiftly he remembered staring was rude, and focused instead on what the man was saying.

He echoed the man's smile at the joke, and although he wasn't entirely sure what flowers had to do with femininity, Ambrose gathered enough from his remark to have an idea. Masculinity never having been a real concern of his, at least to his known memory, he accepted this mark of effeminacy with grace.

"They are lovely," he agreed warmly as red-beard-guy lowered a small flowerpot into his arms, complete with a packet of seeds and a perky-looking flower. "And they smell like the heavens themselves." A grin dimpled his cheeks. "So you think a woman would like these magnolias? I'm afraid She might be allergic..." He shifted the flowerpot into the crook of his elbow and lifted the magnolia bloom to his nose again, as though it would divulge its allergenic secrets to his nostrils.

And if The Other isn't a woman? Hopefully men in general harbored a secret affection for things of the floral variety.

"I am called Ambrose," he said suddenly, remembering his manners. "After the constellation." Another grin, another set of dimples. "And you are?"
