In battle, things happen quickly. An enemy falls to the floor in mere chimes, and friends and comrades fall to the floor, opened from throat to groin. There was something almost thrilling about the speed in which all things happen when in combat, and Ayatah relished the fast-and-fury of it all. Afterwards, assuming there had been little or not casualties, there was always a sense of reward or accomplishment. Well done, you didn’t die today.

But when the Dhani male had leant so close to her, inhaling that Eypharian scent, everything around Ayatah slowed almost maddeningly. She was absolutely and completely terrified; even after escaping the clutches of her enemy, he had slithered back above her, that disgusting smirk on his reptilian face.

And for once, she had felt utterly hopeless. The half-Eypharian had faced plenty of enemies before. Most recently, she had fought a jungle tiger, accompanying a young Myrian male who had initially been nothing more than a stranger to her - but had ended up meaning so much more. And it was this still-fresh memory that inhabited Ayatah’s mind as the Dhani hovering above her stroked and sniffed at her hair.

The jungle tiger had hung over her, in the same way this Dhani did now, and had dragged it’s huge claws across her stomach, scraping at her skin and opening wounds that had still not healed. The way this snake-shit was touching her was similar, but completely different all at the same time. He was intimidating her, and enjoying every moment of it. It was not physical damage he was hoping to achieve here, it was psychological pain that he wanted to inflict upon Ayatah.

Something made the creature cry out in pain, straightening his back suddenly. For a fuzzy moment, Ayatah was dumbfounded and almost confused. Then something pulled her to feet, and everything fell back into place.

“We need to get to the group.”

Yes, yes we do. But Ayatah did not say anything, just mirrored her friend in beating the earth with her feet as they fled away and back towards the rest of the Myrian patrol team. Another shriek - but it was the name that was called out in mourning that truly shocked Ayatah. Imalla… No…

”We got another one over here!”

Half a dozen dark-skinned faces turning in their direction answered Tinnok’s cry. The two half-breeds might be perceived as less Myrian by the rest of their people, but any differences seemed to dissolve away on the battlefield. The snake creature was the real enemy now, not the half-breeds - not even the half-Dhani. For now, at least, Tinnok and Ayatah would be seen as one of the others. Of course, this acceptance was only temporary, and neither of them would expect any different.

They did not stop running until they reached the centre of the Myrian encampment, and were standing beside the dead fireplace. A new emotion coursed through Ayatah’s veins, and was reflected on her face. Fear and panic had been pushed aside, to give way to a cold and ruthless need to kill and destroy the enemy. Her hands were steady, her eyes cold and narrow. Almost automatically, Ayatah shrugged the longbow off her shoulder and notched an arrow. The lighting was pretty piss poor, but the Dhani was coming ever close, and a half-snake, half-man certainly stood out from the rest of the Myrians.

Focus… She drew back the bowstring, resting her index finger just under her cheekbone. Her thumb reached back, touching the soft feather fletching of the arrow- it was an old habit that Ayatah had done since she was a child. The arrow was released, and it thudded into the Dhani’s trunk, just in the middle of his ribcage. The creature yelled out in pain, stumbling backwards.

”Not a bad shot,” A squat Myrian male stood next to Ayatah, a bemused smile on his face. She recognised him as the pig-ignorant man from earlier that day - or was it yesterday now. ”For an Eypharian, anyway.”

The Duties of a Patrol [Tinnok]

Postby Tinnok on February 9th, 2013, 7:02 pm

She let go of Aya when they both started sprinting, and her lips curled when she heard the cry go up. She had respect for the scout leader, even if she was a bitch to boot, and in the heat of battle, your relationships mattered naught unless you survived to maintain them afterward. Tinnok snaked a couple arrows out of Aya’s quiver, giving her a wink as she felt the blood running hot through her veins. These bleeding snakes were going to get a run for their bikkas if they kept picking off their troops, she would see to that.

The Dhani that had been in pursuit of them seemed to have vanished without a trace. Tin couldn’t hear over the din, and when her bow was drawn arrows peering into the darkness, she couldn’t see anything that gave evidence of him ever having been there. Eyes slid over the horizon to where the scream had come from to see the writing form of a Dhani, surrounded by Myrians. It had a wicked grin on its face, as if it loved the odds of being outnumbered ten to one, ironically a very Myrian trait. What Tinnok couldn’t understand was the look of triumph on her (judging by its breasts was female) face. There was simply no way that the Dhani would leave this clearing alive, but the look of sadistic pleasure that plastered her features spoke of a battle that had already been won. Tinnok seriously wished to eradicate the expression. She stepped forward, taking in a deep breath before letting loose her arrow. It sunk into a section where tale melded into flesh, joining at least a dozen other arrows, Aya’s own plopping into the skin right next to hers. The beast flinched, blood dribbling down her sides, but that look remained. Tinnok grimaced and stepped forward, drawing another arrow. It was only a matter of time before the Dhani fell, but who would enact the final blow? Would the male return? What had been the purpose of this raid?

Her thoughts flew as she was let into the open circle around the snake, Aya at her side, bows aimed at the beast. Tail thrashed and mauled, a wickedly curved blade in the Dhani’s hand that darted and flashed in the sliver of moonlight, reaching out with deadly efficiency to try to slash her attackers. Tinnok was drawn to the thought of a venomous snake discovered in its lair or out hunting at night. The way it coiled and reared, determined to take its adversary down with it. A final desperate attempt. “Snake.” The word slid from her lips, louder than she had intended. Then she said it again, and again. The word became a beat, and she raised her voice as she spoke. “Snake. Snake. Snake. Snake. SNAKE.

At first hers was the only voice, but spreading ever outward from her position the word was carried upon tongues, and soon the whole gathering of warriors had taken up the chant. It was part mourning, part promise. Tinnok’s vision was filled with a blood lust that called to be sated as she looked upon that massive creature amidst them, and when her foot broke the circle, Aya was right behind, and then the whole group of them, all ten warriors sprinted forth to all gain a share of the glory that bringing her down would provide.

“SSSSSSSSSSSSSSNAKE!”

The two of the half-bloods made a pretty good team, it had to be said. They would notch, draw and release their arrows in almost unison, following the same speedy rhythm.

Their attention moved to another Dhani, and for a moment Ayatah glanced at the stern faces of her fellows. All were concentrating completely on their foe, notching and releasing arrows with impressive speed. And yet… Every now and then, Ayatah would notice a man or woman glance sideways, almost nervous. The Dhani attack had certainly… not scared the Myrians, but perhaps spooked them, confused them. The death of their patrol leader had also given them cause of concern. Imalla had been a war-hardened woman, use to defending her Jungle home from Dhani and other enemy alike. This would not have been her first face-to-face combat with the snake-people; not by a long way. Yet she had perished… when it came to death, years of training did not matter. When you were dead, you were dead.

But this Dhani woman was simply not dying. She had an almost comical number of arrows sticking out of her body, and yet there was still a hell of a lot of life in the half-scaled woman. And that smile… Ayatah forced herself to look away. That smirk was both unnerving and infuriating. The half-Eypharian wanted nothing more than to wipe that psychotic grin off her enemy, but to do so would be close to suicide.

The Myrians were closing in on the snake now, stalking in a tighter and tighter circle. Every so often, the Dhani would lash out with tail or dagger, and the circle would widen again. She was not going down easily, but slowly the shit was going down. There was no possibility of her escaping; the last thing she would see before finally going to Dira would be the faces of ten Myrian archers, all looking at her with utter hatred.

So why had they come here? The question played on Ayatah’s mind as she notched, drew and released another arrow. It landed in the lower part of the Dhani’s body, but aim was not so important now. With each arrow that was embedded into the scales or skin, the Dhani died a little more. It was just a matter of time. So why had they come here?

”Snake.”

The word came from Ayatah’s right, so she did not even need to glance over to Tin to know that it had come from her. Her friend repeated the word, several times, her voice growing louder and louder. It’s a chant, Ayatah realised, like a war-cry. The beat of the words were staccato and soon she joined in with them.

Surprisingly, more voices joined the two half-breeds’ own in the chant. The first to join in was Bennik, and from across the circle of Myrians, Ayatah smiled faintly to her cousin. Then another man, and a woman, and soon the entirety of their patrol was speaking in unison, releasing and notching arrows in time with the beat.

When the lurched forward, Ayatah saw that sick smile on the Dhani’s face twist into something else. Worry, concern. Maybe be even fear. Perhaps it was easy to smirk in the face of your murderer when they were a few feet away, but when ten of them rush towards you… it’s not so quite of a happy sight. Or so Ayatah imagined, anyway.

So she fell into a run beside Tinnok, and by the time they reached the struggling Dhani, the heady sound of sixteen other feet echoes around them. Double-sided dagger in hand, Ayatah scraped the blade across the middle of the snake-woman, cutting into skin and scale. Switching to a forwards grip, she flicked her blade upwards, writing a ‘T’ into the body of her foe.

Eight more Myrians joined them now, embedding daggers and swords and axes into the Dhani’s soft skin and shiny scales. There was another sound in the air as well; the lamenting swansong of the snake-woman. She shrieked and wailed --

And a concerning thought crossed Ayatah’s mind; was she calling for reinforces?

The Duties of a Patrol [Tinnok]

Postby Tinnok on February 10th, 2013, 3:52 am

Knives, arrows, swords, axes. The creature was hacked to bits in short order. Her scream was like sweet music to the half breed's ears as their party sliced their way through scales and flesh alike.

Tinnok had dropped her bow in favor of her steel curved dagger, hooking it up into the flesh and carving it like a dead animal. She stared up into dying eyes and did not smile, yet found great satisfaction in the creature's expression.

Her body vaguely remembered the male, almost like the shadow of a dream, as well as whatever snake had been in the entrance of the cave creating a diversion. The Myrian rotated suddenly to look behind them, eyes scanning the horizon carefully for signs of trespass or shimmers of scales. What she saw was the reflection of the moonlight upon too sickly green eyes in the underbrush. Her body went rigid, blood and gore running down her arm, gaze focused intently into the foliage. It wouldn't be a bad move for the creature to attack, now that they were all focused on the female, but she saw the shadows turn and shift, saw the form grow smaller as it backed away from their camp and headed towards the cave. So it hadn't been a mission meant to kill all the scouts...and if it had it had been poorly executed. Tinnok turned back to what had previously been a Dhani to see the body mangled nearly beyond recognition save for the fact the tail was mostly in tact. People shaved sections of scales, hair, or limbs from the creature. Each clan had it's own type of mementos. Tinnok herself liked teeth, though her clan usually went for the weapons their fallen enemy bore. She found the curved long sword upon the ground, realizing that it wasn't that at all, but a scimitar, and hefted it in her grip. It was strange, the handle was straight, the blade curved with the wide tip at the end. She gave it a few practice swings around and saw a few pairs of eyes staring at her. She had claimed her prize, and would take nothing else, and no one challenged her right to the sword. The half-breed taking the scimitar from the full snake seemed like a fitting tribute to most perhaps.

Tinnok glanced around. Plenty were feasting on the flesh of their foe, a couple starting the fire to cook the meat. Sentries were already posting themselves at the edges of the wood, and damage reports were being done. Three dead to the one snake, and their water supply had been eviscerated by one of them. Eyes were wary, but at worst it had simply been a night raid. There were no victory cries or grins. Two women and one man had been lost this night, one of them the scout leader. Even as the meat of the Dhani was consumed or cooked, funeral pyres were being set up for the Myrians to send them to their Queen Goddess. Tinnok helped gather the needed wood.

It was always the quietness after a battle that Ayatah would remember the most clearly. And after the female Dhani had finally fallen to the floor, eyes staring blankly ahead, the Myrians really did fall silent. They were mourning the loss of their three comrades, with others tending to their own wounds as well. It was a grisly sight to behold; blood everywhere, people scathed and scratched, the Dhani was now lacking a left hand (Ayatah knew that Borron of The Shrunken Hands had quite excitedly hacked it off mere chimes after she had been killed).

She approached the snake, dagger in hand. The Scattered Bones were called as such because they took three bones from each of their foes; burying one far from the body of whatever creature it came from and dedicating it to one of the many deities their people worshipped. They offered the second bone to their Goddess-Queen, and the third would be taken back to the clan home, for the head of their family to decide what to do with it. Bennik had already broken the index finger of the she-snake, and Ayatah began to slice the floppy digit away from the remaining hand. Her cousin paused then, considering which bone to take from their fallen enemy next. A woman had sliced the creature open from throat to pelvis, revealing the pink organs inside - though the liver had been snatched by someone and was now cooking on the newly lit fire. Ayatah pointed to the ribs, white and jutted forward. The bones were thick and wide, and would take some breaking. Bennik sighed heavily, muttered something about ‘why couldn’t she turn human at the last minute?’ and set about his work.

Tinnok had claimed a scimitar, Ayatah noticed as she glanced up from her work. The finger had come off from the hand cleanly enough, and was now in Ayatah’s own grasp. She set about scraping the skin and flesh off the bones, mind active with pensive thought. Tin did well, the mixed-blood thought - and did not mean it patronizingly, but admirably. Tinnok had killed a Dhani; the same race that her father had been, and that she was half of. For as long as she could remember, Ayatah had secretly known that she would not be able to do the same. When she had first joined the army, she had lived in fear of the moment that the new recruits would be sent out to attack a group of Eypharian explorers. Fortunately, that had not happened -- but Ayatah knew that it would be stupid to assume that it wouldn’t happen. And if it did, I would have to kill my kin to defend my home, she thought grimly.

”I don’t think they’re coming back any time soon,” she said slowly to her fiend, smirking as she saw Bennik kick at the Dhani’s rib cage for a fifth time, ”though I still don’t know why they came in the first place.” All that now remained of the she-snake’s finger were the bones, and Ayatah discarded the rest in favour of the proximal phalanx. She admired her work for a moment, comparing the length and thickness of the bone against her own thin fingers. They really are a beastly race

The Duties of a Patrol [Tinnok]

Postby Tinnok on February 11th, 2013, 2:12 am

oocSo I somehow edited this post and deleted its contents and have no way of retrieving them, hooray!

I have attempted to recreate it as close as possible to the original! :D

(It is not the same, but it shall have to do)

"Must you bury all of them? Not going to keep a tooth or knuckle bone as a memory of facing the great and vicious snake abominations?" Tinnok smirked as she nudged Aya roughly upon the arm, then her expression straightened as she heard the worries, the questions. That was what it came down to wasn't it? The strange nature of this time and the whole day? Tinnok shrugged. "It is all strange. They risked so much for something so precise and strange...our supplies can be restocked easily and only three? I've heard of Dhani taking many more Myrians in well planned ambushes. Why did they come?"

"Revenge."

Tinnok and Aya turned simultaneously to see Hilt, Imalla's latest consort. He gripped a large fang tightly in one hand. There were no wetness upon his face, Myrians learned not to shed tears among comrades, but a strange resigned expression, deadened and apathetic hung there in place of sadness. Tinnok inclined her head in the respectful manner, but lifted her hand slightly in question. "Care to share the story with a fellow abomination?" It was a bold move, connecting herself with the creature that murdered their clan mates, but Tinnok wasn't feeling particularly civil after the night they had had, and Hilt didn't seemed off put by her mannerisms, perhaps because of the apathetic look that was strung across his features. "Imalla, Kinal, and Shiln were all part of the same fang. They were heroes in Taloba for taking down a whole group of Dhani with nearly no casualties. Used every trick in the book, even had an expert Reimancer as part of the fang." He paused. "...They were the last left alive before tonight."

Tinnok intook a deep breath as the true meaning of that evening sunk into her mind. Not some raid upon their supplies, not some raid to take some of their number, planned and organized for specifically three people...Tinnok shuddered.

"Must you bury all of them? Not going to keep a tooth or knuckle bone as a memory of facing the great and vicious snake abominations?"

The comment made Ayatah’s eyes glint with humour and a smile broke her otherwise concentrated face. ”You’ve ruined it now,” she said, pouting, ”I was going to make you a beautiful necklace out of all of them.”

Her smile disappeared when Tinnok mentioned how the snake-people seemed to have restrained themselves a little. Only three of our people dead… It was odd, yes - but she didn’t have time to ponder over possible answers before one was vocalized.

”Revenge.”

The simple word sent shivers down Ayatah’s spine. Revenge. It was a force that could drive smart people to do idiotic things. There was an old story within the Scattered Bones clan of a distant uncle, who was driven to madness over the death of his mate. A Dhani male had killed her, and even after Ayatah’s uncle of more than two hundred years ago had hunted down no less than fifty of the snake-men, he lusted for more revenge. Eventually, driven mad by it, he leapt straight into the entrance of Zinrah, crying out his the name of his deceased beloved. The tale ended by how the patrols on duty that day could never forget the sound of bones breaking, flesh tearing, a desperate man crying out.

Yes, revenge was not something she took lightly. And when Hilt moved on, she turned to her friend, almost fearful. ”That male. The Dhani. What are the chances that he’ll forget we - a half-Dhani and half-Eypharian - nearly killed him?” Had they been pureblooded Myrians, her concern would not be so fervently. But if this attack had been out of revenge, who was to say that the snake-people would not attempt another? ”And how did they know that Imalla and the others were on duty? They must have watched…” Her voice drifted off. Ayatah had always had a… vivid imagination, and it was not uncommon for her to create a detailed story of what could, or might, happen before anything really did.

Tin smiled and feigned a necklace with her hands. "How fitting it would be to see me sporting the jewelry of my half kin, mayhaps I will request one upon my return to Taloba."

Both the half breed's considered the implication of that word. Revenge. It was a powerful thing, driving many monsters and men to madness alike. "They are patient to hunt and watch so carefully, but they have to be...every death is meaningful to them with numbers so much smaller than ours, making sure every death counts." Tinnok's eyes narrowed at the rather morbid thought, but her body had relaxed until the moment Aya mentioned the male. The Dhani that had seemed to enjoy the way the half-Eypharian smelled, and knew exactly what Tinnok was as soon as their eyes met. Clever enough to retreat when the odds were against him, but that last glimpse of those green eyes...Tinnok shook her head out of its reverie. A slow fear threatened to grasp at her, but she refused to let it take hold. THe half breed wiped some residual sweat off of her forehead. "Well better one of those things than a whole group I suppose... and we won't be hunted down like an animals."

She saw the same resolute determination in Ayatah's gaze that was in her own. If this victory had come at a high cost, if their encounter with that Dhani meant another round...well it probably wouldn't strike unless both of them were there, killing two birds with one stone as it were. And neither Tinnok nor Ayatah were some dumb finches that would await their death.

Simultaneously both old friends turned toward the pyres, where bones, sticks, and drums made a mournful beat to accompany their companions into Myri or Dira's embrace, depending on where the warriors went, to rejoin the cycle of life, or to cease this circle and serve in the shadow army. Two pairs of feet joined the circle of individuals, and no eyes looked with disdain or hate upon them, for there were other things upon their comrade's minds. It was a somber and thoughtful evening for all, but the glimmer of snake skin and bones showed reward for the sacrifice.

Additional Notes :
Great work, guys! If there's one complaint I'd make (aside from the spelling and grammatical errors, of which there were several... proof-read, ladies!), it would be that the story was told so well that it was hard to give XP points to specific things. You blended everything together very well and, yes, I was impressed that you kept the struggle within the realms of reason. Like Traverse once said in a grading, the Dhani are probably the biggest and most dangerous race in Falyndar: the ten-to-one ratio you mentioned is probably accurate.

Just to survive was a victory, and well-won!

I loved and was pained by the abuse both of you described, and I'm happy you didn't shy away from it. Overall... yeah... very impressive work, and I hope to see more collaborations from you both.
