The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

21st Summer 513

It was early in the day, barely at the end of the dawn rest. Most of Lhavit’s citizens were asleep in their beds. All except for Rathe and Ajah.

He yawned, rubbed the sleep out of his bleary eyes and peered around the corner, into the kitchen.

There was a giant skyglass bowl overflowing with yatani perched on the counter of his workstation. On the other side of the kitchen, five more bowls just like it waited for him. Ajah must have run out of room to stack anymore of the fruit in Rathe's narrow workspace.

At times like this, the endless workload of a prep cook tested his resolve. How badly did he really need the few kina he scraped together from this job?

Badly. There’s nothing else out there. Been over and around it a hundred times already.

He knew it was true too. Lhavit was full of people who were smart. People who could read right. Ones who didn’t get confused by numbers or letters. Nobody needed someone like him. Rathe was lucky to have the job that he had. He needed to suck it up. It might not have been the shop of his dreams, but it kept him out from under the bridges and his honor up off the floor.

That and the fact that I’d starve-to-death in less than a season.

Which, for someone with his healthy appetite, was the worst way to go.

Every dawn that he worked after sleeping a few chimes too few, he had the same argument with himself. Yet, he still worked at The Nook. Might have been that he was as dull as the knives Ajah wanted him to saw apart the food with.

He picked up a yatani, tore off a piece of its juicy flesh and shoved it in his mouth savoring the burst of flavor on his dry tongue. A dribble of it ran down his chin and dripped onto his clean white tunic.

That just proved his point. I'm a hazard with no sleep, he thought, as he grabbed a cloth and wiped away the mess.

It was too late. The stain was already setting in when he heard Ajah's voice. Even her gentle tone drifted clearly out into the kitchen, all the way from the dining room because the two rooms were practically on top of each other, separated by only a thin wall.

Rathe froze. Despite the clarity of the sound, individual words were harder to make out. His brain liked to dance around their meaning.

Was she asking for more prep? Already? He stared down at the days’ worth of work in front of him. The fruit hadn’t even been started yet.

He listened carefully, tuning everything else out so that he could memorize every word, as he couldn't write them down. It took a lot of effort and it made him very tired. He had to pay attention to every syllable, constantly fighting to keep them from twisting backwards.

Her laugh startled him out of concentrating and he lost it. He had no idea what she'd said. If she asked him to repeat it, he was petched.

Always Start with a Larger Pot than you Think you'll Need

The deep voice of a male reverberated through the kitchen following Ajah’s laughter. Rathe recognized the voice of Ajah’s boyfriend, Sijoh right away. He was always at the Nook keeping her company through service.

He took a deep breath as he realized it wasn’t him she’d been talking to. It had been Sijoh all along. If her boyfriend was there and they were getting cozy, Rathe had at least a couple more bells on his own before she came to find him.

Thankfully, he had no reason to disturb them. It actually worked in his favor that Ajah was preoccupied. That meant he could attack the mountain of yatani in peace. If he wanted to get it done quickly and get out, it would require his undivided attention.

Rathe started by sorting through the fruit; pulling each one out, piece-by-piece and examining the skin for ripeness. Those that were perfect to the touch, he kept in his bowl. Any that were still hard moved to another bowl to ripen longer. Anything that was too mushy or had a brown spot went into a special pile that he set aside and saved for Ajah. She made her most delicious bread from what other people would toss in the trash piles.

There was no denying that Rathe had learned a lot from Ajah in the short time he’d been working for her. All that knowledge could fill a book.

He laughed to himself even though he doubted anyone else would have enjoyed his personal sense of humor. Being the punch line of his own jokes didn’t bother him. It was when other people tried to make him look like a vagik that it got to him.

Rathe plucked his apron from the back of the chair at his station and slung it over his head. He tied the strings behind his back and gave the cloth a tug to make sure it was secure. When he considered himself fully covered, he carried his bowl of perfectly ripe yatani to the sinks to be washed.

Shree would have been the most mystified of his friends to know that inspecting their skins for dirt was the part he liked best. Rathe was picky about food. Maybe not picky enough when it came to how he dressed; caring less about the state of his own skin. Only when it came to food could he relate to Shree's obsession. He needed to know that whatever he made was the best it could be. Given his limited skills, that meant he had to get the basics perfect. The basics started with a good scrub.

From there he moved on to inspecting the yatani for cleanliness. He made sure that not a speck of dirt remained on the skin. Then he made a second sweep of ripeness checks during the washing process, in case anything was missed the first time. Luckily, the first batch contained no mistakes.

As much as Rathe loved to cook, it filled only a part of his soul. It felt like more of a hobby than a way of life sometimes. It made him wonder if he was really doing the right thing. If the path that lay out in front of him may have just been the easier choice at the chime.

Someone who spent a lot more time thinking and less doing would have likely spent more of it tossing the thought over in his head. Rathe wasn’t that kind of guy. He wanted to do what needed to be done. His life was full of sacrifices. Why stop now? Bills had to be paid.

Back to this again? It made his head tired and while he considered putting his fork somewhere it didn’t belong, he picked up the dull knife instead.

I would have an easier time sawing through the yatani with the handle of my fork.

He shook his head and started slicing. The juicy fruit splattered onto the workstation, but this time he was smart enough to dodge the splatter. The worst of it hit his apron.

Methodically he worked, until he got to the bottom of the bowl, then he moved the finished bowl over to the counter, picked up a fresh batch and started over.

For bells, he kept at it, not looking up but to pick up the next bowl and bring it over to his work station. By the time Rathe was on the last bowl, his body was one giant cramp. His legs and feet hurt from standing still in one spot for so long. His arms hurt from trying to work in such a narrow space without killing himself and his hands were in full-spasm. He couldn’t clutch the knife anymore. It was ridiculous.

Tonight, he would take the knives home and sharpen them himself before coming back tomorrow, or he might not survive another work day.

At some point during the process, Ajah’s boyfriend must have left. Rathe had no idea when though. He was too engrossed in what he was doing.

She came in to inspect what he’d done and wore the smile of someone who was preoccupied with love. “I want to give you the ingredient list for tomorrow. Everything I need you to buy me is on there. You should run to the Azure Market before it gets too late.”

As she talked, she tried to hand Rathe a piece of paper. He held his hands up, showing Ajah the red stains on them, hoping she’d drop it, but she persisted.

He shook his head and tried again. “I can’t go, look at me. You should go yourself. Tomorrow’s event is a really big deal for you. Don’t you want to make sure you get the best ingredients? What if I pick up the wrong thing?”

“You won’t. And I can’t or I would. I promised my boyfriend’s family I’d serve their engagement tonight. After that, I’ll come help you set up for tomorrow. Both of these events are important to me. Help me with the one you can. I trust you to do this for me. You’ve been doing a fantastic job. There's no way you're going to mess anything up.”

She handed him a handful of kina and left him standing there with his foolish mouth hanging open. There were words on his tongue but they didn’t seem to make any sound.

Always Start with a Larger Pot than you Think you'll Need

The Azure was beautiful and functional all at the same time. It was a haggler’s paradise washed in blues of every kind. Rathe navigated his way through the passage that made it difficult for outsiders to find. He was as local as they got. It gave him a sense of pride to a part of Lhavit. It wasn’t something he always expressed, but he couldn’t deny the way his chest swelled when someone asked him where he was from.

That said a lot about Lhavit and the people who called it home. The city hadn’t always been the source of good things for him. He’d suffered more than he should have had to in his earliest of years. But no one ever gave him more than he could handle. He made the choices he did. Live or die by them, they were his.

Truthfully, he could have toughed it out in school, but what was the point? He was simple and everyone knew it. Some weren’t kind about it, but then, that’s where being nice and tall came in. It also didn’t hurt that the friends he did have were built pretty thick. Even at a young age, Shree’s head had been attached squarely too his shoulders. He was rock solid.

And Chevu, though slight, could talk anyone down from a tree, let alone out of a fight. He had good friends. He was lucky that way. Actually, he was lucky in a lot of ways, so accepting that there was something about him that just couldn’t be fixed mattered more to other people than it did him.

He shook his head to clear it. Here he was with this list in his hand that he couldn’t read worth a petch if he turned it upside down, sideways, or held it up to a flame. There was no cracking the writing code for him. Yet, it only set Rathe back a couple of chimes.

Living his entire life in a city full of some of the most literate, book-loving people in all of Mizahar, he’d learned to work around his simplicity. It may have given him pause and forced him to find a solution around the problem which took a little longer than reading the stupid piece of paper might have, but if nothing else, he could always rely on the good-nature of the deeply respectful people that formed his community.

Rathe scurried past numerous booths and stalls, making a beeline for Janoh Akimoto. The man knew the market like Rathe knew how choose the perfect yatani. He could depend on his help and many times he’d been kind enough to lend it to Rathe.

He easily navigated the crowd and found Janoh’s stall. Rathe approached the older man with a smile on his face, the paper clutched in his hand and bowed deeply once in the man’s presence. It was a thing he genuinely felt. It humbled him that Janoh was always so quick to help him.

However, the man’s face was deeply shadowed today. Though he bowed in return, no smile lifted his lips.

Rathe remained still, hesitant to ask Janoh for his help.

Janoh pushed forward though. “Need something?”

Rathe nodded, still reluctant to speak. “I have to get a few things. Thought you could show me where to find the best deals of the day, but you don’t look like you’re feeling up to it.”

“I’m sorry, not today. I’m packing up and heading home. I’m not feeling well.”

Rathe wanted to pursue the line of questioning but he didn’t know the man like that. Though he’d helped him a million times in ways he didn’t even know, the man had no idea just how deeply Rathe’s appreciation for him ran. Now didn’t seem like the time to push himself on him.

“Of course. I’ll just work my way around the Azure until I find the loudest price war.”

Janoh shook his head. “Thank you. If you come back in a few days, I'll probably be able to help you.”

Rathe nodded.

The man dipped his head slightly and disappeared into the crowd.

Rathe’s palm grew sweaty around the paper. The bell was getting late. Ajah would expect him back soon. Now what am I going to do?

Always Start with a Larger Pot than you Think you'll Need

Activity buzzed all around the Azure. Everywhere Rathe looked, people walked by. In a crowd that size, there had to be someone there he could con into reading the list for him, but he found no one else that he recognized.

There was only one thing left he could do. He thought back and tried to remember the ingredients for the last dish he’d made with Ajah. If he had to come back with ingredients, he would do the best he could. He tucked the useless list into his waistband.

The last thing they’d made together was Ajah’s yatani bread. Everyone loved it but she only made it for special occasions. He could easily imagine that being what she wanted to serve up for such an important event. She’d had him prepare all that yatani after all. She wanted to do something with it.

For what he recalled of the recipe, they needed: butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla and flour. He was sure they had plenty of vanilla, eggs and butter at the Nook. All he needed to find was flour and sugar. That was nothing.

He surveyed the Azure, looking for a stall selling what he needed. One jumped out at him right away. The shopkeeper wearing the yellow tunic, chirping his deals to the mingling crowd, drew his eye.

Rathe hurried over to the stall, caught the owner's attention and rambled off the list of what he wanted.

The shopkeeper smiled. “Five kina.”

“Five? I can get it for one on the other side of the market. Make it two and I'll take it."

“Four kina. That's only two-a-pound of each and that sugar’s the best in Lhavit. I should charge you double for the sugar alone. Don't be greedy.”

Rathe raked his fingers through the tiny granules. “Two. This sugar’s as common as it gets.”

“You blind?” The shopkeeper plucked Rathe’s hand out of the bag. “That’s good stuff you’re dirtying with your hands. Now how am I supposed to sell it to someone else?”

“Guess you'll just have to sell it to me.”

“Four kina. That’s it. I gotta cover costs and you’re tryin’ to ruin me. I can tell. Four or nothing.” The shopkeeper looked over Rathe’s shoulder. “I got a line building. Take it or leave it.”

“Two-and-a-half.”

“Three-and-a-half.”

Rathe shook his head. There were a couple of people milling around behind him and that was it. Not a single one was in line. “Too much for me. I’ll go back to the other stall.”

“Wait a chime. Wait...” The guy made a pained expression like it was killing him to lower his price anymore. “Three. Even. But that’s all I can do. I can’t go any lower.”

Rathe shook his head, knowing he was being taken for three but it was a lot better than five. “Done.” He dug the kina out of his pocket and handed it to the man.

In return, the man bagged up a pound of the sugar and a pound of the flour, which Rathe returned to the Nook with.

Once back inside the kitchen, he spread the contents of his purchase out on his workstation and stared down at it. Flour and sugar. He couldn’t go wrong with that. There were flour and sugar in anything worth eating. Even if Ajah didn’t want to make the bread, whatever she wanted to use the yatani for would surely require flour and sugar.

Rathe smiled to himself as the tension drained from his shoulders. I did it, he thought to himself, content for the first time all day. I actually got it done.

Ajah looked down her nose at Rathe. “Flour and sugar? That’s what you bought?” She eyed the sacks on his workstation.

“Um. Yes,” he stuttered. “Wasn’t that what you wanted?”

“Not even close. Where’s the list?” She demanded.

Rathe stiffened. The paper with the list on it burned against his side. He pressed his inner elbow against the edge poking out of his pants. “I lost the list.”

“What? You know how important this is to me. You didn’t look at it before you lost it?”

“I was in a rush to get to the Azure. I don’t know what happened. One chime it was in my hand, the next…”

The disappointment on Ajah’s face bothered him more than he wanted to admit.

“How am I going to serve Breakfast in Bed with no sausage or bacon?”

Breakfast in Bed. Oh petch, that’s what she wanted to make. Rathe pulled on the neck of his tunic, venting the heat that was rising. “What about short stacks? We could still do those. Or yatani waffles?” He offered.

“I have men with big appetites coming. Yatani waffles wouldn’t fill a child’s belly.” Ajah blew an exasperated breath out in Rathe’s direction.

“I’ll go back to the Azure and get what you need. Gimme a couple of bells and I’ll fix this, I swear.”

“No. Absolutely not. You’ve done enough damage in this kitchen for one day. Go home, Rathe. I’ll take it from here.” Ajah looked wearily at the bowls of yatani and ingredients spread out everywhere, then picked up an apron and her knife. Without turning around to look at him, she said, “What are you waiting for? Go. There’s no time for discussion. I have a lot of work to do and the bell is growing late.”

“Ajah—“

She pointed toward the door. “Goodbye.”

Rathe had worked so hard that day, but none of that mattered now. As much as he wanted to stay, he knew it was only going to make things worse if he did. Ajah had a good heart, but he’d let her down. She was disappointed and overworked and that was a combustible combination.

As he left, he swore he’d make it up to her.
