Time

It can be difficult for me to separate Sybel's feelings and my own, especially in the realm of music. I feel certain things apply and I have to wonder - is that felt through my filter as a writer?

If she was standing next to me, would she share my sentiments? I'm not sure. All I can say is certain songs apply to her. Maybe in my own abstract way they apply, but I suppose I can only distinguish between my character and myself so much before developing a split personality. I'm not quite there yet, but I want to walk the line and see where it takes me.

So in honor of Eleret, here is today's musical contribution. I think my character could certainly relate to this.

Time.. Until it's gone forever.

[Sybel's Scrapbook] Lust for Adventure

Ye Olde Workshoppe I

My Iron Lung - Radiohead

I was sitting, waiting for my sister to get done with work last night when I decided to browse Mizahar on my phone. I browse threads sometimes and other times scrapbooks. This particular night I was feeling the latter, so I sat and looked through Cosmic Love (Naeya's Scrapbook) and found a whole treasure trove of character exercises. I have to admit I was inspired. I sort of willed Amber to work later than normal just to read more - whoops! Lucky for her, the Force was not with me.

Naeya has a very insightful writing style and explores her PC masterfully. That compelled me to try and do the same. (Key word being try.) From now on, I'll be workshopping Sybel in here. Hopefully she'll use this opportunity to reveal herself more thoroughly.

So I'd like to start with:

Ethics, Morals and Values

Gossamer actually introduced the workshop here if you'd like to try it yourself.

Ethical Type: Emotivist

A person that thinks that instead of following some set of absolute rules, you should rationally think about ethics and what is the right thing to do. Ethics should be thoughtful rather than simply obeying rules. This is a rational approach of ethics. They believe that feelings (emotions) should determine ethics along the lines of this thinking.

Sybel has a tendency to view conventional laws as guidelines, however that doesn't make her lawless. At her very essence she is an existentialist, valuing existence over essence. There are no hard and fast ethical rules, as each individual measures their choices based on their unique personal experiences. That sort of sticks her between Consequentalist and Emotivist.

What makes the distinguishes her is the basis for those judgements. Consequentalists "consider the specific consequences of different actions in a given situation in determining what is right and what is wrong." Sybel throws caution to the wind in the realm of consequences. From her perspective, certain ethical decisions transcend consequence, E.G. Freeing a group of slaves that a village uses to sustain itself. In her opinion, slavery is wrong. The violation of universal human freedoms elicits an emotional response in her, on which she bases her decision. That is despite the consequence of the village suffering.

However if a different individual was in the same situation and did not take the same action, that too is valid. Individuals have the fundamental right to choose. She simply decides to make each step a specific choice instead of allowing some arbitrary set of commandments to make that choice for her.

Defining Values:

Freedom
"The power to determine action without restraint."
Above all other values, the issue of personal freedom is what defines Sybel. Being born into a culture which defines individual freedom based on essence shaped her perspective, as her gender denied her certain societal rights. The rejection of this idea is the basis for her entire philosophy.

Exploration
"An act or instance of exploring or investigating; examination."
Sybel views life as a large exploration. By investigating it rather than making assumptions about it, she has a more realistic perspective. Exploration is a fulfilling pursuit for Sybel, as it has helped her define who she truly is.

Humor
"A comic, absurd, or incongruous quality causing amusement."
First, Sybel finds this to be the most effective coping mechanism. Early in life she discovered that humor let the air out of otherwise hurtful or offensive acts. By laughing at something, you looked past its substance and saw it in earnest. Second, laughter flavors otherwise bland experiences and makes them palatable.

Potency
"Capacity to be, become, or develop; potentiality."
Her perception is that each person has a certain unknown potential that can only be achieved through exploration. She wishes to be develop to her fullest extent.

Temperance
"Moderation or self-restraint in action, statement, etc.; self-control."
Much like her ethical philosophy, she believes all actions should be weighted and considered. By utilizing temperance she can clearly assess situations without emotion clouding her judgement. Emotion is fine, just as long as it's moderate. Everything should be balanced.

Synergy
"The interaction of elements that when combined produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual elements, contributions."
There are certain ends a person alone cannot accomplish. For example, an individual cannot be an army. It cannot fight a war of independence or run a state. Synergy is in line with her idea of temperance - working with others in moderation and harmony can always achieve a greater end, so long as there is total freedom within the group.

Cunning

"Skill employed in a shrewd or sly manner, as in deceiving; craftiness; guile."
Sybel enjoys being a merchant in exploration of her own self. It is in part to honor her Father's legacy but also in part for the joy of besting her opponent. Cunning is being adept at both persuasion and deception - the perfect application to her chosen profession.

Conviviality
"Fond of feasting, drinking, and merry company; jovial."
One of her most endearing characteristics is her social affability. Sybel loves to drink, talk and have a good time.

Challenge
"A call or summons to engage in any contest, as of skill, strength, etc."
Going along with her value of cunning, Sybel enjoys obstacles. They lend worthiness to her endeavors.

Wonder

"To be filled with admiration, amazement, or awe; marvel"
Finally, her version of humility lies in wonder. What compels her to retain faith in life is the sense of wonder it can instill. Wonder is her overall source of inspiration.
