Day 18, Season Summer, 513 AV

”It was always our responsibility to watch over her. But you are a fool if you think that you can stop something like this from happening all the time. And an even bigger fool if you think she’d let you.” Rhys smirked, the tone of his voice indicating that he found Jorin’s speech a little insulting. Standing up to his full height, he shook his head slightly.

”Pretending to be friends is all fine and dandy, but I would prefer not to be anyone I’m not. Rinya knows my personality and handles it just fine. Maybe you are the one hiding things from her?” It was a quiet insult muttered over Jorin’s shoulder as he stepped into the room behind him, perhaps more of a bluff than anything else. But Rhys went back to stern and quiet face, in an attempt to save face regardless.

Rinya could feel a twitch settling between her shoulder blades. The stretching of her arms above her head really tugged at her muscles and Rinya hissed between her teeth. The dress was not even close to falling over her head. Frustration was beginning to settle in her gut and she finally just growled and dropped her arms into her lap as the door swung back open. Apparently they were done speaking, and while it wasn’t a very long talk, Rinya couldn’t help but still feel incredibly irritated by the boys.

"Rinya," Jorin called out to her, "Do you need any help with that?"

The glare she leveled at them was probably hot enough to melt steel. At the moment it was easy to hang on to her anger. And both of them undoubtedly knew it. Rhys remained near the door, shifting awkwardly and looking anywhere but her. Though his eyes could possibly just trying to be polite as she was uncovered thanks her inability to dress. Jorin however probably read into it even more. It was more than just frustration, irritation, and impatience. Her pride was already bruised enough, and now it was worse.

”No I do not.” This answer was more on principal rather than the fact that she probably should not do it herself. But she wasn’t fool enough either to think Jorin would just leave her completely alone. So holding her breath she slipped her fingers back into the sleeves through the bottom of the dress and lifted her arms again. This time she had better luck, feeling the cloth slip over her skin to her waist. Slowly she let air leak back into her lungs and pushed herself off the bed. Her hip resisted the idea of weight, but she stubbornly held onto the bed until she could feel the muscles relax.

I am going for a walk. You both can go home.” The obvious dismissal of both of them in her voice was cold, and she knew it. Granted she wanted Rhys to finally get some rest. He was looking so strained she wasn’t sure how much long he could actually stand. With Jorin… well she really didn’t want him to go, but she hoped he wouldn’t feel the lonliness that was creeping up on her. She wanted to nurse her wounded pride before she would say something she’d regret.

Rhys frowned before glancing between them. He seemed to make up his mind before shrugging his shoulders tiredly.

”I’ll be back tomorrow.” And he was out the door faster than she actually anticipated. She had figured the Akalak would argue his way until she nearly injured herself yelling back. So it left her leaning slightly against her bed, with Jorin somewhat between her and the door. Clearing her throat slightly, she realized that she couldn’t exactly look directly at him for no particular reason other than he was viewing her rather bad temper… again.

Season of Summer, Day 82, 513 AV

"It was always our responsibility to watch over her. But you are a fool if you think that you can stop something like this from happening all the time. And an even bigger fool if you think she’d let you," Rhys had said mockingly. Ordinarily, Jorin would have risen to the bait, but he was not in the mood that day. He merely ground his teeth, then replied, "Maybe so. But that doesn't mean I won't try. Believe what you wish. This discussion is over."

Jorin dearly hated to use that turn of phrase. Oh gods he hated it so much, because it was the same one his own father had used on him so many times, to end a discussion with finality. The impeccable reasoning and unassailable logic he'd used to trap Jorin into admitting that he had no argument, just flailing and wailing. A snot-nosed kid with no idea what he was talking about or doing.

"Pretending to be friends is all fine and dandy, but I would prefer not to be anyone I’m not. Rinya knows my personality and handles it just fine. Maybe you are the one hiding things from her?"

Jorin almost smirked at that. Almost. Rhys didn't know, then. Didn't know how far they'd come, how strong their bond was already. His acting wouldn't fool Rinya for even a moment. No matter how much he plastered a smile on his face if he was angry or sad she'd know it. She'd told him herself, that he'd always been transparent to her, and the bond made it worse. He never lied to her, because it would never work anyway. The acting wasn't for Rinya. It was for Rhys. So that he could save face. Jorin shrugged internally. If he did not want the peace offering, Jorin could care less.

When he walked in, he found her with arms outstretched above her head, her body uncovered, as she struggled to get into her dress. As always, the first thought that came into Jorin's head was beautiful, but then her anger struck him like a ballista bolt. Ye gods, the woman was angry! Jorin could feel white hot waves of it coming off of her and her eyes seemed to boring holes into his head.

Rhys seemed paralyzed by her rage, and Jorin found himself cautious. His annoyance at Rhys subsided, but he felt ... something. It wasn't quite fear. Well, perhaps it was fear. Fear that RInya hated him now. Fear that he'd made a mistake, that he'd said the wrong thing, done the wrong thing, and now she hated him.

It was silly. Jorin tried to tell himself that. He wasn't feeling hatred from Rinya, just anger. But still the fear was there. What if she didn't forgive him? How could he fix this?

"No I do not," Rinya bit out. Jorin almost flinched. It was like she was saying it just to him, and not just about the dress. He felt like he'd been windlassed, because her anger made it feel like that was also her answer to his next, unspoken question. Do you want me to take you home?

"I am going for a walk. You both can go home."

And there it was. A dismissal. Jorin could feel a lump in his throat that wouldn't go down no matter how much he swallowed. Rinya had never quite dismissed him like that. He couldn't find it in him to be angry at Rinya. Instead, he just felt sad. A deep melancholy settled into his gut and he barely noticed when Rhys made his promise to return and left the room.

And then it was just the two of them. But while Jorin would normally feel glad to have time alone with her, at the moment it felt like the most uncomfortable room in Mizahar. He could swear the air had thickened, and his mouth was suddenly dry. And, unfortunately, his words too had fled, like fish before a shark. He searched and searched his mind but couldn't find the words to say.

"Rinya ..." he began, almost timidly. He could still feel waves of hot rage coming from her. For such a small woman, she sure could feel a great deal.

He wanted so badly to fix this, but he felt like he was treading on eggshells. Like one misspoken word, one poorly phrased sentence, would send her flying away forever. It was absurd, the logical part of his mind argued. If their relationship were truly that delicate it would never have survived this long. But the feeling was still there.

"I'm sorry Rinya. I should have come sooner, I tried but no one would tell me anything ..." it sounded so lame to Jorin's ears. Hollow excuses.

Enough excuses, Jorin.

Jorin quickly squashed that particular memory. He didn't need that right now.

"Rinya, you're still hurt, you shouldn't walk anywhere alone. You're a strong woman, I know. Believe me, even though we've only been bonded about a season I've seen enough of your strength to know."

He tried a smile. A real one. Even if it didn't calm her, maybe it would dull the blades of anger shooting out of her. She seemed unwilling to look him in the face. He took a step forward ... hesitated. Normally, proximity to her didn't bother him. In fact it excited him in ways he couldn't explain. But now ... it was like Rinya had erected an invisible barrier. So he took a step back.

Back to square one.

"Please ... can I ... would you ... won't you let me walk you home?" he tried. It wasn't a begging tone, more of a pleading one. His own anger vanished as quickly as Rhys did. All he knew was that he wanted to help her. But if she ordered him home a second time, Jorin would have no choice but to obey.

Day 82, Season Summer, 513 AV

"Rinya ..."

The sound of her name caused her to flinch slightly. She had been determined to look anywhere but Jorin, but there wasn’t much to actually glare at besides the bed and the door. Pressing her lips into a thin line, she took a shallow breath in hopes she might be able to control her rage. Deep down she knew that it wasn’t entirely logical, but the idea of them treating her like a child was annoying. Young she was, but she needed her pride. She didn’t actually anything else in her life.

"I'm sorry Rinya. I should have come sooner, I tried but no one would tell me anything ..." Although she couldn’t actually think like that anymore could she? She had so much more now than before, even living in Sylira. Deflating slightly, she closed her eyes and shook her head. Raising her eyes to look at him, she caved.

”It has nothing to do with that.” She ground out, before pointing directly at the door with another sharp glare. ”It’s that I cannot stand. Just because I am injured does not mean you two can treat me like a child. Especially if it has to do with me. I can handle it.” And she a niggling feeling that it did have to do with her, she had seen Jorin only get so rigid once before—the last time they saw Rhys.

Shifting herself so she could stand straight, she watched warily as Jorin took a step forward, then seems to rethink his entire idea and stepped back. Frowning slightly, she let herself focus on his feelings. How she didn’t notice the fear before she wasn’t sure. But she couldn’t place where it belonged. Fear of her death? Fear of Rhys? Fear of just plain her? Dropping her eyes to the ground she took a deeper breath, ignoring the pain shooting up her spine as she did so.

"Please ... can I ... would you ... won't you let me walk you home?"

Cursing under her breath, Rinya moved past Jorin. Far more slowly than she would have preferred, but it had been the first time in days that she had her feet on the ground. Avoiding one of her biggest weakness, his face, she opened the door.

”I don’t get to go home yet. I am just going to walk around the facility,” After a moment, turned halfway to face him. Most of her anger had vanished, mild irritation remained, but she’d never be able to hang onto that for much longer.

”I can’t read—or write—for that matter. I told Rhys to find you know.” She mumbled, more humiliated at the fact she couldn’t have done more to reassure Jorin that she was alright before now. At the moment it was the best apology she could muster. But she stood in the doorway, hoping the invitation was obvious in lieu of an actual invitation.

Season of Summer, Day 82, 513 AV

"It has nothing to do with that." Rinya had groused as she pointed at the door. "It’s that I cannot stand. Just because I am injured does not mean you two can treat me like a child. Especially if it has to do with me. I can handle it."

Jorin looked mortified. Was that how she saw his reaction? As him treating her as a child? Rinya was the strongest, most independent woman he'd ever met, he'd never treat her like that. How to make her understand ...

"Rinya, I know you can handle it," he muttered. "But can you blame your bondmate for being worried? You almost got eaten out there! And I didn't want to argue with Rhys in front of you, because I didn't want to upset you further ... but it looks like I failed anyway ..." Jorin sighed tiredly. Rinya had walked to the door now, seeming to make a point of avoiding looking at him. Jorin felt a pang of hurt ... did she hate him that much now?

"I don’t get to go home yet. I am just going to walk around the facility," she said, turning halfway to him. Jorin felt a bit of hope. Maybe she wasn't that angry. Besides, he couldn't feel the white hot daggers of her rage piercing his heart through the bond anymore. Maybe she'd calmed down.

"I can’t read—or write—for that matter. I told Rhys to find you know," Jorin tilted his head a bit. He'd failed to make the connection of how reading or writing had anything to do with Rinya's current predicament, but Rinya stood rather awkwardly in the doorway, and Jorin blinked. Perhaps she just wanted someone to talk to. At the very least, if she couldn't read or write, it was an opportunity for him to teach her.

"Well, fortunately as a poet I kind of have to know how to read and write," he said, with a small smile. "I'd be happy to teach you. I mean, do you have anything better to do?" he asked playfully, feeling some confidence come back. Jorin tried hard to catch Rinya's eyes. Even though he had the bond, he still wanted to see them, just for assurance.

"If you're going for a walk, can I at least come with you?"

Day 18, Season Summer, 513 AV

Rinya wanted to blame him actually. She really did. And it was completely unfair to Jorin, and she knew that. Mostly because he had nothing to do with what happened to her, and he was most certainly not at fault for her injured pride. But her anger was never something that was easily tamed once she got going. In failing of that self control, she apparently caused Jorin to become unusually wary of her. Perhaps she had even hurt his feelings a little.

It really shouldn’t have surprised her though that he mostly ignored her outright tantrum. Most people got just as angry with her, argued over her selfishness and tended to leave her where she stood. That was something she was used to, but Jorin’s attitude was confusing her a little. She knew he cared, but that didn’t mean he had to stand there and take it either. No, instead he offered her the chance to learn how to read and write, with playfulness at that. Part of her wanted to be incredibly snarky and tell him she had a lot of things to do—not entirely a lie, but just to be mean.

But she made eye contact with him and realized her mistake much too late. Rinya found there was little she could do to ignore his eyes. Especially when he was trying to get her to look at him… Her shoulders drooped slightly in defeat and she sighed weakly. There was no point in making him feel bad over something he didn’t intend to cause, much less anything he didn’t deserve period.

"If you're going for a walk, can I at least come with you?"

If there was ever hopeful sound in his voice, that certainly sounded like it. Rinya simply nodded and turned to leave. Her hip protested greatly against this idea, but if she didn’t get outside and get some fresh air, Jorin was not going to be the only person feeling her temper. She was tempted to yank the bandage off her arm in irritation, but Jorin would undoubtedly dislike the idea.

Glancing back at Jorin slightly, she felt the need to explain herself for some reason. The whole idea that she was uneducated seemed starkly obvious between the two of them suddenly. Frowning a little, she twisted her fingers together in front of her, staring down at them instead of Jorin.

”I wanted to write to tell you I was injured. I figured Rhys wasn’t going to tell you about the injury really. I’ve been so in and out of it for the past few days that I wasn’t even able to get a hold on the bond either. And then there are the nightmares…” Rinya huffed slightly, realizing she was making excuses for her attitude rather than just saying what she really should.

”I’m sorry. That I worried you. And that… I snapped at you.” It sounded quite lame to her ears, but knowing Jorin… well he wouldn’t have cared probably if she apologized at all. But he at least deserved to hear it.

Season of Summer, Day 82, 513 AV

Jorin smiled when Rinya nodded her assent to his offer to walk with her. For a moment, he really thought she'd say something snarky, toss off her little grin that she liked to do, and basically wave him off. He'd gotten to know her a little better in the past season and he knew that sometimes, when Rinya didn't want to deal with something, she often covered it up with sarcasm, and the occasional surge of anger.

Jorin just quietly trotted up next to Rinya as she slowly made her way out the door. Jorin wanted to offer his shoulder, but he could tell that Rinya's pride was wounded enough, such an act would just infuriate her. He'd be there to catch her if she fell, but he wouldn't be her crutch unless she asked.

"I wanted to write to tell you I was injured. I figured Rhys wasn’t going to tell you about the injury really. I’ve been so in and out of it for the past few days that I wasn’t even able to get a hold on the bond either. And then there are the nightmares..."

Jorin just nodded, and gave Rinya a sheepish, lopsided grin.

"Come on Rinya," he lightly teased. "You really think I'd just let this go? I felt it as soon as it happened."

Jorin's face grew serious. "As soon as I woke up that day, I knew something was wrong. I could feel it. But I didn't do anything. I tried to ask about you, but no one would answer. I should have tried harder ..."

Jorin sighed. Self-recrimination was one of his weaknesses. His tendency to blame himself for everything. As his father always said, "Do not blame others for your problems. What happens to you is your fault, for it is your responsibility to make your life what you want it to be."

Nevertheless, Jorin knew Rinya didn't like it when he did that, so he quickly changed his tune. "Well, anyhow, I'll just have to teach you to read and write then," Jorin announced with a smile.

"And if you ever want to talk about those nightmares, or if you just need someone to be there..." Jorin left the offer in the air. There truly wasn't much he could do for Rinya on that front, other than being a comforting presence to assure her everything was alright.

"I’m sorry. That I worried you. And that... I snapped at you." Rinya apologized. Jorin smiled softly, and walked up to her, taking her good hand and gathering it up in his. Hugging her hand to his chest, he leaned forward and kissed Rinya on the cheek.

"Rinya, you don't need to apologize to me," he insisted. "Our bond is strong enough that I know you didn't really mean to hurt me. Besides, so much had happened; you needed to blow off stream. I'll bet being around Rhys is tiring work."

Jorin winked at that last statement in a playful manner, before turning toward the long hallway of the hospital.

"Come on," he said, "Let's go for that walk, huh? Nice and slow ... one step at a time."

Day XX, Season Fall, 513 AV

"Come on Rinya," he lightly teased. "You really think I'd just let this go? I felt it as soon as it happened."

Rinya blinked up at Jorin. The fact that he had known and had been unable to get to her—she imagined he was probably exhausted himself. She knew the Akalak tended to be very strict about visitors, but Jorin had every right to come see her. At least in her opinion he did. Really… Jorin was closer to her than anyone else ever would be. Rhys had no right to try and keep him from her, but there wasn’t anything she could really do about it now. Jorin had gotten in and that was all that mattered.

"Well, anyhow, I'll just have to teach you to read and write then,"

Rinya couldn’t help but return his smile. She had never thought about learning, it seemed almost a waste of time for her really. She often just found someone to bug until they would give her the answers she needed. Of course Jorin would probably always be willing to assist her even if she didn’t want to learn—but now it seemed like a good idea. If nothing else, it would time well spent together. The thought caused her cheeks to flush a little.

"Rinya, you don't need to apologize to me," he insisted. "Our bond is strong enough that I know you didn't really mean to hurt me. Besides, so much had happened; you needed to blow off stream. I'll bet being around Rhys is tiring work."

Swallowing thickly, Rinya stared at her hand Jorin held to his chest. He was too kind really. Of all the people who could deserve to be yelled at, Jorin didn’t deserve it. While he may not have taken any offense to her attitude, Rinya felt guilty enough. Leaning against him, Rinya rested her forehead against his shoulder for a moment and breathed in deep.

"Come on," he said, "Let's go for that walk, huh? Nice and slow ... one step at a time."

Letting his scent calm her, Rinya just nodded and let Jorin lead her. For now, everything would be alright.
