The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

She pulled ahead, circled to cliff once and came to rest on an outcropping there. Akaidras halted suddenly; his nostrils flared and he pranced in indecision. He smelled something, and it was something he did not like.

Shahar placed a hand on the stallion’s shoulder in comfort and encouragement, urging the beast once more towards the cliff. The grass shrouded all but what was directly in front of them, blocking his view of whatever it was that had made his companions so wary; that, in turn, made his own hair stand on end.

The falcon’s barred underbelly caught his eye from the cliff, marking his destination. He bumped his strider into a trot, and was nearly thrown from the yvas when Akaidras almost ran over a young man.

The horse shied violently, pawing at the air with a startled neigh. His hoofbeats were light upon the ground; he had difficulty placing his feet somewhere that was not on top of flesh, and within moments was straddling the man below with his forefeet. With some delicate stepping, the horse had soon managed to abandon the two figures and retreated a good few yards.

Unlacing his hand from his strider’s mane, Shahar regarded the two people at the base of the cliff with a cold, predatory stare. One lay upon the ground, twisted unnaturally and painted with the blackness of dried blood. Something pale glittered from his elbow; an exposed bone, perhaps? At first he thought him dead, but a few moments of observation revealed an almost nonexistent rising and falling of the shoulders—he clung to life, it seemed, though how strongly was something the rider could not see. The other seemed younger, and his skin bore an odd, shimmering quality to it; under the sun, it looked almost like bronze. He looked haggard and drained, and one of his hands was completely black.

The only thing Shahar knew for sure was that they were not Drykas. Their presence was sharply incongruent with the world around them; even a dying Drykas would have the feeling of belonging here that these two lacked.

Akaidras, too, could sense the desperate nature of the two young men, and he eased when he accepted that they were not a threat. Shahar slid from the beast’s back and hit the ground walking; though he did not make any move fore the javelins at his back, neither did he raise his hands in peace or diplomacy. His step was confident; there was no need to parlay with the conscious one—wiry and having been at the mercy of the grasslands for gods knew how long, the pitiful thing didn’t look like he could have appeared threatening if he tried. For his own part, the Drykas himself wasn’t completely clear on what he was doing—almost exactly as he had been when he had set out for the Serenity Tree. It was his gut pulling him towards the twisted one; if nothing else, he wanted to see exactly how broken that particular foreigner was.

Lost and Found [Jess'e, Khida, Shahar]

Postby Slither on July 3rd, 2013, 12:54 am

When the Master urged his steed forward once again, Slither knew he wouldn't be able to keep up. The Master would know this too, so if he was rushing ahead, it had to mean he didn't count on needing Slither. With this in mind, Slither slowed down his pace, and that of his charge - no point in tiring either of them needlessly. They'd arrive when they did.

His eyes, however, never strayed far from the rider's progress - though admittedly it was more guesswork than anything else, the tall grass keeping him from actually seeing the man he had to follow.

He had to admit he was surprised, if not worried, when he heard the strider's neigh. Still behind, the Dhani couldn't tell what it was, but if the Master wasn't fighting it, and he wasn't running, either he was dead or it wasn't a threat.

He shrugged, walking forward. It would be no more deadly than trying to make his way through the Sea without a guide, that was for sure. If the Master was dead, so was he, but it was a long time since he'd been able to bring himself to worry about that.

The gelding next to him, however, had a different idea. The strider's neigh had alarmed it, to the point where the animal had tried to pull back - perhaps if he'd tried with his whole body he'd been able to budge the massive Dhani or at least escape from him, but the animal's training kicked in and he just pulled lightly, repeatedly. To which the Dhani replied by sliding forward through the sand, paying him no attention, while pulling from its reins.

Sound and scent led him to the Master's current location, and he could smell the blood before he could see anything. Of all the things he expected, two half-dead humans were not very high on the list but, remembering his first experiences with the Sea, he scolded himself for not having though of it. By the time he arrived, the Master had dismounted, and by his stance it was clear he didn't consider either of them a threat.

The Dhani stayed several steps away from the broken bodies, cold serpentine eyes skimming over them, as his tongue did its own scouting, flicking out and tasting the air. The scent was pretty familiar - something he'd come to associate with the slave pits. Despair, perhaps, or maybe fear mixed with pain. He couldn't quite tell, but it was enough to let him know these two were having a rough time even before his eyes registered the severity of their situation.

Rough time didn't even begin to describe it. Dry lips, blood... human limbs were not meant to be bent that way, and that white thing on his arm looked like it belonged inside, not outside, he thought, amusing himself with the dark humor. They weren't long for this world if they didn't receive help. Or perhaps the help they'd receive would ensure their quick transit.

The Dhani shrugged. It was the Master's choice either way. He was curious, he admitted, to know what the man would decide to do. After all, what could these people give them in return for their aid, that they wouldn't be able to take after their death? On the other hand, the smell of blood was bound to draw predators, and taking them along would make the trip that much more dangerous. The non-compromising decision would be to leave them to fend on their own, but even that would say much about the Master - unwilling to take a risk for his beliefs, unwilling to give up his beliefs for benefit. Lukewarm ethics, to be used, twisted and misinterpreted as was needed.
