Fire Forged (Edreina)

Lightning. Ignotus hated lightning. Hated it when he wasn't the one controlling it, at any rate. Winter, apparently, was not quite ready to go quietly, and so a rather nasty storm, as well as keeping the wizard outside all night, had flung a blue bolt straight into the roof of an old cottage in the Denvali quarter. Being a fire Reimancer first and foremost, Ignotus was thus rerouted from the rooftops to the streets. He was but one of multiple manipulators of air, and he was far from the most skilled. That, coupled with his immunity to smoke inhalation, made him a natural candidate to address this new problem.

By the time the house had come into view, what had started as a small rooftop conflagration had turned into an inferno threatening to envelop the surrounding homes. Flickering orange flames thrashed out of windows, clay and glass cracked under the suffocating heat, and steam rose as the rain fought futilely against the blaze below.

As the Nuit drew closer, his ears were able to detect a high-pitched voice crying for help. Evidently, the owners were aware of the fire. A faint sob issuing forth also clued him in that their daughter was as well. "Excellent. So much for quick and clean." Ignotus mused darkly to himself. If he just sucked the fire out of the house, it would kill the family inside on the way out. This would take a long while. A very long while. A very long while the people inside could not afford. That, or someone else had to intervene. Someone bold, forceful, and dauntless in the face of adversity.

Fire Forged (Edreina)

Most people did not like to wander in the rain, let alone a storm so fierce, but it was the only time that Edreina felt clean while on land; the storms that danced uninhibited across Laviku's realm were far more powerful, anyhow. Makutsi's caress - could it be called such by any other than a Svefra? - wiped away the grime of simply existing anywhere other than the deck of her ship... But the 'grotto was so far away... Acclimation to life on land was taking far longer than she expected. And so, odd though it may have looked, Edreina was wandering the street in her atypical garb of leather riding pants and linen wrappings about her chest. Her hair was not, however, bound into its usual braid. Instead, the copper tendrils cascaded down her neck, her back, resting upon her chest; its presence was oddly comforting. So much had happened in the past few days, she needed the gentle touch of Laviku's daughter to wash away all of her worry and her trepidation.

Reveries only lasted so long. It was the smell of fire that drew Edreina in from her wanderings. That singed scent of charring wood, burning your nose each time you inhale. Over the rain, she smelled it, and her head automatically went to searching for the source. In her time upon the Anchorage, Edreina had learned the difference between a fire set by volition and by folly. Or, in this case she guessed, nature. She had seen bolts flash across the sky, illuminating her steps and her surroundings, momentarily canceling out the gloom of the clouds above. Zulrav's breath caused the flame to flicker upwards, the orange glow alerting Edreina to its presence.

Fire inspired so many emotions in humans. Among those was, of course, a morbid sort of curiosity. One had to wonder what was burning and why. And so the Svefra trotted her way through Zeltiva until finally she managed to face the blaze. It was a towering inferno that made the bonfires of the Anchorage appear to be naught but a spark, flickering with tongues of red and orange. It was a hungry behemoth crackling for more sustenance.

The moment she stopped in utter awe of the flame, it seemed to burst with a new sort of life. Two people, a man and a woman, came tumbling from one of the side windows, clutching onto one another and coughing violently. Spurred on by instinct, the Svefra ran to them alongside a few others. She knew little about medicine, but Edreina could not allow herself to standby when she may be able to help others. When she arrived, the bleeding woman was sputtering about someone named "Laine", saying that it was her daughter's name. What did that have to do with-

A child's terrified cry rent the air, sending a chill up Edreina's spine. She had never heard a child scream in such a way, not from pain, not from surprise nor excitement. This was a primal sort of fear that even the most archaic humans had understood. "My baby!" The woman screamed, attempting to rise before her husband pulled her back down, applying pressure to a gash on her arm. The Svefra had to had it to mothers, they knew how to fight when the safety of their offspring was threatened.

"Be still!" Edreina shouted above the snarling flame, surprising herself to some degree. Struggling in such a way would only have the woman be hurt more, and judging by her coughing she would not handle the fire well again. The Svefra chewed on her lip only for a moment before giving the woman a pointed look and turning to the window through which they had been able to escape. "Do you know where she is?" Curse this Common Tongue! It took so damned long to leave her lips, growing and sprouting from her tongue as slowly as a tree took root upon this foreign soil where her natural Fratavan would flow out as quickly as she needed it to.

"Across the house," the man wheezed, eyes a startling white beneath the soot, "small room without a window." It was not the best description, but frantic people rarely had much sense. Nodding, the Svefra ran to the window, gripped the sill, and threw her body in as easily as she would navigate between ships or a fully-packed subdeck. Adrenaline surged through her veins as heat and smoke assaulted her nose and eyes. She struggled beneath the urge to stumble backwards, back out into the rain-cleaned air.

She was here, she had to do her best.

The girl screamed again, piercing the the smoke and gurgling blaze. Elbow crooked over her nose and mouth, Edreina hunched through the fire quickly. Flashes of light threatened to blind her, and she stumbled twice over some fallen bit of the house. It was a struggle and the Svefra was doing her best to hold her breath as frequently as possible, making use of her enormous swimmer's lungs. Bells seemed to drag on as she moved through the house. It seemed to her as if the majority of the fire was still upon the roof, but it was slowly crawling down the walls like some sort of living disease.

Once more the little girl screamed, this time calling for her mother, for her "pa-pa". The tears in her voice should have doused the flame. Luckily, they sounded from a small closet in the hallway, not the room which she had not yet found. "Laine?" Edreina coughed, jiggling the handle of the door. After a tick, the door opened inward, exposing the pale, soot-spotted face of a child, a little girl with brown eyes and hair.

Without pausing, Edreina caught the little girl up in her arms and started to backtrack, cough becoming more fierce as she moved back towards the window she had used to enter. Half of her expected the ceiling to cave in as she trotted with the little girl bobbing in her arms. She did not, however, expect for it to be a bookcase falling into her way, tattered books with flaming wings spilling out.

The child's terror was voiced once again at the ruckus, the danger as Edreina barely managed to jump back. Now what! Petch! What the petching petch have I gotten myself the petch into!? Good thing the little girl was not a mind-reader...

Wordless with tears creating odd rivers through the black on her face, the little girl pointed solemnly and, through the smoke, the redhead glimpsed... Yes! Nearly unable to keep her coughing from doubling her over, Edreina bum-rushed the door, slamming her free shoulder into it as she moved, focused only on getting herself and the girl out of the beast's maw.

The heat-weakened door broke in several places, allowing the Svefra to tumble out and into the street, barely mindful enough to keep the girl from cushioning her fall. The girl was free, her parents were free, the willowy Svefra lay on her back, gasping and coughing like a fish denied water as her lungs ached so wretchedly. She was barely aware as the parents came to catch up their daughter, thanking the prone Svefra profusely. Dimly was she aware of the little girl telling her mother how she had tried to hide.

Gods this hurts... That is the last time I am ever nice to anyone... Ever! It was a lie, of course, Edreina knew not how to help herself when it came to this... But the lie kind of almost made her feel better. Groaning, she rolled onto her side, feeling water dance down her back as she did so, and contented herself with coughing just a bit more.

Fire Forged (Edreina)

On the plus side, the Svefra got to see a bit of a show as a result. With the denizens of the house vacated, there was now nothing stopping Ignotus from sucking the fire right out of the building.

This manifested as an entire blaze swimming through the air and coalescing into a roaring ball of flaming terror some meters above the rooftops. Then Edreina heard the sloshing of water some ways behind her, and the flames spiralled into a large bucket that a pair of civilians had hauled out. There was a burst of steam, then a light glow as the electric blue gas drifted back into its source.

And then what was quite clearly a very dignified-looking corpse loomed over her and demanded to know who she was. He was also extending a hand to help her up, mind, but still. Corpse. With corpse hands.

The Svefra had honestly expected the fire to burn long into the night, taking the house with it and damaging those nearby. So, one can likely guess at the expression that crossed her features when the fire was caught up in a gust of wind, whirling and spiraling like a spirit possessed in the air - Was that what this was? A flame spirit? Edreina had only heard tale of them... But, her wonder was squashed as no spirit, demon or not, would think to commit suicide in such a way. Or would they? Was this some sort of trick?

Blinking a few times, thus ascertaining that what she saw was reality, as some sort of mist - perhaps the demon's spirit? - crept forth from its watery grave. Blue eyes twinkling lightly with unebbing curiosity, the Svefra turned to watch, sitting up in the process, as the mist flowed across the ground and then into-

There was that odd moment where one found oneself eyeing the knees of an unexpected person, shrinking back in surprise and looking up in search of their face. A parade of emotions marched across the redhead's face, beginning with shock and ending with yet more curiosity. "How-... What did you just do?" His question registered with her mind a tick after her ears, causing her to blush lightly at her own exuberance. "Pardon. My name is-" her slim, freckled hand found a grip on his oddly chilled one, and she allowed him to help her up, speaking throughout her ascension, "-Edreina Whitewave. Sorry if I got in the way of... whatever it was that you just did."

Her smile melted away as she leaned over and brought her elbow to her mouth, coughing again. But, as always, it came back an instant later, as reliable as the tide. "Sorry about that... If I may ask, what is your name?" The name did not really matter to Edreina, nor did the fact that he did not look entirely normal. To her, everyone was different, most were incredibly odd - especially on land! - and she had not enough experience with Nuits to notice one even as it looked her smack in the face. Whatever/whoever he was, he had done something really incredible and the redhead wanted an explanation... Pretty please?

Fire Forged (Edreina)

"I put the fire out." was the slightly amused response. The corner of the Nuit's lips turned upward at the woman's name and apology. "Don't be silly. Your intervention was what let-"
It was around that time that Edreina's lungs attempted to spit out the tar clogging them, prompting Ignotus to start forward and wrap an arm around her. There was no strength in him, but it was a natural reaction, and it still offered some support.

A spindly silk-clad finger lit lightly under the woman's chin after she finished speaking, turning it a touch upward. "Allow me to help clear the smoke." the Hypnotist said as a small disk of Res seeped out of his palm. A tick later, Edreina felt the air leave her lungs, the smoke's taint exiting with it. Of course, with her body devoid of oxygen, she would also feel light-headed quite quickly. As well as vaguely euphoric, oddly enough.

He left her suspended that way for a breath, bony digit gliding gently over the soft curve of her chin, brushing against her lower lip. The brilliant blue vapor was drawn into her mouth then, filling her with pure, clean air. The curious sensation that had tinged her bout with breathlessness peaked, then faded away.

Of course, he didn't need to be so theatrical about it all, but this person had just dived into a burning building, snatched a child from its flaming ruins, and burst out with nary a scratch. Needless to say, the Svefra wasn't the only curious one. Besides, what was the harm in adding a little mystique to the whole affair?

"I am Ignotus Everto," drawled the wizard. "And you, my dear, are quite the heroine. But tell me, have you really never seen a Reimancer before?"
She could have her knowledge- when it was less fun to tease her with scraps.

Fire Forged (Edreina)

Great. Saved a kid in a fire just to get suffocated by a stranger. Thanks, gods. Something, perhaps the adrenaline, that came with being unable to breathe left Edreina kept her from worrying too much. As a swimmer, she was used to being with little oxygen. But no oxygen? It should have been a terrifying experience. Instead, she caught herself wondering what the heck this man was doing and, beyond that, how he was doing it.

Oh oh! It was a magic. But petch... what was the name of it?

When finally Edreina was able to breathe again, she inhaled deeply and smoothly instead of gasping as those untrained would; gasping took up too much energy, wasting the oxygen one took in. A grateful smile graced her lips, and that curious gleam had never left her blue eyes. "Pleasure to meet you, Ignotus," she said, quietly ignoring his compliment as she felt unworthy of such a title. In truth, she simply felt that she had done what was necessary and within her power, nothing more and nothing less; any decent person would surely do the same. But, the name he gave to his ability struck a familiar current in the Svefra. Quickly, that current carried her back in time along her memories to a moment several years earlier where she had foolishly allowed an Otani, and a Reimancer, to breathe life into her sails. It had been a terrifyingly exhilarating ride, one that Edreina frequently thought on whenever she started to miss Uleru.

This man, it appeared, had more control over the wind than the Child of Laviku had displayed. "I've... I've met one once before. But she had no where near the control you do." She miraculously resisted the urge to tell him the story. Abruptly, Edreina felt something crawling about in her nose, expanding and writhing in her nostrils until finally-

"Ach-OO!"

The petch? Instinct had prompted Edreina to turn herself from the stranger, but she found herself stunned by the action nonetheless. A sneeze? When was the last time she had sneezed? Wel, a season prior, some dust had gotten into her nose and caused her to sneeze, but there was no dust in the air now, which meant she was probably coming down with a cold. Now she was really just being punished. She used to walk around in the rain all the time on the Suvan, but one jaunt on land - well, she had technically been walking around yesterday as well, but she did not want to dwell on that day - and suddenly she was as susceptible as a babe. "I'm sorry," she said again to Ignotus, shaking her head but unable to hide her amusement. The gods really did have a sense of humor.

"The pleasure is all mine." the wizard replied. Upon hearing the very, very short story about the other Reimancer, he smiled. "I'd hope not- living as long as I have."

It wasn't long before Ignotus was laughing as well. A sneeze! He hadn't sneezed in years! "Now that's something I don't miss." the Nuit chuckled. "It's fortunate you've chosen now to get sick."

Now, if he had been living, he would have no doubt suggested they get somewhere warmer, but Ignotus hadn't been concerned with disease for more than thirty years, and he had simply forgotten what made people ill.

"Ch- Chosen now to get sick?" Edreina gaped, face quickly shifting into a grin. "Well. Fire didn't bring me down. Nature must have decided that I deserve some sort of punishment for being so brash, eh?" Something about what he had said only a tick earlier tugged at the Svefra, causing a copper brow to cock curiously. He did not look too much older than she. So, how could he make a comment about living a long time? Perhaps he was wise beyond his years? Or... was he simply gifted with a youthful visage? And then there was a comment about not missing being sick. What on Semele's earth did that mean?

Asking would be rude, but she was so very tempted.

She had been silent for a fair number of ticks now and had forgotten to look at the man, fixating on the way the rain looked as it splashed on the street. A cruel wind raced up the street and blew Edreina from her reverie, sending a shiver up her spine and gooseflesh dancing along her skin. Smiling up at Ignotus apologetically, she made an errant motion with her hand, a Svefran symbol of a wandering mind likely lost upon the stranger. "Thank you for... whatever it is you did," her brow wrinkled again, if only for a moment. "I think the time has come for me to seek a warm place to eat and ride out this wave of the storm, though." Judging by the look in the foreigner's eyes as they flickered from one building to another, she was likely to march her way all the way back to her room in the Denvali Quarter instead of seeking a new place to take refuge for a bell or two.
