It seemed that everybody had left the city for the coolness down by the bay; and they were wiser for it. However, there were some in Wind Reach that simply could not vacate their positions because of the weather. Lavira was one of those few, and it was with good cause!

The sweltering heat demanded the eighteen year old wear as little as she could as she climbed the trails to the nesting aeries. Even the airy bryda felt too hot and had been rolled up and tied over her knees, leaving her calves bare. There were four young birds who needed looking after and the Dek simply couldn't be trusted to tend them.

Vira stopped in the stock area near the first of the aeries in use and found the cart she used to haul the tubs and feed and other supplies between aeries each day and loaded these up with tubs of water; had she access to the glacier ice, she might have brought some to help cool the aeries off and prevent the young birds from overheating, but that was not doable presently, leaving the teen strictly with water to use. By the time she got the cart filled and up to the old matron eagle's nest, she was red in the face and sweating profusely. The heat this side of the mountain was definitely unbearable; she'd need to take breaks often or she was going to overheat. To this, Vira was very much aware of.

She stopped inside the older dames nest, huffing as she dragged the first shallow bin in. The bird was perched on the edge of her nest opening and closing her wings so that the two tiny eaglets were being fanned. The sweltering temperature was far too high for the birds to survive; it was a wonder the dame had managed to keep them going this long.

"I'm going to check the vents after I get the pans filled for you, Heshvala, and Mohya. Just bare with me." She said, dumping the water into the pans and stepping away for the bird to soak her underside.

She moved on to Heshvala's and set the pans up once more. The eagle mother had already dried her drink trough in an effort to keep the young birds cool, her feathery legs showing signs of soakage and the twins hovering against the stockings to take advantage of the slightly cooler temperature. 'vala looked near panic, her crest high and her wings pumping to keep the air over the nest circulating. "Hey, hey, Vala, calm down. You're going to hurt yourself, girly." Vira said as she worked with the pans. "Go sit in the water; I'll help the hatchlings to the shallow one to cool their legs. They'll be okay, but if you keep up like that you're going to do them no good." Vira offered, stepping into the nest to urge one of the young eaglets out and to the shallow pool she had set up with a tasty bit of meat.

The ginger felt her own temperature was likely too high from having done so much in so short an amount of time, but what choice did she have? This was her job, her life! It was the Inartans way of life! A whole generation had been lost the previous year no thanks to the storm; if these two were to die now because it was too hot, it would be another full year before the opportunity at new broods was to come again, and that was something that could not be lost. Not ever again.

The corridors that lead down along the Aeries and the nests were far cooler than any of the interior ones. Though it was a longer, more indirect path, Addy knew that it would make the trek from her home to the lakes slightly more bareable. Slightly.

Already sweating up a storm and not even past the Nesting Aeries, Addy had to stop more than once to stand on the edge of a ledge or cliff, waiting with her arms spread as if it would tempt a breeze out of no where to cool her down; it was a fruitless effort that only made her hotter from standing in the direct sunlight.

Days like these in the city were simply miserable, most of the population unable to just simply up and leave their tasks until the heat became just that unbearable that the Valintar would call for a cease work and evacuate the city. It hadn’t gotten to that point, but Addy was privileged enough to be free to meander down and cool herself off at the lakes.

The Dek that shuffled past, nearly bent in half from heat exhaustion were not so lucky; it was all Addy could do to just walk past them and not stop and help. Were she to stop and try to fix every Dek in the city, she herself would perish before completing the task. So, as much as it hurt to do so, the little woman kept her eyes on her toes as she shuffled her way down and out of the city.

That is… until she heard a familiar voice echoing out through the nesting area. “You’ve got to be kidding me..” Wiping sweat from her brow, the young woman altered her course and turned up the hallway the lead towards the nesting chambers of the Wind Eagles. “Vira? Is that you? What the petch are you doing up here? You’re going to make yourself sick!” Calling loudly, Addy took her time getting to the young woman, her hands balling to perch on her fists in a very motherly gesture when she finally came face to face with the Chiet.

“Seriously. You’re coming with me.”

OOC :
This is rather short after such a long wait, but I didn’t want to assume her reactions!

Vira had just gotten the first hatchling into the water. While the younglings could just as quickly lose too much body heat from sitting in water too long, it was easier to warm them back up than it was to cool them off (much less herself...). The baby bird let itself simply drop onto belly, sharp beak opened wide in a pant as noisy as the mother-birds was overhead, the big wings continuing to pump, doing her best to keep air circulating in the windless aerie.

The woman went to the second hatchling. But this one was clearly struggling, its chirps and hisses quieter and the panting having a ragged, strained sound as it lay lethargically in the nest. "Shyke, hold on, little one, just hold on." She said, kneeling beside the young bird and gathering it up into her arms. The eighteen year old was absolutely drenched in sweat, her hair sticking to her head and back and her clothes sticking even moreso as she worked to get the bird settled in her arms first and then get them both out of the nest. It was then she heard Addy out on the treacherous path leading up here.

Grunting, she called back, "In here, Addy, give me a hand!" Spots were popping up in her eyes. The young bird wasn't any heavier than one of the tin pans she'd hauled, maybe a little lighter, but it was the heat getting to the teen that made it more difficult than normal. "If I get sick, so be it, but I'm not letting these babes suffer for it, you hear me?" She argued back. Addy may be an Endal, but Vira felt strongly about her work and its importance. If these birds weren't kept healthy and fit and ready for fledging, it would be on her. The shame it would bring her if these twins did not make it to flight-age!

The chiet could almost hear the jeers, bouncing through her mind as she carefully set the baby eagle into the shallow water, holding its head above the surface.

Hey look! It's that girl who let those eagles die! She doesn't deserve to live here! Fucking worse than a Dek. Exile her! EXILE!

Vira sat in the water with the hatchlings then, unmindful of her already sodden clothing getting even more wet as handful after careful handful was scooped over the back of the one she'd manually moved. "Easy, babe, easy. I know it's hard and it's hot...deep breaths..." She cooed while the eagle-dame stood in her own pool, ruffling her chest feathers to draw the water in and cool herself off. The teens flushed face and blood-shot eyes sang of how close she was to collapsing. It was just too damn hot. But leaving the only two eaglets to be born absolutely normal since the storm to die in the heat? Ivak be drowned in the deepest abyss! That wasn't gonna happen on her watch.

It was hot. Sweat rolling down his bare chest and his hair matted and sticking close his skin, Valdr was not enjoying himself. In days such as this, when the temperature within the Wind Reach became almost unbearable, Valdr wanted nothing more than to be swimming. Indeed, he was making his way to the cliffs before running into Duvin, the Youthmaster of the Inarta.

“Valdr! Where are you running of to?”

Caught somewhat by surprise, Valdr almost tripped on a loose rock, catching himself of the rocky wall of the corridor. “Hello YouthMaster Duvin” He said respectfully, “I was just on my way to the cliffs to go swimming”. Valdr’s discomfort was visible as sweat dripped down his chest and arms, and while the temperature was indeed high, it did not seem to disturb Duvin. “In a day like this, swimming does seem like a good idea, doesn’t?” Looking him over, the older Inarta smiled, “You haven’t been given an apprenticeship yet have you?”

The question struck a nerve within Valdr. Almost 15 years old, He shown enough skill to merit still being a Yasi, yet he has been unable to impress anyone enough to be granted an apprenticeship. With his birthday fast approaching, has worked harder in order to be noticed and not be given the status of being dek. “No Youthmaster, I haven’t” He said, while casting his gaze downward in a small measure of shame.

“Well in that case, you really can’t afford to be slacking off can you….I heard that they needed some help up in aeries cooling them down. Perhaps, if you’re lucky you might just catch the attention of one of the Wind Eagles. Just a suggestion though, you do what you think is best.” With that, Duvin walked away, headed down the same corridor that he came from.

Looking down the path to refreshing waters that lay at the base of the cliffs, Valdr already knew what he was going to do. Taking a deep breath, he started on the path that leads the uppermost levels of Wind Reach, to help out the best he could.

“It is also not going to do the Eagles any good if you are passed out on the floor, dying of heat stroke.” Striding over to where the girl wobbled on her feet, Addy gently, if firmly, took the chick that she cradled in her arms from her and took the remaining few steps towards the pool, plopping it down in the cooling water before helping Vira settle into it as well. “I am sure this lovely mother would understand if you were take a break while they soaked…” Raising an inquiring brow to the indicated Wind Eagle, Addy wasn’t surprised when the bird barely opened one of her plate-sized amber eyes, giving neither of them more than a glance before she went back to her soaking. “See?”

Stepping back, Addy used a hand to fan the warm, sticky heat away from her face, her free hand balling into a fist that rested lightly upon her hip; it was a posture of attitude, though only slightly conveyed now by the lack of conviction in the woman’s posture. While Addy loved the birds more than anything, having a lover and a daughter that were both kin to these that Vira threatened to assist unto death, she also knew that they could take care of themselves. “Don’t insult their intelligence, Vira. If the heat is too much for them, they are capable of cooling themselves down… especially with these baths that you provided. You’re making it too easy for them, now!” With barely enough energy to convey any kind of emotion in her voice, Addy sighed and closed her eyes against the heat. “You need to leave the mountain. We can come back and change the water after we’ve cooled down a bit ourselves.”

Reaching out a hand and pulling the sodden girl to her feet, Addy guided Vira from the nesting chamber and out into the corridor; she could feel the heat radiating from the younger girl, a frown lining her features as her voice took on a scolding quality. “You need water. Now.” Taking complete control of the situation, the little healer dragged Vira along with her down and out of the Aeries, rounding the wide corner that would eventually lead them back to the Infirmary and freedom from this oppressive heat.

That’s when the collision happened; with the two women picking their way down the hallway, the small child jogging up from the opposite direction, and the heat effecting all of their brains to the point where it was hard to focus on anything but the moisture slowly being leached from their body, it wasn’t a surprise that they all crashed and went tumbling down the stairs, Addy skidding to a halt at the bottom only when her head struck hard against the stone wall. “What the petch!”

The world danced and spun on it’s side as Addy tried to sit upright, a starburst of light from the impact of her fall burned onto the inside of her eyelids, further disorienting her every time she blinked. “Who are you? What do you think you’re doing in here? Am I surrounded by a bunch of idiot Dek Lickers? Why aren't you outside, boy?” Glaring now at both the newly arrived Yasi and Vira, Addy wobbled to her feet and went to help the others up as well, the heat and the ridiculous situation making her a bit irritable.

The teenager started to resist when Addy pulled on her, removing the chick from her grasp and literally dragging her out of the water. The was really muddying her brain, but how could she just walk away?

Grunting back at Aidara, she said, "I'm not insulting her. Vala knows how hard I work for them...knows I wouldn't just let them suffer. She hasn't depreciated my assistance before." Some of the other birds: not so much. Mohya, Sino, and Irriama were the only others who really tolerated the single-eyed woman to a point that she could interact like a friend would. " 'sides, Vala can't carry the water in here as easily. S'the least I can do..." She grunted again but finally stopped resisting the tugs and just followed Addy out of the aerie and down the pathing leading back to the main corridors.

No sooner had they begun the trek down the path did it end in a somersaulting tumble over someone and onto the bottom, both letting out curses of their own.

" 'the petch, agh!" She clutched at her elbow, the struck nerve firing off its shots from arm to back and back in a series of jarring pains. "The hell're you doing up here??" The Chiet got to her feet with the Endal's assistance and leaned against the wall, still rubbing her elbow as the struck funny bone slowly receded from its pained ignition. "Ugh, don't think I even care right now." Finally outside of the sweltering chamber, the dame was starting to pick up on just how close she'd been to heatstroke, leaning there against the cooler stone of the inner pathway with head back and eyes closed.

OOCKind of a meh post. I wasn't sure what to say this time

On the way up to the Aeries, Vladr's discomfort seemed lessened. He wasn't sure if it was because the air felt cooler along the corridor or because he was glad to go do something useful, not to mention work to his benefit. Brushing aside a few damp strands of hair, Valdr rounded the corner to the last flight of stairs before reaching the Aeries. I wonder why they're called 'flights' of stairs...what an odd name ti give something. he thought to himself. I sure hope they have some water up there, I am thirsty!. Some food would be nice too...I wonder what the eagles eat? it must be alot...

The entire way up Valdr's mind drifted from topic to topic, either because of the heat or just due to the aimless daydreaming, he wasn't really paying attention to were he was going, and thus failed to to hear the tell tale sounds of someone coming down the stairs. Before he could react, he crashed into who ever it was, who also happened to be carrying some one else. their combined momentum overtook Valdr, and all three proceeded to fall down the stairs. In that mess of flying arms, legs, and hair, Valdr was sure that he had gotten kicked, but seeing as that was just another one from the many scrapes and bruises from the fall, he didn't pay it much mind.

His body hurt. Alot. laying still for a few moments, Valdr kept his eyes shut and willed the pain to go away. Slowly, it began to recede to nothing but a dull ache, and only then did his other senses kick in. "...diot dek lickers. Why aren't you outside boy?" he heard through the haze surrounding his mind. Opening his eyes, he saw two people starting to get up, his eyes still focusing. The first, the one who had been speaking, was a young woman who, as soon as his mind cleared, he recognized to his horror as an Endal. It wasn't so much the way she looked as much as the way she carried herself; an obvious air of superiority, whether intentional or not, her confidence, and not to mention her tone of voice, commanding and authoritative, a characteristic of someone who was accustomed to people getting out of her way when she approached, and who did what she commanded. No, there was little doubt what she was.

Valdr's eyes widened with shock. He heard the stories, how the Endal were the top caste within Wind Reach, kings of the mountain. While he desperately wished to be counted among their numbers, he still felt a healthy dose of fear. I really did it this time! I'll be cleaning the gutters as a dek for the rest of my life now for sure! he thought as he quickly got to his knees and bowed his head.

"I was told that they needed help out here in the Aeries because of this heat. I was on my way up to see if i could help at all." he managed to say, surprising himself with how steady his voice was. "I'm sorry madam Endal! I did not mean to run into you! It was an accident I swear." Lowering his head and chest to the ground, he pleaded "Please don't make me into a dek!" It wasn't until he had his head bowed that he noticed the second person lying on the floor. A woman a few years younger than the Endal in front of him. Returning his attention to the woman in front of him, he awaited her reply, anxious to hear what she said.

OOCI hope I didn't over step instantly recognizing your caste, I figured that the lower caste's would be able to tell when some one was an Endal. I tried to go off the info you said in you'r Vblogs to justify it. Kinda wanted to add how Valdr would react to one, being Yasi and all.

Postby Khida on October 15th, 2013, 12:50 pm

Thread Award

Lavira

Skill Points
Animal Husbandry +1
  • Better difficult work than to risk shame
  • The edge of heatstroke
  • Persisting for sake of the eagles
  • Animal Husbandry: soaking to keep cool

Notes: Lavira avoided full heatstroke thanks to Aidara's intervention, but is facing moderate dehydration. She'll feel lightheaded and a little shaky for several bells, along with persistent dryness of the mouth, until she's taken enough water back in for her body to re-equilibrate.

Aidara

Aidara, if you return, send me a PM and I'll provide your grade for this thread.

Valdr

Skill Points
Diplomacy +1
  • Abject respect for the Endal
  • Diplomacy: groveling to appease
  • Inattention can lead to awkward situations

Notes

It's a pity this was cut so short. Valdr, I graded this anyway because I see you haven't posted since midsummer, but if you do resume play you will need to update your ledger with Summer expenses and wages. As always, please let me know if you have questions or concerns regarding this grade.

Lavira, again, please edit your grade request to show this one's been completed. Thanks!
