Surprised that her assignment this period was for Lookout, Vira had not complained. She simply geared up, dressed up, and mounted up to take the flight to the mountain overlooking Thunder Bay. Her clothing was warm this time, her katinu around her shoulders to stave off the bite of the bitter wind coming in from the sea and keep herself warm as she kept her eye peeled on the skies beyond the mountain.
The weather of the season had been unpredictably insane. Some days, it was mild, a little on the cool side, with only light winds. Other days, citizens and eagles alike had to cling to the mountain to keep from being blown off by a rogue gust. Thunder Bay had begun to look less and less appealing to its seasonal residents and many had already evacuated to Wind Reach. The few that remained were the typical teams packing up and securing gear for the coming winter until the Bay opened again. Too often, storms had swept in hard and fast, throwing whitened surf across the beaches of the bay and all but hiding Thunder Island far in the distance.
Presently, Lavira stood at the edge of the stone platform with her arms crossed over her chest so that her hands could tuck beneath her armpits and keep themselves warm. Her katinu whipped out of control behind her as blast after blast of icy wind beat at her face, even blowing icy particles of water across her front. In the large cave where she and Mohya were sleeping each night, a fire was kept lit, ensuring a warm avenue to rest by when it was time to sleep. It was the job of the previous lookout to restock the stores before the new lookout took over. Any slackers were reprimanded severely and thankfully, since that incident earlier in the season with that piece of shyke Endal who'd showed her the Forward Camp locations, none of the others had given her as much of a hard time as observed by the fully supplied Lookout when she'd arrived.
But night was a ways off still and Mohya was out hunting for the evening. Vira had stopped by the Enclave to pick up a book on skinning and butchering since readying meat for consumption was not one of her more proficient abilities. The book had been simply titled and certainly appeared easier to read, but the rough script was much harder to understand. She was halfway through the modestly sized book, though and would persevere to finish by the time she left the Lookout!
In the first few chapters of "The finer points of Butchering", the book had described the nuances of your average cow, something Vira really knew nothing about. The hunters sometimes caught Takin and Takan Mountain beasts, those giant oxen-like things, but she didn't know much about it; it had also explained the anatomy of most goat and sheep that were used as food along with a large variety of common fowl such as chickens, guinea, quail, and turkey. The similarities of these basic animals to other related animals was close enough that any hunter could utilize the skills explained in the book with ease.
