[The Lookout] Don't forget to look down

Surprised that her assignment this period was for Lookout, Vira had not complained. She simply geared up, dressed up, and mounted up to take the flight to the mountain overlooking Thunder Bay. Her clothing was warm this time, her katinu around her shoulders to stave off the bite of the bitter wind coming in from the sea and keep herself warm as she kept her eye peeled on the skies beyond the mountain.

The weather of the season had been unpredictably insane. Some days, it was mild, a little on the cool side, with only light winds. Other days, citizens and eagles alike had to cling to the mountain to keep from being blown off by a rogue gust. Thunder Bay had begun to look less and less appealing to its seasonal residents and many had already evacuated to Wind Reach. The few that remained were the typical teams packing up and securing gear for the coming winter until the Bay opened again. Too often, storms had swept in hard and fast, throwing whitened surf across the beaches of the bay and all but hiding Thunder Island far in the distance.

Presently, Lavira stood at the edge of the stone platform with her arms crossed over her chest so that her hands could tuck beneath her armpits and keep themselves warm. Her katinu whipped out of control behind her as blast after blast of icy wind beat at her face, even blowing icy particles of water across her front. In the large cave where she and Mohya were sleeping each night, a fire was kept lit, ensuring a warm avenue to rest by when it was time to sleep. It was the job of the previous lookout to restock the stores before the new lookout took over. Any slackers were reprimanded severely and thankfully, since that incident earlier in the season with that piece of shyke Endal who'd showed her the Forward Camp locations, none of the others had given her as much of a hard time as observed by the fully supplied Lookout when she'd arrived.

But night was a ways off still and Mohya was out hunting for the evening. Vira had stopped by the Enclave to pick up a book on skinning and butchering since readying meat for consumption was not one of her more proficient abilities. The book had been simply titled and certainly appeared easier to read, but the rough script was much harder to understand. She was halfway through the modestly sized book, though and would persevere to finish by the time she left the Lookout!

In the first few chapters of "The finer points of Butchering", the book had described the nuances of your average cow, something Vira really knew nothing about. The hunters sometimes caught Takin and Takan Mountain beasts, those giant oxen-like things, but she didn't know much about it; it had also explained the anatomy of most goat and sheep that were used as food along with a large variety of common fowl such as chickens, guinea, quail, and turkey. The similarities of these basic animals to other related animals was close enough that any hunter could utilize the skills explained in the book with ease.

With the cow sketch, it had depicted all the meats from loin to groin, from brain to butt. It discussed how the thickness of a cut determined what kind of dish it was to be used for (to which Vira didn't really care much about; she just wanted to learn how to properly and effeciently skin and butcher an animal). It also talked about something called marbeling, but again, Vira cared little about that and eventually skipped ahead.

She found a chapter on readying fish for consumption and paused to look over this more closely. Here, she realized that like with most birds and mammals, nearly all the fish could be used (in the majority of situations; there were some species that it warned could kill the consumer if prepared wrong, but again Vira skipped this. She wasn't here to learn cooking, she wanted to know about skinning, dangit!). One simply took a boning knife (she assumed a simple hunting knife could supplement as easily) and slid the knife just behind the gills of the fish. Then, slowly and carefully, you slid the knife down along the body to the tail, removing the entire fillet from the fish, skin and all. Once that was done, you placed the fillet meat down and positioned the knife between the skin and meat. Pinching a piece of skin nearest the knife blade, you slowly sawed the knife towards the other end of the filet until the skin was completely removed. A very skilled skinner could fillet the meat right off the bones (but she skimmed past that part too, trying to find how to remove the flesh and meat from the body of a deer or other such creature).

Finally, on the second night at the lookout, Vira had found the part where it talked about the appropriate way of skinning medium and small game. With the suggestion that game should be hung head down from a tree so that the carcass was about head or chest level, you cut a circle at the ankle joint of the animal (where possible). The cut had to be shallow, just to the meat and no deeper or it would waste the meat when you began removing the skin. Then, using the knife again, you make a slit from the circle down the hips on the back of the animal; once this is done, pull this down to there and wait. Using the knife again, you cut into the animals tail being careful not to pierce the bladder. Afterwards, grasp the skin with both hands and pull down along the body the way one would peel a banana (whatever that was; Vira had made a note with a piece of coal to find out what a banana was, though she understood the concept of what was being described here).

Once you reach the animals front limbs, it said to work your fingers into the point where hide and muscle met and slowly pull until that was removed as well. Once the arms have been skinned, the rest of the hide can be pulled to the head where you can either sever the head or try to work it off with head attached. This is more challenging, but preserves the most meat. With small game, it suggested leaving the meat on and simply skewering it to roast. It was easier that way if one lacked any kind of cooking skill (which she most definitely lacked).

Vira had the chance to try this out the previous day when Mohya returned with that evenings meal for them both. It was a huge bull elk, something the teen would not have been able to carry on her own but which the wind eagle had transported with ease. Once Mohya had delivered the kill into the enclosure they shared atop the spire, Vira had set to work trying her hand at skinning and readying the kill. Mohya lay nearby watching amusedly as her rider tried to do it alone.

~I could help you, you know.~ Mohya had said to her, watching from the opposite side of the fire. But Vira had adamently shook her head and said aloud, "No, I can do it. See? I've got the circle cuts and these slits. I just need to er...get leverage...and..." She'd pursed her lips that eve when she grabbed the thicker skin and tried to pull it down. The teen grit her teeth and pulled...and pulled...and pulled. But it did not budge, eventually forcing the young Endal to release the bit of flesh she'd cut and stumble back, a hand on her side as she glared at the velvet bull.

"Come on, I'm doing it right. See? Two circle cuts at the joints...am I supposed to hang it? Or bleed it? I remember that's what Kovac had done on the Loch when we were hunting...Shoot..."

Nearby, Mohya had just chirruped at her and ruffled her feathers in amusement, rising and stepping towards her to grasp the elk carefully by the back legs and lift him off the ground, using her mind to tell the girl. She explained that the bull needed to be bled quickly or the meat could spoil. The rider had the right concept but the bigger the animal, the more work was required. In this case, the skin couldn't just be pulled off the way a rabbit or raccoons could. She educated that you had to be careful about not puncturing the gut either lest you further spoil the meat. Holding the elk off the ground she helped to show Vira how to slice open the juggulars. Once the teen had done that, Mohya simply hung the kill like that for several chimes before laying it down and returning to the sidelines to observe.

"Okay so..." She began, looking towards her bird for direction. But Vira could have swore the eagle was smiling at her, mutely encouraging her to figure it out. Cursing under her breath, Vira took hold of the skin by the leg again and looked at the way the skin clung to it more readily than it had the description in the book about the rabbit skinning process. "I just...cut it, I guess." She finally surmised, chewing the inside of her cheek and beginning the arduous task of slicing through the fibers holding skin to meat. By the time it was done, Vira was a bloody mess and the chop-shop job wasn't much better. But Mohya just clucked gently at her, sidling around the large hearth to pick at the pieces of meat still attached to the skin while Vira set several pieces onto the skillet that had been over the fire for some time, waiting for meat to be put in it.

"Petch that was hard...."

That had been two days ago. Though she was still reading the book, Vira had had to work even harder the next day when Mohya brought in a wild boar...That had still been alive. Tonight, it was going to be easier. She'd fried up all of the pork the previous night and still had some left since Mohya was still eating off the elk from that one night considering how badly Vira had butchered it. Hopefully tomorrow would provide more interesting things than cloudy ever-ominous skies and frigid wind.

[The Lookout] Don't forget to look down

So far, though, nothing had been interesting on "tomorrow" which was now today. The wind was cold and she felt about frozen to the core. Mohya had been gone all day already looking for game and had left in an agitated state. Vira wondered what was up with her, her mind pressing but the bird had only impressed to the young Endal that something felt wrong today, she just couldn't say what.

When Vira had asked if it was anything like what had happened on the 53rd last season, the eagle wiggled her tail feathers in uncertainty.

~Maybe, I do not know. Be careful around the edges, lass. Don't forget to look down.~ The eagle had left shortly after that, leaving Vira standing in the cave alone again to keep watch.

It was well past noon bell and well into the afternoon. The sun had scarcely made an appearance all day. The teen could not feel the silence of the world beneath her, however as she scanned the horizon from the platform above the resting chamber, turning slowly in the center to cover the entire horizon. As she reached the Mt. Inarta part of the scan, she noticed the birds around the mountain. This was a common sight, normally, the multitudes of avians flying around the volcano and subsequent city; except, the numbers were off. Birds did not fly en masse like that unless they were flocking into migration (which few birds in this part of the area did given the survivable hot spots of the region)...or they sensed something.

Her brow furrowing, Vira paced slowly to the edge on that side of the outpost and shielded her single eye to focus. She could make out birds of prey and prey birds alike. Then, just below the Lookout spire, more birds erupted from the rockface, launching themselves into the air together and crying out in distress. "Okay, that's weird..."

Kind of reminds me of Heshvala and-

Her thoughts were cut off when the wretched sound of rumbling emanated from beneath her and set the whole mountain to shuddering. Stumbling, Vira nearly fell as she hurried away from the edge, flattening herself onto her belly to keep from being thrown off her feet. She cursed the coincidence and crawled as quickly as she could to the ladder, twisting around and sliding down into the enclosure below. From there, she raced for the landing platform Mohya used, reaching out with her mind as hard and fiercely as she could to get the eagles attention.

MOHYA!!

The bird responded immediately, appearing from somewhere below like an arrow from a gun. She rose over the lookout briefly and then circled back in and landed heavy, screeching at the teen to get on. Vira launched into the wind again and clamboured onto the eagle as fast as she could, aware that she lacked the riding harness at present when the bird returned to the air the instant the teen was settled into the natural spot upon her back and shoulders.

Mohya twisted and dove before climbing again, joining the other multitudes of eagle and riders circling Wind Reach. Most had their eyes peeled on the Lookout, however, as the spire trembled visibly for several chimes. The awful sound of tearing earth rung through the air the entire time until at last it stopped. The stillness that followed afterwards was not much better, all birds in the air dead quiet but for the howling wind that embraced them all. Then, with a thunderous roar, a massive chunk from the mountain of the Lookout broke off and slid terribly down the side, crashing and rolling as more chunks of the earth were ripped free to roll thundering into the valley far below. Many of the Endal had altered their flights to circle the spire Vira had just come from, some approaching the pair to ask if they were alright.

When Vira did not answer immediately, Mohya pressed upon her mind.

~You're alright, Lavira. They worry; answer them.~

I will. Just let me catch my breath.

The young woman had her face pressed into the birds back as she panted and trembled. It had been a very close call, far too close for comfort really and Vira was amazed that Mohya had been near enough to reach her so quickly. Finally, the girl raised her head and waved to one of the riders who'd asked of well-being, shouting back at them that she was alright.

"I saw the birds; got out quickly."

Even as they spoke, another piece of the Lookout suddenly loosened and slid down the mountainside, leaving a large gap directly beneath where the watchers resided during their period as Lookout. It made the platform and enclosure lean ominously to one side, the horrible sound of creaking stone threatening collapse.

It looks really unstable, Mohya...there's no way assignments will be there for a while. But we need to watch the weather; as bad as it's been this season Wind Reach can't afford to miss a storm. Should we report to the Valintar?

~Yes; he will need to see the instability and assign someone to repair it, if they can. It's too dangerous for us to return right now. Come, we'll go explain what happened and get our gear replaced.~

Bad season, huh?

~Very bad...~

Notes :
Well. That was an interesting twist at the end, and surprising, I was ready to award you some poorly skinned skins from the Elk and Boar.. But then realized that Lavira probably didn't take them with her when the Lookout started becoming unstable. Good thread though! I very much enjoyed reading this. Gave me a good laugh when Lavira made a note about not knowing what a bannana was. :ninja:
