Guestion about gender and pycons

Postby Sinoa on November 2nd, 2013, 6:09 pm

Sinoa

Okay so I recently chose to change my characters gender identity from male to both male and female. Sinoas gender was an after thought when I originally created my character, I just picked a gender because it's typically what you do. I've been pretty involved in the pride community and have been friends with people of varying gender and sexual identities and I possibly because of this I've recently been struggling with my own gender identity. I kind of wanted to use Sinoa as sort of a reflection of that since it's a little more complicated to do in real life.

I was thinking of making my character discover they were inter-sex and were just assigned male because my parents didn't know what gender I was. I know this can happen in just about every living species but what about pycons? I also want to know if anyone finds this offensive my character is a fairly silly character but I don't want this stuff to be used for laughs or needless drama I kind of just though it would be something interesting to explore.

I also want to know if there is any gender neutral stuff hidden in the lore some where. I know that many human cultures have gender neutral pronouns or have third genders etc.

Guestion about gender and pycons

I don't know of any gender neutral pronouns, but there shouldn't be a problem with a pycon of unknown or unusual gender. There's probably not a lot of cultural precedent for it, but I don't think there'd be particular discrimination either, so if you want to make a gender-questioning or gender-queer character, go for it :)

Guestion about gender and pycons

Postby Ball on November 3rd, 2013, 7:10 pm

Correction: Pycons do have a specific gender, to the other races their genders are unknown, but to pycons their gender is obvious. ;)

You can be a female or a male and look like the other gender, but to put it bluntly. You can only be one or the other.

Graders Please Note :
As Ball is getting closer and closer to maxing out Pyken as a skill, I would like to request that in places where Ball is not doing enough to constitute Pyken XP if Pyken technique lores could be issued instead.

Examples of proper XP level for Pyken would be: Ball developing or refining his technique by adding new thing against an actual moving target, not a dummy.

The use of basic skills alone are not enough to accomplish XP at Ball's current level of Pyken.

Thank you.

Guestion about gender and pycons

I disagree. Sinoa can be the first of their kind to question their gender. I would run it by a mod.

Guestion about gender and pycons

Postby Sinoa on November 3rd, 2013, 11:52 pm

The definition of gender tends to fluctuate, I like to think of gender as the social construct and the sex as the physical representation which is how many in the pride community define it. At the moment my character still works as a physical male and can't become pregnant but my character socially sees themself as male and female. I would like it if Sinoa could some how register as both other pycons in a way other living creatures can physically embody both sexes which is something that occurs naturally in most living creatures. I wouldn't think it would be too much of a stretch for a pycon who worship a possibly genderless god to embody different gender identities or none at all. I know that most people are cis gendered (people that identify with the sex they were assigned) but I don't see why people would have to live by those standards if they don't want to and my question was less to do with gender and more to do with sex. I don't need to be able to be the mother and father of a Pycon child if that is seen as too much of an unrealistic benefit but It would nice if that were some how possible or at the very least not register with another pycon as ether or both sexes. I also wanted to know whether people think this would be offensive to people who are actually intersex. If you have a problem with it because you have a problem with gender queer people, trans, intersex or hermaphrodites then I don't really need to hear your opinion. I know that you don't actually have a problem with those people ball, but I don't agree with your statement. also I'm not pissed or offended or anything just telling you my side of the story.

I might go to the help desk or something as see if the'll allow this.

Guestion about gender and pycons

Postby Syveris on November 4th, 2013, 12:07 am

Hmm, I don't see the problem if your character identifies him or herself with both genders. It can happen in real life so...

I don't think roleplaying an intersex character is offensive. What's offensive is the way you can treat the subject. If you are respectful and treat it as normal, then I don't see the problem. :) It would be like roleplaying a female or male character, after all, with only different development possibilities.

Guestion about gender and pycons

Postby Alea Davenport on November 4th, 2013, 1:52 am

Gender identity aside, if we're talking about a Pycon's physical sex, then the question is how their "genetics" works. Hermaphrodites, as far as I know, are a form of genetic mutation, possible because of how evolution works. But Pycons are made of clay and magic, so that sort of biological mutation might not happen.

I don't know this for sure, but that's my take on it. Gender identity and expression are still, of course, fair game ;)
