In the bowels of the Saga Shooter Anna was hard at work, todays prospective research exciting. As always she was alone, her solitude a blessing afforded to her due to a rather superstitious crew not really wanting much to do with her. Anna for her part was more than happy to let them stew in their ignorance, though she was going to be sure to leave them a few parting gifts before leaving. The voyage had not afforded her the chance to utilize Rhysol's gifts, for fear that the crew would ferret her out. That would most certain not be a good thing, no she'd wait until a day or two before they reached the island.

However that was currently completely unrelated to her exercise and research today, which involved less cursing and more opening of portals to the dimension of nothingness. It was time for her to actually try to expand upon her abilities as a Voider, meager though they were, and create a slightly bigger portal. Today, she wanted to actually try and glimpse inside of the endless blackness to see if she couldn't catch sight of something beyond. It was a dangerous proposition, though no more so in her mind than peering out a window.

Anna knew that it wouldn't be possibly, nor wise, to try and create a portal large enough for her to physically look into. So instead she was going to utilize a bit of fire reimancy to light the opening and the space around it so that she could simply look inside. This presented a whole new set of dangers of course, the most prominent being that she was splitting her attention between controlling two personal magic disciplines.

The wizard was confident however that she could manage, the fire reimancy was not going to be massive, just large enough to fit through a relatively small portal. The act of keeping hold of the portal was going to be the challenge as there would need to be a few ticks were she focused on transmuting liquid res to flame, meaning it was going to take quite a bit of juggling to get this done. It was a difficult task, a challenge by any stretch of the imagination but Anna was confident that she was up to it.

The woman sat in the chair at her small side table, focus glyphs adorning each hand with an intricate series of paths snaking their way up her fingers. She needed to pull out every thing here, every preparation she could manage to actually pull this off. There was a likelihood that she might mess up and need to start over, however Anna dearly hoped that wouldn't occur. If everything went right, which it should, then it wouldn't cost her over much in terms of Djed expenditure. It would be a quick peek and then done. If not... things might get messy.

The first step was of course to actually generate some res to have it ready and on hand when the portal was manifested, speed was going to be critical here. Every single tick mattered and now was not the time for her to get magical wires crossed or be caught under prepared. Every angle needed to be thought out and ready, this was a test of her own ability if nothing else.

Anna focused upon her right hand, willing Djed to gather under the series of Glyphs there and push upwards. Transparent res rose from the glyphs, the action sending pleasurable shudders down her spine. It was hardly taxing, the action of such small casting in reimancy was barely worth a thought. Her transmutations would also hopefully follow suit here and be rather simple and quick.

The liquid pooled gently in her palm, which she willed to gather and stay there. She cupped the hand just in case the liquid decided to be difficult and spill, however it behaved rather nicely and stayed in the center of her raised left hand. That was step one completed, now it would be on to step two and actually clearing her mind enough to manifest a portal.

Anna was fairly confident she could get it open, however what came after would take a great deal of concentration and Djed. At the most she might get another try if this didn't go smoothly, and that other try would bring her dangerously close towards overgiving territory. Needless to say, Anna was keen on getting this down pact the first time. Dealing with aches and pains could get a little old after a little while.

With this phase done the tall woman closed her grey eyes and started to cycle her breathing, attempting to measure every single intake and outtake.

Anna took air in through her nose and out through her mouth, slowly keeping the cycle even and balanced. She could feel the liquid res in her left hand teasing at her skin, its warm significant of her own. The wizard blocked out the sensation, focused on just trying to clear the clutter from her mind. It was no easy task, considering her research on this voyage had yielded a number of interesting discoveries that she couldn't help but obsess over. The main one being her discoveries regarding shielding a few days prior to this one.

However, no matter how tempting it was to theorize and conjecture on the possibilities running through her mind when it came down to now they were distractions. Going into this particular research experiment Anna knew that she couldn't afford distractions, so each breath was focused away from them and onto the slow rhythm of her lungs. There was a reason she cycled her breath, it was to allow for greater focus within the body rather than without. It allowed her to focus on a simple function, which brought her closer to clarity.

The wizard looked the very picture of serene, which contrasted how she normally was on the inside. Normally her mind was embroiled in chaos and plots, never staying in one place for too long. She was truly a daughter reborn in the baptism of Rhysol's blood, her thoughts always at work looking for ways to please him. Lies were simple ways, however her little project planned against the crew of this ship would be a nice act of worship as well. Hopefully it caused mass hysteria, it would be a shame she wouldn't be around to witness the fruits of her labor.

That was for another time though, just another thought to be cast out as her mind was cleared of distractions. Each breath killed a distraction, bringing her closer and closer to focusing upon the concept of eternal nothingness. It wouldn't be long before her mind resembled the Void, empty of all clutter. Thankfully she had long since gained her sea legs, the gentle rocking of the ship barely registered. No distraction there to mess up her concentration.

After a few more chimes Anna felt focused and ready, which meant that the time had finally arrived. The wizard would finally learn a bit more about what laid beyond, as well as test her abilities in controlling a Void portal. With this her grey eyes opened and the woman wasted no time starting up a chant in the Ancient Tongue.

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

The incantation sharpened her already prepared focus, making things much more clear as she prepared to bridge This Side to The Other Side. Her grey eyes focused upon a singular point above the Focus Glyph she had drawn on the palm of her hand. In order to create a bridge she needed to focus her Djed enough to force matter out of a space, this was a means of manifesting nothingness on the world.

Her eyes were steeled upon the spot, her will iron and unyielding as she willed her Djed to gather under the Focus. From here she willed it into the spot to empty it of all matter, attempting to bridge the gap between dimensions. As always nothing happened at first, manifesting a portal with her fresh familiarity with the discipline was no easy task. However in a good thirty ticks, her fastest time yet, a small black dot was brought into existence.

Anna felt her Djed sucked from her as the Portal was born, the manifestations not nearly as bad as it had once been but it was certainly still draining to try and keep it open. Quickly Anna started to feed it more Djed, willing it to expand and grow to the size she needed to it to be. The more she fed it, the more the urge started swimming on her mind and nudging her to keep going. Anna pushed the weak urge aside and focused on widening it as much as she could.

The wizard had observed something interesting in her limited research into Voiding, that was that Pull tended to not only drain her of a fair deal more Djed than just maintaining the Portal but it also degenerated the Portal much faster. If she didn't add Pull then the portal could actually last on its own for a few moments, moments Anna fully intended to take advantage of.

The Portal continued to expand until it was beyond her normal size, now hovering above her palm at the size of a small ball. The wizard was pleased by the size, it would do for now and it show progress. The drain on her Djed, however, was indeed directly proportional to how large the Portal was. The larger the Portal, the more Djed needed to actually maintain it. As such Anna really didn't want to keep this going for longer than it needed to be kept going. Just a quick peek, that was all.

The urge was swimming under her mind, her vision clouding up slightly as she was shown much more potent and desirable promises than even Reimancy could manage. She felt that if she kept expanding it that she could eventually consume anything, destroy any who would stand in her way. All of her threats banished to a realm of eternal nothingness, it was difficult to resist but resist she did.

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

Anna maintained control, focusing her energy on making certain that the Portal was stable. The swirling black vortex licked at her curled fingers slight on occasion, a chill washing over the digits so touched but other than that it appeared to be perfectly stable. With this in mind the wizard slowly released control of the portal, cutting off the flow of her Djed into maintaining it.

The effects were instantaneous, the Portal started to violently shift and looked rather like a dying creature searching for sustenance. It likely wouldn't be but a few ticks before the construct started to collapse so Anna immediately focused on the res still pooled in her left hand. She needed to move quickly or lose her window of opportunity.

Anna quickly reached out mental and gained control of the small amount of res that was still pooled in the palm of her hand, willing it to move upwards from her skin and hover. She easily shaped it into the shape of a small ball and sent it drifting towards the Portal, which was becoming even more erratic. The wizard was starting to get more than a little worried, she needed to finish this quickly before the construct started to shrink.

The transmutation was a simply thing, requiring barely a wave of her hand to take place. The only problem was that transmutation, even something as simple as the small firebolt, took precious ticks to carry out. Ticks that were wasted on such a trivial thing. Normally the speed wouldn't be much of an issue for Anna however at this moment, every single tick counted towards completing her objective.

Finally the flames burst up and Anna started drifting the ball towards the Portal, only to note with horrified eyes that it was too small to take in the ball of flame and was starting to shrink further by the tick. Dismay filled her mind, which was quickly replaced with machinations and thoughts of how exactly to salvage this situation and fast. Her mind was a blur of possible outcomes and solutions, grinding to a halt when she found a relatively simple, if risky solution. It would require a great deal of Djed, it might even force her into overgiving territory but it was the best bet at the moment.

The wizard willed the flames on the outer layer of the res to extinguish with barely a thought, simply robing them of any fuel to continue to exist. This left her with a smaller ball of res, which she dropped control of and let it splash to the table below. She'd handle that in a moment, for now the portal required her attention.

The young woman fed it some of her Djed, which halted its fluctuations and stabilized it at the cost of draining her even more. Anna then focused on expanding it once more, her incantations already spilling from her lips as the urge to simply lose herself in the casting resurged with a vengeance. Gods, it felt both wonderful and terrible, like she was slipping away into a pleasure filled paradise of destruction and chaos. Only she was destroying herself.

The Void was hers to control! She ruled her magic, not the other way around. She was not some misty eyed apprentice, so easily tempted by the destructive urges of magic. She was Annalisa petching Marin! Marked by the blood of Rhysol, one who gazed into the depths of her own insanity and emerged stronger of mind and spirit!

Anna pushed back the urge with renewed confidence, widening and stabilizing the portal at its original size. This saved more Djed than having to open a completely new Portal, less Djed spent on manifesting a new one. If nothing else Anna was getting intimately familiar with the difficulties of controlling a portal. However if she could manage this new plan than she could handle most anything the Void could throw at her in the future.

After making certain that the portal was stable once more, Anna dropped control of it once more. The Portal started fluctuating again but the wizard was paying it no mind, instead gathering the liquid res splashed about quickly and putting it into the form of a ball. Again she lifted it upwards towards the portal, this time deciding to not transmute the liquid and to simply place the res inside of the Portal as it was.

The gateway between This Side and The Other Side seemed to devour it greedily, however just before the entire thing was swallowed up Anna willed a transmutation to take place. As soon as the first flame flickered the wizard dropped control of the res and immediately seized control back to the Portal. She simple maintain the current size, however in order to push the ball of flame to The Other Side Anna activated the Pull of the Portal.

The effect was immediate as Anna felt the light sheen of sweat that had been perspiring on her flesh begin to start pouring out from every pore on her body. Her head was throbbing as she struggled to keep concentration, watching as the flame was swallowed fully by the portal. Anna caught a glimpse of what laid beyond the tiny window before the flame extinguished though. She though she could see the outline of something solid nearby, but exactly what it was Anna couldn't say.

After that Anna willed the Portal to collapse immediately, jerking away from it and nearly falling from her chair as she did. The tall wizard clutched at her chest, gasping for air like a fish out of water. Blood was already dribbling down her left nostril, and at the moment it felt as though someone had taken a warhammer to her head. The aches and pains certainly far outstripped anything she'd experienced, short of her stint last season.

For a while the wizard simply sat there, trying to regain control of her thoughts and dispel the urge screaming at her to cast another spell. She had given too much too quickly, which meant that there was going to be a bit of suffering for it tomorrow. She let out a ragged sigh, which turned into a slight coughing fit. Once the fit passed Anna allowed her mind to focus on the thing she had seen in the brief tick and a half.

Something had been on The Other Side. Something solid, something very real and most likely not native to the Void. Anna wasn't exactly familiar with the Void, her little fit here was proof of that however she knew that the Void was supposedly infinite emptiness. What then had laid beyond? What existed in the realm of nothingness? Junk, or something more.

Another lance of pain through her skull halted her line of thinking, causing her to clutch her head. Rest, rest was what she needed. Possibly a big petching meal afterward. Anything to make her slightly less miserable.

Anna stood on wobbling legs and made her way over towards her cot, intent on recovering from the intense Djed drain.
