A little stroll

1st of Winter, 513 AV

Anna could feel it slithering under the surface of her mind, just waiting for an opportunity to take control again. That night, that stupid petching night with the Voices. She'd turned to her madness to defend herself, to push back the beings from her mind. The price she paid was this, the constant worrying for triggers that could set her off. The darting of her eyes at every flickering shadow for fear that something lurked there, the paranoia that Daren was around every corner, the inability to not question her own judgment over even simple matters. It was as though her mind had become a prison. Her own personal torment.

So the sorceress found herself slowly leaving the Vestibule, stepping down the stairs that led out of the Citadel as a whole. She needed to think and clear her head, a breakdown was certainly not something she could afford to suffer. Anna knew she needed to focus on something else, anything else to keep her mind from straying too far back into the black void.

Celeste came to mind immediately, however visiting the girl was cast aside as her paranoia came to the forefront. She could be plotting against her, in fact it was very likely she was. The girl thought she was so clever, twisting the Chaon's emotions like she did and offering friendship. Oh, but Anna knew exactly what the girl was trying to do, steal her secrets of course. It was all some big conspiracy and everyone was in on it, from the lowliest of prisoners in the Dungeons to the Archwizard himself.

They thought she didn't know, but oh she knew exactly what they were planning. In a more stable mindset the woman might have recognized her rather disturbing drifting of mind, how easily she slipped into the rather outlandish theories and plots. However, between her sore body and her turbulent mind she was hardly stable in any regard.

Stop. Don't think about this, think of something else.

She started down the path that led to the Docks, her weathered clothing giving her the appearance of a world weary traveler. Alright, so thinking about Celeste at this moment was a very poor idea considering her irrational paranoia. Something else then... her Wizard Examination. Yes, that was an event of rather prominent importance looming on the horizon. It was also something she had only made limited preparations towards, those scrolls she'd made could prove useful to that effect.

The woman halted on her path, taking a few deep and calming breaths. Sahovan winter was warm, much warmer than the bitter cold of Zeltiva. It was like another world entirely, at least back home she hadn't needed to worry overmuch about being stalked by mad killers. Though, at least here she was free to be who she was to some degree, whoever Annalisa Marin was anyway.

The madness was only further serving to muddy up her personality, to fracture the answers she thought rang true and call into question her identity once more. More questions, more answers that led to more questions, which led to more answers which led to more question. Maelstrom was right, questioning the questions was driving her even more insane. Yet, the madness was not terrible in some respects in that it made her feel powerful.

What had she been thinking about? Something important... right the Wizard Examination.

Rather than continue down the path Anna decided to pace, seeming to be so entrenched in her own thoughts that the outside world was almost forgotten. Occasionally she perked her head to one side, as though listening to something unseen. The sight would probably have been curious to an onlooker.

Scrolls wouldn't be enough, no no no, she needed something less conventional for the Council to fund her and supply her with her own lab. They might help but she needed something more impressive, something that showed her capacity to think outside of the box. Anna wracked her maddened and memory deprived brain for answers.

Perhaps this was not the first time she'd thought about this, Daren might have wiped her memory clean of those theories countless times. Anna allowed a slightly unhinged giggled to escape her, idly thinking over how many times she must have repeated the same thoughts over and over again. How many revelations of what Daren was had she suffered? How many times had she woken up, blissfully ignorant of the horrors she faced? Was her life in Zeltiva even real, or had that been a fabrication? What was real and what was a lie?

Anna stopped giggling, her expression changing to annoyed as she clutched her head and pulled at her hair. She couldn't keep losing it like this, otherwise her sanity was only the least of what she would lose.

The Examination. Focus on that, nothing else.

The sorceress angrily kicked a large rock, the distracting thoughts still managing to block out coherent cognitive processes. She glared down at the inanimate object, as though it were the subject of all of her sorrow and anger. The way the stone had formed made it look like it had some kind of deformed grin on its surface, or maybe that was just her imagination.

"What are you smiling at?" The tall woman addressed the rock, her grey eyes narrowing dangerously.

Of course it didn't actually respond, but the paranoia cut through her anger as she continued to regard it. What if the rocks were actually animated golems? Like the little Watcher golems that moved about here and there? Watching her move and talk, just waiting for her to say something treasonous. The Council could literally be watching her every step, even outside of the Citadel. Suddenly Anna felt a little ill as she looked all around at the rocks littering the ground.

Wait... rocks. Rocks are small. Portable, one might say. Perhaps...

The sorceress seemed to ponder something before nodding eagerly to herself and picking up the smiling rock, flashing the inanimate object a smile of her own. Yes, she had just the idea for this.

"Hmm... perhaps I misjudged you, indeed perhaps you and your fellows might prove useful to me. Yes, I think so." The sorceress mused aloud, bringing out her cloak.

She folded the tattered piece of clothing until she made a makeshift pouch, starting to pluck a few stones from the ground. The woman would cast a glance over them, not every rock was what she needed obviously. Some were too large, others far too small, it was only a select few that she deemed worthy to be taken. In the end she only took six, each large enough to comfortably fit in the palm of her hand. The stones gathered she quickly set her paces back towards the Citadel, already working through the possibilities.

The Sorceress settled down at a the first empty workspace she could find, which had actually required her to ascend to the third floor of the Gug Andjak. She cast an appraising eye over the workspace, noting nothing wrong with it the woman placed her rocks out on the table. Idly she picked the first one up and brought it up to her appraising eye, searching for anything that might make Glyphing difficult on its surface.

The stone was not smooth, but neither was it overly rough. Its edges were jagged and its corners defied logical shape. Anna ground her nail into its surface experimentally and looked at anything she might have scratched off. A fine black dusty substance adorned her fingernail, indicating that the stone possessed and outer layer that was too soft or easily rubbed off. It was thus inferior and not worth the effort.

The Sorceress carelessly tossed it over her shoulder, not really caring too much if it hit someone. Well, unless that someone was a Master or a Council Member, in which case she was far past petched. However the task of examining these stones was more important at the moment than consequences, she needed good materials. Glyphing was relatively tame, until you added in reimancy which suddenly made it less so. Combining the two with poor materials was just asking for fatalities.

The tall woman picked up the next one, the smiling rock from before and examined it. It was much smoother and her scratching revealed nothing coating the outer layer. It lacked the harsh and jagged edges of the previous one, so it looked to be just what she needed. The swirling brown and black pattern on it was pleasing to the eye, the smiling rock was pretty. It was almost a pity that to test this new delivery method she'd need to destroy it. She set it down off to the side and picked up another to appraise.

All said she'd managed to save three while the others were discarded due to various small imperfections that she deemed unacceptable. The three she had kept were all rather smooth to some degree, lacking harsh edges that could disrupt a Glyphing sequence. It was a pity to have to throw away half the batch, but Anna had standards to adhere to.

The Sorceress took up her tiny brush, dipping it carefully in inscribing paint as she grabbed one of the rocks. She'd wanted to do something less conventional, well, what was less conventional than making a deadly weapon out of a mere rock? How many people looked at a harmless inanimate object and decided to make something that could potentially kill dozens of people with the right spell and trigger? Yes, something like this would certainly show she was a cut above the average wizard, willing to seek unconventional solutions.

The question now was, how to order the sigil? Hmm... A simple scroll sigil could suffice, reinforced and strengthened by Paths perhaps? Yes. Yes, that sounded just like what she needed. Nothing too complex, no need to overcompensate. Her presentation needed to be the perfect balance, powerful, but not too powerful. She couldn't show her full hand. Not yet anyway. She was just an Apprentice after all, a mere human. Best to prey on that assumption for as long as she could.

Coming out of her paranoid delusions the woman started on the Focus, moving her brush very carefully and deliberately. Anna had never actually attempted to use rocks as the material she used for Glyphing, the idea had just seemed silly to her. However, as she did it now she found it to actually be quite unwieldy. It was a far cry from parchment, however it would have to do. She could work around the difficulties.

The inverted triangle that was the Focus came to life rather easily, though her brush threatened to veer off every now and then. To compensate for the awkward shape Anna's brush strokes were light and almost teasing. Best to be overly cautious than dead due to equipment failure. Once the Focus was done she lightly dipped her brush again and started on the Barrier.

This one was a bit more tricky as it required smaller Glyphs to be incorporated into the design, at least with her inflection of Glyphing. Her brush slowly worked the pattern around the inverted triangle, each tiny Glyph making up the whole of the ring. She included the four necessary Switches, which would assist with the Paths.

The Barrier drawn she waited for a few chimes for the paint to dry on the that side, before turning it over and starting on the Trigger. Unfortunately her Triggers tended to be simplistic, though again it didn't need to be overly complex. Just good enough to prevent accidental activation. She thought through a couple of wordings, each one being a little too likely to activate it with meaning to. Finally her brush started working as she settled on 'when this stone is thrown'. Throwing it indicated a conscious reaction, more vigorous than 'toss'. Wording was everything when creating a Trigger, it could mean the difference between success and failure.

The Trigger completed Anna started on a Barrier surrounding it, placing Switches opposite of the ones on the other side of the rock. The only remaining task was connecting them via the Paths, thus completing the Sigil. Anna carefully set the stone down, staring at it for a long while before nodding to herself. It was acceptable, though she'd need to keep at least two for when she presented herself before the Council. She'd utilize one today, only filling it and leaving the other two empty until the 19th.

First though she decided to at least Glyph the other two, just to save herself unnecessary work the night before. Sighing she picked up another stone, this one the smiling rock.

A little stroll

Again Anna drew an inverted triangle, her mind drifting back to Celeste as she did. That mark behind her ear, the one that apparently Ionu had granted her, what exactly did it do? With a title like God of Illusions Anna assumed that it was in that vein, after all the girl had created that image of her in the Dungeons. It was a good theory then, sound really. The memory of the vivid dream was still floating around in her skull, tidbits of information scattered here or there. It was possible it had all been in her head but that had felt to real. Besides her paranoia was making her rather irrational. As her thoughts drifted back to Celeste the paranoia played at her mind, calling the child's intentions into doubt.

She knows. She'll us it against me one day, or hold it over my head to extort something from me. She is dangerous.

No. She promised, gave me her word. Celeste can be trusted, perhaps she is the only one I can.

Trust is a weakness.

So is irrational fear.

Her mind quieted for the time being, granting her some brief moments of peace. Celeste could be trusted, the girl hadn't pulled away in that strange dream world when Anna tried to make her and she knew exactly what she was. The girl was worthy of the benefit of the doubt, no obscene amounts of paranoia and madness were going to turn her against her. ...Glyphing, she needed to focus on Glyphing.

The Focus was already done and now Anna was going through the motions of the Barrier, completing the sequence of the ring much easier now that she actually had some petching practice. She was going to rise in the ranks of Sahova, if not just for her own safety than to protect those she could trust and whom she cared about. As a mere apprentice she had already accomplished feats beyond most Wizards, having just survived this long was a testament to her staying power.

It wasn't enough though. She was still weak when it all came down to it, a mortal that bled and was limited in her bonds of flesh. There had to be a way to ascend beyond those limits. Her mind went to Flux as a possibility, but even that magic had its limits. It was an impossible problem. She didn't want to become undead, yet the odds she faced dictated that she needed sacrifice something.

Still, she had come this far just on her wits and magic alone. Nothing was set in stone yet, the odds had been stacked against her before and she had come out on top. The only question was how long would that be enough? The events of the previous season had exposed how very fragile she was, just a cut was enough to nearly cost her an arm. Then there were the voices... how long could she resist their hold?

The sorceress finished the Barrier and had moved on to the Trigger, opting for the same one as before. Throwing it would activate the Trigger and lead to the release of the magic, which suited Anna just fine. Perhaps it would be worth seeing if she could Glyph her sword, just to add a bit of extra protection. She pondered it as she ringed the Trigger with a Barrier, adorning it with Switches.

From here the tall woman started on connecting the two opposite points via four Paths. Anna liked to think that her tiny brush strokes added beauty to the rocks, giving them a magical look. Idly she wondered what she'd call the stones when asked, the Council would likely expect a name for her little project. Spell Stones perhaps? Considering the function? What was that in the Ancient Tongue? Bah, she'd come up with something later.

Anna appraised the rock before setting it aside and taking up the last one, starting on the Focus after dipping her tiny brush into the Inscribing Paint. Really it was much more useful than flexible than ink, honestly Anna wasn't sure why she hadn't started using it sooner. Ink took much longer to dry and forever to wash off.

As she drew the stylized inverted triangle she allowed her thoughts to drift back to the situation. When she became a Wizard it was likely she'd receive her own lab, it also meant she'd have much more autonomy to do ask she pleased. Of course, it was likely Amaryllis would still be keeping a leash around her throat. She still owed her that damnable favor, not to mention a lot more besides that. However it also meant that, if Celeste wasn't named a Wizard by then Anna would be free to assist her in her efforts. Technically she did know a few people with some sway, two Masters and an apprentice or two.

Anna ringed her Focus with the pattern of Glyphs that made up her barrier, her light brushstrokes slower and a bit more ponderous. Celeste could prove to be quite the ally, all things considered. Pandaemus... he was another matter entirely. He was rather shrewd, besides that he was indeed a Nuit. However he was useful and a potential piece to be used in her own game. Perhaps after she gained her Wizard title she'd go knocking around his lab, reminisce about old times. Yes, that might be very much in order.

Her Barrier done Anna focused her whole attention on crafting the Trigger, again making it the same as the previous two. The Trigger was the most important Glyph in most advanced sigils, poorly written ones could end up with the wizard in question getting horribly murdered by their own magic. Which was why it was important never to screw up on them, ever.

Soon enough she finished it and was on to ringing it with her Barrier, Switch Glyphs woven into its design. From here she started on the Paths, her tiny brush working well enough against the stone. Idly Anna wondered if stones created via her own powers could be Glyphed like this, or perhaps not as they were created from her own Djed. Something to look into in the future perhaps.

With the last rock all Glyphed up and ready Anna gathered the trio up carefully and prepared to head back the way she came, the Common Labs were unlikely to enjoy any massive explosions of power. The area outside the Citadel though? Fair game.

A little stroll

Once again Anna found herself outside of the Citadel, just on the outskirts of the Prairie. The sorceress felt a little less paranoid out here, a little less like there was a threat around each corner. True, the breasts of the Testing Grounds could be very formidable and the occasional distant cries of things alien to her mind made her alert. However compared to constantly fearing that simply rounding the next corner would kill her, or that she could be thrown in the Dungeons for offending this or that Master it was a much safer place. No place on Sahova was truly safe, but the Testing Grounds were far better than the Citadel.

The tall woman set one of the rocks down carefully, stepping back a good bit once it was in position with the Focus pointing up. Idly she considered using fire, gods it would feel so good to create a destructive inferno, or better yet lava. However she resisted the urge as there was the possibility that the stone could very well back fire and hit her. Being burned alive by her own magic was not an appealing prospect.

Thus she opted for air, the most it could do was blow her back. This decision made the sorceress focused her Djed beneath her tongue, willing it to push outwards with her breath. Small puffs of purple clouds came from her mouth, forming quickly in the air before her. A shiver of pleasure rose up her spine, the madness coming into prominence here. Casting always felt so petching good, even just generating res was addicting. Truly it was better than any drug, and a fair bit more harmful.

Anna continued to add res into the air, reluctantly cutting it off when a sizable cloud hovered before her. It wasn't massive but under normal circumstances it could create a moderately sized lightning bolt or knock anyone standing near it back with a blast of compressed air. The sorceress didn't really want to stop but there was that voice of reason, weakly whispering for her to do so in the back of her mind. She didn't want to stop, but she knew how grave the consequences would be if she did not.

The woman willed it to hover above the stone, easily controlling it with a few errant waves of her hand. Res control was nearly natural to her, like moving a limb. Her generation speed still didn't match Roknus Maelstrom, but it was improving bit by bit. Anna took in a deep breath, waving her hand downwards to trigger the transmutation.

The Res swirled violently, the air itself seeming to whip up around it. The cloud traveled downwards towards the stone quickly just as the complete transmutation occurred. The cloud vanished and the resulting compressed air was absorbed easily into the stone, priming it with the spell. Anna for her part was on cloud nine, allowing the euphoria of casting to wash over her as it always did. The spell hardly tired her out and made only a minimal dent in her reserves. Still, magic tended to have this effect on her in general with Reimancy being the worst in that regard.

The tall woman strode over to the stone confidently, picking it up and examining it closely. Such a small thing holding such power, it was rather amusing. An uneven giggle escaped her throat, almost like she was drunk and indeed she rather was. Madness did her no favors, her unstable mind gravitating towards magic so naturally. Somewhere in the back of her mind the Sorceress knew that if she kept this up she'd end up like Maelstrom, or even worse.

The woman curled a fist around the Glyphed stone and drew back her arm, her eyes upon a pile of dry bones not too far away. She threw the stone with all of her might, which wasn't really much, and immediately realized that she had made a mistake. As soon as the stone left her fingers a blast of compressed air was released from the stone, knocking her off her feet. Anna felt the wind completely knocked from her lungs at the impact and started gasping to try and realign her breathing.

After a few ticks the woman managed to right herself, her head a little fuzzy and her thoughts rather dazed. The stone was still intact, sitting nearby, but the inscribing paint had vanished from its surface. Anna slowly sat up, shaking her head slightly as she recovered from the unexpected failure. Glyphing could be rather dangerous if not used correctly, if she had chosen a more destructive element there was a high likelihood she could be dead.

Her first thought as she clutched the stone was what had gone wrong? What had caused a premature activation. She thought over the wording and realized her mistake, nearly groaning at her own stupidity. The Trigger had activated when she had thrown it, however she had never specified that it had needed to land before activating. The action of throwing it was too broad, to the degree that as soon as it left her hand it released the magic.

So that also meant that she'd need to come up with a better Trigger, which meant she'd need to try this whole thing over again. Frustrating, but at least she hadn't lost her limbs or been burned alive. Trial and error was the way of magic, she hadn't succeeded today but that didn't mean that she couldn't try again. The more she failed, the more she learned, which lead to the greater chances of success. It was a part of life.

Anna gritted her teeth as she stood, likely she'd be sporting bruises. That fall had been petching hard. That wasn't going to happen again. Next time she'd get it right. The tall woman gathered up the other rocks and set off back to the Citadel, intent on meditating on the problem before going to the Palsa Hydrasa.
