Anna felt lost. Drowning in a sea of despair and bitterness that was of her own making, a fact that only made it all the more hopeless seeming. She hated the feeling of being lost, it was too close to the feeling of weakness which disgusted her beyond belief. Her emotions were not just something she could just hold in check after all, yet in order to correct her fault that was exactly what she needed to do. It was rather like asking a person to build a wall around the whole of the land to separate it from the ocean, Anna couldn't just switch off. She was her emotions, they were what made her human and while they were twisted they were still hers.

Then again, they had also been the cause of every mistake she had made up to this point. If she hadn't followed her emotions Darren wouldn't be threatening her life, she wouldn't have threatened that stupid petching slave, and she wouldn't have enemies barring down on all sides. Thus she was lost, unable to not feel but recognizing why she might be better off being cold like the Nuit. It vexed her to know end, and she had plenty of time just to think about it Amaryllis had seen to that, the frigid bitch. Locked up in the Palsa Hydrasa until the time of her appointment to Wizard rank, chained here with bronze around her finger.

Anna stared up at the ceiling from her mat, not really wanting to do anything and simply just lay here becoming one with the idea of nothingness. Instead of these distracting thoughts she shifted her mind towards to Void, the very dimension of nothingness. Long bells had been spent starring into the inky blackness of the Portals she could manage to create, trying to actually understand it. Perhaps she needed to stare at it longer, to look in upon it. Perhaps that would clear her mind of these emotions, of these problems and circumstances that led her here.

The tall woman slowly sat up and positioned herself cross-legged, her long dark hair falling free about her face and her clothing her more common variety. She looked mostly the picture of good health, a rare thing to see among the pulsers of Sahova. Only the dark rings around her eyes and the slight drooping of her eyelids indicated to her true condition. Honestly being a wizard it was hardly surprising really.

Her sleep was haunted by specters of days past, often she found herself awakening in cold sweat from nightmares. First there was that girl lying on the floor of the Elements Sanctum, blank eyes starring up at her as they silently accused her of being inadequate. Then there was those horrid red eyes, shifting through her memories as she mentally cried out in anguish from everything being torn from her. Lastly there was her hand holding a blood stained dagger, vital fluid streaming down her fingers as a woman breathed her last breath in a traitor's arms.

Anna doubted that she would ever sleep soundly again, doubted there would ever be a day where the girl's eyes didn't accuse her or the red eyes didn't haunt her. Really, who wouldn't be a little unhinged by seeing what she had? Who wouldn't find the edges of their sanity fraying and their emotions starting to flare? No one could know the depths of suffering that she had fallen into, some caused by her own hand and others Lhex's cruel whims thrust upon her. She wouldn't speak of them either, lest she be seen as weak or even worse pitied by those around her.

A shuddering cold breath was taken in, tired grey eyes closing as she began to cycle her breathing. She needed to push all that aside and gain focus, to think about the concept of nothingness. Anna wanted the idea of the Void to fill her heart and soul, to take this petching horrid suffering away and let her be nothing. A fool's hope, but a hope nonetheless and on Sahova even a little hope was something.

Each intake of breath served to clear the clutter of confusion and the waves of despair, bringing some bit of clarity. She could hear her breath, she could feel her heart beating gently in her chest reminding her that blood still flowed through her body. Everything was slowly, ever so slowly, slipping away into one fugue-like state of calm, the torrent of her mind becoming placid.

The fading of the confusion brought with it the clarity of nothing, a black void in her mind that doused the fires of chaos and imposed some sense of order and finality. The Void was the beginning and the end of all thing, everything started as nothing and that was how they ended at some point. Every start had an ending and every ending had a start, the Void was both at once while simultaneous being neither. It was nothing, and in that it was one of the most powerful forces one could wield.

The concept held in mind Anna opened her sleep deprived eyes, raising her right hand and curling her fingers upwards. Personal Magic they called it, the magic of the self and the path to becoming more than the average mortal. Anna was wizened by her experiences, no longer blinded by her thirst for the arcane but rather understanding that it was a part of who she was now. It was a limb, a muscle, not something to be abused but something to carefully improve and understand. She had mastered the four elements, yet her journey was not yet finished. It had not even yet begun, for with more answers always new questions arose.

Anna focused upon that wellspring that existed within herself, on that force that made up her very identity and defined who she was. The sorceress gathered the vital pool that was her Djed and focused it beneath her outstretched hand. To control such magic of the self, one needed to expend pieces of themselves. Wizards, no matter how powerful they became, were still limited by their energy and by their Djed. No matter how powerful the master, they still had upper limits. Anna knew the upper limits of Reimancy, now it was time to explore those of Voiding.

The Sorceress focused upon a singular point above her hand, willing her Djed to empty out the tiny space. Her face was a mask of utter concentration as eldritch words fell from her lips, the language of a world long forgotten by most. It was a language that possessed power all its own, one that had few words but yet all got their point across beautifully. It was a language Anna appreciated for its simplicity.

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

The incantations in Nader Canoch repeated over and over, aiding in keeping focus as she focused upon the point above her hand. It was not until thirty ticks had passed that some manner of result was felt first, and then seen. A rush of energy was sapped from her body, her Djed being consumed to give birth to the new born Portal to the Void. A mere pinprick of shifting midnight hovered above her curled fingers, hungrily devouring her vital energy.

A tug pulled at her mind, the urge tickling her passions as she felt pleasure tingling down her spine as her breath was stolen in cold puff. It was always amazing just how much these Portals could take from her, they were so very small and seemingly insignificant. She remembered her sisters Portal, it had been rather large and looked like it could swallow a person easily. Her own were paltry by comparison but Anna felt that they could eventually reach her sister's level. The tall sorceress had experience on her side.

Carefully Anna fed the Portal a gentle influx of Djed, attempting to stabilize the new born bridge between This Side and The Other Side. Her concentration was upon it and only it, trying to keep it open was a struggle in and of itself. It was much the same as when she had been just starting with reimancy, when it had been nearly impossible to just generate res. Yet she had mastered the four elements, what then could she accomplish given enough time with the art of Voiding?

Anna stabilized the tiny Portal and the slowly, cautiously, began to feed it an increasing amount of Djed in an effort to expand it. The tiny Portal began to expand, the glimpse into the Void becoming larger and larger slowly but steadily. This was a dangerous phase as it was when she felt the heart-wrenching desire to just keep going. The urge whispered insidiously in her mind of such maddening power, of consuming the whole of Sahova in a single massive Portal. However Anna gritted her teeth and pushed the desire away, continuing the expansion until a Portal the size of her fully stretched hand came into being.

Anna felt the cold chill radiate from the Portal hovering above her hand, the cold finality of the end and of nothingness. Yet, thinking back to her experiments on the voyage over from Zeltiva, was the Void truly empty? She had recalled seeing something solid within the Void, as the flicker of her reimantic flames had died out in the vast unknown that laid beyond. Anna had caught a glimpse of what was within the Void and she had to wonder what secrets could be found floating within. Arcane artifacts lost since the Valterrian perhaps? Treasures beyond imagining? Horrors that defied logic? Really the possibilities were endless, which was both enticing and frightening to the Sorceress.

Anna felt the ever present urge in her mind, and the drain upon her Djed had increased as the larger Portal existed. It was not exactly surprising given the formula she had discovered for Voiding, a rather basic and easy to understand thing but a formula to follow nonetheless. It basically held that the drain upon a Voider was directly proportional to the size of the Portal, with additional factors like Pull being added giving an additional drain. As Anna had it at its maximum size for her, the drain was naturally going to be larger as she constantly needed to maintain her Portals.

For the moment Anna simply stared at her Portal, looking deep into the swirling black vortex of night to try and find some form of reason in it. It was rather like she was trying to look beyond the veil that separated this realm from the next, to peer between dimensions. Naturally there was nothing that she could detect from mortal sight, just darkness beyond the Portal. There was only so much she could learn about the Portals with her current level of comfort. She needed more, she needed to make them bigger, just a little bit...

No. She needed to maintain control and balance, the urge was as always trying to influence her mind subtly and make its arguments sound logical. Anna controlled her magic, not the other way around and that was how it would remain regardless of the situation. She was experienced, she understood the ways of magic and no Portal the size of her hand was going to best her. Her grey eyes narrowed as she stared at the construct further, almost like she was glaring defiantly at it.

The Portal hungrily sapped away at her strength, devouring those pieces of her identity that she gave to it to fuel its continued existence. It never seemed to get enough, possessing a voracious hungry for Djed to continue on existing in this world as a bridge between two points that were infinitely far apart. It just kept taking and Anna kept giving to it, though she was more comfortable with it than she had been once upon a time. The Void was still foreign but it was an understandable kind of foreign if that made sense.

Anna almost wanted to poke her hand into the small hand sized Portal, however she figured that as long as she had it open she might as well dispose of two rather annoying failures. The Sorceress reached off to the side and produced the two brass balls that had not done well with her limited engraving abilities. They fit easily in her hands, her hand that had summoned the Portal being made free by the construct's establishment. The Portal had to be generated by near the body, however once it was it possessed a connection to the Voider.

The Sorceress gently weighed one of the failures in her hand, admiring its lightness as a product of the slave Osd's work. Anna carefully moved her hand a bit closer to the Portal, feeling the chill bite at her fingertips as her hand neared it. Part of her wanted to see what would happen to the appendages when placed inside the Void, but she resisted as she remembered that sheet of parchment. It had been sheered off when the Portal had collapsed, who was to say the same thing couldn't happen to her hand?

Once the ball was close enough for comforts sake Anna tossed it into the Portal, with her aim being slightly off. Instead of hitting the Portal proper it hit the edge of the Portal which disrupted it. The Sorceress felt her control over the sputtering bridge slipping through her fingers, watching helplessly as the Portal eventually vanished from existence. A slight ripple filled the air where it had once been, before vanishing entirely. The brass ball clattered to the ground loudly and Anna herself was rather livid with embarrassment.

For a good little while she simply glared at the spot where the Portal had once existed, annoyed by the waste of her Djed. That was until she figured out that this was actually a new discovery, a weakness in Voiding that she had not witnessed before. Anna had known that trying to absorb an object larger than the Portal's size would overwhelm it, however she had not known that it could also be accomplished by passing through the outer edges. It brought with it a number of interesting theories for ways to fight a Voider, and Anna's anger dissipated to curiosity.

Perhaps it had been a fluke... then again the best way to find out was to try again, though Anna intended on making the Portal a little bit smaller this time. Best to be careful going forward, expending too much Djed would push her closer than she would like to overgiving territory.

Anna stood and slightly, arching her back and extending her arms above her head as she let out a soft groan of relief. She stood up on the tips of her toes, slight little popping sounds resulting in her joints finally receiving a little bit of use. The tall dark haired woman rolled her shoulders and lolled her neck this way and that to attempt to gain some further feeling. Noting that her right foot was asleep the woman shook it a little bit, flexing and curling her toes in an attempt to regulate some blood flow down there. Sitting idly for a little while could make things a bit uncomfortable, but such was the way of things.

After getting some feeling back the woman walked over to where the brass ball had landed, bare feet padding along the cold floor of her room. She crouched down on the balls of her feet and examined the item curiously, grey eyes taking in every inch of its surface. She could see where her sloppy etching marks had been placed, but there didn't seem to be any other marks indicative of it making contact with a Portal to the Void. That certainly was interesting all on its own.

The dark hair sorceress carefully poked and prodded the ball, noting that part of it was indeed icy cold to the touch. So it had obviously made contact with the Void, the question Anna wanted answered as why had it not been shorn in twain? The parchment she had placed inside the Void and closed the Portal on had been severed. What made this ball different? Was hitting the edges of the Void completely different from actually entering the dimension? That didn't make sense, though Anna was keen on now discovering exactly what the truth of the matter was.

The woman plucked the ball from the ground and moved back to her mat, sitting down cross-legged again and placing the brass objects in her lap. She then outstretched her right hand again and started up another chant in Nader Canoch, ready to evoke yet another bridge between This Side and The Other Side. As before it started softly, her voice possessing that commanding edge to it that had been acquired in serving Amaryllis.

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

Grey eyes focused upon a singular point above her curled fingers, her mask of concentration returning to her once more. She was compelled to know the truth of this matter and to test it for all it was worth, she needed to know more about the Void and the art of Voiding. It was a curiosity that marked her as a Wizard, and a damn good one if she said so herself. To gain new knowledge regarding one's magic, and then apply it though she recognized the need to be very careful here.

Her tongue peeked out from behind her lips and moistened the soft pale outlines of her mouth, disrupting the cadence of her incantation slightly. It picked up right where it had left off, Anna already reaching deep within herself at that pool of energy that made up the core of her being. Once she found this center she focused it beneath her hand before willing it upwards to empty the space above her hand, her eyes narrowing as she did.

As always nothing happened at first, it was about thirty chimes in before Anna felt that familiar tug of her Djed being pulled from her. Another tiny black dot formed in the space above her hand, though compared to her large Portal before the drain was no where near as bad upon her. She fed it more Djed in a steady stream, attempting to stabilize it before she expanded it. Without a stable link between the Wizard and the Portal Voiding was made even more shaky as Anna had discovered.

Once the tiny swirling vortex was stable Anna carefully and slowly fed it further Djed, the urge rising immediately and mercilessly to her mind. It spoke of unparalleled power, her enemies sent screaming into the darkness and disappearing with a trace. It gave her sight of entire cities being torn from the ground itself, devoured by a Portal so massive that it blacked out the sky. She moaned lightly as a wave of pleasure washed over her mind, threatening to overtake her entirely.

However she managed to pull herself from the haze of the casting euphoria and hold the link steady, continuing the expansion as she bit her lower lip with a tiny whimper rising unbidden from her throat. Gods how she wanted to have that much power, to never be looked down upon as weak or pitied again. She wanted to be respected, to be someone of note in this world that one couldn't just look past. She craved it, much like she craved the approval of Rhysol, a chance to rise above the common ranks and seat herself as a legendary Sorceress.

Anna halted the Portal's expansion once it was slightly bigger than the brass balls were in shape, her breathing slightly more heavy and small beads of sweat starting to perspire on her brow. She needed to continue on, but she kept the size smaller to conserve Djed. It was possible that this might push her to her absolute limit in Voiding, maybe even beyond but she needed to know. The curiosity had been sparked, it needed to be satisfied.

Anna reached into her lap, producing one of the brass balls and weighing it in her hand as she observed the small Portal to the Void. Her brow was knitted together in the purest of concentration, making certain that he bridge between This Side and The Other Side was kept strong and stable. The Sorceress didn't want any potential mistakes to ruin this repeated attempt at testing the limits of a Portal to the Void, as that could have fatal consequences if she faced a Voider of more experience than she. She needed a solid defense for her reimancy, this was as much a tactical assessment of possible opponents as it was a sating to her curiosity.

There is no way this was that easy. I had to have lost concentration, it would be far to easy to overwhelm a Portal by disrupting its boundaries. Things cannot just be that simple. The tall woman thought.

This particular Void Portal's drain upon her Djed was not nearly as great as her previous one, but she could still clearly feel the sapping of her strength as it continued to leech off of her. Yes that was an accurate depiction of what the Portal was doing, it was like a leech in how it sucked away her vital energy. Yet also like a leech it held some use, in this case providing a bridge between two separate dimensions. It could also dispose of waste like the brass balls, though that was being called into question at the moment in Anna's eyes.

She lifted the ball and carefully positioned it a little bit closer to the Void Portal, keeping utmost concentration and attempting to continue to fend off the urge now threatening to pound at her skull. Once she was completely certain that there would be no disruption of the Portal the tall woman counted to three ticks. Once she reached the third one she quickly tossed the ball at the Portal.

Anna watched with widened grey eyes as the brass ball repeated the exact same situation as it had before, disrupting the stability of the Portal. The connection between Wizard and Portal was severed and the construct sputtered out once more, the brass ball clattering to the ground. Her eyes were still fixed in slight shock at the space the Portal had existed not ticks ago. It apparently was that easy to disrupt a Void Portal, which was certainly rather interesting.

Anna started toying with one of her small golden earrings, contemplating the implications of this newest discovery of the nature of Voiding. Another weakness that was both good and bad for her, as she was also a Voider so she would be limited by that little weakness. However if she was up against a more skilled Voider it meant that she could manage a defense against them, well another defense. This knowledge gave her a tactical edge, so Anna filed it away very quickly.

Already her strategy was becoming more and more clear the more she practiced the art, though one had to wonder how very large a highly skilled Voider could make their Portal. Not only that, but how strong would their Pull be? Would she even have time to get off a spell before their Pull dragged her into the Void? It was a very disturbing thought if true, but Anna held confidence that at least this weakness did exist and now she knew how to exploit it. It was only a slight edge, but it was at the very least an edge.

Anna recovered the brass ball she had just utilized in her test quickly and replaced it in her lap, ready to actually get rid of them now. They had helped her to better understand the way of Voiding most certainly, but sometimes it was best to discard the useless things to make way for that which held some use. So Anna prepared herself to open a third Portal, a quick thing that she intended to open and then close once she had completed her task. She was already feeling the drain upon her personage, so she really needed to wrap this whole affair up and then eat something.

For the third time today Anna held out her hand, curling her fingers upwards and concentrating upon that singular point above her hand. She reached deep within herself and focused upon that pool of energy that made up Annalisa Marin. As she found it the tall woman started up a low incantation in Nader Canoch, her voice wavering a bit as her breathing had become heavier than it had been previously. She tiring and it certainly would show to anyone who looked upon her.

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

The woman used the incantation to sharpen her focus as much as she possibly could, at this point every single bit would help as long as it would stave off the urge long enough for her to open a quick Portal. She willed the energy within her to gather under hand, willing it upwards at the space above her hand. She wanted it emptied of everything, to become the very essence of nothingness on the world. Anna imposed her iron will on reality, she willed it to occur and thus she knew it would.

In about thirty ticks Anna felt some of her breath stolen from her lungs as her energy was sapped from her, moaning much more loudly than before at the wave of euphoria that washed over her mind soon after. A tiny swirling black vortex formed in the space above her hand, taking Anna's Djed greedily like a man dying of thirst might drink water. She gritted her teeth soon after, concentrating on stabilizing the bridge between This Side and The Other Side.

It was a battle against her own euphoria induced desires, the ones that insidiously coursed through her mind and threatened to take over. The sorceress took control though, her incantations growing louder so she could hear it over the sound of her thundering heartbeat. She needed to keep focus just long enough to complete her task, just long enough. Anything longer would place her in very grave danger, possibly inviting the overgiving she so feared. Once she had control, she carefully willed it to expand and prepared herself for the very worst.

She could feel it, the Void was trying to unmake her and drain her of every ounce of identity and feeling to simply make her nothing. Then again, wasn't that what she wanted? Hadn't she desired to just become nothing and simply feel nothing? Wouldn't it take away everything bad from her life? There would be no more accusing dead eyes, no more horrific abominations haunting her nightmares, and no more blood that wouldn't wash out. If she gave in then it would simply all vanish...

No! She was Annalisa Marin, she had reached the heights of reimancy and just as she had conquered that mountain she would conquer the magic of Voiding. She had too much to live for, for while there was so much pain in her life there was also small bits of happiness. Was she not happy when she made a new discovery? Had she not enjoyed her talks with Celeste? Had not Rhysol marked her for a reason, a reason she needed to continue living to discover? The way she had been thinking of was not bliss, it was obliviousness and Anna was anything but that.

Through sheer heroic force of will the sorceress kept control as the Urge roared in her skull, opening the Portal to the size of a fist. Anna reached down with shaky, sweating hands and gripped the metallic balls in each hand as she kept concentration. She lifted them up and made very certain to aim very carefully.

Once she had the position right the woman tossed one into the darkness and then the other, both being absorbed hungrily into the dimension of eternal emptiness. This task accomplished Anna quickly willed the core of the Portal to fill with a bit of matter and collapse. When this finished the dark haired woman promptly slumped back onto her mat.

Where before she had looked rather tired, now the tall woman looked horridly exhausted in every possibly sense of the word. Breath escaped her pale lips in long ragged gasps, sweat pouring from seemingly every inch of her body and her hair hanging about her face in matted clumps. Her head was now sporting rather pleasant splitting headache, and somehow the dark circles around her eyes seemed even more defined.

Anna smirked despite herself a shuddering a sore laugh building from inside her chest at the ridiculous nature of the situation. She, an experienced and near unmatched master of reimancy had risked overgiving for the sake of disposing two small brass objects. Gods, there was some sick humor to be found in that little prideful display.

Right now though, Anna just wanted to rest. Her stomach growled slightly, the action of all that casting certainly making her rather hungry. Rest first, then she could see about eating the second of her two meals when she finally woke up. With that the woman closed her eyes and drifted off to her first bit of dreamless and blank sleep since arriving on Sahova.
