The Easy Part (Wave Trial)

Syna smiled on Pulren's face and a light breeze caressed his cheek as the sounds of water and men surrounded him. His eyes remained closed, his wooden shield in his left hand, hanging loosely. His trident was in the right hand, not so loosely. This was probably due to the number of times he had to hold it in the past few days. The riots had been pacified but there still remained a number of Overgiven Magi on the loose. It was a fine time to take his trial and suit up with the others.

"Marsh!", a voice boomed out from behind, causing Pulren to flutter his eyes open, Syna's sight a sting. Turning on his heel, he found himself on the deck of The Two Thumbs, the Wave Guard vessel commanded by Lieutenant Rael. Rael was a gaunt man lacking facial hair, whose hawkish features and stern demeanor had launched him through the ranks to become one of the well known senior officers of the Guard. Dressed out in his uniform, Pulren admired the three crests on his shield which denoted his rank and eyed the broad sword at his side.

"Wake up, lad. I know you've been at it hard this week with the Magi, but we can't rest now! Right, men?" the many guardsmen on his ship echoed in unison, "Sir, Yes Sir!" Stepping closer to Pulren, his eyes twinkled at the sight of the wooden shield he carried. "Did you take that from the barracks, Marsh?" Pulren piped up while standing at attention, "No, Sir! I purchased this shield to practice with, Sir!" Nodding and walking around Pul in circles, Rael continued, "Nothing wrong with initiative. Arms up, son."

These words brought the shield up in position and the trident straight and firm. "Normally, as you well know, we would perform these tests at the HQ and then bring you out for your swim, but with Magi still on the loose, you are just going to have to do it today as we patrol. Is that agreeable to you, Marsh?" Pulren nodded and looked at the Lieutenant, abiding. " Sir, Yes Sir!" Seeming satisfied, Rael placed his own shield in the hands of a guardsman and drew his broadsword. The slow sound of its unsheathing tightened a breath in Pulren's throat.

"Before we begin, Marsh, answer me a question or two. First, which organization dictates our laws and funds our formations? Second, tell me two crimes which would be punishable by exile." The broadsword was being flourished in Rael's hand, most likely in an attempt to distract Pulren. However, he knew the answers and answered, keeping his eyes on the blade's directions. "Sir, we are funded and sanctioned by the Sailor's Guild. Kidnapping and Conspiracy are two crimes punishable by exile, Lieutenant."

Syna glowed over the receding hairline of Rael, who nodded. "Very good, Marsh. Conspiracy is a serious crime, indeed." As the Lieutenant took a stance, Pulren thought it odd that he would only mention the one crime, but it didn't seem so important when he knew that a martial test was coming. "Nothing fancy here, but let's see what you can do." Pulren watched as Rael advanced.

With the upper lip of the shield at the height of Pulren's nose, he could still see the movements of the Lieutenant, though his footwork was hidden. He suspected that Rael wouldn't do anything fancy as he had said, but one could never tell. All of a sudden, a clear sweep toward the recruit's side came and Pulren braced his feet and weight into the blow, the shield blocking it. It returned to his front and he thought it best to move about as well, crouching somewhat.

"Mhm." A curt sound from the Lieutenant as the sword was easily passed to his offhand and brought at a slicing angle toward Pulren's right leg. No time to move the shield, so he planted the tines into the wood of the deck, using the shaft of the weapon to block. The strength of Rael behind the strike threatened to pull the trident away, so Pulren tensed his grip. the same grip was released quickly as the blade ran along the shaft to cut his hand, though he quickly recovered and grabbed it before it fell over, jumping back for the next attack.

A chuckle trickled from Rael's lips and his wiry eyebrows waggled. The senior officer seemed to be enjoying the light spar. A few guards began to cheer and clap at the showing. It gave Pulren the confidence to go on the offensive himself, the tines shooting forward toward the body. Rael nodded and retreated, his sword easily returning to its sheath. His eyes moved to the horizon as if he noticed something. "Very good, Marsh. Versatile. Let's move on to the swim." Looking back at the men on deck, his hand nonchalantly dropped in a fashion. They moved in unison to drop anchor and Pulren lowered his arms and armor.

"I want lookouts monitoring Marsh's swim and two bows at the ready. If we have any trouble, I want that anchor up so we can pull him out of harm's way." Rael could be clearly heard giving these orders and Pulren suspected that time might be against him. He didn't want to lose the opportunity to do the Trial in completion, so he had already placed his shield and trident on the deck. When Rael returned, he was down to his undergarments, his clothes in a pile near his weapons.

"Are you ready, Marsh? If you see or hear any trouble, I want you to swim for the rock and take cover, alright?" Pulren nodded as he jogged in place, warming his legs up for the swim. "Sir, I can make it. I'll doubletime it. This is the easy part." Rael nodded and smiled. "As you wish, son, but follow my orders should you see anything." Pulren replied with a "Yes, Sir!" and stepped to the edge of the deck. The currents were calm and the wind light. He was ready. A few breaths to prepare and stretch his lungs and he dove off the boat and into the Bay.

Wind slipped by Pulren's ears as his body made a line into the water. His arms out in front at a point, he slipped under the surface with little splash, his momentum carrying him several yards before he rose to the surface. His legs began kicking once he broke through, his arms coming over in strong strokes to carry that speed toward the rock. His heart was beating rapidly, not only with the work of the swim, but with anticipation and anxiety.

Each time his head would turn out toward the bay, Pul could see the strange vessel that Rael had been spying. He tried not to focus on it too much, his energy pointed toward his destination. for all he knew, the Guards could have very well been shouting at him, but all he could hear was his breathing and the water. He had waited for too long watching others and he had talked too big about his own prowess. All there was to do was swim and swim hard.

His legs kicked up a ruckus to the point that Pulren started to concern himself with attracting unseen predators in the brackish depths below. He turned over on his back, his legs still kicking and his arms sweeping like oars behind him. It gave him a brief rest and let him surmise the situation. The Guards were indeed yelling far away on the vessel, but it seemed like good natured cheering. Turning his head over, he saw little change in the attitude of the rogue vessel. This gave him the urge to turn back over and push his way toward the rock, which was coming into view rapidly.

As he approached his destination, he slowed his rapid approach, so as not to run into the hard surface of the goal. the rocks of the bay could be as sharp as glass sometimes. Slowing himself and pulling up and out of the water, Pulren stood tall and proud, having achieved and realized a lifelong dream. Of course, it was only halfway finished now. The wind off of the bay was chilly and he could feel his body temperature slipping. No desire for cramps or slow motion, he didn't even look for the other vessel. He simply leaped out and back into the waters.

While not as graceful as the original entry, all of Pulren's energy and focus was set on making it back to the Two Thumbs and his soon to be brothers in arms. He pushed himself hard, forcing his body through the light waves of the bay. Turning over on his back once more, he couldn't see the other vessel. Had he gotten turned around somehow? Slowing and treading water, he looked about and saw the ship. It's attitude was one of turning and moving, in his direction. Looking out toward the Thumbs, he could see their anchor was up and they were also heading toward him.

His heart thumping like mad, Pulren began to push his body as if he would win the whole of Zeltiva should he win this race. His legs were tiring but he forced them to kick even harder, His strokes reached out as far as he could stretch, pulling the water down and behind him as his body shot forward. What was probably a few minutes seemed to stretch into eternity as the fear of the other vessel and its current whereabouts were looming in his mind. he couldn't let panic overtake him, though, so he relaxed a bit when his own ship was nearly upon him.

Swimming alongside its wake, a rope came down toward him and he gladly grabbed on, his only remaining strength needed to grasp the rope as he was hauled aboard. He thought to himself if any of his catches had felt that way as he landed on the deck. Out of breath, he rolled over on his back, looking up at the screwed face of Lieutenant Rael. "Just had to prove yourself, eh Marsh? On your feet." Faking the energy to do so as best as he could, Pulren did as he was ordered, looking into his superiors hard glare. "You're in, Marsh. You did a fine job and if we had the time for it, I would put you to the paces against my own best swimmer. As it stands, however, we need to focus on our quarry. Dress yourself and take refuge below. You've earned it."

Pulren nodded and thanked Rael as he gathered his clothes and weapons. He halfheartedly wanted to stay on deck, but his body said no. Shivering and weak, he slipped on his pants. Before he disappeared into the hold, he heard Rael shout one more thing. "Congratulations, Guardsman Marsh! Three cheers for our new brother!" He smiled and turned as the lads cheered thrice for him. He liked it even better that he had done so during martial exercises. Best of all was the bunk that waited below.
