L'orlei found herself wandering the shops and market areas of Mura, even venturing down to the docks if presented with a particular lead she felt worth following up. She was looking for something in particular, but was also gathering random supplies for her shop. The recent flower festival meant that Mura had a lot more plants for sale than usual, and L'orlei intended to take advantage of it.

The specific thing she was looking for was a weed called Fauxsil, a plant which could be used to induce sleep when made into an infusion. L'orlei had a buyer asking for something with that exact effect. Apparently they were having trouble sleeping at night, and L'orlei offered to help them with their problem.

Fauxsil could be found in marshlands and along riverbanks, both of which Mura had plenty of, but L'orlei did not have time to go and harvest it herself. She was hoping one of the other konti in the city had already done so, and she wouldn't have to go out into the wilderness. Thankfully there was no shortage of herbalists on the island, and it was fairly easy to purchase supplies. L'orlei quickly made her way to one of the shops she common bought supplies at, and easily enough, she was able to purchase the herb she needed, along with some others. Fresh fauxsil leaves, dried Bon'mur leaves, brinetooth berries, rhinedale leaves, dried midwife miracle flowers, and vyfox flowers and leaves were among the things she purchased. In addition, she purchased a few vials of Priskilweed

1 oz fresh Fauxsil Leaves - 5cm
1 oz dried Bon'mur leaves - 5cm
1 oz Brinetooth Berries - 5sm
1 oz Rhinedale Leaves - 5sm

L'orlei could have have just used water for the potion, but she wanted to make sure it was extra potent, so after purchasing a bottle of honeyed wine off one of the ships down at the docks, they claimed it was from Riverfall, she made her way home and quickly set to work. In truth, it was a rather simple recipe. All that was truly required was to allow the fauxsil leaves to soak in hot water, but L'orlei never liked to do things simply.

When she arrived at her home she quickly set to starting the fire, not a simple task. Despite having done it plenty of times, L'orlei was still not particularly good at using her flint and steel. It took several strikes, and a few failed attempts, before she finally had a good spark. The konti leaned in and blew softly on the tinders, and finally, they leaped up in flames. Quickly she added on wood, and some old coals that would burn for long periods of time, and then sat back and let the fire heat up.

Once the fire was ready, L'orlei grabbed her pot and filled it with the wine. While she waited for it to boil, the konti began preparing the rest of her materials, such as they were. L'orlei grabbed her mortar and pestle, and a handful of the Fauxsil leaves, and lightly crushed them so that they would release their oils easier. By the time she was done, the wine had begun to boil.

L'orlei took the pot off the fire and placed the leaves into another pot. She then poured the hot wine over the leaves, stirring them lightly as she did so. Steam and soothing vapors wafted up almost immediately, and L'orlei was careful not to breath in too much of the substance. She stirred the leaves gently for a while, and then left the wine to cool.

There wasn't much more to do with the recipe, she just had to let it soak for a while. To pass the time, L'orlei decided she would practice her magic. She picked up one of the un-crushed leaves and set it on the table in front of her, then took a moment to clear her mind and clam herself.

Her breathing slowed as she worked to remove all thoughts but the task at hand from her mind. She breathed in through her nose, the smell of hot wine helping her to relax, and let her breath flow back out her mouth, relaxing her shoulders and the rest of her body as she did so. Each time she breathed in and out, her mind quieted. It was not easy, but it was necessary to do so before attempting to use any of her magics. L'orlei was not so skilled that she could use djed on a whim, and barely skilled enough to use it with great effort. Thankfully, the skill she intended to use was the easiest of her three magics.

After a while she felt she was ready, and closed her eyes, delving down deep into the core of her being, into the pit of her stomach, where she believed her djed resided. She knew that wasn't where it actually was, it was in her entire body, making up every bit of her, flowing in her veins, but she liked to imagine that it was there, in the pit of her stomach. It made calling it out easier, and when she found it, she tugged at it, pulling it to her mind.

The healer opened her eyes, focusing on the leaf. She felt the tingle of djed there as wispy smoke took form around the leaf, the same thing that always appeared when she looked at an aura. It was the outermost part of the aura, and she had to peer deeper to see anything more.

She stared at the leaf, looking deeper into the smoke that surrounded it and, after a while, she began to make out color.. green, mixing in with the gray. Not surprising. She'd never read the aura of a plant, but green made sense to her. The green was also a smoke, and it moved very slowly, sluggishly, almost like the aura of a dead animal. Actually, it did make sense, when she thought about it. A live plant's aura would probably have more life to it, but this was just a leaf. A green one, but dead.

She wanted more than that, however. She knew the leaf was a plant, and knew it was dead, and neither aura was surprising to her. The next thing that appeared was the same blackish liquid that she'd seen on the clam she'd looked at. It meant death.. so perhaps the slow moving smoke of the green aura wasn't death, but just meant plant. Maybe different plants would be different colors? Or different shades of green, but all with that same slow motion?

Death wasn't what she was looking for, and she continued to stare. She tried to remember her lessons from long ago, and a thought occurred to her. Auristics was not just about sight. It used all the senses. Doing so was tricky, but she had been told that even a novice was not limited to just one sense. L'orlei certainly did not want to become dependent on her eyes when she could use more, and so she leaned in close to take a whiff of the aura.

There first came the mundane leafy smell of the leaf, not surprising, and L'orlei was a bit disappointed, but she would not give up. Tugging more at the djed inside her, she tried again, breathing deep the aura through her nose, and she was rewarded again with the same smell and.. something else.

It wasn't so much a smell, well, it was, but different. She could smell the leaf itself, but there was something else. It smelled like... lavender? She considered for a moment, and took another whiff. Yes, lavender.

"Well that's odd," she muttered to herself.

The leaf itself did not at all smell like a flower, so why did the aura smell like lavender? She sat back to consider. What did she know about lavender. It was a pretty purple flower, not common in Mura. She'd seen a few merchants selling bouquets, and assumed they had to be specially grown or imported. She remembered vaguely reading somewhere they could help with bloating. She'd seen lavender scented candles, and knew their smell to be relaxing.

"Wait! That's it!"

The scent of lavender could be used to help one sleep. So.. that meant that the lavender scent of the aura must have something to do with the sleep aiding property of the fauxsil leaf. The smell of the leaf itself wasn't very relaxing, but the smell of the aura was. She'd have to investigate other sleep inducing ingredients to see if they shared the same aura-scent as the fauxsil leaf. If they did, then she'd be able to use that to identify sleep inducing properties in the future!

L'orlei relaxed, letting go of her djed and the aura faded away. She was quite satisfied with her efforts, and the discovery of the lavender aura showed her how the magic could be useful in the future when identifying plants. She'd have to check the aura's of all her plants, trying to find similarities between them all. What other properties did the fauxsil leaf hold, she wondered? She had not the auristic skill to delve any deeper, but one day she might. This would prove very useful in the future, of that she was certain.

Sleep Tight, Sailor

She took a break after that, not wanting to tax herself over much, knowing that such things could be dangerous when working with magic. The wine needed to soak for an hour or two, and so L'orlei took a nap. She had pleasant dreams, of the beach, of swimming with dolphin's and finding pearls in clam shells at the bottom of the sea.

Eventually her dream shifted somewhat, and she found herself walking through unfamiliar lands, traveling the world on feet that seemed to cover leagues with each step. One moment she was in Syliras, the next she was high in the mountains, and the next she was trekking waste deep through the thick foliage of the jungles of Falyndar. She had no idea what any of these placed looked like from experience, but in her mind they were wonderful, fantastical places filled with exotic people and a myriad of sights to behold.

She'd been having such dreams a lot lately, and L'orlei knew she had to go soon. She already had the supplies she needed, and was just waiting on a chance to book passage aboard a ship. She was ready, if a bit afraid, and wanted to see the world. But first.. the wine.

The wine had cooled when she woke from her nap. She stirred it a bit, watching the chunks of leaf swirl slowly through the liquid, and then poured the infusion through a colander, straining out the largest of the leaves, leaving behind only the liquid itself. The sleep inducing properties should have mixed into the wine by then, and the leaves themselves were no longer of any value to her. There might be some potency left in them, but L'orlei doubted it. Even so, she decided it was better to save the remains, and placed them in a glass jar. She could come back and check on them with auristics later to see if they still had the scent of lavender.

Later that day L'orlei met up with the sailor down at the docks, board his ship and ignoring the stares of the crew as she walked over to the oarsman who was her customer.

"I have the drink," she explained in common, uncomfortable with the foreign tongue. "It will help you sleep."

"Why thank you, my lady! I can't say how much I appreciate this. This ole sailor hadn't a wink of sleep the past season, I tell ya. It'll be nice to lay my head down and get a bit of shut eye. How much do I owe you?"

L'orlei's response was slow, as she puzzled through the words and the sailor's dialect. One would think she would be used to the way they talked, but she wasn't. This one wasn't as bad as others, however, and she got the gist of it.

"Five golden mizas. It is honeyed wine and essence of fauxsil. Drink a small glass each night before bed, it will help you sleep."

"Thank you my good lady Konti. I'm much obliged."

The sailor paid the konti and they both went on their way, L'orlei less one bottle of sleeping infusion and her coin pouch just a bit heavier. With that, she returned home, her day done, and settled down for a peaceful dinner by herself and later a good night's sleep. She did not need a potion for that, and soon enough, she was dreaming again of seeing the world.
