The house was in complete silence when Ayviss finished separating the tools she would need. Hollard had left, early, and had ordered her to clean the house and prepare lunch for when he came back. Cleaning the house was something the woman was already used to, but cooking... This still was something she couldn't do right. Most of the time, the temporary slave Hollard had brought home would cook, as part of his or her training, but this time, there was no temporary slave. Ayviss knew this situation wouldn't last long, it never did, but in the meantime, she would have to cook.

She could cook, if there was a recipe, and there was this time. But it didn't meant that she liked to. However, most of the things she did weren't things she liked to do, so she could endure one more. Fighting the urge to sigh, Ayviss grabbed the piece of paper in which the recipe was written and read it over again, before she put it aside to begin to prepare the ingredients. Chicken soup. Hollard had enough money to eat better foods, but Ayviss probably wouldn't be able to prepare them anyway.

Clearing her mind, like she always did when she was getting ready to work, Ayviss sat down on a chair and started to peel the carrots. It took long, and sometimes she would take off a bigger piece of carrot than she needed to, but in the end, they were peeled (even if slightly deformed), and that was what mattered to her. Putting the carrots aside, she took the onion, peeled it with her hands, placing the skin on the table, and cut it in four. Then, she took the celery and cut the stalks, separating them and putting the rest near the onion skin.

Ayviss got up, took the largest pot she could find in the kitchen (which wasn't saying much, in fact), and put the chicken pieces inside it. She was grateful that the chicken was already chopped, as she had no idea how to do something like this without making a mess. And if she made a mess, she would probably spend her lunch time cleaning the kitchen. Definitely not something she wanted to do.

She cut three of the carrots and two of the celery stalks into pieces, frowning to how different from each one they looked. Nonetheless, she placed the cut vegetables inside the pot, together with the onion and salt, pouring water in the pot until it covered everything. She found it strange that the onion was placed in such big pieces, but she would follow the recipe. It was better than trying to invent something. She had just placed the pot on top of the wood stove when she heard the front door opening. Her eyes widened, and she wondered if she was really late with lunch. If it was so, she could expect a punishment. Normally it wouldn't bother her, but right then... It could ruin the plan.

But the steps weren't approaching the kitchen. No, they were going towards the other direction, and Ayviss could hear that her master was accompanied. She frowned, and looked at the cooking soup. Hollard only brought one kind of guest to his house, and it was the kind that were related to his work. Deciding it could be new and maybe important information, the woman left the kitchen, her steps light so she wouldn't make a noise.

Slowly and silently, she made her way to the corridor, and stopped in front of the closed door that led to Hollard's office and small library.

Not Such an Easy Money

She waited, quietly, before approaching the door and leaning against it, pressing her ear on the wood without actually putting her weight on the door. The only sound was footsteps as they made their way away from the door, and Ayviss breathed out, relieved she hadn't been heard. And then, she waited.

"I'm surprised you haven't heard of the bounty on the snakes, Hollard! What kind of trader are you?" an unknown voice said, clearly masculine. Loud, too.

"The kind that has more important things to do than chase reptiles." Hollard answered, and Ayviss could notice he was angry with something. "And lower your voice. I have a snake here in the house, in case you haven't noticed."

Ayviss flinched, not by the fact that she had been called a snake, but because of the loud laugh that filled the room.

"Come on, Hollard! She isn't stupid enough to come listen!" Ayviss heart pounded in her chest when she heard heavy footsteps approaching. Quickly, she took long steps back, going further down the corridor, pressing her back on the farthest corner just when the door opened. The woman held her breath, unable to move, just staying quiet. The corridor's corners were dark, but it was still day, and if someone looked directly at her, she would be seen. However, the door closed again. "Told you so!"

Ayviss didn't heard what Hollard answered, but her owner must have ordered him to be quiet, because she couldn't hear anything anymore. But she stayed on the corner, quiet, waiting, counting the ticks on her head. Only after five chimes had passed did she dared to walk towards the door again, very slowly and as quiet as she could. Ayviss pressed her ear against the door again, carefully, trying to hear. The words were lower now, but she could still understand them.

"I'm telling you! It's a great opportunity for big money."

"No one would pay a good price on a snake." Hollard answered, annoyed. "They make awful slaves. Besides, the one I have isn't a full one. They are very different. I won't risk myself because you are so eager to sell those freaks."

"Fine, fine." the amusement still hadn't gone away from the stranger's voice, even after having his request denied. "Then just let me capture one, bring it here, and we split the reward. Come on, it's 50 golden ones for doing practically nothing."

"Each Iyvess, 50 golden mizas." Hollard said, and the other must have agreed, because he continued. "Fine. You better not make me regret this."

Ayviss straightened herself, and went straight back to the kitchen. It would probably be a while before they left the office, but she wouldn't risk it. Thinking, she began to sort out the information on her head. Iyvess were Dhani. Ayviss had heard of them earlier in the season, fragments of things Hollard let escape. However, it was only now that she understood what Iyvess were. She frowned. They were new, weren't they? Or maybe they were new only in Sunberth. But then, more importantly, was the fact that Hollard would take one home. That was something she could use.

When she reached the kitchen, her eyes went big. The water was boiling, and dripping on the stove. She ran towards it, covering her hands with pieces of cloth and taking the pot off the stove and placing it on the table. A small layer of foam covered the top of the soup, and Ayviss grunted, annoyed, before she proceeded to take it off with a spoon. She only hoped the flavor wouldn't be ruined.

When she managed to take all the foam out, she proceeded to take the chicken pieces out with the same spoon, placing them on a bow. When all the chicken was separated, she took another pot and poured the broth on it, stopping the vegetables to fall with the spoon. She then took a bowl and placed the discarded vegetables on it. They probably tasted awful, but it was still food, and she wasn't sure she would be allowed to eat once Hollard saw the mess in his kitchen. So she hid the bowl inside one of the cabinets. She could take it out and eat it later, or throw it away if she was allowed to eat.

Ayviss returned the broth to the bigger pot, before taking the remaining carrots and celery stalks and slicing them. The slices were just as deformed as the pieces she had chopped for the broth, but it was slightly presentable. Enough not to earn her a punishment, at least.

Finally, she placed the pot once again in the stove, before taking the chicken pieces and shredding it with her fingers. It burned a little, but she didn't have time to wait for it to cool down. When a few chimes had passed, she added the chicken, and closed all the dampers on the stove. She managed to put the soup in two bowls and bring it to the living room table, together with two spoons, before Hollard appeared on the doorway, followed by a huge man with scars running over his entire face. His eyes were blue, piercing, and his mouth seemed slightly twisted upwards on the left corner. His black hair was messy, the tips touching his shoulders.

"Hmmm, it smells good!" the guest said, mockingly, and sent Ayviss a mischievous smile, his blue eyes running over her body. The woman bit her lip, disgusted, and turned away, returning to the kitchen. Hollard stayed quiet the whole time, and she took this as permission to eat.

"So, Hollard..." Ayviss heard the man say, as she put the remaining of the soup on her bowl. "What do you think about lending her to me for a while?"

Ayviss closed her eyes, hard, feeling disgust wash over her. It wasn't really uncommon. Hollard had "lend" her to his guests many times before, and every single time she wished she was dead for a moment, before shutting her mind out, and just letting the moment pass.

"Maybe some other time." Hollard answered, and Ayviss opened her eyes again, looking over her shoulder to the kitchen door, surprised. True, she had saved Hollard's life not so long ago, but she wouldn't expect him to deny something like this to a guest.

"Oh, come on, Hollard! A man has needs!"

"And your needs in the moment are to find an Iyvess and capture it, Telgor." the other answered, his voice even. "I'm telling you, another time, and she is all yours."

Whatever the excuse was true or not, Ayviss didn't care. She had escaped for now, and it was all that mattered. She finished her dish, and waited for the sound that indicated they both had left. When the door closed, the woman got up. It was time to clean everything.

Not Such an Easy Money

She had cleaned everything, and there was nothing else to be done. They would likely take a long time. An Iyvess wasn't easily captured, Ayviss was sure, otherwise they wouldn't put a bounty of 100 golden mizas for each one of them captured alive. So that meant she had quite some time before her owner and his friend returned. How she could use them was entirely up to her.

There were many things she needed to do. To win Hollard's trust so she could take revenge on him was only one item on the long list. The most important, of course, but she had to plan on how she would live once she actually escaped. She knew it would be impossible to just walk away from Sunberth, and because of that she needed to survive during her stay on the city. That meant food, shelter, defensive skills, and maybe even a job, so she could buy the things she would need to get away from the city and the memories once and for all.

Her mind set, Ayviss returned to her room, taking the dagger from below her pillow. She looked at the weapon, the memories of the cuts she had suffered seven days before still fresh on her mind. There were things that were just impossible to train and learn inside the house, but she could still learn how to handle the dagger without cutting herself.

For the moment, Ayviss only weighed the weapon in her hand, feeling it, trying to get familiar with its weigh. The dagger wasn't heavy, and the handle was big enough that she could close one hand around it comfortably. Two, like she had done before, was another matter entirely. It felt safer, because the woman was sure she wouldn't let the dagger fall, but at the same time, it also hindered her movements when she tried to trust it clumsily in the air. So she would just have to learn to hold the dagger, firmly, with one hand.

Ayviss held the dagger with her right hand, and just made circles in the air with it, feeling how it felt. Weapons were foreign in her hand, and she knew it would take a while for her to grow used with the feel. Until them, she supposed she would just have to keep herself out of trouble.

Bringing the blade closer, she ran a finger on the flat part of the blade. It was cold, and not totally flat. Ayviss could feel and see a small depression in the middle, and wondered what it was for. Well, she could find that out later.

Taking a deep breath, Ayviss pressed her finger lightly on one of the sharp side. She needed to know how much strength she had to put on it for the blade to be able to cut skin. There certainly were other ways to find that out, but Ayviss didn't exactly have access to them. Probably. She winced, before pressing a little harder, until a thin trail of blood appeared on her hand.

"Damn!" she groaned, before biting her lip. It took a little more effort than she had first thought it would, but the blade was really sharp. The cut was superficial enough that it would heal quickly, and Ayviss could always blame it on some kitchen knife

Ayviss became still when she heard the door opening loudly, Telgor's voice reaching her ears easily. She quickly cleaned the blade on the back of her hand and put it under her pillow again, rushing to the bathroom so she could clean her hands before appearing on the living room.

Not Such an Easy Money

Postby Ayviss on November 4th, 2014, 10:45 pm

Ayviss arrived at the living room, eyeing the man on the floor. She had heard about the Dhani from her mother, but never seen one before. He looked fairly normal, his messy blond hair covering most of his face, but still... Ayviss wouldn't say he was a Dhani. His face had blood on it, and most skin that wasn't covered by clothes had bruised on them. She could be sympathetic of him, knowing how much it would hurt, but she had no interest on him, except for what she could use him for. Her mind began to think of all the possibilities, as she eyed the tied Dhani. Nothing occurred to her. The man wouldn't be helpful at all for advancing her plan. However...

From the corner of her eye, she watched as Hollard and Telgor discussed on when they would take the Dhani to receive the bounty. Ayviss smiled. She could have a little fun, nevertheless. Looking at the man on the floor, she waived her hand to caught his attention, watching to see if either Hollard or Telgor would see it. They didn't

"I will help you. Tonight." she mouthed, no sound coming out of her mouth. The Dhani looked confused, and so, she repeated it three times before the man's eyes widened and a thin smile appeared on his lips. He nodded.

"What is it?" Hollard asked, coming to stand near her, his face hard.

"One snake fancies another." Telgor said, and Ayviss wished she could just punch his face, right then. But she would take her little revenge later. Now, she stayed quiet. Hollard looked at her for a while, before waiving. She knew what that meant.

Slowly, Ayviss made her way to her room. Hollard didn't wait for her to leave before turning to Telgor.

"You watch him tonight. Tomorrow, we take him to Tua."

"Why me?" Telgor groaned.

"Because I can't stop him if he tries to run..."

And then, Ayviss couldn't hear Hollard's low words anymore. But it didn't matter, she heard what she wanted to. The woman smiled, licking her lips in anticipation. Telgor hadn't really done something wrong to her, but still, the temptation to mess with him, to just see him get into trouble, was just too great. Ayviss wondered for a moment when she became like this, seeking to see others fall just because of something minor. It didn't really mattered. She had learned long ago that only those who looked out for themselves survived, and endured the pain. Telgor was nothing to her, and if he annoyed her and she could get him back for it, she would.

Closing her room's door behind her, she sat down, and waited for the night.

Not Such an Easy Money

Postby Ayviss on November 4th, 2014, 11:17 pm

It was late when Ayviss finally opened her room's door again. She waited, and listened to any sound that would indicate that someone wasn't sleeping. However, the house was quiet. Carefully, she walked towards the living room, each step carefully taken, so she would make no sound. Every time the floor creaked, Ayviss winced, and waited, not daring to move. It happened more times than she would have liked, eight times before she reached the living room, and two before she reached the Dhani on the ground.

Telgor was snoring on a chair, his arms crossed, his mouth wide open. It was disgusting, and Ayviss turned her attention to the man on the floor, and saw that there was a rope around his neck, tight. Telgor was holding the other end, and Ayviss waited, afraid to scare the Dhani and wake up Telgor. After a while, she touched the man's shoulder, lightly. He awoke instantaneously, his eyes widening for a moment before his body relaxed. Too much trust.

Approaching her lips to the man's ear, she whispered.

"Wait for me to scream. When I do, ignore all I'm saying and run. Do you understand?" Ayviss waited for the Dhani to nod, before taking the dagger she had brought under her clothes and cutting the ropes around the Dhani's foot and hands. "Hide them."

The man obeyed, curling up in a way that his wrists and foot would be hidden from view. Ayviss waited until the Dhani was ready, and hid the dagger under the couch, making sure the other wasn't looking. It was risky, leaving her weapon in a place so unsafe, but it would be worse if Telgor found it.

Getting up, she walked to the huge man sitting on the chair, making a soft thump each time she placed her foot on the floor. Telgor didn't even move, and Ayviss sighed, wondering why she had even bother to try not to be heard before. Taking a deep breath, she reached out and touched one of the man's arms.

He woke up, his eyes focusing quickly on the Dhani in the floor, before glaring at Ayviss. He smiled, the same mischievous smile from before. The woman wondered why some man were such slaves from their own desires.

"I feel lonely." she said, and bit her lip, annoyed at her own bluntness. It was so obvious what she was doing, no subtly at all. She would need to work on that.

"Really eager, are we not?" Telgor said, mockingly, before getting up and tying the rope on the sofa's feet. It was a tight knot, and there was no way the Dhani would be able to undo it. But the rope that was around his neck was the same that was around his foot and hands, and Ayviss had cut it. He would be able to free himself.

Telgor placed his hand on her back, guiding her to the corridor. Ayviss sent a quick glance at the Dhani on the floor. He was looking at her with wide eyes, hope and gratefulness written all over his face.

Stupid. Ayviss smiled to herself while walking back to her room. What she was doing now, was only for herself.

Not Such an Easy Money

Postby Ayviss on November 5th, 2014, 11:44 am

Telgor guided her into her room, as if he was the owner of the house. His whole demeanor was annoying, but Ayviss followed quietly, a small smile on her lips. She sat on her bed, a simple mattress on the floor, and waited until the man was on top of her, his hand touching her hip, before she drew a deep breath.

"Help!" she screamed, as loudly as she could, trying not to laugh at the confused look on the man's face. A look that soon changed to one of anger.

"You petching snake!" Telgor growled, his fist connecting with her face. It hurt, a lot, and Ayviss felt tears of pain reach her eyes. Her face throbbed with pain, and it would easily form a bruise later on. Good. She had expected an outburst of anger, being denied what he wanted when he was so close to get it, but she hadn't really thought the man would be stupid enough to hit her. It only helped.

"Hel.." before she could finish, Telgor covered her mouth with his hand, his fist connecting with her face once again.

"Shut up!" he growled. "What is your petching problem? You came to me, all willing, and now you think you can just walk away?"

Ayviss kicked and twisted, trying to hit the taller man with all her strength. It was all for show. She knew Hollard had waken up to the scream, and she knew she would be 'saved' before it was too late. But still, she fought. Her nails scratched Telgor's cheek, and the man groaned in pain, before preparing to hit her once again, while trying to keep her still.

"Telgor." the low and menacing voice made the bigger man stop, and look over his shoulder. Hollard was in the doorway, arms crossed, his face twisted in anger. It was frightening, and even though Telgor was twice Hollard's size, Ayviss felt him cower in fear for a tick.

"She was the one who came to me!" Telgor said, and Ayviss wasn't surprised that he sounded so much like a child. "I haven't done anything wrong, you know! I..."

"I don't care who came to whom first. Even if she had danced naked in front of you, you shouldn't have left the Dhani alone."

"I tied him." Telgor said, weakly, finally releasing him and leaving the room. Hollard followed him, and Ayviss hoped that the Dhani had managed to escape as she followed the two man to the living room.

"You idiot!" Hollard said, sounding tired. The rope was still tied to the sofa, but the end that was supposed to be tied to the Dhani's neck was empty. Ayviss was glad that he hadn't been stupid enough to leave the pieces of rope she had cut out on the floor. "You make me run through the whole city searching for some snake and just let it leave like that. You know, you just lost yourself a night of sleep." before Telgor could protest, Hollard continued. "You will go out, search for another two Dhani, and take them to Tua. Then it's a hundred for me and a hundred for you. If you get only one, it's only a hundred for me. Are we clear?"

"I'll kill that petching snake." Telgor growled, eyeing Ayviss with a murderous glare. She cowered, involuntarily.

"You won't touch my slave again, Telgor." Hollard said, his voice calm. "You left the Dhani alone. You lost us money after talking me into this stupidity. Get out now."

Ayviss relaxed, as soon as Telgor growled again and left the house, closing the door forcefully behind him. Hollard hated to lose money, and more than that, he hated to lose a slave. Ayviss supposed it made him feel like he wasn't good at his job. Well, she didn't care. What she cared about was that Telgor had been punished, and she supposed he would be again, if she knew Hollard well enough. But she would probably be, too. Hollard turned to her, his eyes narrowed.

"You should consider yourself lucky that you are useful to me." he said, and Ayviss supposed he was talking about when she saved his life, and wondered if this meant he was willing to put up with her a little more than he had been before. "No food for you tomorrow."

It was a relatively small punishment, and Ayviss waited for him to leave the room before sitting on the couch. She waited half a bell before reaching for dagger and hiding it under her clothes. Quietly, she made her way to the kitchen, grabbing a carrot and a cucumber. Less than ideal, but Hollard wouldn't miss them, and Ayviss wouldn't have to spend the whole day without eating.

She returned to her room, closing the door behind her and safely putting the vegetables underneath her pillow, together with her dagger. She would have to take them away again tomorrow, because Hollard always searched around her room when he forbid her to do something, but if she woke up earlier than him, that wouldn't be a problem.

Ayviss smiled, laying down and staring at the ceiling. Her cheek was still hurting from the punches, but it had been worth it. Telgor wouldn't be allowed on the house again, and she would be free from ever having to sleep with him. And on top of all that, she still found out that saving Hollard's life had been very productive. Not that she thought that it was enough, but it was a start.

Satisfied, she closed her eyes, sleep slowly claiming her.
