2nd Summer 514AV

Azira had found herself in the Enclave, somewhere that she did not frequent as often these days. She had come with a purpose in mind, not a very specific one really but she had not wandered into the place aimlessly. She needed to improve her hunting. There wasn't always the opportunity to use a bow when hunting so the huntress was hoping to investigate some trapping techniques. She'd found them useful before when she'd utilised them although they sometimes did have their drawbacks. Still it was better to leave a trap set up and come back to it later after a fruitless hunt to find that you'd bagged something. It didn't always happen like that but it was better to have more than one way of bringing in game.

The Avora had been to the Enclave on numerous occasions before and she liked to think that she had a good idea of where everything was, or at least the stuff pertaining to hunting. The teen set about searching the shelves, searching for something that appealed to her. There were old diaries, there were collections of paper that had been put together by the librarians and given a protective binding, there were scrolls that looked ready to fall apart at any time. It could sometimes be difficult to find something specific, some pages pertaining to one thing jumbled up with pages concerning another but the teen found a small book that seemed to have been put together by the Enclave librarians. There were a number of librarian notes on the inside cover that seemed like a different language to the Inarta but she assumed that they made sense to the people who were supposed to read them. According to the inside cover it contained information about nets.

The teen carried the small volume to a table and set about searching for the relevant information. It was a bit of a jumble of different hunting information from the prevalence of certain animals to bow maintenance but she found what she was looking for when she came across a section filled with diagrams of nets. The drawings had been carefully drawn out, tiny writing crammed into every available space around them. It would no doubt be tricky to decipher it all but it seemed to contain a wealth of information. From what she could see it seemed to describe how to actually make nets.

Did she have a use for such a thing? Perhaps she could cover the exits of rabbit burrows with them, provided that she could make the things. Even if she couldn't find a use for netting, the book seemed to contain a lot of information and the huntress wondered how she hadn't come across it before. It would occupy her for a number of days no doubt so just the one book would do her for now.

Walking past the librarians with the book in hand, she waved it in front of them to show that she was taking it, briefly being called over so that they could make a note of what the book was before allowing her to leave with it. The huntress headed straight to her room, eager to look through it and maybe try her hand at this net making.

Hunting Ties

The huntress went straight back to her room, making herself comfortable on her bed with a length of rope from her pack. She sat cross legged and propped the book open so that she could see it easily in the current lighting. She opened it, flicking to the correct pages on the net making. Her eyes skimmed over the different images and it seemed easy enough. She could just start working on a net and work it out as she went along. She already had the rope that she needed and she should have some sort of foundation to begin her net on. Squinting to read the small handwriting, she saw that the writer had suggested a straight piece of wood. There was no straight pieces of wood around the place as far as Azira knew. If she went outside then she could probably find some but it seemed like a lot of effort to go to learn how to make a net.

Her eyes moved about the room as if hoping to fall on some object that could provide her with what she needed. Her gaze rested on her quiver where it was propped up against the wall beside her door along with her short bow. Arrows were made with fairly straight wood and she could use one of the shafts to use as her foundation stick. The head and fletchings would have to be removed of course, which would make it useless but it was just one arrow after all; she had others.

Azira was moving towards it before she'd even had a chance to really think about it. One of the wooden missiles was plucked out, the head jerked off and flung back into the quiver, the fletchings removed with more care but dropped in to join the other part she'd already taken off. Her newly made foundation stick was carried back to her place on the bed. So she had a foot and a half of wood to work with, give or take an inch or two. That seemed like a good size to her. You could have one side of the net that size and the other side would have to be longer. She frowned. Maybe the foundation stick wasn't long enough. She'd have to move it as she worked, either that or ruin a second arrow.

The assumption was made that the length that she had would work just fine and so the huntress bent over her book again to decipher the bird scratchings that passed as minuscule writing. The foundation was stretched across her knees but with space below it for the rope to dangle in as she read the instructions through with a frown. She read them through once more before she picked up one end of the rope and looped it over the foundation stick and away from herself so that it went behind it. Keeping a hold of that end she pushed the rest of the rope over the stick to pool below it until she reached the other end which she held letting a few inches of it to dangle.

The working end was pulled from the right to the left, crossing in front of the tail end that she held in place and brought behind the foundation stick again. Over the top and brought towards her came the rope before she brought it down again, pulling it back behind the loop she'd already made. The diagram and her handiwork were scrutinised and compared to make sure that it was right before she pulled it tight. The tail end was caught in the knot but she looped it around itself and tied it just to be sure that it wouldn't unravel. She looked at the book and then at all the empty space to the left of her knot. The knots were going to have to be done all the way along its length. The Avora sighed. This was not going to be a quick job.
