Ledger :
-3 GM for Specialty Tincture (Bottle)
87th of Winter

The nightmares were back.

Of all the things that troubled Hirem, nothing hurt quite as much as that simple fact. At first he refused to believe it, thinking perhaps that it was the product of a bad meal or a restless evening, that he couldn't possibly be slipping back into the state he was in the summer prior. I was cured, he thought, thinking of the relatively peaceful fall. And even though this winter had been difficult at times, he had still been able to get full, restful sleep. He hadn't been living in fear of a dream. He thought that Nysel had been protecting him. But now, that faith was coming undone at the seams.

The nightmares were back, and they were worse than ever before.

Hirem knew, as he stepped out of the Alements tavern and into the quiet night around, that the looked half-dead. The deep, black bags under his eyes had grown considerably, making him perpetually exhausted. Worse, he felt perpetually exhausted, unable to get a wink of sleep in at least... the days felt too long to track. Five nights, he realized with a lurch of his stomach.Five nights I've gone without sleep. He had managed to sneak a few light naps into his daily routine, but whenever he settled in for a night's rest, the nightmares clawed into his heart and brought him screaming back into the waking world. Every step of his felt unsteady, the world dizzy all around. He felt as if he might just collapse and fall unconscious at any moment, and might have welcomed that relief if he thought it might work to soothe his nerves.

Outside of Alements, the sky was pale and the winds were warm, a sign of the winter's end. Glad to finally have some heat in his tired bones, Hirem closed his eyes and breathed deeply, clenching the small bottle he had wrapped in his hand. It was a bottle he had hoped never to procure from Caelum again, but with the nightmares having wreaked on him a terrible sickness, he had grown desperate. The Ethaefal's tincture was the only balm for his symptoms that he had managed to find, although it did little for the cause of his disease. Thankfully, the tavern had been completely empty at this late hour, allowing Hirem some peace from the public eye. He was too ashamed to be seen by his fellow Rivarians in this state.

Letting out a deep breath, the Benshira stepped out into the dark city street and took a swig of the tincture. The immediate reaction he had was nausea, and he almost collapsed to his knees after the heady drink passed through his lips. But Hirem managed to stand his ground, letting the tincture work its magic on his shaking body.

As his trembling finally stilled and he was able to get some peace back into his system, Hirem cast his mind towards his many troubles. This season had started out well enough, and deteriorated one step at a time until it reached... this. He figured that if he tried to sort out his problems and work through them individually, he might be able to work through the stress that was causing the nightmares. But even the thought of trying to do that made the Benshira fell sick, and he put a warning hand on his stomach. Calm down, he told himself, wary of being pushed over the edge of comfort. All you need to do is just bring them to mind. One at a time. You're suffering enough from these many problems, surely you can just name them? Walking into the street and massaging his brow with his thumb, Hirem tried to categorize everything that was causing him harm.

Firstly, there were the nightmares. Claws cutting through my flesh like ribbons, blood oozing from my eyes. The darkness growing oppressive all around, lights within taking on a sinister gleam. Red and blacks swirling about until I cannot see the path ahead of me, and I fall into a pit of thorns. Madness all around, taunting at me, laughing at me and eventually laughing alongside me. Hirem had no idea why he was experiencing this relentless torment once more, but he knew that he would not survive it for much longer. It frustrated him to think that he had come so far in this city of healing, and yet was still being laid low nightly by his imagination. But there was nothing he could do about it now, since he did not attempt to think of a cure.

Secondly, there was his growing awareness that he was becoming dependent on alcohol. The thought brought him distress, but he knew that he could ignore his constant consumption of ale. At first it had just been a drink or so every other fortnight, in the interests of experimenting... after all, he had not drunk anything alcoholic in over ten years. But as the season wore on, the visits to the tavern had become more frequent, and Hirem's purse was becoming increasingly bare. Every time he had a drink, it brought him one step closer to near oblivion, and he kept pushing himself to that edge without thought of the consequences. And then, five nights ago... he had reached it. He had reached it and the knowledge of that ashamed him.

And he had been drinking that night because he had a son.

Hirem's steps came to a halt, every part of his body clenching at once. I have a son, he remembered, having tried very hard up until now to forget that fact. But it was impossible for him to doubt anymore that Timothy, the boy he had met earlier this season, was indeed his child. He possessed the green eyes of his mother, wore Hirem's own childhood bracelet, and his age was... too convenient to ignore. For the past twelve years, Hirem had had a son. For the past twelve years, long before Hirem ever went out into the desert in search of Yahal, he had possessed a family that he neglected. While he had been suffering in the Burning Lands, languishing in an Ahnatep jail, trapped in Hai... there had been a little boy, wondering where his father was, that ended up getting sold into slavery. And if Tim had ended up in Kenash and then Riverfall, it begged the question - what had happened to Stella?

Hirem knew that she was dead.

The only woman he had ever loved was dead, and he didn't get a chance to see her in over twelve years.

And when he thought of Stella, he thought of Marion, and the damnable woman's magic, and the practice of magic in general, and the Cytali, and Kavala, and the Ruv'na, and...

"Petching benachags," he hissed, slamming his fist into the nearby building and sinking to his knees. He didn't know who he was cursing - the Eypharians? Himself? The gods? Finally, Hirem found the target to direct his rage upon, his teeth grinding together. Glaring up at the pale sky, the Benshira began to whisper under his breath. "Lhex, I have never once offered you a prayer, and for that I am sorry. But what you have done to me... what has been done to me and my son by you and your ilk... that cannot be forgiven. Do you understand?" He knew in his heart that he didn't mean his angry words, but couldn't stop them from tumbling out of his mouth. "You cannot do this. You cannot break men apart like this. You cannot... cannot... oh please," he begged, hanging his head low. "Please tell me what I can do. Tell me how I can fix this. Tell me what must be done so that I can reverse my fate. Just give me back Stella. Give me back Tim when he was a child. Let me take care of them the way I should have done years ago."

"What a cruel being he is, the one known as Fate." Evalin's soft voice whispered from the darkness as she approached from the shadows on her way to the Alements herself to begin her nights work. Dark cloak and hood pulled up, the Immortal's eyes fell on the man that prostrated himself before her as he had done not but five days before. Around her neck twin scarves were wrapped, each with a wooden head shaped like a snake attached to the end, situated so that they would lay down the front of her chest. Her fingers curled around her ever present staff, and there on her right ring finger was a ring of white, clearly made of bone.

"A most foul, and despicable being who cares not for the trials of men and takes pleasure in toying with the lives of all in this world." Evalin continued, stepping closer until she looked down upon Hirem from the darkness of her hood, "Even if you pray, calling loud and long, he will not hear your cries. He cares for them not."

For the first time since she had met the pathetic man, Evalin was genuinely curious. She could almost feel the ache in his heart and the despair in his voice, so similar to her own more than 200 years ago. For a tick the Immortal wondered if she should do him the kindness of putting him out of his misery... But no, that was not who she was any longer. Instead she knelt down, raising a hand both to calm and to make a gesture like she was grasping at something just before the man's eyes, her long black nails coming close to his face but not quite touching him, "You see them... don't you? The chains that bind mortals to their cursed fates. A prison created by ignorance and a cage of doubt that none can escape because they do not want to." Using the same hand Evailn pushed back her hood and tilted her head, her expression a mask of neutrality as she examined his eyes, "I see into your very soul... did you know that? I can see in your more than you see yourself. Tell me child... Do you wish to sever your ties to this Fate of yours?" She smiled then and stood to lean on her staff, "If so then I may offer you that chance, if you are strong enough. If you are willing to let go of the past and let it not anchor you to the path that Lhex has set out for you."

Wretched Aura: As a Wretched One Evalin possesses an unnatural aura about her that causes unease in those who get too close. It can come as a prickle of the hair on the back of the neck, a sense of 'wrongness' about her. How people experience it is different depending on their personality and how they handle the unnatural and unknown. Animals tend to become more agitated, more easily sensing how wrong Evalin is and often avoiding contact with her.

Hirem knew that he was achieving nothing by trying to speak to Lhex. His parents had taught him at an early age that no matter how hard he prayed, no matter how desperately he cried, the gods of Fate, Time, and Death would never answer him. Their affairs were simply above his comprehension, their perspective too broad to give him any kind of special importance. That was simply the way things were, and Hirem accepted the answer easily enough; as a child, he had never foresaw a need to petition Lhex directly for anything. And he had never borne a grudge against the god, even when his life fell apart with little chance of repair, thinking that it was Yahal alone that held any kind of sway over his life. If Hirem fell under hard times, or was cheated out of his happiness by some twist of destiny, then it was simply his own fault that it came to pass. No blame was due Yahal, for the god could only love him and wished him to rise above his ways, and no blame was given to Lhex, who had no reason to interfere in Hirem's life specifically. That was what the Benshira had always believed.

But right now, he hated Lhex.

He hated the old man because he was uncaring, because he had no desire to correct the severe imbalances of the world. Lhex was the presider of a system gone mad, that brought ruin to countless good souls and elevated the most ruinous minds to positions of extreme power. How could Lhex not take it into his hands to fix Mizahar? How could he have let the Valterrian come to pass, allowing the entire word to come to ruin? How could anyone, god or no, stand by and watch as thousands upon thousands of lives were extinguished in a fiery cataclysm and not try to save what remained? Gods be damned, even Rhysol would have been willing to do something! More than anything, he hated Lhex because of the silence. As Hirem stared up into the heavens, gripping his broken heart and holding it aloft for the gods to see, he hoped desperately that he would get an answer back. Any answer would have been good enough for Hirem... he just wanted an explanation for what had happened to his life. But there was nothing. No whispered words, no breath of a god's breath, no sign from the Ukalas. There was nothing. The Benshira was left alone with the ruin that was his past. Just a few miles north of this city, there is a child whose heart has been torn in two, wondering why his parents deserted him. Hirem bowed his head and closed his eyes, discontent with the silence.

But when the silence was broken, he found himself troubled even more.

"What a cruel being he is, the one known as Fate," came the unknown voice, making Hirem's eyes shoot open and search for the disturbance. From the shadows, she emerged - it took a few moments to realize that this apparition was the same woman that he had encountered five days prior. Wincing at the memory of her staff, the Benshira had to fight the urge to run away from this sudden, disturbing presence. "A most foul, and despicable being who cares not for the trials of men and takes pleasure in toying with the lives of all in this world," she continued, her every word an offence to his ears. What a heathen she is, to speak so of the gods! And yet... he could not help but agree. He could not help but agree, and the fact that he was agreeing terrified him. Frozen by this doubt, Hirem did not move as the figure knelt down to his level, as the figure waved long black claws at him, as the figure fixed her red eyes upon his. He stared back, his gaze hard and cold, hateful and curious all at the same time. His every instinct was screaming at him to run, to defy her, for this was a creature clearly opposed to everything he believed in, but Hirem could not find the strength or the will to resist. He simply stayed put, and listened to her.

"You see them... don't you? The chains that bind mortals to their cursed fates." Clearly unsure, the Benshira eventually gave a slow nod. Yes, he knew of those chains. The Chavi, the silver cords that tie us to the Ukalas. A record of our existence and bound to perish when we die in the mortal world. Kavala spoke of them only as something precious, something beautiful to be cherished and defended... is it possible that they are far more sinister than she claims? Or was what this woman spoke of different entirely from the Chavena? It was impossible to tell, for Hirem knew that they were many mysteries of the world he had yet to understand. "I see into your very soul... did you know that? I can see in your more than you see yourself." Once again, claims to a greater destiny, a greater purpose, that Hirem could not understand, coming from a mysterious woman with great power. His thoughts tended towards Kavala, and he wondered if this was not of the Konti's enemies standing before him now. Everything word from her mouth reminds me of the Ruv'na... but why is it so tempting to believe in her? And finally, there came the offer.

"Do you wish to sever your ties to this Fate of yours?"

Hirem's response was instinctive. Seething, he pushed himself off his knees and resumed his full height, towering over the witch woman. "I am a servant of the gods," he growled, fists clenched until the knuckles were bone white. "I have served them in past lives, I will serve them in this life. I have - you can't," At a loss for words, Hirem had to resist the urge to strike out at this woman. For surely she possesses powers that I cannot understand. But he knew, deep down, that fear of retaliation was not what stayed his hand.

He wanted what she was offering.

Wanted it more than he could possibly comprehend.

Tearing his gaze away from the dark figure, Hirem looked into the street, at the building corner, up at the sky - anywhere that wasn't the witch's red eyes. He knew what was happening - this was a popular motif that appeared in countless Benshira stories. The tragically misguided hero, tempted by offers of power from the beguiling sorceress. He knew how this was supposed to end: Yahal's faith would come shining through and he'd smite the sorceress with the power of his unwavering belief. But, somehow, Hirem knew that Yahal would be nowhere in sight. There would no help from the gods. There was only Hirem, and the witch, and the pain that dwelled inside his heart. The terrible, overwhelming pain, that he would never overcome for as long as he lived. No matter how far he travelled, no matter what measures he took, his soul was tormented. Nightmares would haunt him from now until the day he died. The memories of the past were etched into his skin, as strong as the chains that bound Hirem to his fate.

He wanted those chains to snap.

"How?" The Benshira finally asked, turning back to the woman and staring hard into her red eyes. "How can you do this, when even the gods claim no such power? I am..." Pausing, the words stuck in his throat, Hirem took a deep breath. "I am more than willing to let go of the path I have tread, but I cannot find the way. It is too deeply rooted to me.. to who I am. What you suggest is impossible."

Secretly, he hoped that this woman possessed the key to achieve the impossible.

Evalin sighed and closed her eyes, shaking her head slowly as if what she heard was sorely disappointing, "Can you not see child? The chains bind you, wrap about and cloak you as you are tied down by your own acceptance of a lie told to you by others." Raising a finger Evalin looked up at the sky and then back down at Hirem, "There are, beyond that sky, an infinite number of worlds, places and beings that you cannot see and it is impossible for you as you are now to view them. To experience them, to believe in them. But they exist, and it is possible to reach them despite what you may known now."

Evalin reached up and touched the icy gem that hung around her neck, pausing as if in thought before continuing, "You see this is the greatest cruelty that Fate has bestowed upon this world, the idea of 'impossibility'. It is a creation by a being who wants to establish firm control over that which he rules over, and what better way than to convince all, even the other gods, the impossibility of defying ones fate as set out by he who sits upon a throne made of the misery of mortal kind."

Casting her gaze upward Evalin closed her eyes once more as she gripped her staff with both hands, "You cling so desperately to the Idea of divinity, that simply because they CHOOSE to do nothing that it is impossible for anyone. That, dear child, is another lie you must abandon. The Gods care not to interfere with the workings of Fate, for what he does may be bent to their own devises. What better way to gather close followers, loyal men and women who are scorned by their Fate...?" Evalin smiled as she opened her eyes to look at Hirem, "Is that not how many come to know their religion? Some great tradgedy or misfortune that could not be avoided, setting them upon the course of their own religious zealotry? Are not the saints made so by their Fate? Are not demons a creation of Fate?"

At this point Evalin's expression darkened into a scowl as she spit to the side, leaning down to glare at Hirem, the passion invading her voice now, "To that I say be damned all that would follow like blind sheep the shepherd that lead them to drown in the river. Be damned the mindless fools who so easily accept that which is and say it cannot be changed. THAT is the folly of man, of mortals, to think that they are powerless when in fact in each and every person there lies the power to defy that which Fate has sown for you."

"You ask how I can do this?" Evalin straightened to look down her nose at Hirem, "I can do this because I have chosen to throw off the shackles placed on me by others. I create my own path, my own destiny, not this supposed God of Fate. Now choose oh pathetic wretch, will you continue as you have in your misery to follow the blind man's path to destruction, or will you remove that blindfold and follow a new path of your own creation...?"

What the witch was telling him was too much for Hirem to comprehend.

It was growing clearer to him exactly what sort of creature he now spoke with; this woman was possessed with a truly dark spirit, divorced from faith and hope, entirely set against the machinations of Fate. She placed no trust in the Gods and especially not Lhex, because she believed there was no point – they were not just apathetic, but they were actively filled with malice. In her eyes, the gods were not guardians of the mortal races but tyrants. What could have driven her to adopt this perspective? What kind of horrors has she experienced? Was she even human? The more Hirem heard, the more he began to doubt that this woman experienced life as he knew it. That pervasive feeling of wrongness that accompanied the creature’s every step was now magnified in his mind. He was talking with something truly unnatural.

”You see this is the greatest cruelty that Fate has bestowed upon this world, the idea of ‘impossibility’.” The Benshira shivered at her words, trying to envision what she suggested at. His eyes bored into her red orbs, and in the crimson glow, he beheld the surfaces of alien realms. Infinite words beyond our understanding, held back by our belief in the impossible… that what the gods have said cannot be, cannot be. That it shouldn’t be. She speaks with conviction but what if she is wrong? What if the gods have created the idea of ‘the impossible’ to protect us? For if there is no such thing as the impossible… chaos would prevail. Every part of him was resistant to her finely-crafted rhetoric, save for one – the most crucial part of all, his heart. He ached with pain as he contemplated the many secrets of the world he would never get to learn, the many deeds he would never get to perform, the many visions he’d never behold because the gods deemed it impossible. He didn’t want to live forever in fear because the gods willed it so.

Now he understood what the witch was saying. Now he understood her little lesson: She did not possess the key to the impossible.

He did. It had been within his power the whole time.

He had the impossible at his fingertips, and it was only doubt that held him back.
Looking down at his hands, Hirem wondered what he might have achieved with them in another life. These are good, strong hands, made for building. And crushing. I might have forged a name for myself with these hands. I might have defended my people. I could have united the Benshira, destroyed the enemies of Yahal, saved my world from destruction… but instead they have been wasted. Shaking, his fingers trembling still from his nightmares, the Benshira took a deep breath. ”Is that not how many come to know their religion?” The witch continued, uncaring for his inner conflict. ”Some great misfortune that could not be avoided, setting them upon the course of their own religious zealotry?” Blinking, scarcely able to believe what she had just uttered, Hirem stared at her in shock. Can it be true? He thought, heart sinking as he thought of his own devotion to Yahal.

His first instinct was to deny the accusation, to shake the witch by the shoulders and proclaim his unrelenting love of his lord and master, but he forced himself to look past the gut reaction. Closing his eyes, Hirem thought back to when he had first heard the summons of Yahal… he thought back to that fateful night in Yahebah, when he had received the vision in his sleep. What had caused that? He wondered, gritting his teeth as he sorted through his chaotic thoughts. Why had I imagined that I heard Yahal’s calling? If this witch was right, then there must have been some great misfortune that caused the event. There must have been a cause that brought Hirem to devote himself to Yahal. What could it have been? And as the Benshira thought on the matter in greater detail, he finally stumbled upon an answer.

Stella.

Stella Mered was the reason everything had fallen apart.

Life in Yahebah had become hell, he realized, struggling to breathe from the force of the epiphany. For two years, I was looked upon with disgust by my friends and family… excluded from the Masha, pushed away from their company, shunned at family meals… because I had lain with a whore. They kept my secret to save me from the Masha’s justice, but in doing so, they resented me. Hirem placed a hand to his chest, feeling his heart exploding beneath his breast. It can’t be, he kept telling himself, but to no avail. With a dawning sense of horror, Hirem realized that his life’s mistakes – the entire cycle of horror that had started nine years ago – began with his humiliation in loving Stella Mered. I pushed her away because I was scared of being found out, and I hated myself for it. I couldn’t look my family and friends in the eye without thinking myself a whoremonger. To make up for that mistake… to save my reputation… to become accepted once more by my brothers and sisters…

He had invented a story of divine purpose. He made the whole thing up and came to believe in it, because the alternative – accepting the fact that he was not a good Benshira – was too difficult to consider.

Everything he had striven for, everything he had come to regret, everything that had ruined him, had stemmed from that single lie. Fate, in all its terrible blindness, had destroyed him for a single lie.

All this time, he had been a single lie away from happiness.

"Twelve years ago," Hirem began, seething, "I fell in love with the wrong woman. I was young and stupid, and thought that being a proper Benshira was more important than being a good man. I pushed her away, not knowing she carried my child. And ever since that day, I have suffered. I have suffered and bled and killed and worse. I have ruined everything I have ever cherished. And now I have come here, to rebuild my life, and the gods decide to send my son to me. My son, Tim, who has lost his mother and was sold into slavery. He wanted a father to protect him, and I... I would have loved him. I would have cherished him, if I only knew he existed! But the gods were not so kind! Fate was not so just! I was finally allowed to meet him when I am least ready to become a father!"

Hirem clenched his jaw. "If I can give anything to my son, I will give him a life free from what I have suffered. I will spare him from Lhex's leash. I will make this world a better place for him, because I can. Enough waiting for Fate to bring me my just reward... I will take it for myself." Hirem stared deep into the witch's eyes, stared deep into the evil he had feared all his life...

And sold his soul to it. "I am ready to learn how to defy my fate. Will you teach me?"

Evalin smiled and extended one hand down to Hirem to take, "Indeed child. Follow me, and I will give you all that you require." When he took her hand Evalin would tighten her grip so that her nails dug into his skin, but not so much that it drew blood. Leaning down she would whisper in a low tone, "From this day you are mine. Your body, your soul. In exchange I will give you the power you desire, the opportunities you request, and fulfill your wish of freedom... and you will aid me to give this freedom to the rest of the world. Now come."

Releasing him Evalin would make her way to the Alements front door, pausing to open it for Hirem as she ushered him through. Without hesitation she would make her way to the back door of the establishment, crooking a finger for Hirem to follow into the back room where the medical room was located. This room was filled with shelves and beds, some with patients, others with curtains drawn around them so it could not be seen if there was anyone there or not. Once through the doorway Evalin would remove her cloak and scarves, hanging them on a hook near the entrance and moving to wash her hands in a basin of water.

"Tell me child, what is it you wish to change? What fate are you trying to circumvent? What is your DEEPEST desire." Evalin wore now simply a back cotton dress, clean and well pressed. Drying her hands Evalin would begin to collect bandages and other medical supplies from a cabinet near the sink, moving to carry them to a table where a patient was resting. This one was someone Caelum had recently aided, a wound in the thigh. The bandages were already being bleed through and so with a few swift movements the Immortal began to unwrap the old in preparation to re wrap with new, fresh ones.

As she worked Evalin would not look up, but continue in a softer tone, "You mentioned a son. Do you know where he is now?" The patient was asleep, most likely due to a powerful sleep inducer given to him by Caelum not too long ago.

"Follow me, and I will give you all that you require."

Hirem took a deep breath, staring at the woman's pale hand. She had stretched it out to him, a clear offer... take the hand, or don't. The muscles in his fingers twitched. The hair on his arms were standing. His eyes absently traced the black veins just underneath her skin.

"Follow me, and I will give you all that you require."

The words echoed in his head. He knew that the witch was waiting for his answer, but he could not give her one so readily. His declaration full of valour, his rage towards Fate, his determination, all was balanced in that moment by a single thought: This is wrong. It was no simple thing to agree to follow this woman, for the journeys her undertook were dark and far removed from anything he understood. He had experienced his own darkness in his long history, had felt it deep within his bones and knew the fire it could light in his heart. But that was the raw darkness of the monster within himself, the fury that could cloud his mind and transform him into an animal lusting for blood. He could ignore that darkness. He could fight that darkness. But what this woman was proposing, what she symbolized, was a path filled with far more malice, that could not be ignored no matter what. It took a conscious decision to step onto that path, and to continue down it despite the consequences. If Hirem took her up on this offer, he would never able to pretend that he was innocent of the crime. He would never be able to blame this on another. He would never able to forget that he alone had put himself on this path. He would be changed forever.

And, staring at this woman's outstretched hand, he could not tell if he was ready for that change. He knew that he was ready to remake the heavens, if he could - he would not spend one more day pining for Yahal to fix his problems for him, or wait for Lhex to reverse the direction of his ruinous Fate. He was done feeling helpless. If there was any chance that following this witch into the darkness would give Hirem a new lease on his destiny, give him one more chance to fix both his and Tim's life, then he would seize that chance eagerly. But in doing so, he might end up so greatly changed that neither Tim nor Stella would be able to recognize him. What if I set on this path and end up forsaking everything I've believed in? What if I lose my faith in purity? In goodness? What if I lose everything that made me, me? What if I lose sight of how important Tim's struggle is? He had sworn an oath to Kavala when she showed him the way out of his crushing despair, had sworn to uphold the power of the gods and see the Ruv'na brought to justice... would accepting the witch's offer forsake that vow?

No, Hirem realized, eyes flaring open. I won't be changing if I don't want to. I won't become a different man if I don't want to. This is my future. This is my fate. I decide who I will become, and I decide how I will fulfill my vows. No one will be able to tell me to do anything else. He would be in control, because this witch was going to teach him how he could seize control.

That was all that mattered. The Benshira took the woman's hand and rose to his feet.

The witch was quick to impress upon him the gravity of this acceptance. "From this day you are mine. Your body, your soul. In exchange I will give you the power you desire, the opportunities you request, and fulfill your wish of freedom... and you will aid me to give this freedom to the rest of the world." Refusing to show the pain he felt as her claws grazed his flesh, Hirem gave a slow nod. "That is all I can ask, and you have given me a fair bargain. I accept. If you would grant others the same gift that you have now given me, then I will happily see your words spread and cause championed. But remember," and here his tone turned authoritative, sounding somewhat brave despite the immensely powerful individual that was battering with. "I have given you my body and soul out of my free will. If you would seek to change our terms, impose your will on me and take away my freedom, then you will have become my enemy. Not only that, but you will have transformed yourself into a traitor, and I will be forced to destroy you."

Immediately, he thought of Tim, and wondered if he would be able to see that promise through. If trying to fight her ends up with Tim losing his father, would the act of resistance be worth it? He wasn't sure, and hoped it would never come to that point.

Following the witch back into the Alements tavern, Hirem was not surprised to find a medical area waiting in the back of the establishment. He, after all, had spent a good deal of time here, getting treatment from Caelum for his nightmare symptoms. He wondered what the witch was doing here - why would Caelum have dealings with a woman like this? - but did not raise any questions as she prepared to treat an unconscious stranger. "Tell me child," she began, drawing his attention back to her gaunt face, "what is it you wish to change? What fate are you trying to circumvent? What is your DEEPEST desire." Thinking only briefly on the subject, Hirem gave a quiet shrug. "I am no longer going to allow the whims of others to control my destiny. From this point on, no matter they be a god or mortal, I will be the one directing my fate. And what I want is... is have a place in this world. I have lived for far too long on the fringes, staring into the lives of others and wondering when it'll be my turn to have a purpose. I want to create my own purpose, I will give back to this world, I will make it a better place for those that cannot defend themselves. And I'll give Tim the life that he deserves. I'll give him safety, happiness, guidance... I'll give him a home." Sighing, he stared off at the far wall, trying to imagine what that home might be like.

At the witch's question about his son, Hirem gave another shrug. "I do. I've been able to keep track of him all season, in fact. He came to me early in the winter when I was working at the Rat Hole, an urchin looking for his next meal in the pockets of tavern-goers. Seeing him, I ended up offering him a place at my friend's, a very kind woman named Kavala. He lives with here now a few miles north of the city, at a place called Sanctuary. It is a good home, but I fear his age will get him into trouble there. Too much anger in the blood." He rubbed his brow, slowly nodding. "He - he doesn't know who I am yet. I only found out a few days ago. He'll have to be told, at one point... the sooner the better. But I fear what may happen. He may not believe me; we look nothing alike, and there's a good chance that I am mistaken. But I know what the truth is. I know he is mine." Glancing back over to the witch, he cleared his throat. "My name is Hirem, from the tents of Alachi, of the sons of Rapa. Who are you? And... what are you? I've never met a soul like yours before."

Evalin did not look up from her work as she answered, "Tim... Short for Timothy is it not?" Tossing the old bandages into a bin by the bed Evalin began to wrap the new, white, bandages in their place, using quick fluid motions and tugging from time to time to ensure it was nice and tight.

"You, like many before you, ask a question that cannot be easily answered. I have been many things in the centuries I have lived, each city I pass gifting me a new name and title to match whatever dark fantasy they may have concocted for me to bear." Using her teeth Evalin severed the bandages and began to tuck it back in on itself, keeping it in place while she stood and moved to store away the excess cloth and to dispose of the dirtied articles, "The witchling child, she who walks in darkness, the temptress, the fall of the house Telleran... Rarely are my names known and renown for being good and inspiring, rather I am always that which puts fear and hatred into the hearts of men. Such is my existence, and such is my curse. For you, however," Evalin stopped and turned to look fully at Hirem, blood red eyes searching his own, "You may call me Evalin. Simply Evalin, for as of yet I have earned no such titles in this place."

Once her hands were free Evalin moved to Caelum's desk and took up a quill and bit of parchment, dabbing the end of the quill in the ink well before scribbling an address and a date. Once done she handed the piece to Hirem, moving past him to continue on with her work, "Come to this place at this date, and then I will reveal to you who I am and what we are to do. You will meet others who, like you, follow me to make a change to this unbearably cruel world. There you will find allies, and perhaps friends."

Waving a hand Evalin looked back as she sat down in front of another patient, preparing to change his bandages as well, "Hirem, I look forward to the times to come. Worry you not, for whatever you desire it is well within your grasp once you learn your own strength."
