[Tall Johnny's]A Bones and a Weave

1 Winter 514

Bones hadn’t been in Sunberth long, and already he was looking for work.

But then that was who Bones was. He did not want to lose focus amongst the humans, and certainly did not want to let his guard down amongst them. Nor did he want to find himself miza-less and without a home. If he did not work, he would not have a place to stay, nor food to eat. And eating was one of the few vices that the humans held in common with a Dhani. Perhaps not in the same way, but still a thing all the same.

Bones diet in his human form was not too odd, though he did prefer to eat mainly meat. Part of this was because his body demanded a high protein diet, to keep his lean muscles in shape. Part of this was the fact that the things humans passed off as food was little more than feed for prey, plants and such. The law of the wild was survival of the fittest, eat or be eaten. Meat to fuel the body. Though if he had to he could eat the vegetation humans called food, but he did not like it.

He did however prefer his meat natural, not heated till its juicy essence was ruined, or cooked as the humans called it. Nor suffused in other plants and things, or seasoned as the humans named the action. Both seemed odd to Bones, as he preferred much simpler fare, but he had learned to put up with much during his time amongst humans, even the ruining of food. That however did not mean he liked it…

Before this he had been in another human city, Nyka. There he had taken on a job as a combat instructor, teaching others to fight with blade and fist. Bones own expertise lay in the more precise fighting style of unarmed combat, and with the gladius, a particularly deadly short blade.

He wore two crossed on his back, held on a simple leather strap that went over one shoulder and about his torso. Easier to drop it should he need to change form. One blade was much older, a gladius with a bone hilt that had previously belonged to his father. The other was much newer, crafted by the skilled isur of Alvadas, and the finest weapon Bones had ever held.

Perhaps it was his blades that attracted attention from a young boy as he walked down a street, looking for a job and a place to stay.

For some reason the boy altered his path of walking, taking himself closer to Bones in his movement. Bones watched him near surreptitiously, not letting on that he had noticed the other person coming at him, a skill more at home for a hunter, but useful apparently in this setting.
Bones is a Constrictor Dhani. He likes to eat meat. He also has some speech problems.

[Tall Johnny's]A Bones and a Weave

When the boy neared and collided with Bones he was not surprised, appearing to most observers as an accident, if there had been anyone else about watching or who cared. But Bones had seen and observed, and the boy was not all that subtle.

And so when a hand went for one of the swords on his back, a smooth motion that seemed a flail, Bones own hand raced upward, catching the hand at the wrist just as it settled victoriously on the hilt of the blade.

Bones twisted his grip on the wrist, forcing the youths hand to pop open. Sensing he was caught, he immediately tried to pull himself free and dart away in the opposite direction.

Bones however had a firm grip on his hand, and leverage over him. Using a simple wrestling technique, a take down, Bones swept his feet out from under him in a combination turn and leg sweep, while also yanking forward with the wrist. As the youth attempted to fight off the arm pull by instinct, the leg sweep caught him, and he fell.

Bones went with him, keeping his grip on his wrist as he brought him to the ground. As soon as he was down Bones mounted him as one might a wall, using his own weight to pin his legs, and a hand at each wrist. With that it was over, the simple street urchin taken down. Though as Bones got a second look, he appeared to not be as young as Bones had first thought, at least by human ways.

“Ssat was not nice… Trying to take what is not yoursss… Perhapsss ssso long asss we are here, you could assssissst me in a few questionsss, and we could forget ssisss.”

The youth struggled for a moment, hoping to get away, but giving up, seeing that he was caught. He nodded, accepting Bones’ terms, though still darting his gaze about, looking for a chance to get away or to gain the upper hand.

“I am a fighting inssstructor looking for work. Perhapsss you would know a place I could go for sssuch a ssing?”

The boy paused for a moment, before finally looking back at Bones, hate and anger in his eyes.

"If it’s fightin you want, it’s Tall Johnny’s. They’se got fightin, and they might have uses for a fighter, or some un who can teach it."

“And where isss ssisss Tall Johnny’sss?”

Once the boy gave Bones the directions, he quietly let him up. As soon as he was free of Bones’ pin he darted away, giving him one last glare and a rude gesture as he entered an alley, and disappeared from sight.

Bones let out a sigh. It seemed the youth here were without direction, and petty criminals. Such a thing would not have been allowed where he was raised, in the nest Zinrah. But this was human land, and there ways differed to his.

With the new direction, Bones headed off for the place he had been told of, Tall Johnny’s. It took him a bell or two, but eventually he found it. It was a nice enough looking building, especially when compared to the other ones Bones had seen about Sunberth. A brick structure with a pair of strong double doors, and a pair of large blue skinned men standing guard at it.

“And where is this Tall Johnny’s?”

[Tall Johnny's]A Bones and a Weave

Getting inside of the place was easy enough. Though the men were clearly guards of some type, Bones was not sure if they were actually there to keep people out. Perhaps they were there to intimidate people into behaving inside, since their customers were likely the very people other businesses might call undesirable.

Bones himself had fought in an arena of sorts, and so knew a bit about such work. That however had been the Colosseum in Alvadas, a place now gone. But Bones had been a gladiator there for a time, taking on his share of foes. Though in that place the foes had been mostly animal and monster, not humans. But Bones had his fair share of time fighting those also.

Asking for the proprietor, Bones was given some vague directions by one of the guards, and told to head inside. Inside was a mash of flesh, moving and alive and active. It was ill lit, filled with smoke, there wasn’t quite enough room, and everyone seemed to be yelling.

On the one side of the building where various game and things Bones could not describe. That was where Bones had been told to look for the owner, Johnny. The guard had laughingly told him to find the only person that looked and smelled like they’d had a bath, and that’d be the owner. At the time Bones thought he might have been making fun, but as he got closer the phrase unwashed masses took on a clearer meaning.

As the guard had said, it was clear who the proprietor was. He seemed the only person nicely dressed, and well coifed. Something else that surprised Bones was who the man was talking to. It was the youth from before, who had tried to rob Bones. The same one that had given Bones directions here. That surely wasn’t a coincidence.

As Bones neared the youth gave him a quick glance, accepted a coin from Johnny, and darted off to melt into the crowd. One of two things seemed likely. Either he worked for Johnny, and was reporting to him, or he didn’t work for him and simply was giving him some useful info and foreknowledge about Bones in exchange for some quick money. Perhaps neither of these was the truth, and there truly was a greater conspiracy going on. Bones however doubted it was anything so complicated.

Likely it was just what it seemed, a grubby youth making some money where he could, and with one endeavor failing he had turned to another, information selling.

As Bones thought on this, it became more and more likely as the truth in Bones mind. Particularly as he thought on the directions he’d been given to arrive here. It had not by any means been the quickest route. Perhaps then there had been a bit of forethought, as he had perhaps given Bones a long route so he could get here first and sell his info.

As Bones neared the man, Tall Johnny, smiled back at him.

"Greetings, I am Tall Johnny, proprietor of this fine establishment. And you must be the one our skittish friend there was telling me about. So I hear you’re a fighter? The boy there said you handled him well enough. Perhaps you would like to earn some coin in the arena with a more formidable foe?"

Bones nodded, then shook his head.

“Not fight. Teach ossersss to fight.”

Johnny nodded, still smiling at Bones.

“Ah yes, the boy did say something about that, about you being an instructor. So you want to teach my fighters to fight better? Perhaps make the fights a bit more interesting with a bit more skill, instead of them just wailing on each other? ”

Bones nodded once more, taking in a slow breath and letting it out. Clearly the man enjoyed haggling, and dealing, but Bones just wanted to get things figured out.

“Fine. We’ll consider your little tussle before as your audition. If half of what the boy said is true, you’ll be able to teach my men quite well. Go get a room over in the sunset quarters, and I’ll see you back bright and early in the morning for your first instruction. I’ll have whoever’s still standing then there. You keep the men on their feet fighting a bit longer, and we’ll do fine.”

Bones nodded, and headed back outside, after an assistant gave him directions to the sunset quarters, Bones headed out the door.

As he was exiting, he noted a tensing in one of the guards, and shifted as the guard launched a punch at his head. With a paired motion, Bones brought a hand up to push up at the blue man’s wrist, while also ducking. His fist blew by just shy of Bones’ head, a near miss. If he hadn’t noticed his tensing in preparation for the blow, he likely would have not Bones out cleanly. Bones has reacted more by instinct and long trained reflexes, more so than any actual conscious thought or reaction.

But then once one had been doing unarmed combat as long as Bones had, much became instinct that was deeply ingrained, a necessity of survival.

From behind him Bones heard a short bit of laughter, and saw that Johnny was there, having followed him along.

Still grinning, he nodded at the guard, who returned to his post.

“You’ll do.” Johnny said, the grin still on his face.

Bones wasn’t quite sure what to say. Clearly it had been another test, a test for Bones to show what he could do. He was a bit aggravated at the deception, but he did not want to fight with his new boss, and so Bones simply left before anything else could happen.

He’d get an apartment in the sunset quarters, a place to stay and keep his gear, and then turn in for the night. It was late, and he’d need to be up early for his first lesson with the fighters.
