Kamilla Circe Gordon

28th of Fall 512AV

Today was just another day to be spent outside of town for the aspiring young mage as once again, she found herself headed toward her familiar little clearing to practice her reimancy like almost every other day this season. It was early, a bit later than usual for her to be headed out, but still early in the day. Zeltiva's residents had probably all gotten their days started when she'd finally been ready to leave, but she was close now and so, it did not matter.

Following the trail of small markers that she'd created earlier in the season, Kamilla strode off of the main dirt road that lead to and from the city, entering the wilderness as she made for her destination. With all the time she'd spent there, Kamilla was beginning to think of the small grassless clearing as her own, to the point that she felt safer within it, even though it was still surrounded by the wilderness that held many dangerous threats.

Kamilla felt somewhat more excited for today's experimentation than most other days because she'd come up with yet another new and creative idea that she was eager to attempt. She'd gotten the idea the day before, just after returning from the clearing as she strolled through the streets of Zeltiva. It had been late afternoon and the sun was nearing it's finally moments when an otherwise ordinary gust of wind had blown past her, picking up a clump of dust and fallen leaves as it began spinning about, forming a miniature vortex of wind and dust.

Now Kamilla couldn't control or create gusts of wind, at least not yet, but what she was quite capable of doing those things with dust and so the idea was born. The plan was simple enough and she doubted the basics would be hard to grasp, however she assumed that the difficult part would be finding a way to increase the intensity of the technique to a point where it would become useful to her, after all, catching a few grains of dust and willing them to dance about was hardly worthwhile.

Finally arriving at her destination, Kamilla's lips pulled into a small smile as she glanced over her clearing, a place that had allowed her more freedom to explore her love of magic than any other in her lifetime. Pulling in a deep breath of air and exhaling it was the only interlude she allowed before jumping straight into her research, or at least, into the process. Dropping her bag against it's usual tree at the edge of the clearing as she made her way into the center and froze. The first part of her process was of course, to clear her mind in preparation for the task at hand. Kamilla had found that calming herself before attempting reimancy made her djed more responsive and therefore easier to manipulate, like heating up metal to make it more malleable.

Closing her eyes to enter her meditative state, Kamilla began to inhale and exhale steadily, feeling the calm flowing through her. Clearing her mind was no easy task for the young mage, her mind was constantly rushing with thoughts and stopping them took quite a bit of focus, but eventually the storm within began to still until finally, gentle ripples were all that remained.

Once she felt that she was calm enough, Kamilla's eyes fluttered open, brown irises glowing in the late of the morning sun. Reaching within herself, she began to gently prod at the damn of djed, gently coaxing her magical energy into creeping towards the surface. It's movement was sluggish and lacking in urgency, but she didn't mind, she was in no rush and preferred not to force it to obey against it's will, she'd found it to be like swimming against a river. It was much easier to go with the flow, simply joining the stream and suggesting it's course once she was part of it. If you can't beat it, join it.

Her djed continued to get closer and closer to the surface until Kamilla could feel the energy swirling around within herself, calmly circling her body as it awaited instruction. She'd decided that a gaseous form would be best for the task at hand and so, taking a deep breath of air, Kamilla guided her res towards her lungs and exhaled it. The glistening cloud of lavender res flowed from her mouth, floating outward into a mist roughly the size of a watermelon. Then, with hands outstretched, Kamilla willed the res to disperse, spreading into a larger, albeit thinner, mist that began to circle her body, with just under a meter of space between them.

In order to keep the res circling her body neatly, Kamilla needed the help of a gesture, gently twirling her index finger round and round as she observed the res' rotation until it felt rehearsed enough for her to move onto the next stage. With her right hand controlling the path of the gaseous res with the twirling gesture, Kamilla's left hand would control the res' function as she clenched it into a fist, willing the res to attract the earth beneath it.

The effect of her res on the barren soil that covered the clearing was subtle at first, a few grains floating into the air and being pulled into the cycle of res, but soon enough more and more of the dirt joined to rotation until finally there was a thin dancing cloud of dirt surrounding the young mage. Unfortunately, the vortex of spinning dirt was far too close to her body and Kamilla found herself caught withing a storm of her own creation. Releasing her hold on the earth and res itself, Kamilla allowed the twisting dirt to scatter and return to the earth as she coughed out the clumps that she'd inhaled.

The coughing lasted several ticks and even when it was over, Kamiila could feel a few grains of dirt sticking to the inside of her throat as she rubbed at her sand covered eyes. The attempt had been an almost laughable failure and Kamilla imagined that if anyone else had been there to witness it, they may have been in stitches after seeing the young woman's contorted face as she was pelted and covered in dirt that had only been following her command. She herself let out a few short lived chuckles as she attempted to dust herself off.

It had barely been a bell since she'd washed herself and gotten dressed and already, Kamilla was absolutely filthy. Dust covered the young mage's body from head to toe and she could feel it gathered in her hair, coating her skin and even inside her boots. She was far from thrilled with this result, not only had she failed her attempt at creating a useful vortex but she was now covered in dirt, the complete opposite of her favourite state...clean.

Deciding to take a quick de-dusting break, Kamilla made her way towards her bag, patting and shaking as much of the wayward dirt from her clothes and skin as she did. She retrieved her filled waterskin from her bag and quickly gathered a mouthful with which to wash out her mouth before removing her boots and shaking out the gathered dirt. "Note to self: Keep more distance between yourself and the storm." she said out loud as she began to vigorously shake out her hair. "This would have been the perfect time for water reimancy."

Half a bell later, once Kamilla had freed herself of as much of the dirt that coated her body as possible and finally given in to the realisation that she would be unable to rid herself of anymore without the assistance of water and soap, she decided to return to her attempt, though significantly more uncomfortable than she had been during her first. Still itching and chafing in many places, Kamilla took a swig of cool water from her waterskin before returning to her spot in the center of the clearing.

Once there she repeated her process of gathering gaseous res in her lungs and exhaling it in the form of a glistening lavender mist. With that done, Kamilla dispersed the res once more and made sure to increase the space between herself and the magic substance. She had long since been aware of her limitations when it came reimancy, her djed was slow to respond, her res control was far from absolute, limited to mostly rough shapes and rehearsed paths and most of all, her control of it only existed within a few meters of her body. Yes, her limits were significant but she had still managed to accomplish plenty in spite of them and this new technique would be no different.

So, filled with the determination to succeed and an even more powerful determination to return to Zeltiva for a warm bath, Kamilla pushed her cloud of res outward until it neared the edges of her sphere of control before beginning it's rotation once more. The new distance was only about three meters from her body and only two meters more than her previous attempt, but it was the most she could muster at this point in her training and it would have to do.

As the res' path became more rehearsed and Kamilla felt she was comfortable with the larger circle of movement, which required a slower rotation of her finger to keep track of, she clenched her left hand into a fist once more and willed the earth toward her res. Much like before, the pull was weak at first but slowly gathered more and more of the dirt until Kamilla was surrounded by a swirling vortex of dust which teetered between impressive and satisfactory.

Everything seemed to be going well this time until Kamilla began noticing a flaw in her spell, now and then a cloud of dust would venture too far from the cycle only to be attracted by specs of res on the other end of it. This recurring event caused the dust to cross straight through the inner circle, where Kamilla stood, and lead to her being covered in dust once more, however, she did not cease her attempt this time, clenching her fist tighter and strengthening the pull her res had on the earth instead.

Almost instantly, the dirt that had been straying from it's course or following on it's outskirts was pulled back into line, like the tightening of a leash. The strengthened elemental pull forced the swirling cloud of dust into a tighter, thicker and neater rotating wall which left the inside of the circle almost untouched, almost. Surprised by the sudden success that she'd been granted, Kamilla allowed the res and dust to disperse once more, quickly spreading and falling back to the ground as it was released from her power. Small tingling sensations ran through her arms, not like the sting of sand beating against her skin as it was thrown by the wind.

It seemed the magical exertion of the feat she'd just performed had been far less than she'd expected, something she attributed to the use of a moderate amount of gaseous res which was far less taxing than a moderate amount of liquid res, since the volume produced was far less substantial. Even still, Kamilla took the electric sensation in her arms as a sign to turn in for the day and returned to her bag, "Time for a warm bath!" she said eagerly, slinging it over her shoulder before making her way out of the clearing and towards the main road.

Kamiila couldn't wipe the satisfied smile from her face as she made her way back into town. She'd set out to accomplish something today and had done just that, all that was left was to wash the coat of failure from her skin and record her discovery in her grimoire. As she strolled back towards Zeltiva, a name that perfectly described the new technique jumped out at her from within the depths of her mind, one that she spoke aloud for only her ears to hear..."Dust-Devil."
