Hunting Pt. 2
44th of Summer, 514 A.V.

Tinnok had not been prepared for her first hunting trip to transform into the need of three mouths to feed, but as soon as Tsuya had laid eyes on the baby Wanolo baboon (they had determined 'it' to be a 'him') there was no separating the two of them, well once she had managed to rip him from his mother's corpse. All it took was a bit of mashed up fruit for the two to become the best of friends, and barely a day had passed and it seemed he was content with Tsuya's strange green hair as a replacement for his mother's coat. Though it was a bit sad, Tinnok was at least grateful that the infant was young enough that the state of loss was but a temporary one.

Determined to get bigger game to bring to the nest Tinnok set off on a hunt again, but this time, curbed her pride and stopped at Sissicillys in order to recruit a Dhani companion to aid her. Even if she were to take down something as large as a Nandhai, she would have no way of carrying it back to the nest on her own. With the help of a massive constrictor, however...

Both sisters that ran 'the heart' were there, and regarded Tinnok coolly, but without any disrespect, a young hunter, apparently barely past the mastery of his human form was sent with her. In Dhani form he was a strange golden brown with green and brown speckles that seemed the perfect camoflauge once he, Tinnok, Tsuya, and the small wanolo emerged into the jungle.

Though the three shared pleasantries, the half breed learning the male's name, or at least the main part of it was Slinys, the trip fell into a strange determined silence, both parties eager to prove themselves, and Tsuya able to sense the tension and unwilling to break it, at least immediately. Though the young girl could prove a liability on their mission, Tinnok wanted her to learn the basics of hunting, she was unsure of how long she would be the girl's mentor and wanted to make sure at least some part of her survival knowledge was imparted upon the girl.

They struck out directly away from the majority of the blockade and Zinrah, Tinnok picking up several pairs of old agouti tracks, but leaving them, realizing that an agouti was no prize to a Dhani. She had to think big this trip, especially if she actually wanted to help the nest.

"It iss possible we may have to travel a few dayss to find worthy prey." Slinys had a much better grasp of common than Tinnok did, for which she was grateful. Two beings barely able to communicate with each other could amount to a serious issue on a hunting mission. As it was she nodded.

"If need, is not bad thing." Slinys gave her a strange look, and Tsuya grinned. "We can stay out in the jungle for as long as we need to!" Tinnok waved her hand at the child in agreement, then focused her attention back to the wilderness, glancing up after a moment. "Is there a prey you look for?" She frowned, trying to think of a better way in her limited understanding of Common to phrase it. "Nandhai? Akila? Tskanna?"

The Dhani snorted derisively "You would be no help in carrying a Tssskanna back to the sssity. A Nandhai would be good, but that iss difficult prey to come by. Anything bigger than a Threshal isss fair game."

Tinnok gave a grunt of understanding, and then they made off. Both hunters searched for tracks, but it was cursory searching at best. A pause every now and again to check at a broken piece of foliage, an old pile of feces, or perhaps marks on a tree, all of these things they found little of. This day was mostly for making ground through the wilderness, not searching for larger game that knew better than to tread around the ruins above Zinrah.

As Tinnok walked she would pause occasionally, remove a dagger and cut a large strip of bark off of a tree trunk. Though she liked to think herself more familiar with the jungle than many, the direction they were headed in was unfamiliar territory. A path for the future, or even to help her gain her bearings (even if Slinys did not require it) on the return home would provide invaluable for her memory of it later on.

At midday they took a small break, finding a mango tree. Slinys slithered off to find himself a snack, while Tinnok and Tsuya gorged themselves on fruit, the girl, though not shy, opening up a bit more now that the constrictor was gone.

"Tin, why can't we just eat fruit, not meat?"

The half breed sliced the skin off the mango smoothly with her dagger, plopping a juicy slice into her mouth and chewing thoughtfully for a moment before replying. "I not know." Tsuya gave her a puzzled expression, quite used to the older Witch having an answer to almost any question her roving mind could think up, and Tinnok shrugged. "May be you not need eat meat ever, but..." She opened her mouth wide, leaning in close to Tsuya and ran her fingers over her canines. "I not have these only to eat fruits." She leaned back with a smile, stowing a couple more mangoes in her pack for later snacking if they didn't find more food on the way. Several chimes later Slinys rejoined them, and the three continued to traverse the jungle in the opposite direction of Zinrah, making good headway in the daylight hours.

Hunting Pt 2

One day had passed since the hunters had left the city. Tinnok had killed two Agouti, but only for the sake of an evening's meal, Slinys hunting on his own, and digesting it away from the fire, since she only saw the bulge in his stomach when he returned to camp.

Now their searching for tracks became more serious. Since early morning they had been ascending a steady continual incline. Their progress was slowed by this, but also by Slinys and Tinnok's searching. They fanned out, keeping Tsuya as a sort of marker in the middle, and there pace slowed to try to find signs of life that could point to bigger prey. Tinnok thought she found promising claw marks, but Slinys assured her they were too old, he found some paw prints, but they too were outdated.

It wasn't until Syna started dipping in the sky that day than did their Dhani companion give a hiss of triumph. Tinnok dashed over, legs aching from the exercise this mountain had given her. There she was shown a wide swathe of forest somewhat dug out and filled with mud and puddles of rainwater. Hoofprints, tusk marks, and signs of boar activity were everywhere, and the tracks that led from the mud pit were still wet even around the very edges. Tinnok looked up with glee at Slinys, and drew her bow.

Unfortunately, though close to the boars, or at least they hoped, it grew dark before they were able to catch up. Though Slinys could see in the darkness with his heat vision, the Constrictor agreed that one night, as long as they set out early in the morning, would not harm their chances too much of finding the boars. Tinnok reasoned that even if they had found them, they still would have needed this extra night before heading back to Zinrah, and thus the companions set up a quick camp, and went to be, the half breed eager to prove her worth to the Dhani in the morning.

Hunting Pt 2

It was still dark when Tinnok woke, bleary eyed. She was tired, but she forced herself up into a sitting position, happy to see she was awake before her Dhani companion. She sighed, collecting herself and taking a long drought of water before doing stretches. Her body was slowly becoming more limber, and she wished only to build upon this fact. She stretched, legs and rear flat against the ground, her fingers reaching past her toes to touch the ground just beyond them, leaning forward until her body quivered with exertion, then holding herself there for three ticks before releasing with a heavy sigh.

Leaning back she stretched her arms, twisted her waist at hard angles against her hips, and stretched one leg over another before standing, and waking first Slinys, then Tsuya.

The morning was quiet, tired entities slowly following the trail of peccaries through the jungle. The tracks would disappear, and all three of them would have to move in slowly expanding circles to find them again, but this generally did not take long, the swine were moving in a group, Tinnok estimated 4-6, Slinys simply shrugged at this estimation. Regardless there were numbers, enough to create clear disturbances in the foliage and plenty of tracks to follow.

Once Syna had risen fully, the three made good time, crossing ground swiftly, Tinnok was quite proud to see Tsuya was keeping up extremely well, adapting to the landscape and easily traversing root and foliage. She wasn't quiet...but she wasn't unnecessarily loud either. The half breed would give her an encouraging smile and tried to emphasize her movements, avoiding dry leaves fallen from the canopy and treading on roots wherever she could.

It was midday, no breaks save to pass the water skin to speak of when Slinys froze in place, tip of his tail twitching in anticipation, and Tinnok signaled to Tsuya to stop immediately. Her dark green eyes found Tinnok's and she gave a nod. The girl had no weapons, but Tinnok wanted her to know everything about the hunt, regardless, and that meant knowing when not to move, even if she couldn't aid her and the Dhani in the kill.

Just a short distance away she heard the snuffling of their prey and smiled broadly, her bow sliding over her shoulder, drawing four arrows into her hand and creeping forward with Slinys. They approached cautiously, and the half breed marveled at how silent the Dhani could make the undulating movements of his tail, which seemed to crush and absorb sound, moving smoothly over everything it touched.

Behind a small glimmer of ferns the two prepared. Tinnok readied her bow, notching one arrow smoothly and drawing her string back fully. Slinys observed her preparation and slid off to the side. His expertise would be in close combat, and so the half breed waited until he had positioned himself to the side of their prey, four swine foraging, snorting, and snuffling around a small clearing. Their slitted eyes met for an instant, and then Tinnok loosed her arrow. It struck the haunch of one of the peccaries, causing an ear piercing squeal that sent all into a frenzy. Scrambling hooves got purchase on the ground and started fleeing, but Slinys was already racing faster than his bulk would suggest to block off the pigs. Tinnok took another arrow from her hand and drew and notched it, kneeling to give herself a bit more steadiness and watching the panicking pigs trying to figure out which was to flee with the massive serpent hissing and clawing at them. He had one of them pinned, so Tinnok aimed for the peccary she had already shot, downing it with another arrow directly into its neck.

Then she shouldered her bow and raced across the ground, dropping her arrows and drawing her dagger. She lunged across the clearing narrowly missing a peccary who became aware of her presence. Two peccary were down, two remaining, with Slinys closing in on one. Tinnok raced rather clumsily after the last one who had found its potential exit and began racing between the gap in Slinys's tail and the rest of the jungle.

Then, however, a whooping cry went up and Tsuya barred its path. Tinnok could have cried out with joy as she bounded forward, sailing again, and tackling the medium sized pig to the ground. Instantly she was covered with mud, hooves kicking, the squealing nauseatingly loud, but the momentum of her jump won out, and her dagger sank into the neck of the creature. Since it was thick, to be sure the half breed drew it out and stabbed again twice, and by the time it stopped kicking Slinys had killed and bound both of his kills, along with the third Tinnok had downed with arrows, and had them slung over his shoulders.

The half breed carried the fourth, and the three began to trek back to the city. Though smaller, the pigs would still make for food for hungry bellies in the city, that was for sure.
