Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

53rd of Spring, 515AV
Outside of Riverfall

He sighed, falling backwards into the softness of the spring grass, collapsing into a bed of varying greens, a canopy of loose strands sliciing the clear blue sky into green strips. Everything was cool, and new and fresh. The giant walls of Riverall cast their shadow over him, creating a weirdly false sense of protection -- he was close enough he knew he could call for help, but maybe too far to survive long enough for help to come.

The coyote was hunting. Or he had been. That was before.

Now, Brother was in a puppy mood, and they were only playing at hunting. The coyote had gotten this game from some children in the blue city that stood behind them: a pup --or more, if there were more-- would be prey and the last pup would seek. Currently, Brother was prey, the coyote the seeker.

The big dog's trail was not difficult to follow in the grass, as the tall stalks were like trail markers of scent, showing the way. But that didn't last. The coyote came across a rolled-in area of mud and small fragrant bushes, that Brother must have tossed in to hide his smell. After that, it was much more difficult to track him, and the coyote had to really put his nose close to the ground and snuffle, and look with his eyes.

It was just as the scent was growing stronger and the coyote thought he might find his brother soon for pouncing, that the howl went up. It was a short yipping thing like a coyote might make, which he had taught the dogs when they were young. But it came now in Sister's grown-dog voice, a high, interesting sound that caught the attention. The coyote paused where he was, ears flicking in that direction. This was not a sound of distress, but more one of alert. Sister, actually hunting while the others played, had found something. The coyote abandoned his and Brother's game, and headed towards the site of the noise. He hadn't gone far before there was a rustling of grasses nearby and Brother bounded out, tail wagging. He was still in a play mood, despite Sister's warning: he nipped at the coyote's ears and tail and paws as they walked together, staying close enough to brush their sides.

The two canines found Sister quickly, hunched down in a guarded, stalking position. Her head was held low, and she sniffed in the forward direction, tail still and trembling, ears back. The coyote, curious, pawed forward to see what she was pointing at.

Just beyond them he caught the scent, and his tail started wagging as Sister began a low growl. A human-form. Out here, out of the city. Nearby. He sniffed a little harder, and panted out his happiness. Not just a human-form but a real human. There was the sound of a voice, the human was speaking, and the coyote took this as an invitation. Before Sister could do something to stop him, maybe bite him again, he leapt out of the tall grass towards the source of the scent and sound.

The rush of fur and paws landed a few feet away from a prone figure, and the coyote stopped there, knowing that sometimes the human-forms didn't like him to be too close too fast, though he wished to be close to every one of them. But he didn't do as he wanted, instead dancing on his feet in his excitement at meeting a new person, and looking at the young-looking man with intent brownish eyes. His ears perked forward and his mouth stretched into a panting grin. Behind him, Brother poked his head from the grass, keeping a further distance but also smiling. The coyote could hear his brother's tail whipping against the grass.

He'd caught the sharp chirp, the first sound that had broken his peace; he'd imagained it a bird, maybe, a loud one at that, but nothing serious. He was stupid, he had checked with the guards prior. They hadn't recommended his little stroll outside the walls, but they'd at least assured him that nothing seriously dangerous would come this close to the city.

And after all, Thomas had thought, he'd spent times out in the Testing Grounds. Nothing out here could hold a candle to one of Sahova's failed experiments.

It didn't mean, he forgot, that whatever was out in the grass could still kill him, giant mutated racoon or not. Something he immediately remembered when a low growl sounded, a deep noise, threatening.

An embarassingly loud scream-gasp escaped him, his magic reacting instinctively, a chilling warmth shocking him as his reserves broke, exploding through his veins with a deep understanding, goose-pimples tracing his skin, the lingering electricty of the spell breaking into his eyes, his ears as the world colored itself brighter and more defined by his will. He immediately caught the flickering of two somethings both covered with fur, he could feel them rushing without touching, the bounding thunder of neon yellow excitement lighting against the green ghost auras of the sea around them.

One of the somethings broke through the softness of new grass, an explosion of tan fur and colored aura, bouncing and round with a strange intelligence. He watched, dumbfounded, happiness and excitement brightening the aura like the sun, oddly molten. "Or mutable?" Thomas thought, curiously pushings against the aura with a delicate curiosity. He held one hand to Stranger, the golem ever silent as it watched. He could make Stranger scream, and loudly, but he wondered if it would be enough to scare off the dog or wolf or whatever it was.

"You've got a big aura, for a dog, anyway," he said, realizing it's aura was almost as big, if not roughly the same size, as a human's. He caught the black dog sticking it's head through the grass, a wild sense of playfullness, pink and yellow and dancing along the edges of it's aura. The tan wolf-dog seemed to be more excited -- and more importantly, non-threatening. "Maybe you belong to someone out here," he paused, wondering who would be walking their pets outside the safety of the city.

At the young man's shout --or loud breath?-- the coyote backed off. He flattened his ears back and tucked his tail, making himself look smaller. Less threatening. Sister's yip had been one of alert; this sound might have been that, or a warning, but it might have also been distress. The coyote saw that the human's hand had touched some... thing... that he himself did not know. But somehow it seemed like it might be used to do something; humans had a lot of things, and they were all used differently. He didn't know what that one was, what it was for. He also didn't want to frighten the person. No. He wanted to be near to him. To be friends.

Though now looking closer... well, the young man didn't look scared, did he? The coyote crept slightly nearer again, tail wagging slightly as he placed his paws carefully, though his ears were still tucked back to his skull. His heart was beating hard in his chest. He was still happy, very happy to see the young man. Just a little more cautious now.

But it seemed all was good. The human-form spoke to him. Speaking was almost always good, especially when it wasn't in an angry or harsh tone. One of the words used was strange, though. The coyote didn't know what an aura was. As for being big... he was smaller than both of his dogs by far. Still. It didn't matter. He was just happy they were both here.

And that happiness grew even larger at the human's next words: "Maybe you belong to someone out here." The coyote wiggled in his excitement, and it was such that he could contain himself no longer. In a flicker-flash like light glinting off the surface of a lake, he took human shape, though he still crouched near the ground. Behind him, Brother let out a woof at the transformation and snuck closer, pressing his nose to Kyo's bare back. Sister growled again, not far off but not seen, either. Kyo ignored her, in favor of watching the person in front of him.

"Be-long," he said, trying it out, knowing the meaning as he did with most words but not having spoken them himself. "Kyo be-long, yes. Kyo friend." He put a hand to his chest, then held it out to point at the person. Friends. Not a threat. Human-forms liked to be told out loud that the coyote-man was or wasn't a danger, whereas most animals just knew. Then again, human-forms needed many more sounds too, to be understood. Something that Kyo struggled with. He struggled now.

He wanted to ask this new person what he knew about Kyo belonging to someone. That was true, and it made Kyo terribly, almost painfully excited, almost frightened with excitement, that this person might know something about his boy. His boy had been lost for so long. But this person had said belong so maybe he knew. Maybe he knew.

Kyo hooked his arm around Brother's neck, who had wiggled to his side and was sniffing in the stranger's direction, and tried to find the words. It was very hard. "You friend, you help Kyo? Kyo be-long, don't like..." Kyo didn't like being alone. Being apart. But he didn't know how to say that. He ruffled a hand through his hair. "Don't like bad stay, bad... place." He put a hand to his chest again, as if to show that the bad was inside him, the bad was how he felt when he couldn't find the person he kept looking for. But he knew it wasn't good enough. Frustrated, he looked up at the young man, touching his fingers to his lips. "Bad. No good. Try." He shook his head. "Make no good." Hopefully this person would understand this part at least. He didn't have good sounds, words, not like most of the people in the city. But then, Kyo was not a person, he was a coyote. It was a difficult thing to relearn all the words that he hadn't needed when he was off in the wilds.

OOCSo yeah, like I said... language skills and vocab. ^_^'

Thomas wondered at the aura, there was a complex sentience about it; it held the animal's shape well enough, it wasn't a simple orb that covered most animals or non-magical objects. He wasn't entirely sure why he saw the more complex aura's as an echo of their physical selves. Maybe because they could claim an identity? Or maybe it was an echo of how they saw themselves, he considered, watching as gold cream bubbles exploded over the aura, an intense feeling of buzzed happiness tinged with the incredible deep reds of a burning excitement and --

"You're a kelvic?" Thomas asked, surprised at his own shock. "Obviously, I should've guessed..." his voice trailed off, his head cocked to the side in curiosity. He wasn't embarrased by the Kelvic's nakedness, Sahova hadn't cared to dress him after all, and he'd grow use to working nude in the case his clothes had needed to be washed. "You don't seem to have the greatest grasp of language, either," he frowned, not really talking to Kyo, his tone studious, less interered in Kyo the being, and more in Kyo as a new thing. He caught the acidic trail of frustration as the kelvic struggled to speak, to communicate, a brush of rough sand, a sudden feeling of being slowed down, like trying to walk through water. "Curious thing, you."

He immediately regretted not taking the time to study any of the kelvic population of Sahova. He knew they were there, some had even been used as animation sources. Cid had mentioned something about them taking direction better than animals, and with less willing to fight than the other races. Something about them being naturally subservient. Thomas had found the thought interesting, and nothing more. Now, he even wondered if that was true.

Kyo seemed too wild to obey, a stunning sun of an aura blinding with a constant stream of bubbled happiness, not dampered even the slightest by the passing of rough frustration. His aura shaped around him, now echoing human instead of animal. Thomas caught the same sense of mutable-ness, of changing, now the meaning obvious. There was a sense of dirt and earth and warm fur and more things Thomas couldn't identify, not yet, but there was a raw sense of natural about Kyo. Or, at least he knew that the kelvic spent enough time outside for it to stick to his aura.

"Do you belong to someone? Where are they? Why can't you speak?" Thomas asked question after question, watching his aura for any change, anything that could help establish some basic understanding. "And what bad place? The city? The city is a bad place?" He asked urgently, a wave of paranoia overcoming him. Why was the city bad? Had he just walked into a different kind of Sahova, unknowingly?

Kyo didn't balk at the word Kelvic as he once might have done. For a long long time he had thought Kelvic was bad. That it meant he was bad, meant he was different. He still was uncertain of what Kelvic was. But now, at least, he didn't shy away from the word. Kelvic, he thought, had something to do with the animal-form. Though he was in human-form now, and he had still just been called it. He didn't know. Myrian still confused him too, though he understood Human and Akalak.

Thinking about it, he realized each word associated with a different smell and sight. Akalak were big and blue --though they had other bright colors, too, like weird strong flower men. Humans had a more usual scent, though it was something more difficult for him to think about in words. Kelvics... he didn't know. His dogs were dogs; did that make them Kelvic?

During this, the young man said something about language, and Kyo perked up, nodding his head. Yes, he knew what Kyo had been trying to say. "No language," he agreed, tasting the shape of the word and forming it carefully, "No good."

Questions came, and the coyote-man felt like he wanted to answer very badly, so much it was like a need. But it was so difficult. Human words. Humans needed so so many. Kyo didn't have nearly enough. He tried as best he could.

"Yes belong," he said, following more closely to how the human-form had said that last word, no longer drawing it out. "Belong... belong good. Good live. No belong bad. Bad." He remembered how sad and awful-lonely it was to be away and alone. Away from his boy was terrible. Away from all people was worse. He remembered being sick. In the head like there was no sun in the sky and in his body like he couldn't eat or even walk or run. He felt a whisper of that sadness now, a howling deep inside. An emptiness. Without thinking about it, he scooted closer to this new person, this new friend, and maybe felt better. He blew out a breath.

As for where his boy was, and how he couldn't speak... he didn't know. Uncertainty crossed him, like not knowing if one was strong enough to continue. He went on as best he could. For the human. "Kyo belong good-friend." That was the best he had for his boy, and not near good enough. He grimaced like he'd tasted something bad. "Good-friend no stay. Other place. Kyo no rest. No sleep, no slow. Try for good-friend." He shook his head, eyes suddenly sad, hugging Brother tighter. The dog licked his shoulder, tail wagging low, eyes on the stranger. "No good. No good. Kyo can't speak..." Another rush of frustration. He frowned. Then shrugged, a helpless movement. "Kyo stay no place. No live city. No live people, no speak." Now it was different. He lived in the blue city called Riverfall with the blue men. But before it had been just him and his Brother and Sister for the longest time out away from everyone else. He remembered some of before that. He remembered his boy, and some bad people. But not much more.

The city question was hard, too. Because the city had been bad. Before. Bad enough that Kyo and his dogs had gone out and left and waited. But the badness was gone, now. The bad moods and feelings. It was better. "No bad place. City... clean. Good. Welcome. No worry, friend."

Saying friend reminded him that he didn't know this person's call. His name. He wouldn't need it, would know the human's scent from now on and would remember. But human-forms liked names. And it was easier to say a name than it was to say what a person smelled like. Searching now, Kyo pointed to himself, said, "Kyo," then pointed to the young man, saying in a voice that held a question, "Friend...?"

Thomas was thrilled; here was a creature, with the full emotional range of a human, and yet none of that disgusting control that buffered his magic. Kyo let it all completely loose, his emotions unchained and felt immensely. His aura a show of strange tastes and sounds, a smorgasbord of colors and textures, all for Thomas to see, to understand, to digest.

He listened carefully as the kelvic struggled to come up with words, his aura mirroring his frustration, shaking in yellows, cutting at the prim bubbles of joy. He caught the bitter sweetness of lemon cake nostalgia as Kyo mentioned his 'good-friend', although Thomas wasn't entirely clear on why he hadn't stayed with him. Had 'good-friend' died? There were ripples sprouting from his forehead, falling through to the very edges of his aura; this, too, was something Thomas had seen often enough in others. He knew it wasn't something emotional, as even the most controled showed this easily. Something with the mind, he was sure, but what would show up so readily in the aura?

"I'm Thomas," Thomas answered slowly, offering a hand hesitantly. Would Kyo understand to shake? How long had he lived without human contact, he wondered. "And it's hard to understand what you're saying, Kyo. Do you speak another language? Is that why common is so difficult for you?" He asked, watching the ever changing aura for any hint of understanding. "Is it hard for you to understand me?" He asked, semi--concerned this conversation would be very short lived if neither could understand the other.

"You don't know where 'good-friend' is? Do you know their name? Are they in the city?," Thomas asked again, "What did you mean by 'try for good friend', Kyo? Are yo looking for them? Or are you looking for another 'good friend'?" The animator wondered if the kelvic was looking for some kind of family -- maybe good friend had been a surname of some kind. He was curious to find out where the Kelvic called home, he had mentioned that 'Kyo stay no place' but surely his human side would want a home?

"Where is the last place Kyo called home?"

This was getting more and more difficult, and Kyo looked at the young man with a frown, his eyebrows pulled down. He wanted to speak to this person openly-- this Thomas, as he called himself, something that would have made Kyo's tail wag had he been in coyote-form. As it was, he flashed a smile when he learned the name, before returning to try to puzzle out what to do. What to do?

It was just so hard to speak. Not for the first time, the coyote wished that everyone would be in animal-form all the time. Things would be so much simpler. There would not be all the cities to hold people in or out, or all the things, all the stuff they had and bought that they wanted or didn't want. There wouldn't be so much complication, not at all. And there wouldn't be this spoken language. Speaking with the body was so much easier. Kyo and his dogs didn't talk with their mouths to each other, at least not in words, only yips and barks and howls and whines. But they still knew each other, and got along well. They could still argue or laugh. Yes, things would be so much easier if people would just take animal-form.

But that wasn't right either. Because Kyo loved the human-forms. He loved how they were and loved to be near them, even if they were different and sometimes confusing.

Now he sat where he was and put a hand to his face, thinking. Thinking. Thinking. And then he remembered something. Some place.

There had been an area, out of the city, not too far away. A strange place. Kyo and his dogs had gotten close to it while they were hiding from the badness of the city, though they had never gone into the trees. There had been some bad feelings at this place, that he didn't understand. Getting close to it had made him feel strange. Nervous. Jumpy. But there had been another feeling, too. In his head. When he tried to remember what it was like, all he saw were memories: a flower opening to the sun, or a baby bird picking through its shell so that it might be born and live. That was all.

And yet, somehow he thought that might help him now.

He would answer Thomas' questions. But first... he would take him to this place, if he could. If the human-form would go. Kyo took to his feet, standing just a little taller than Thomas, and grasped his outstretched hand as he did, taking it in both of his though he didn't shake. He'd seen some of the blue men do something like this before. He wanted to hold on, but he made himself let go, since that was what they had done. Then he said, "Thomas. Stay." He felt odd telling a human what to do, so the last word came out more like a question.

If Thomas agreed to wait, if he understood what Kyo was trying to tell him to do, then Kyo would shift back to coyote and dash off, towards the city. He would return in just a little while, human-form once more and still shirtless, but wearing patchy, well-worn and -ripped shorts, loose and a little overlarge. His dogs would be bounding along with him as he left and returned.

Thomas watched, with some amusement, as Kyo caught his hand with his two, his aura sparkling with warmth, and radiance catching from their grasp, hot white gold swirls dispelling from their touch into Kyo's aura. He wondered at this, understanding the color as something related to want, or desire, but the kelvic's aura held no lust, or jealousy. He considered the colors, their heat. It was like the contact was something Kyo needed, which was an interesting hypothesis.

Why would anyone need physical contact?

He felt the sticky thickness of hesitation, his aura clinging to Thomas' with bright green mush; he hadn't wanted to let go. He nodded at the kelvic's request, confused, not entirely sure how he felt about being commanded by a wolf-dog-thing.

He closed his eyes as he ceased the spell, opening to a world dulled and boring. He wondered if there was a more permanent way to maintain his castings. Without, of course, risking overgiving. He stayed like that for a while, simply enjoying the newness of the world, of spring, of life. He stirred when he heard something approaching, suprised to see Kyo arrive in something that Thomas only very generously described as clothes.

"Kyo, are those the only clothes you have?"

"Kyo, are those the only clothes you have?"

He had only just returned, but already another question. Kyo didn't mind. He liked it. He liked Thomas to talk to him, and talking back. It made him feel warm. Now the coyote-man looked down his front, fingers picking at the loose material of the pants. He had some more clothes, things he had picked up or found throughout his running. These ones for the legs. Another for the arms and head, a shirt. Some other ones that he didn't really pay attention to, like the ones that went on the feet. These ones he was wearing were the only things he had now, outside of the walls of the blue city in this area. So he smiled and bobbed his head, saying, "Yes, only clothes." At least that was an easy answer to give.

Now the coyote-man paused for a second, looking around, scenting the air. Which way had that place been? His eyes scanned the surrounding land, then stopped. Ah. There. He made a motion at Thomas with one hand, curling his fingers into a fist, and said, "Ah, Thomas. Come?" The young man seemed willing, so Kyo led the way.

He went as fast or slow as necessary, making sure they stayed together. At least the ground was flat and good out here, not too many things to trip the feet. Sister ranged far ahead, keeping her distance from the human-form, her light fur blending into the grasses til she disappeared. Brother was more bold. He bounced right next to Kyo's side, close enough that Kyo could reach and put a hand to his back. Though sometimes the big dog circled back and around to catch Thomas' scent again, brushing past him as if it was a game, tail whipping the air.

Eventually, they came to the place, and probably even Thomas who had not been there before would know that something was different, that they were getting close. Not too far ahead there was a strange sight: a curve of suddenly taller and greener grass, new plants already growing tall and lush. An oasis in the plains. Kyo slowed as they drew near, until he seemed to reach a boundary he was reluctant to cross. He stopped and turned towards Thomas, and did the gesture with his hand again. "Come." He already felt nervous, like lightning might suddenly strike down from the sky and set him alight. He took a deep breath.

And then he sprinted forward as fast as his two human legs would take him.

There was a rush of bad feelings. That egg-shell one where he felt his mind crack open. That bugs-crawling one where his skin wanted to leap from his body and all the little hairs stood on edge. The one where he had more than just his mind, a whole lot of them all coming together. The one where his belly twitched like he'd eaten something bad and had to get rid of it. The way his heart thundered like the ground under the hooves of a galloping horse. How it felt like he was standing on the edge of something big, a cliff, and he was about to tumble over and fall off. Despite all of it, Kyo kept running, teeth clamped together.

And then, as he broke across the line of green plants, it was over, all gone, and he nearly stumbled and fell on his face in relief at the feeling of peace. The coyote-man was panting like he'd been running for days and days and days. He bent over with his hands on his knees, puffing, and then abruptly straightened, eyes wide. Still breathing hard, he looked around.

If the other young man had made it through, there would be a feeling of unhampered connection. Kyo could suddenly feel... he didn't know what he could feel. But it felt like everything. Where his feet touched the grass he felt the usual tickle... but he also felt the grass crumple and fold beneath him, patient for him to move so that it might spring back up. He could smell the nearby flowers blooming, and could feel the buzz of a fuzzy bee as it flitted from one to the next. He was aware of a small herd of goats nearby hiding amongst the trunks of trees, and he knew that they knew of him and were wary. Somewhere nearby he sensed water and the bright fish that swam within it. But somehow none of this was confusing, and none of it was too much. He understood it all without it being a bother.

The coyote-man turned in a circle, his body feeling like it was full up to the brim with energy. He crowed out some laughter, both hands pressed to his hair, and never had he felt so good. At least not for a long, long time. Kyo spun to see Thomas; if he had followed, the coyote-man would beam a smile at him, and with the smile would come a feeling so deep and wide and warm that it might be the color of the rising sky.

"Yes, belong," Kyo said aloud, but now the meaning came across clear, though his words had not improved and his mind did not think that way. Instead, images and feelings flowed; a blurred memory of a young dark-haired boy with bright color-changing eyes and a great smile. His boy. Feelings of possession and protection and binding came with the image, as did lesser ones like pride and happiness. And those were just the remembered ones, associated with the simple smiling memory.

How Kyo now felt was earnest. He wanted Thomas to understand. To see. He couldn't remember all the questions that had been asked, but he knew that Thomas had asked if he had belonged to someone, and he did. His boy. He belonged to him, even if they had been lost from each other for such an aching, long long time.
