Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

There was a certain joy to be found in being quiet. At least, there was for Shahar; silence was where he was at his best. He was more alert, more observant and more careful. And more importantly, silence was where he moved at his most skilled. Silence was a joining of all things, and it was being open to all things. The world was ever-moving, if he was only silent enough to listen to it.

It was for this reason that Shahar took special care in his movements as he wound his way through the grasses outside of Riverfall, just in sighting distance of the vineyards. Predators were wary of being so close to the city, and they did not often come so close, which in turn meant that the prey-creatures lingered in abundance. It was the small creatures that held Shahar’s interest today; he had no need for pelts or money, only something to feed the camp when the sun began to descend.

It was for this reason he had chosen a boar’s trail to follow; while its hide was often marred and undesirable, its meat was lean and filling. And it seemed to have a taste for Riverfall grapevines, so Shahar was sure no one would mind if he slew it.

He took his care walking, although it hindered his movement speed; each step began on the outside of the foot and rolled in, which greatly reduced his noise as he walked. It felt a bit unnatural and was more taxing than normal walking, but it left his ears open to the rest of the world. The birds paid him less mind, the occasional rabbit was far slower to flee, and when he passed a coyote it regarded him with a curious gaze, but didn’t even get up from its seat. His stealth did not make him go unnoticed, but it did reduce his impact. He walked with the sound of an animal, and so therefore he was treated as one.

The boar had taken a wide path, angling unhurriedly for the vineyard but swerving and pausing whenever it found something to eat along the way. It didn’t know it was being hunted, and so it felt no need to go quickly; even at his reduced pace, Shahar would catch up with ease. Another fifteen or so minutes of walking, and then he would begin to sneak in earnest.

A certain joy could be felt at finally hunting again. Athaera had spent her time in Riverfall dining at taverns and the like, so it'd been a while since she'd actually killed her own food. As a result, she was slightly rusty, and probably wouldn't catch anything. But that wouldn't stop the vantha from trying. After all, how else would she be able to get back into it?

The girl glanced around, making sure she was quiet. She was used to hunting in forests, but there weren't many trees in the area. The girl had no idea how to track down animals in grass, but she still made an effort to be silent. Although, she stayed near the general area of the city, around the plantations of something-or-other.

Athaera had her quiver slung across her back, equipped with a bow and arrows. She pulled out her bow, pulling back the string, although there wasn't an arrow in it. She targeted a point in the city wall, before letting go. She was pretty sure her aim was a bit off, but once again, she was out of practice.

OOCSorry for the long wait, and that it's so short. :l

The boar’s confidence was high, it seemed, as it had angled closer to the city, where the thicker grapevines grew in the shadow of the great wall. Shahar followed it cautiously; he was getting close enough that actually sneaking was a pressing option. Falling into a half-crouch, Shahar’s field of awareness widened to encompass both the trail he was following and the environment around him; even the noise of a disturbed bird was certain to be noticed by the boar.

Heel first. Roll along the outside ridge to the toe. Fold inwards to full sole. Each step was careful and conscious. He avoided the dry, brown grass that would snap, instead keeping to dirt and rotten growth that would give silently under the weight of his foot. He was very close, and if he strained his ears… yes, there; he could hear the rustling of movement. It was far closer to the city than the trail before him suggested; perhaps the boar had found a particularly interesting scent and had circled towards the wall? It wasn’t stunningly out of character; the cooler shadow of the city would give way to more water, and therefore more foliage. It was entirely likely that the plants there were worth the boar’s attention.

Angling towards the sound, Shahar was careful to remain aware of his own noise. He didn’t want to give away his position prematurely; the first thing he needed to do was see the animal he was pursuing.

Which left him quite irritated when it turned out not to be an animal at all.

The person was somewhat short and slim-framed, leading Shahar to the assumption that it was female. Her hair was short, and although it was black, it also seemed bizarrely colorful without any color at all. She was weighed down by a bow and quiver, and there was a happy spring to her step––a hunter, then?

As he watched, the woman paused and raised her bow. She put no arrow to the string, but still moved as if she had, aiming at the wall and letting the weapon spring back to its original shape. Shahar tilted his head curiously. He had seen Khida do something similar when she had brought home her shortbow, although she did not shoot without an arrow so much as simply flexing and unflexing the bow. Was this something archers did frequently? Shahar did not know; at the moment, he was content with his javelins.

With this new information, Shahar ran through the time it had taken him to venture this for, and how long it would take for him to venture back; he didn’t want to lose the boar if he could help it, but he couldn’t afford to act hastily. Haste made noise, and noise was traitorous.

The Trade Of Hunters (Aethera)

The coyote was resting. He'd spent the cool early morning chasing down first rabbits, then mice. His bad back leg --mangled by his Sister's sharp angry teeth-- was still weak, though it was not as hurt as it had been before. The skin had healed up into a hard scab like a bug's shell, and there was no more blood. That was good.

Though he had chased and hunted all morning he hadn't caught more than a snack: a rabbit, and no mice at all. He'd chanced on the rabbit while it was grazing, and somewhere far off --but not too far-- he could still hear Brother chewing on its small bones. Sister had long since disappeared into the grasses, though he didn't know where. She had probably taken herself away, far away from the big city wall.

After trying to get the mice and not catching any he'd laid down for his rest. It was as he was licking at his leg to clean it, laying on a soft bed of grass, that there came the lightest rustle-- like a breeze had stirred some leaves. A moment later a human stepped into sight. The coyote paused what he was doing, surprised, and watched as the human stalked by with smooth, rolling steps. It was only after he had gone by that the coyote's surprise faded and he wagged his tail, hopping up onto his three good feet to follow.

Sniffing after the human brought another surprise. This human... the coyote knew him somehow. He had smelled him before at some place, and not too long ago. He thought it must have been in the city, though the man smelled like the wild and the sky, barely leaving a trail to pick up. The coyote pointed his nose lower, and as he walked he placed his paws careful like the human had, sure to be quiet... for he had knew what the man was doing. Hunting. That was easy to know, since the hunter's path also crossed the pungent smell of one of those big hairy pig things-- those boars as they were called.

The coyote, interested in the hunt --he had never gone after boar before-- as well as the hunter, kept his distance as he limp-jogged behind. He fell to flanking the big wild pig's trail-scent, letting the hunter go direct-behind, while he looped over towards one side.

For a while it was quiet, and the coyote had to be careful to smell for the hunter's position as it was difficult to hear him as he sneaked through the grass. But eventually the boar-smell grew stronger, and eventually they came near to the prey. The canine's mouth lolled open in a grin and his ears perked forward when he heard a rustling in the bush; the hunter must have heard it too, or saw something, because he stilled, not approaching any closer to the noise. Still scenting the air, the coyote ghosted even further to the side, taking the boar from direct-opposite the hunter...

...until he realized they had not found a boar at all, but a human girl. One whiff of her scent and the coyote's heart started pounding.

She was an ice-human. She was one of those like his boy, the ones that lived in the cold-place so very lost and far away. She smelled like home.

Unthinking, the canine out a yip-whine at the home-scent, and wagged his tail so hard that his leg nearly buckled beneath him. Then he remembered the hunt, the need for quiet, and he stopped himself dead-still, listening.

Somewhere not-too-far but not-too-close he heard something: a snuffling snort from the boar. He couldn't tell if it had heard him.

OOCJust in case anyone's wondering, Kyo met Khida two days before, and he smelled Shahar on her then.

Athaera whipped around, thinking she heard a sound that must have been caused by an animal. Her eyes were a bright blue, her heart pulsing with the thrill of hunting again. Then, a wave of disappointment coursed through her as the vantha realized it wasn't an animal. A man stood a ways from Athaera, with long brown hair. He seemed a bit taller than the girl, and she wondered how long he'd been there.

Another creature entered the girl's field of vision. Athaera recognized the reds, tans, and browns to be the coloring of a coyote. She realized the sound she'd heard came from the coyote, a sort of yelp-whine. Athaera wasn't entirely sure how threatening coyotes were, but she vaguely knew that they could attack. The girl worked solely on reflex, quickly setting an arrow into her bow, pulling back, and letting go.

To her disappointment, and to the coyote's fortune, the arrow instead passed the creature, lading harmlessly in the grass. "Shyke," the girl muttered to herself. Yup, she was definitely out of practice. Athaera quickly grabbed another arrow, hoping the coyote wouldn't decide to attack. She set it in her bow, preparing to pull back and let go at any moment.

By now, the man must have been aware of the creature, and could defend himself if need be.

OOCI didn't manage to make Athaera shooting at Kyo seem fast-paced, although it pretty much just happened in a matter of a second or two. Also, Kyo, sorry for shooting at you.
