Taking a stop by the Alements, Ashar tries to avoid becoming what he hates

Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

The Alements

Ashar never thought that this would happen to him. He (or Jek, rather) had read so many stories about the washed up warrior, that stereotypical fighter who got so angry or dejected or pessimistic that he did nothing but drink the days away. Each time, each story, Ashar swore to never become such a sad and pathetic soul so as to actually feel the need to waste the days. He determined himself to always be doing something interesting and fulfilling, to find a way to serve himself and his city, to drive onward and upward. So great was his loathing for these fictional layabouts who spent their lives at bars and taverns and contributed absolutely nothing to their race or even their city, so powerful was his disgust at their mention in any story, that he vowed even at a young age that he would never be anything like them.

Which was why Ashar began hating himself the moment he began walking along the docks looking for a tavern to drink away his time.

What would Jek say? Ashar asked himself angrily as he stomped along the docks, catching the occasional stare as he brought along his own little personal cloud of dourness. Sadness welled up inside of Ashar as he realized that this was the first time he ever had to ask that question rhetorically.

Usually Jek would be incapable of remaining quiet and not giving his two Mizas on every thought that jumped into Ashar's head. For a long time Ashar thought of it as annoying in the extreme, but now that his thoughts were met only with silence he felt a crushing loneliness whenever he wanted a companion. So many emotions that Ashar never had to deal with before were now popping up in his mind, and without Jek to talk it out with he was left completely unsure of how to approach anything. It was almost as if Jek's absence left Ashar to pick up all the emotional baggage that he usually carried. This obviously could not be the case, but it did not change the fact that Ashar was missing his dark brother greatly.

With Jek's silence, Ashar's own thoughts spiraled into a whirlwind without anyone else to bounce off of. Many feelings and ideas of anger and injustice and sorrow and shame surfaced in his mind, left to fester by his unwillingness to address them with anyone else. Ashar was so totally unused to these things that he was beginning to buckle under the weight of them all. He desperately needed someone to talk to, someone to think with... but instead he went looking for a drink.

In two steps, the surly Kavran came to a stop. He had lost himself in his thoughts and completely lost track of where he was going. Had he passed the Kulk already? Was he even going to the Kulk? He didn't care, the nearest place would do.

That's when Ashar turned to face the cove of the third tier of Riverfall and came face to face with a sight he had not seen for a while. Before him sat squat against the docks and piers was the Alements, with its front patio lit by stylized lanterns and cushy seats. Much detail had gone into its design, that was for certain. The last time Ashar had been here was almost a year ago, when some fool broke into it and tried to steal something. Never had Ashar been a patron, but there was that faint flicker of recognition behind his eyes.

Although he was far more familiar with the Kulk, the Alements was right in front of him and both served liquor. Wading into the entrance of the tavern, Ashar pulled up alongside the bar and propped his elbows on it, slouching over the counter slightly.

There he sat, waiting to be served. How truly pathetic he had become.

Evalin sighed as she worked, the blade of the scalpel in had as she cut deep into the flesh of the corpse that lay on the table in the back of the Alements. The man was some poor sap who had tried to learn more than he should about Caelum's work in the shadows, and he had no way of knowing just what was hunting from those very same depths. He was a man with no name, a sailor of some sort upon a larger trading ship that docked in Riverfall this season. Who did he work for though? Well, that was for Evlain to figure out.

She began pushing her fingers underneath the fold of skin that covered his abdomen, her arm sinking up to her elbow as she loosened skin from muscle and fat, pealing it back and cutting at the flesh with the razor edge until it fell over the side of the bed like a flap. This she then repeated on the other side, tutting to herself at the excess of fat that still clung in an uneven layer over the muscle and the ragged edges of the cuts. Setting the blade aside Evalin began to feel along the man's ribcage, looking for where the tip of the sternum was located, and once found she rested her scalpel against it, sliding it down about an inch before singing it into the flesh there. The meat parted easily, the many fibers of the muscle splitting cleanly and as she went Evalin hooked her finger underneath the tissue, pulling and raising it as she went to prevent herself from accidentally cutting into the soft organs beneath. It was slow, patient work, and as she reached the pelvis Evalin angled the cut to trace along the hip, severing the muscles along the edges so that, as before, she could fold this flesh back on either side to open up the abdomen beneath.

The red of fresh blood was already filling the crevices from the cuts, reminding Evalin why it was best to let a body sit and age a time before beginning such a procedure. It did not bother the Immortal much, but she did not wish to clean up the mess were it to spill over onto the floor. So she took from beneath the bed several large dirty cloths, rolling and pushing them into the crease caused by the open flaps of the skin and dabbing at the exposed areas until they were clear enough to identify different parts and areas once more. With both sides now flipped out like double doors Evalin had a clear view of the fatty apron that covered the internal organs, and grabbing a handful of the bloodied yellow tissue began to cut at the edges as she had before, pulling as she went to half tear, half remove the fat and flop it in one full piece in a metal dish on a table beside her.

The next part would take some time. Sorting the organs, finding what was useful to Caelum, and searching his stomach and intestines for anything he may have swallowed that would give a clue to who he belonged to. For now, however, there was something else that needed tending. On a table several beds down lay another body, finished and cleaned that would need to be given to whomever would make it ready for its final rest in the ground. Form time to time those brought to Caelum did not make it, and when they passed it took a little time to determine the reason for their death and their families notified. This man had died just the previous day and now needed to be moved. Evalin would need help moving him into one of the bags prepared just for bodies such as this so that it could be carried to its next destination tomorrow to be given back to the family. For that Evalin required Caelums help, for she could not lift the large man on her own.

Wiping her blood covered hands on her stained apron Evalin made toward the entrance to the main tavern. She wore a very dirty and well used and faded white robe, sleeves rolled up and blood spattering the front, apron and up her arms all the way to her elbows. There was even a little on her cheek with the nuit did not seem to notice. Her black hair was tide back in a loose pony tail, and her black nails were long and sharp looking, not unlike the scalpel she just finished using.

At this time of night Evalin did not expect there to be anyone in the place, as the Alements closed rather early for a place that prided itself on its concoctions. So when she came around the corner and saw the Akalak sitting there she was slightly surprised, but not so much so as to make a comment on this fact. Instead she looked around, a frown touching her lips as she rested her bloodied hands on her hips and sighed, "Really now, never is he here when I require him. What a lazy owner he is...".

Wretched Aura: As a Wretched One Evalin possesses an unnatural aura about her that causes unease in those who get too close. It can come as a prickle of the hair on the back of the neck, a sense of 'wrongness' about her. How people experience it is different depending on their personality and how they handle the unnatural and unknown. Animals tend to become more agitated, more easily sensing how wrong Evalin is and often avoiding contact with her.

A Spark (Evalin)

Postby Ashar on May 1st, 2015, 4:05 pm

For how long had Ashar been here? Too long for his liking, yet he remained at the bar with his empty glass all the same. Throughout the hustle and bustle of the day and into the early hours of the evening, with people coming and going and his glass being filled irregularly but frequently, Ashar's entire day had been wasting away on some stool in some tavern out on the docks of a grand city. If he had any presence of mind left, or any sliver of his former pride, he would be shaming himself for having spent his day doing such. As it was, his thoughts barely had any coherence as he slouched over the bar and looked into his empty glass. It had not even sunk in that he was the only remaining patron, nor had it occurred to him that it had been some time since the server had come around to ask if he wanted another. All that Ashar's world consisted of in that moment were his own empty thoughts.

He was pulled out of them quite abruptly, however, at the appearance of a pale woman decorated with streaks and spots of blood.

"Shyke..." Ashar exclaimed in his native tongue as she came out into the lounge of the Alements as if all were normal, commenting to herself and completely disregarding how anyone around might regard her current state.

The Akalak looked around to see if anyone else was as surprised by the entrance of such a person, only to be surprised again by the fact that the establishment was now empty save for him and this woman. Apparently, even the owner himself was absent, according to her earlier comment. How was it that Ashar found himself to be one of the only two remaining in such a place? Perhaps more importantly, how had he found himself the only one remaining at a tavern with a woman wearing a bloody apron?

Then Ashar remembered that he was supposed to be a Kavran and should probably be a little more suspiciously curious of this woman's appearance. Although there were perfectly many possibilities as to why she was bloodied that were perfectly normal and without wrongdoing, there was something incredibly off-putting about the woman that Ashar could not quite put his finger on, at least not at first. Her face was pale and eyes slightly bugging out of her skull, but aside from that (and her bloody apron) she appeared as any other human woman. It did occur to him that he was slightly drunk from the evening, but he wasn't so inebriated so as to be hallucinating such a gruesome yet detailed circumstance.

Despite Ashar's misgivings about the situation, he did not wish to jump to conclusions, and as such he wanted a greater grasp of the situation at hand. Slowly sliding out of his stool, the tall Akalak rose up and turned to face the woman, dressed only in his plain clothes and without any arms or armor.

"May I help you?" the Kavran asked politely.
